Role of perceived family support in psychological distress for pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic

Anxiety, depression symptoms, and psychological resilience among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in isolation: A study from Wuhan, China

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the status of anxiety, depression, and psychological resilience among individuals with COVID-19, and their interrelationships to provide a scientific basis for developing psychological intervention strategies for these patients.

METHODS

A total of 126 patients with COVID-19 who were admitted to Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital were recruited in this study. A comprehensive survey was conducted using a general information questionnaire, the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, the self-rating depression scale, and the Chinese version of the psychological Connor-Davidson resilience scale; a questionnaire-based survey was conducted.

RESULTS

Significant differences in anxiety scores were observed among COVID-19 patients with different education levels and the number of immediate family members. The differences in depression scores were noted among patients of different age groups, and marital statuses were also significant. The total psychological resilience score and the scores of all dimensions are negatively correlated with anxiety and depression. Furthermore, the patient's gender, the number of immediate family members, and the psychological resilience dimensions are associated with the severity anxiety of patients. Patient age and psychological resilience are associated with the depression level of patients.

CONCLUSION

Patients with COVID-19 exhibit elevated levels of both anxiety and depression. Notably, psychological resilience emerges as a protective factor against the development of anxiety and depression.

Prevalence and associated factors of insomnia symptoms among pregnant women in the third trimester in a moderately developing region of China

BACKGROUND

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in the general population, especially among pregnant women, and it is considered a major public health issue. Not only can it cause mental and physical problems in pregnant women, but it may also affect the growth of the fetus. However, there are few reports on the prevalence and influencing factors of insomnia symptoms in third-trimester women in China. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of insomnia symptoms among pregnant women in the third trimester in a moderately developing region of China and to further explore the associated factors of insomnia symptoms from various aspects.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was conducted among eligible pregnant women in the third trimester from December 2022 to February 2023. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, and behavioral and psychological characteristics of pregnant women were collected through a structured questionnaire. The Chi-square test and multivariate logistics regression were applied to explore the associated factors of insomnia symptoms.

RESULTS

A total of 535 pregnant women in the third trimester were included in this study, and the prevalence of insomnia symptoms was 59.8%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that pregnant women who lived together with elders (OR: 0.58, 95% CI: 0.40-0.86), had low perceived stress (OR: 0.58, 95% CI: 0.35-0.97), had no threatened abortion (OR: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.32-0.93) and had good doctor-patient communication (OR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.45-0.98) were more likely to stay away from insomnia symptoms. However, pregnant women with anxiety symptoms (OR: 2.27, 95% CI: 1.28-4.03), fear of childbirth (OR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.11-2.40) and a high experience of COVID-19 fear (OR: 1.61, 95% CI: 1.03-2.54) tended to have insomnia symptoms.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of insomnia symptoms in pregnant women is high in Lianyungang city in eastern China in the third trimester. Insomnia symptoms is influenced by multiple factors. There is an urgent need to develop interventions to reduce the prevalence of insomnia symptoms in the third trimester and to focus on pregnant women with risk factors for insomnia symptoms.

Association Between Family Support and Coping Strategies of People With Covid-19: A Cross-Sectional Study

Purpose

The study aimed to determine the association between family support and coping strategies of people diagnosed with COVID-19.

Methods

The study was analytical and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 500 participants who were selected by non-probabilistic and snowball sampling and included residents of both sexes who belonged to the city of Lima, with a diagnosis of COVID-19, who lived with relatives, and who accepted to participate in the research. For data collection, the scales "family support" and "Coping and Adaptation Process-Coping Adaptation Processing Scale (CAPS)" were used. The technique used was the survey through the home visit and the questionnaire instrument. To measure the relationship of the study variables, binary logistic regression was chosen, considering coping strategies as the dependent variable and socio-demographic data and family support as independent variables.

Results

Of the 500 participants, 50.4% were women, and 49.6% were men. The results revealed that most participants presented a high capacity for coping strategies and high perceived family support (97.2% and 81%, respectively). In the bivariate analysis, socio-demographic aspects and family support and their dimensions were related to high or low capacity for coping strategies. Significant differences were verified between marital status (p=0.026), having children (p=0.037), family support (p=0.000), and its dimensions with coping strategies. Finally, the multivariate analysis found that people with COVID-19 who perceived high family support were 33.74 times (95% CI: 7266-156,739) more likely to have a high capacity for coping strategies.

Conclusion

Therefore, it is necessary to promote the development of parental and family support skills in the face of the health emergency caused by COVID-19.

Efforts and expectations of pregnant women against the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic: a phenomenological study

BACKGROUND

COVID-19 is a global threat that directly impacts people's mental health and physical well-being. This study explored the efforts and expectations of pregnant women against the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

This study was a qualitative study that used a phenomenological approach. The informants of this study were pregnant women (n = 20). Data analysis used content analysis with software assistance (Nvivo Release 1.5).

RESULTS

The results of this study identified three themes which were: 1) causative factors of pregnant women's anxiety regarding the impact of COVID-19 including lack of knowledge regarding the impact of the COVID-19 virus and perceived susceptibility; 2) Efforts to reduce anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic including a spiritual approach, the role of family and COVID-19 prevention; and 3) Expectation regarding healthcare services during COVID-19 including virtual based Antenatal Care (ANC) Services and Private ANC Services.

