Outbreak of adenovirus type 4 conjunctivitis in South Australia

An outbreak of adenovirus type 4 conjunctivitis occurred in South Australia between April and November 1992. Eye swabs were submitted by general practitioners and ophthalmologists who had seen patients with clinical conjunctivitis or keratitis. Apart from interfamilial spread, there were no other common epidemiological factors. Adenovirus was isolated from the eye swabs of 38 patients. Isolates were typed by neutralisation tests and restriction endonuclease cleavage patterns and found to be adenovirus type 4. This report serves to illustrate an infrequent cause of epidemic conjunctivitis, namely adenovirus type 4. There was no demonstrable focus of the outbreak.

Prolonged outbreak of Norwalk gastroenteritis in an isolated guest house

During November and December 1982, a persistent outbreak of gastroenteritis took place in an isolated guest house. An estimated 26% of the changing population of guests and staff developed symptoms. Laboratory studies implicated Norwalk agent as the cause of illness, although the original source of the outbreak could not be established. Information on clinical features of the illness, its mode of spread, and eventual control is presented.

Clinical and aetiological study of adenoviral conjunctivitis, with special reference to adenovirus types 4 and 19 infections

The clinical and aetiological findings are presented on 343 patients with clinical adenoviral conjunctivitis treated between July 1979 and July 1980 at 3 eye clinics in Sapporo. The age of the patients ranged from 12 days to 79 years, and the monthly incidence of the disease from 9 to 83, with clustering in the summer season. The aetiological diagnosis was established in 196 (57%) of 343 patients: adenovirus 3 in 24 cases; adenovirus 4 in 33 cases, including one case serologically diagnosed; adenovirus 8 in 124 cases; and adenovirus 19 in 15 cases. The different serotypes caused different clinical pictures. Adenovirus 19 conjunctivitis was more severe, with keratitis and preauricular lymphadenopathy more frequent than that of adenovirus 3 conjunctivitis. Adenovirus 4 conjunctivitis was generally similar to adenovirus 3 conjunctivitis. The clinical difference between the 2 groups adenoviruses 3 and 4, and adenoviruses 8 and 9, was statistically significant. Although in Japan adenovirus 8 was the most prevalent, adenoviruses 4 and 19 should be considered as causative agents of adenoviral conjunctivitis.

Recovery of viruses from vegetable surfaces

The efficiency of a system developed for the recovery of viruses contaminating large quantities of vegetables was investigated in the laboratory and tested in the field. Viruses seeded onto a number of leafy vegetables in the laboratory were eluted with a phosphate-buffered saline solution (pH 9.0). The eluate was clarified by glass wool filtration, and any viruses present were concentrated by adsorption to a Filterite pleated cartridge filter, eluted with 3% beef extract (pH 9.0), and further concentrated by organic flocculation. At least 24 liters of vegetable eluate could be concentrated to 70 to 80 ml, equivalent to a greater than 99.5% reduction in volume. With this system, poliovirus was recovered with a mean efficiency of 58% for all vegetables tested. Adenovirus was recovered from lettuce with a slightly lower mean efficiency (55%). Poliovirus was recovered from large quantities of cabbage for up to 5 days in the field after spray irrigation of relatively low levels of virus, even when heavy rain fell before sampling.

Echovirus type 11 infection in Melbourne--1953 to 1980

Echovirus type 11 (echo 11) has been isolated at the virus laboratory of Fairfield Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, in 20 of the 28 years since the laboratory was established. During this time two major epidemics have occurred; the first, in 1971-2 involved 90 patients with aseptic meningitis or respiratory illness. The second began in June 1979 and lasted for 11 months, during which echo 11 was isolated from 174 patients admitted to Fairfield Hospital, other Victorian and Tasmanian hospitals and a children's reception centre. The patients' illnesses included viral meningitis (66%), fever (10%), respiratory infections (7%) and gastroenteritis (2%). One baby died. Echo 11 was recovered from nasopharyngeal swabs or aspirates, cerebrospinal fluid and faecal specimens and was isolated most frequently in the Borrie cell line. Isolates were readily identified by immune electron microscopy and/or neutralization tests.

Adenovirus eye infections in an Australian city, 1972-9

A number of adenovirus serotypes have been associated with both sporadic cases and outbreaks of conjunctivitis and pharyngoconjunctival fever but only adenovirus type 8 and adenovirus type 19 have been responsible for wide-spread epidemic kerato-conjunctivitis. In Melbourne, Australia, in the past eight years these two serotypes have been prevalent, resulting in an outbreak of adenovirus type 8 kerato-conjunctivitis in 1976-7 followed by adenovirus type 19 kerato-conjunctivitis in 1978-9. During these two periods of peak incidence, 53 cases of adenovirus type 8 and 43 cases of adenovirus type 19 kerato-conjunctivitis were confirmed by isolation.

Purification of adenovirus 4 type-specific hemagglutinins for use in diagnostic counterelectrophoresis tests

Three type-specific hemagglutinins of adenovirus (AV) 4 were purified, tested for various activities, and used as immunogens in rabbits. The components were purified by anion exchange and exclusion chromatographies to purification factors of 33, 20, and 37, respectively, and were identified as fiber (polypeptide, mol wt 70,000; incomplete hemagglutinin), penton (mol wt greater than 400,000; incomplete hemagglutinin; possession of cytotoxic activity), and dodecon (mol wt greater than 400,000; complete hemagglutinin; appearance by electron microscopy). Rabbit antisera to these hemagglutinating components possessed type-specific hemagglutination-inhibition and serum neutralization antibodies and were thoroughly evaluated for potency and specificty in immunodiffusion (ID), immunoelectrophoresis, and counterelectrophoresis (CE) tests. The anti-fiber and anti-dodecon sera were highly type-specific in ID and CE tests with a battery of commonly isolated AV serotypes; the anti-penton serum was similarly specific after it was absorbed with AV 2 hexons. These sera were thus proved to be suitable reagents for use in both the routine diagnostic ID test and the more rapid CE test.
