Does Resilience Predict Ostomy Adjustment in Patients With Permanent Ostomy?

PURPOSE

This study aimed to evaluate associations between resilience and ostomy adjustment in a group of patients with a permanent ostomy.

DESIGN

Descriptive, correlational study.

SUBJECTS AND SETTING

One hundred participants were interviewed; most were male (N = 56; 56%), married (N = 77; 77%), illiterate (N = 46; 46%), and self-employed (N = 35; 35%). The most frequent condition leading to ostomy surgery was colorectal cancer (N = 24; 24%). A majority (N = 43; 43%) had been diagnosed with cancer 1 to 5 years before data collection, and 35 (35%) had lived with an ostomy for 1 to 5 years. Participants were recruited from an ostomy clinic of in Kerman, located in southeastern Iran. Data were collected from August to October 2019.

METHODS

Data were collected via interviews. A questionnaire, developed for purposes of this study, was developed that included items querying demographic and pertinent clinical characteristics and 2 validated instruments, the Resilience Scale and the Ostomy Adjustment Inventory-23 (OAI-23). Data were analyzed using t tests, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficient, and linear regression.

RESULTS

The mean score for ostomy adjustment was 43.37 (SD = 11.57) indicating less than optimal adjustment to life with an ostomy. The mean score of the Resilience Scale was 104.56 (SD = 25.98); most participants (n = 67, 67%) had very low and low resilience. Resilience was weakly associated with ostomy adjustment; specifically, participants who scored higher on the Resilience Scale tended to score higher on the OAI-23 (r = 0.32, P = .006). Linear regression indicated that resilience had the greatest predictive effect on ostomy adjustment (P = .004).

CONCLUSIONS

Results suggest that higher levels of resilience may facilitate adjustment to a permanent ostomy. Findings indicate that nurses should design and implement programs to aid ostomy adjustment via resilience assessment.

Defining and Measuring Resilience in Children with a Chronic Disease: a Scoping Review

More than 25% of all children grow up with a chronic disease. They are at higher risk for developmental and psychosocial problems. However, children who function resiliently manage to adapt positively to these challenges. We aim to systematically review how resilience is defined and measured in children with a chronic disease. A search of PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and PsycINFO was performed on December 9, 2022, using resilience, disease, and child/adolescent as search terms. Two reviewers independently screened articles for inclusion according to predefined criteria. Extraction domains included study characteristics, definition, and instruments assessing resilience outcomes, and resilience factors. Fifty-five out of 8766 articles were identified as relevant. In general, resilience was characterized as positive adaptation to adversity. The included studies assessed resilience by the outcomes of positive adaptation, or by resilience factors, or both. We categorized the assessed resilience outcomes into three groups: personal traits, psychosocial functioning, and disease-related outcomes. Moreover, myriad of resilience factors were measured, which were grouped into internal resilience factors (cognitive, social, and emotional competence factors), disease-related factors, and external factors (caregiver factors, social factors, and contextual factors). Our scoping review provides insight into the definitions and instruments used to measure resilience in children with a chronic disease. More knowledge is needed on which resilience factors are related to positive adaptation in specific illness-related challenges, which underlying mechanisms are responsible for this positive adaptation, and how these underlying mechanisms interact with one another.

Influence of state of health and personality factors of resilience and coping in healthy subjects and those with diabetes

Introduction

Currently, the most common chronic metabolic disease in our society is Diabetes Mellitus. The diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus supposes an impact for the patient, since it requires a modification in the lifestyle, which demands a great capacity for adaptation and modification of habits. The aim of the study was to determine whether personality factors and health status influence resilience and coping strategies in a sample of healthy and diabetic subjects.

Methodology

The sample included a total of 401 subjects (201 patients with Diabetes and 200 without pathology). The instruments applied for data collection were: Sociodemographic data questionnaire, the Resilience Scale, the Coping Strategies Questionnaire and The "Big Five" factor taxonomy. The data collection period was approximately 2 years (between February 2018 and January 2020).

Results

Certain personality factors, such as Emotional Stability, Integrity, Conscientiousness and Extraversion, were positively related to Resilience. Additionally, Emotional Stability, Integrity, and Extraversion were positively associated with Rational Coping. On the other hand, emotional stability, agreeableness and extraversion were negatively related to emotional coping. In relation to health status, the absence of pathology is related to the use of rational strategies more than to the diagnosis of diabetes. Therefore, the participants in this study present different psychological patterns depending on personality and health status.

