Abstract
In vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) is involved in atherosclerotic pathogenesis. However, the role of TSP-1 in clinical atherosclerosis remains unknown. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between TSP-1 and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and examined whether it interacts with conventional cardiovascular risk factors. A total of 587 participants were enrolled from February 2018 to December 2021. TSP-1 was dichotomized based on median value. Carotid IMT was measured bilaterally in each segment, and the average value was taken as the overall IMT variable. Analysis of covariance models were used to ascertain the main and interaction effects of cardiovascular risk factors and circulating TSP-1 levels on carotid IMT. Those with high TSP-1 (n = 294) had significantly higher carotid IMT than did those with low TSP-1 (n = 293; 0.74 ± 0.12 vs 0.72 ± 0.11 mm; p = 0.011). After the combined effects of TSP-1 and vascular risk factors on carotid IMT were evaluated, an interaction effect on IMT was observed between TSP-1 and hypertension (adjusted F = 8.760; p = 0.003). Stratification analysis revealed that individuals with hypertension and high TSP-1 had significantly higher IMT than did those with low TSP-1 (adjusted p = 0.007). However, this difference was not observed in normotensive individuals (adjusted p = 0.636). In conclusion, this is the first study to provide clinical data supporting the correlation between TSP-1 and atherosclerosis. TSP-1 may be a crucial marker of increased susceptibility to atherosclerosis in individuals with hypertension.

Abstract
The ST-elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) and Non-ST-elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI) might occur because of coronary artery stenosis. The gene biomarkers apply to the clinical diagnosis and therapeutic decisions in Myocardial Infarction. The aim of this study was to introduce, enrich and estimate timely the blood gene profiles based on the high-throughput data for the molecular distinction of STEMI and NSTEMI. The text mining data (50 genes) annotated with DisGeNET data (144 genes) were merged with the GEO gene expression data (5 datasets) using R software. Then, the STEMI and NSTEMI networks were primarily created using the STRING server, and improved using the Cytoscape software. The high-score genes were enriched using the KEGG signaling pathways and Gene Ontology (GO). Furthermore, the genes were categorized to determine the NSTEMI and STEMI gene profiles. The time cut-off points were identified statistically by monitoring the gene profiles up to 30 days after Myocardial Infarction (MI). The gene heatmaps were clearly created for the STEMI (high-fold genes 69, low-fold genes 45) and NSTEMI (high-fold genes 68, low-fold genes 36). The STEMI and NSTEMI networks suggested the high-score gene profiles. Furthermore, the gene enrichment suggested the different biological conditions for STEMI and NSTEMI. The time cut-off points for the NSTEMI (4 genes) and STEMI (13 genes) gene profiles were established up to three days after Myocardial Infarction. The study showed the different pathophysiologic conditions for STEMI and NSTEMI. Furthermore, the high-score gene profiles are suggested to measure up to 3 days after MI to distinguish the STEMI and NSTEMI.

Abstract
Accumulation of ectopic pericardial adipose tissue has been associated with cardiovascular complications which, in part, may relate to adipose-derived factors that regulate vascular responses and angiogenesis. We sought to characterize adipose tissue microvascular angiogenic capacity in subjects who underwent elective cardiac surgeries including aortic, valvular, and coronary artery bypass grafting. Pericardial adipose tissue was collected intraoperatively and examined for angiogenic capacity. Capillary sprouting was significantly blunted (twofold, p <0.001) in subjects with coronary artery disease (CAD) (age 60 ± 9 years, body mass index [BMI] 32 ± 4 kg/m2, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C] 95 ± 46 mg/100 ml, n = 29) compared with age-, BMI-, and LDL-C matched subjects without angiographic obstructive CAD (age 59 ± 10 y, BMI 35 ± 9 kg/m2, LDL-C 101 ± 40 mg/100 ml, n = 12). For potential mechanistic insight, we performed mRNA expression analyses using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and observed no significant differences in pericardial fat gene expression of proangiogenic mediators vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2), and angiopoietin-1 (angpt1), or anti-angiogenic factors soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) and endostatin. In contrast, mRNA expression of anti-angiogenic thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) was significantly upregulated (twofold, p = 0.008) in CAD compared with non-CAD subjects, which was confirmed by protein western-immunoblot analysis. TSP-1 gene knockdown using short hairpin RNA lentiviral delivery significantly improved angiogenic deficiency in CAD (p <0.05). In conclusion, pericardial fat in subjects with CAD may be associated with an antiangiogenic profile linked to functional defects in vascularization capacity. Local paracrine actions of TSP-1 in adipose depots surrounding the heart may play a role in mechanisms of ischemic heart disease.

