Abstract
This case report presents an exotic envenomation by a Chinese snake, Protobothrops mangshanensis. Its venom exhibited potent activity against plasma and fibrinogen, among other enzymatic activities. The patient initially presented with edema of the right upper limb, without tissue necrosis. There were no signs of bleeding; however, severe hypofibrinogenemia was observed (nadir value at 0.4 g/L), with a marked increase in fibrinogen degradation products and D-dimers, without any other coagulation disturbances. In the absence of a specific antivenom available against Asian Crotalinae venoms, the patient was treated at the 29th hour after bite with six vials of Antivipmyn™ TRI (Instituto Bioclon, Mexico, Mexico), a Mexican antivenom initially intended for American Crotalinae venoms, i.e., Bothrops asper, Lachesis muta and Crotalus durissus. Fibrinogen began to rise 6 hours after the antivenom infusion and was within the normal range 38 hours later. The report also underscores the utility of ClotPro® (Haemonetics ®USA), a viscoelastic test, for real-time monitoring of the snakebite-related coagulopathy. The clotting time was extended to 188 seconds on the EX-test while the MCF was decreased to 31 mm on the EX-test and the AP-test and was not measurable on the FIB-test, confirming severe hypofibrinogenemia. In order to confirm the paraspecificity of antivenom on the venom of P. mangshanensis, we studied the experimental neutralization of the venom procoagulant effect by Antivipmyn TRI and Green Pit Viper antivenom, which has been used in previous published clinical cases of P. mangshanensis envenomation. Both Antivipmyn™ TRI and Green Pit Viper antivenom corrected the procoagulant effect induced by P. mangshanensis venom. These findings suggest that Antivipmyn™ TRI cross-reacts with Protobothrops mangshanensis venom. In the absence of antivenom covering Asian Crotalinae, Antivipmyn TRI should be considered to treat an envenomation by Protobothrops spp.

Abstract
Members of the genus Protobothrops are amongst the more than twenty-eight range-restricted Indian pit viper species. Their bites and envenomings are rarely documented from India. Pit viper envenomings can be challenging to treat in the Indian setting, since available antivenoms do not satisfactorily neutralize their venoms. Herein, we present the first Indian reports on bites and envenoming by Protobothrops jerdonii and Protobothrops himalayanus resulting in local effects, coagulopathy and acute kidney injury in the case of the former and possible mild, isolated coagulopathy in the case of the latter; and discuss management-related challenges in the context of absent specific antivenoms.

Abstract
The Brown-Spotted Pit viper (Protobothrops mucrosquamatus), also known as the Chinese habu, is a widespread and highly venomous snake distributed from Northeastern India to Eastern China. Genomics research can contribute to our understanding of venom components and natural selection in vipers. Here, we collected, sequenced and assembled the genome of a male P. mucrosquamatus individual from China. We generated a highly continuous reference genome, with a length of 1.53 Gb and 41.18% of repeat elements content. Using this genome, we identified 24,799 genes, 97.97% of which could be annotated. We verified the validity of our genome assembly and annotation process by generating a phylogenetic tree based on the nuclear genome single-copy genes of six other reptile species. The results of our research will contribute to future studies on Protobothrops biology and the genetic basis of snake venom.

Abstract
Hematotoxic snake envenomation is clinically important and has serious complications. This case report describes the clinical manifestations of a bite from a newly described species of hematotoxic snake and the outcomes of treatment using locally available antivenom and supportive management. A 39-y-old male was bitten on his right ankle by an unidentified snake. The patient developed coagulopathy, rhabdomyolysis, and clinical signs of compartment syndrome of his right leg within the first day. Eight doses (30 mL, or 3 vials per dose), or a total of 240 mL, of hemato-polyvalent antivenin (Thai Red Cross, Thailand) were given. Aggressive intravenous hydration and alkalinization of urine were performed, and a fasciotomy was performed for the treatment of suspected compartment syndrome. The patient's clinical symptoms and laboratory results indicated progressive improvement during the 5 d of hospitalization. The snake was later identified as Protobothrops kelomohy, a novel snake species with no clinical data available regarding its envenomation of humans. This case shows that P kelomohy envenomation can produce severe effects that occur both locally and systemically. The benefits of the use of polyvalent antivenom in this situation were unclear. However, with supportive treatment in conjunction with serial clinical and laboratory monitoring, the patient recovered, albeit after 7 d of hospitalization.

