Potential to mitigate ammonia emission from slurry by increasing dietary fermentable fiber through inclusion of tropical byproducts in practical diets for growing pigs

A review of limitations to using cassava meal in poultry diets and the potential role of exogenous microbial enzymes

Cassava (Manihot esculenta), a crop grown in the tropics, is increasingly becoming a vital feed resource for human beings and livestock. Traditionally, cassava has been used primarily as a source of food for humans. However, it is becoming an increasingly important ingredient in livestock feed. The use of cassava leaves and roots in poultry diets is limited because of nutrient imbalances and toxins (hydrogen cyanide (HCN)) found in them. High HCN is reduced to innocuous levels by processing the ingredient using a simple sun drying method. Plant fibre content can be reduced and made available for use by poultry through the use of exogenous enzymes. More recent innovative interventions in biotechnology have brought about various exogenous enzymes that can help improve the digestibility of fibrous diets. These include, among others, carbohydrases, proteases and phytases. The extent to which the animals utilise nutrients is influenced by the type of enzyme and the physicochemical properties of the feed ingredient. This review aims to collate information on the current state of knowledge on the use of exogenous microbial enzymes in diets containing cassava and how the enzymes that target carbohydrates might be useful in making nutrient available for poultry.

Effects of Different Laying Hen Species on Odour Emissions

Odour is one of the main environmental concerns in the laying hen industry and may also influence animal health and production performance. Previous studies showed that odours from the laying hen body are primarily produced from the microbial fermentation (breakdown) of organic materials in the caecum, and different laying hen species may have different odour production potentials. This study was conducted to evaluate the emissions of two primary odorous gases, ammonia (NH₃) and hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), from six different laying hen species (Hyline, Lohmann, Nongda, Jingfen, Xinghua and Zhusi). An in vitro fermentation technique was adopted in this study, which has been reported to be an appropriate method for simulating gas production from the microbial fermentation of organic materials in the caecum. The results of this study show that Jingfen produced the greatest volume of gas after 12 h of fermentation (p < 0.05). Hyline had the highest, while Lohmann had the lowest, total NH₃ emissions (p < 0.05). The total H₂S emissions of Zhusi and Hyline were higher than those of Lohmann, Jingfen and Xinghua (p < 0.05), while Xinghua exhibited the lowest total H₂S emissions (p < 0.05). Of the six laying hen species, Xinghua was identified as the best species because it produced the lowest total amount of NH₃ + H₂S (39.94 µg). The results for the biochemical indicators showed that the concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from Zhusi was higher than that for the other five species, while the pH in Zhusi was lower (p < 0.01), and the concentrations of ammonium nitrogen (NH⁴⁺), uric acid and urea in Xinghua were lower than those in the other species (p < 0.01). Hyline had the highest change in SO₄^2- concentration during the fermentation processes (p < 0.05). In addition, the results of the correlation analysis suggested that NH₃ emission is positively related to urease activities but is not significantly related to the ureC gene number. Furthermore, H₂S emission was observed to be significantly related to the reduction of SO₄^2- but showed no connection with the aprA gene number. Overall, our findings provide a reference for future feeding programmes attempting to reduce odour pollution in the laying hen industry.

Effect of increasing inclusion rates of tofu by-product in diets of growing pigs on nitrogen balance and ammonia emission from manure

To reduce competition with human-edible feed resources, it is of interest to incorporate by-products from the food industry in animal feeds. The current research investigated the effect of including increasing amounts of tofu by-product (TF) in practical pig diets on animal performance, nitrogen balance and ammonia emissions from manure. Two experiments were conducted including a control diet without TF, containing 160 g/kg dietary non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs) and three diets including 122, 246 and 360 g TF/kg DM (TF122, TF246 and TF360, respectively) to reach 220, 280 and 360 g/kg NSP. All diets had the same level of CP and protein digestible in the small intestine which particularly was realized by replacing rice bran with TF. Animal performance was assessed in a first experiment with 40 growing barrows with initial BW of 26.6 ± 1.80 kg (M ± SD) being allocated to the 4 treatments, during 2 growth phases (i.e. until 50 kg BW and from 50 to 80 kg BW). In the growth phase until 50 kg, feed intake and average daily gain (ADG) were linearly reduced by dietary TF inclusion, while this negative impact disappeared during the second growth phase (50 to 80 kg BW). Tofu by-product inclusion even positively affected the feed conversion ratio during this second growth phase (3.4 to 2.7 kg feed/kg ADG for 0 to 360 g/kg dietary TF). Over the entire growth period, performance and feed intake were negatively affected at the highest dietary TF level. Experiment 2 was conducted to assess digestibility, nitrogen balance and ammonia emission from manure. For this purpose, 16 pigs with BW of 62.8 ± 3.6 kg (M ± SD) were assigned to either 1 of the 4 treatments. There was no difference in total tract apparent digestibility of dietary organic matter or CP, while NDF digestibility increased with increasing TF level, suggesting increasing importance of the hindgut fermentation when digesting diets with increasing TF levels. Nevertheless, this was not reflected in increasing levels of faecal volatile fatty acids or purines, nor in reduced manure pH. As a result, ammonia emission from slurry was not reduced through dietary TF inclusion, despite the linear decrease in urinary nitrogen. In conclusion, TF can be included in pigs' diets up to an inclusion rate of 25% without risk of impaired animal performance; however, this dietary strategy fails to mitigate ammonia emission from slurry.