Abstract
Background von Willebrand factor (VWF) multimers are cleaved by A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS-13) into less active fragments. Thrombospondin 1 (TSP-1) competes with VWF's cleavage site, protecting it from degradation. Low ADAMTS-13 and high VWF have been associated with cardiovascular disease and atrial fibrillation (AF). Objectives We aimed to investigate whether VWF, ADAMTS-13, and TSP-1 are associated with clinical outcome. Methods Elderly patients with a recent myocardial infarction (MI) (n = 1027) were followed for 2 years. Blood was collected 2 to 8 weeks after the MI for ADAMTS-13, VWF, and TSP-1 measures. The primary endpoints (major adverse cardiovascular events; n = 210) included the first event of MI, stroke, heart failure hospitalization, coronary revascularization, and all-cause death. Total mortality was also registered (n = 56). The secondary endpoint was new-onset AF (n = 43). Results Concentrations of VWF, ADAMTS-13, and TSP-1 did not intercorrelate. The risk of major adverse cardiovascular events was altered in patients with VWF ≥ median (hazard ratio [HR], 1.4; 95% CI, 1.0-1.8; P = .03) and ADAMTS-13 ≥ median (HR, 0.7; 95% CI, 0.5-0.9; P = .02); however, it was not significant in adjusted models. VWF and ADAMTS-13 were significantly associated with total mortality, with a HR of 2.7 (95% CI, 1.6-4.6; P < .001) for VWF (Q4 vs. Q1-Q3) and HR of 0.3 (95% CI, 0.2-0.5; P < .001) for ADAMTS-13 (Q2-4 vs. Q1). The associations persisted in multivariable analysis, but the significance disappeared for VWF after correcting for high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. The risk of new-onset AF was lower in patients with VWF ≥ median (HR, 0.5; 95% CI, 0.3-1.0; P = .04]), and this was still significant after adjustments. Conclusion Although low ADAMTS-13 predicted death, the cardiovascular risk associated with VWF and ADAMTS-13 was weaker than previously reported. Low VWF is associated with new-onset AF and needs further research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thrombospondin-1, a large matricellular glycoprotein, exerts multifaced biological effects on the cardiovascular system and is correlated with cardiovascular diseases. Its plasma levels and correlation with in-hospital prognosis are yet unclear in the acute coronary syndrome population. The present study aimed to evaluate the correlation between thrombospondin-1 plasma levels and in-hospital adverse events in patients with acute coronary syndrome. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study. A total of 341 inpatients with acute coronary syndrome were recruited in Beijing Chaoyang Hosipital from May 2021 to November 2021. The thrombospondin-1 plasma levels were measured, and the in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events, including all-cause death, recurrent ischemia, arrhythmias, and heart failure, were recorded. This correlation was assessed by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The thrombospondin-1 plasma levels were higher in patients with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction and ST-elevation myocardial infarction compared to those in unstable angina (P < 0.001), while the differences between the two different types of myocardial infarction were not statistically different. Thrombospondin-1 plasma levels were correlated with GRACE score, leukocytes, neutrophils, platelets, troponin I, creatine kinase-MB, D-dimer, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and log10 brain natriuretic peptide. Furthermore, thrombospondin-1 plasma levels were associated with the in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Thrombospondin-1 plasma levels were higher in patients with myocardial infarction than those in unstable angina. The high thrombospondin-1 plasma levels were associated with in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events.

