Carbon Nanotube Fiber-Based Flexible Microelectrode for Electrochemical Glucose Sensors

Electrochemical sensors are gaining significant demand for real-time monitoring of health-related parameters such as temperature, heart rate, and blood glucose level. A fiber-like microelectrode composed of copper oxide-modified carbon nanotubes (CuO@CNTFs) has been developed as a flexible and wearable glucose sensor with remarkable catalytic activity. The unidimensional structure of CNT fibers displayed efficient conductivity with enhanced mechanical strength, which makes these fibers far superior as compared to other fibrous-like materials. Copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles were deposited over the surface of CNT fibers by a binder-free facile electrodeposition approach followed by thermal treatment that enhanced the performance of non-enzymatic glucose sensors. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis confirmed the successful deposition of CuO nanoparticles over the fiber surface. Amperometric and voltammetric studies of fiber-based microelectrodes (CuO@CNTFs) toward glucose sensing showed an excellent sensitivity of ∼3000 μA/mM cm², a low detection limit of 1.4 μM, and a wide linear range of up to 13 mM. The superior performance of the microelectrode is attributed to the synergistic effect of the electrocatalytic activity of CuO nanoparticles and the excellent conductivity of CNT fibers. A lower charge transfer resistance value obtained via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) also demonstrated the superior electrode performance. This work demonstrates a facile approach for developing CNT fiber-based microelectrodes as a promising solution for flexible and disposable non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

Kisspeptin and RF9 prevent paroxetine-induced changes in some parameters of seminal vesicle fluid in the male rats

The aim of the study was to examine possible impacts of paroxetine and agomelatine on the levels of some components that constitute the seminal vesicle fluid. As a second purpose, it was also aimed to examine how possible negative effects induced by paroxetine on seminal vesicle fluid components were affected by kisspeptin and RF9 (an RFamide-related peptide antagonist, RFRP). Forty-two male rats, aged 21 days, divided into six groups; control, sham, paroxetine, agomelatine, paroxetine + kisspeptin and paroxetine + RF9. Paroxetine (3.6 mg/kg) and agomelatine (10 mg/kg) were administrated by oral gavage. Kisspeptin (1 nmol) and RF9 (20 nmol) were administered intracerebroventricular (i.c.v). The experiments were ended on post-natal 120 days; fructose, vitamin E, sodium, potassium and magnesium levels were measured in seminal vesicle fluid. Fructose, vitamin E, magnesium and potassium levels were significantly decreased in seminal vesicle fluid from the rats treated with paroxetine but did not show significant differences following agomelatine administration. The co-administration of kisspeptin or RF9 with paroxetine prevented the paroxetine-induced negative effects on seminal vesicle fluid components. These results suggest that reduction in sperm fertilising ability caused by changes in seminal vesicle fluid can be seen in long-term antidepressant use. RF-9 and kisspeptin might have positive effects on long-term antidepressant use-induced infertility.

Wheat stem reserves and salinity tolerance: molecular dissection of fructan biosynthesis and remobilization to grains

Fructan accumulation and remobilization to grains under salinity can decrease dependency of the wheat tolerant cultivar on current photosynthesis and protect it from severe yield loss under salt stress. Tolerance of plants to abiotic stresses can be enhanced by accumulation of soluble sugars, such as fructan. The current research sheds light on the role of stem fructan remobilization on yield of bread wheat under salt stress conditions. Fructan accumulation and remobilization as well as relative expression of the major genes of fructan metabolism were investigated in the penultimate internodes of 'Bam' as the salt-tolerant and 'Ghods' as the salt-sensitive wheat cultivars under salt-stressed and controlled conditions and their correlations were analyzed. More fructan production and higher efficiency of fructan remobilization was detected in Bam cultivar under salinity. Up-regulation of sucrose: sucrose 1-fructosyltransferase (1-SST) and sucrose: fructan 6-fructosyltransferase (6-SFT) (fructan biosynthesis genes) at anthesis and up-regulation of fructan exohydrolase (1-FEH) and vacuolar invertase (IVR) genes (contributed to fructan metabolism) during grain filling stage and higher expression of sucrose transporter gene (SUT1) in Bam was in accordance with its induced fructan accumulation and remobilization under salt stress. A significant correlation was observed between weight density, WSCs and gene expression changes under salt stress. Based on the these results, increased fructan production and induced stem reserves remobilization under salinity can decrease dependency of the wheat tolerant cultivar on current photosynthesis and protect it from severe yield loss under salt stress conditions.

[Aseptic process validation and stability study of an injectable preparation of fructose (5%)-glycerol (10%) as part of a hospital clinical research program on endoscopic curative treatment for early epithelial neoplastic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract]

INTRODUCTION

As part of a hospital clinical research program on endoscopic curative treatment for early epithelial neoplastic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, a new hospital sterile and non-pyrogenic preparation of fructose (5%)-glycerol (10%) was realized. Under pharmaceutical legislation, the provision of this hospital preparation involves of aseptic process validation and achieve a stability study.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

After the aseptic process validation with Mediafill Test, the preparation was made under aseptic conditions associated with a sterilizing filtration according to the good practices preparation. Prepared flexible bags (100mL of solution) were stored for one year in a climatic chamber (25±2°C). To assess stability, the physicochemical controls (fructose concentration, glycerol concentration, hydroxy-methyl-5 furfural [5-HMF] concentration, sodium concentration, pH measure, osmolality and sub-visible particles count) and microbiological (bioburden, bacterial endotoxin and sterility) were performed at regular intervals for one year.

RESULTS

Neither significant decrease of fructose concentration, glycerol concentration and sodium concentration nor pH, 5-HMF, osmolality variations out of specifications were observed for one year. The sub-visible particles count, the bacterial endotoxin and sterility were in accordance with the European pharmacopoeia attesting limpidity, apyrogenicity and sterility of this injectable preparation.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

The hospital preparation was stable over one year at 25±2°C, ensuring safe administration in humans within the framework of this clinical research.