CONCLUSION

A spiritual approach, the role of family, and COVID-19 prevention will help pregnant women reduce their anxiety about being infected with the COVID-19 virus. Furthermore, virtual-based ANC Services, and private ANC services, such as home visits and dividing ANC services and general services into two different tracks as a protective mechanism from being infected with the COVID-19 virus, would assist pregnant women feel safer and secure.

Social Connectedness, Physical Distancing, and Anxiety in Complying with Shelter-In-Place Orders and Advisories during the Once-In-A-Century COVID-19 Pandemic in the US: A Study of Social Media and Internet Users

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19), was first identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. As of 20 October 2020, the virus had infected 8,202,552 people, with 220,061 deaths in US, and in countries around the world, over 38 million people have become infected and over one million have died. The virus usually spreads via respiratory droplets from an infected person. At the time of compiling this paper, while countries around the world are still striving to find a "pharmaceutical intervention (PI)", including treatments and vaccines, they are left with only "non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs)", such as physical distancing, wearing masks, and maintaining personal hygiene. In the US, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five US territories issued mandatory stay-at-home orders between March 1 and 31 May 2020 to lower the risk of virus transmission. This study empirically examined how social connectedness and anxiety interact with shelter-in-place compliance and advisories during the pandemic. The study collected information from 494 adults using an online survey during April and July 2020.

Apoyo social percibido por mujeres gestantes de Santa Marta, Colombia: un análisis comparativo

Introducción: El apoyo social percibido durante la gestación es importante para la salud mental perinatal. Sin embargo, poco se conoce sobre estas variables en la población colombiana. Objetivo: Comparar el apoyo social percibido según variables sociodemográficas, ginecobstétricas y afecto positivo en mujeres gestantes de Santa Marta, Colombia. Materiales y métodos: Participaron 40 mujeres entre 19 y 41 años (M=26.48; DE=5.03), que se encontraban en su tercer trimestre de embarazo, beneficiarias de un programa de promoción de la lactancia materna exclusiva. Las participantes diligenciaron una ficha de información sociodemográfica y ginecobstétrica, la Escala Multidimensional de Apoyo Social Percibido (α=0.88) y una subescala de la Escala de Afectos Positivos y Negativos (α=0.82). Se aplicó la prueba U de Mann-Whitney para los análisis estadísticos comparativos y se siguieron los lineamientos éticos en investigación con humanos. Resultados: 67% de las participantes fueron de estrato socioeconómico bajo, 87.5% tenía pareja, 67.5% contaba con estudios superiores, 42.5% tenía trabajo y 47.5% eran madres primerizas. Las mujeres de estrato socioeconómico alto percibieron mayor apoyo social por parte de sus amigos (p=0.01). El apoyo social familiar fue significativamente más alto en las madres primerizas (p=0.01) y en las que reportaron mayor afecto positivo (p=0.03). Por último, el apoyo social por parte de personas significativas fue mayor cuando era el primer embarazo de la mujer (p=0.02). Conclusión: Se encontraron diferencias significativas en algunas dimensiones del apoyo social percibido según el estrato socioeconómico, ser madre primeriza y el afecto positivo. Se recomienda realizar otros estudios con mayor tamaño muestral. Self-monitoring of blood glucose in gestational diabetes mellitus patients during the COVID-19 pandemic in low- and middle-income countries

Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is critical for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) care. However, there are several hurdles to its practice during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in GDM patients in low- and middle-income countries when GDM care recommendations emphasize telemedicine-based care. Based on available knowledge, this letter proposes the following barriers to SMBG in these GDM patients during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic: Poor internet connectivity, affordability of SMBG and digital applications to connect with healthcare providers, government-imposed social mobility restriction, psychological stress, and mental health conditions. Nevertheless, definitive evidence will only be acquired from rigorous research.

Associations among fear of childbirth, resilience and psychological distress in pregnant women: A response surface analysis and moderated mediation model

INTRODUCTION

Prenatal psychological distress is prevalent during pregnancy. This study aimed to estimate the associations among fear of childbirth, resilience and psychological distress.

METHODS

A total of 1,060 Chinese pregnant women were enrolled from Be Resilient to Postpartum Depression (ChiCTR2100048465) and the following instruments were administered to them: Childbirth Attitudes Questionnaire, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Adverse Childhood Experience scale and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. A dominance, a response surface analysis and a moderated mediation analysis were performed.

RESULTS

In terms of psychological distress, resilience and fear of childbirth could explain 41.6% (0.148/0.356) and 33.1% (0.118/0.356), respectively. Pregnant women with high resilience-low fear of childbirth had significantly lower levels of psychological distress than those with low resilience-high fear of childbirth. The indirect effects of fear of childbirth on psychological distress through resilience was significantly (B = 0.054, 95% CI 0.038 to 0.070). The interactions between fear of childbirth and adverse childhood experiences (β = 0.114, 95% CI -0.002 to 0.231, p = 0.054) and between resilience and adverse childhood experiences (β = -0.118, 95% CI -0.222 to -0.012, p < 0.05) were significant.

CONCLUSION

Resilience, fear of childbirth and adverse childhood experiences may be three important factors to psychological distress in Chinese pregnant women.