Abstract
The soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFR1 and sTNFR2) are suggested to play dual roles on physiological and pathophysiological actions of TNF-α. The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic changes of these biomarkers in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Blood was collected from 165 STEMI patients at admission, 1–3 days and 3 months after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and from 40 healthy blood donors. sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 were measured with ELISA. The plasma levels of both sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 were significantly higher than in healthy donors at all three time points. We found no significant differences in sTNFR1 or sTNFR2 when comparing patients with patent versus occluded culprit vessels, or between patients having a thrombus aspiration or not. Survival analysis was performed comparing patients with levels of biomarkers above and below the median values at that time point. We found significant differences in survival for sTNFR2 in acute samples (p = 0.0151) and for both sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 in samples 1–3 days after PCI (p = 0.0054 and p = 0.0003, respectively). Survival analyses suggest that sTNFR1 or sTNFR2 could be promising markers to predict mortality in STEMI patients after PCI.

Abstract
Pentraxin-3 (PTX3) and neprilysin have been associated with increased morbidity and mortality in chronic inflammatory disease and heart failure, but these biomarkers have been studied less in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We investigated the dynamic changes in these biomarkers, as well as the well-known C-reactive protein (CRP), in STEMI patients. PTX3, neprilysin and CRP were measured in samples from 165 STEMI patients, collected at the acute stage, 1–3 days after and 3 months after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and from 40 healthy donors. Patient survival was followed for approximately 8 years after the PCI. As compared with samples from healthy donors, plasma levels of CRP and PTX3 were significantly increased in the acute samples and 1–3 days after PCI, but not at 3 months. CRP levels peaked at 1–3 days, while PTX3 was similarly high in both acute and 1–3 days samples. For neprilysin, no significant differences were observed at the group level. We found no significant differences when comparing patients with patent versus occluded culprit vessels or between patients having a thrombus aspiration or not. However, we found a significant reduction in survival for individuals with PTX3 above the median, both for samples collected at the acute stage and 1–3 days after PCI (p = 0.0001 and p = 0.0008, respectively). For CRP, no significant differences were observed using this approach, but patients above the reference range for healthy donors in the acute samples showed significantly lower survival (p = 0.0476). Conclusions: Survival analysis suggests that PTX3 might be a promising marker to predict mortality in this patient population.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this pilot study was to clarify the acceptability and clinical efficacy of an oxygen-enriched oil-based gel for treatment of angular cheilitis. METHODS A class IIb medical preparation, packaged in appropriate syringes, was tested. Patients were instructed how to use the gel for 10 days: finger rub application (3 times daily) on the dried lesion after meals, without eating, drinking, or speaking for at least 30 min thereafter. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to assess whether there were any differences in the distributions of reported pain and lesion dimension. A microbiological examination was also performed with oral swabs; chi-squared test was used to compare the difference in the presence of microorganisms before and after treatment. RESULTS Thirty patients were treated. A significant improvement in reported outcome and a significant reduction in the initially measured largest dimension of the lesion were observed after use of the clinical protocol. Additionally, a significant reduction in the pathogen count was found. CONCLUSION Even if with limitations, data showed that this medical preparation facilitated prompt recovery from reported pain, without adverse reactions. Further work with a larger study population, and possibly a randomized control medication, will be needed.