Abstract
Habitat directly affects the population size and geographical distribution of wildlife species, including the Mangshan pit viper (Protobothrops mangshanensis), a critically endangered snake species endemic to China. We searched for Mangshan pit viper using randomly arranged transects in their area of distribution and assessed their habitat association using plots, with the goals of gaining a better understanding of the habitat features associated with P. mangshanensis detection and determining if the association with these features varies across season. We conducted transect surveys, found 48 individual snakes, and measured 11 habitat variables seasonally in used and random plots in Hunan Mangshan National Nature Reserve over a period of 5 years (2012–2016). The important habitat variables for predicting Mangshan pit viper detection were fallen log density, shrub density, leaf litter cover, herb cover and distance to water. In spring, summer and autumn, Mangshan pit viper detection was always positively associated with fallen log density. In summer, Mangshan pit viper detection was related to such habitats with high canopy cover, high shrub density and high herb cover. In autumn, snakes generally occurred in habitats near water in areas with high fallen log density and tall shrubs height. Our study is the first to demonstrate the relationship between Mangshan pit viper detection and specific habitat components. Mangshan pit viper detection was associated with habitat features such as with a relatively high fallen log density and shrub density, moderately high leaf litter cover, sites near stream, and with lower herb cover. The pattern of the relationship between snakes and habitats was not consistent across the seasons. Identifying the habitat features associated with Mangshan pit viper detection can better inform the forestry department on managing natural reserves to meet the habitat requirements for this critically endangered snake species.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Protobothrops mangshanensis, the Mangshan pit viper, is a rare pit viper native to the area surrounding Mount Mang in China's Hunan province. Toxicity from envenomation is not well characterized. CASE DETAILS A 33-year-old male presented to an emergency department (ED) after being bitten on the forearm by his P. mangshanensis. He complained of mild swelling and pain at the bite site. He was admitted for observation and toxicology consultation. Following initially normal coagulation studies including platelets, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen and D-dimer, fibrinogen decreased to 121 mg/dL and D-dimer concurrently rose to 377 ng/mL over 24 h. On hospital day 2 fibrinogen stabilized at 109 mg/dL and he was discharged with outpatient laboratory monitoring. Three days later, he returned with bruising to the contralateral arm. Fibrinogen was undetectable (<40 mg/dL) and PT was 14.6 s. He declined admission but returned 2 d later with bruising to the nose. Bloodwork revealed immeasurably prolonged PT, aPTT, and thrombin time, but he eloped. Late that evening he returned and was treated with three vials of Green pit viper (Trimeresurus albolabris) antivenom. Within 24 h coagulopathy improved markedly; at five days, coagulation abnormalities resolved. DISCUSSION Mangshan pit viper envenomations may cause isolated hemotoxicity, despite molecular studies suggesting additional neurotoxicity and myotoxicity. T. albolabris antivenom appears effective in treating the resultant coagulopathy. CONCLUSION We report the natural history of envenomation by the Mangshan pit viper. A delayed coagulopathy, apparently fibrinolytic in nature, is unaccompanied by local tissue destruction and responsive to Green pit viper antivenom.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Only one natural venomous snake-the adder viper-lives in the central European region and its bite is usually associated only with mild course of envenoming. Cases of envenoming caused by exotic snakes among their breeders are clinically more important. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological and clinical aspects of registered venomous bites caused by exotic snakes in the Czech Republic over a period of 15 years (1999-2013). MATERIALS AND METHODS This is an observational case series. Data have been collected retrospectively from a database and medical charts of the Toxinology Center belonging to the General University Hospital in Prague. RESULTS In total, 87 cases of exotic snakebites caused by 34 venomous snake species were registered during the study period, coming from 18 genera of Elapinae, Viperinae, and Crotalinae subfamilies. In the cohort, 29 patients (33.3%) developed systemic envenoming and 17 (19.5%) were treated with antivenom. Ten cases of envenoming (11.5%) were considered as potentially life threatening. No patient died due to envenoming caused by exotic snake bites during the study period. Four illustrative cases of envenoming (Echis pyramidum, Dendroaspis polylepis, Protobothrops mangshanensis, and Proatheris superciliaris) are described in detail. CONCLUSION Bites caused by exotic snakes resulted in serious and life-threatening envenomings in some patients. Early transfer to the Center, antivenom administration, and support of failing organ functions contributed to favorable outcome of victims.