Abstract
The development of research in genetic and biochemical fields has made it possible to investigate certain metabolic aspects of the microenvironment of chronic skin lesions, including altered cell signalling, highlighting its importance in determining the blockage of repair processes. The purpose of this prospective observational study is to evaluate the efficacy of a medical device consisting of a polyester scaffold enriched with an oleic matrix with controlled release of ROS in the management of LABC skin lesions. During the period from October 2018 to March 2020, 20 patients with locally advanced breast cancer were enrolled and ten were treated with the devices abovementioned. After 30 days of treatment all patients treated reported a general improvement in local conditions with reduction in ulceration area, exudate and odour. The results suggest that the application of these devices even in particular conditions (healthy and neoplastic tissue) does not lead to the onset of negative effects due to the release of ROS, though their role in tissue repair requires further study to fully understand their potential and increase the fields of application of the device by exploiting its modulation capabilities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Atrial remodeling is the main developmental cause of atrial arrhythmias (AA), which may induce atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, and frequent premature atrial beats in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) has been shown to play an important role in inflammatory and fibrotic processes, but its role in atrial arrhythmias is not well described. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of TSP-1 in AMI patients with atrial arrhythmias. METHODS A total of 219 patients with AMI who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention and with no previous arrhythmias were included. TSP-1 were analyzed in plasma samples. Patients were classified into 2 groups, namely, with and without AA during the acute phase of MI. Continuous electrocardiographic monitoring was used for AA diagnosis in hospital. RESULTS Twenty-four patients developed AA. Patients with AA had higher TSP-1 levels (29.01 ± 25.87 μg/mL vs 18.36 ± 10.89 μg/mL, p < 0.001) than those without AA. AA patients also tended to be elderly (65.25 ± 9.98 years vs 57.47 ± 10.78 years, p < 0.001), had higher Hs-CRP (39.74 ± 43.50 mg/L vs 12.22 ± 19.25 mg/L, p < 0.001) and worse heart function. TSP-1 (OR 1.033; 95% CI 1.003-1.065, p = 0.034), Hs-CRP (OR 1.023; 95% CI 1.006-1.041, p = 0.008), age (OR 1.067; 95% CI 1.004-1.135, p = 0.038) and LVDd (OR 1.142; 95% CI 1.018-1.282, p = 0.024) emerged as independent risk factors for AA in AMI patients. CONCLUSION TSP-1 is a potential novel indicator of atrial arrhythmias during AMI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate serum levels of von Willebrand factor lytic protease (ADAMTS13) and thrombospondin-1 (TSP1) in patients with different types of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and their correlation with the patients' clinical prognosis. OBJECTIVE According to their disease history, results of angiography and clinical biochemical tests, a total of 405 patients undergoing coronary angiography, were divided into unstable angina (UAP) group (n=215), acute myocardial infarction (AMI) group (n=96), and angiographically normal group (n=94). Serum ADAMTS13 and TSP1 levels were detected in all the patients, who were followed up for 15 months to evaluate the occurrence of long-term major cardiac adverse events (MACE). OBJECTIVE Serum ADAMTS13 level was significantly lower and TSP1 level was significantly higher in AMI group and UAP group than in the normal group (P < 0.001). Serum ADAMTS13 and TSP1 levels were negative correlated in ACS patients (R=-0.577, P < 0.001). The patients experiencing MACE had significantly different serum TSP1 level from those without MACE (P < 0.05). Cox proportion regression model analysis showed that TSP1 was a risk factor affecting the occurrence of MACE in ACS patients; Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the patients with high levels of TSP1 had a higher incidence of longterm MACE than those with low TSP1 levels. OBJECTIVE A lowered serum ADAMTS13 level and an elevated TSP1 level can support the diagnosis of ACS. An elevated TSP1 level may serve as an indicator for predicting the risk of MACE in patients with ACS.

Abstract
Thrombospondin (TSP)-1 and TSP-2 are matricellular proteins in the extracellular matrix (ECM), which serve a significant role in the pathological processes of various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). The multiple effects of TSP-1 and TSP-2 are due to their ability to interact with various ligands, such as structural components of the ECM, cytokines, cellular receptors, growth factors, proteases and other stromal cell proteins. TSP-1 and TSP-2 regulate the structure and activity of the aforementioned ligands by interacting directly or indirectly with them, thereby regulating the activity of different types of cells in response to environmental stimuli. The pathological processes of numerous CVDs are associated with the degradation and remodeling of ECM components, and with cell migration, dysfunction and apoptosis, which may be regulated by TSP-1 and TSP-2 through different mechanisms. Therefore, investigating the role of TSP-1 and TSP-2 in different CVDs and the potential signaling pathways they are associated with may provide a new perspective on potential therapies for the treatment of CVDs. In the present review, the current understanding of the roles TSP-1 and TSP-2 serve in various CVDs were summarized. In addition, the interacting ligands and the potential pathways associated with these thrombospondins in CVDs are also discussed.