Conclusions

The present study shows that the subjects of the sample present different psychological patterns depending on Personality and health status.

The role of covid‐19 anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty in predicting resilience

Resilience is one of the protective factors for mental health. The aim of this study is to reveal the role of COVID‐19 anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty in predicting resilience in adulthood. To this end, data were collected from 533 adults (359 women‐174 men). A hierarchical regression analysis was performed, controlling for the effects of gender and presence of a chronic disease on the prediction of resilience. Results showed that intolerance of uncertainty and COVID‐19 anxiety were statistically significant predictors of resilience. Gender and presence of a chronic disease were not statistically significant in predicting resilience. These results indicate that intolerance of uncertainty plays an important role in explaining resilience.

The relationship between personality traits and marital satisfaction: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Personality traits can be used to predict an individual's behaviors in different life situations, including marital life situations. Marital satisfaction that is influenced by different factors is a criterion used to assess couples' relationship quality. The goal of the present study was to review Iranian studies on the correlation between personality traits and marital satisfaction.

METHODS

In this systematic review, all the related Iranian studies in international databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science (ISI) and Scopus, and national databases, including Scientific Information Database (SID) and MagIran were reviewed. The following keywords and also combinations of them were used to search the databases: "Marital satisfaction," "Personality traits," "Personality factors," "Big five model of personality," and "Iran."

RESULTS

A total of 18 correlational studies, without any time limitation, with a total sample of 4049, were reviewed. The following correlation coefficients were found between marital satisfaction and personality traits: r = - 0.439 with neuroticism (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 0.27-0.60), r = 0.833 with extraversion (95% CI: 0.77-0.88), r = 0.777 with openness (95% CI: 0.70-0.84), r = 0.855 with agreeableness (95% CI: 0.80-0.90), and r = 0.90 with conscientiousness (95% CI: 0.84-0.95).

CONCLUSIONS

Couples high in Neuroticism experience lower levels of marital satisfaction, and couples high in Conscientiousness are more satisfied with their marital life.

Health literacy among Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Health literacy is one of the most important determinants of health. Limited health literacy can leads to reduced adherence to treatment, repeated hospitalizations, and increased diseases complications. Several studies on health literacy among Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes have reported different prevalences of health literacy. The present study is aimed to determine through a systematic review and meta-analysis the prevalence of adequate health literacy in the Iranian population. A total of 8 articles that met the inclusion criteria, published from inception until December 2018, were collected. Articles were searched using the following keywords and their possible combinations: Health Literacy, Illiteracy, Functional Health Literacy, Diabetes, Diabetes Mellitus, and Iran. The data were analyzed using meta-analysis and the random-effects model was used to obtain a pooled prevalence estimate along with its 95% confidence interval. Heterogeneity among the studies was assessed using the I² statistic. Analyses were performed using STATA software, version 12. The overall prevalences of inadequate and borderline health literacy among Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes were 43.47% (95% CI: 31-55.95) and 26.34% (95% CI: 19.49-33.19), respectively. In addition, the prevalence of adequate health literacy among patients with type 2 diabetes was 29.72% (95% CI: 22.79-36.64). There was no significant relationship between health literacy with year of publication, sample size, and patients' age. Inadequate health literacy is high (43.5%) among Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes. This makes it necessary to provide interventions aimed at improving their heath literacy which will reduce hospitalizations and diseases complications.

Health-related quality of life in Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes: An updated meta-analysis

Diabetes is the most common metabolic causes of increased mortality rate due to its multiple complications. Diabetes, thus, influences patients' quality of life because of its resultant physical disabilities and mental health problems. This study aimed to investigate health-related quality of life among Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes. In this meta-analysis study, a search was conducted using the keywords: Quality of Life, Health-Related Quality of Life, QoL, HRQoL, Shortform questionnaire 36, SF-36, Diabetes and Iran in the national and international databases such as SID, MagIran, ISI/Web of Science, PubMed [including Medline], and Scopus between 2011 and 2018. Based on the heterogeneity of data, the random effects model was used. Data was analyzed using the Stata software version 14. Overall, 17 studies were eligible, with a total sample size of 5472 patients, and they showed that the mean score of the physical dimension in patients with type 2 diabetes (53.5, 95% CI: 43.1-63.9) was less than the mean of mental dimension score (54.5, 95% CI: 47-61.9). By increasing age of the samples, the mean of the HRQoL score of the Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes was significantly decreased (p = 0.015). The highest and lowest scores for the quality of life subscales were social function and general health, respectively. In conclusion, patients with type 2 diabetes have been shown to have moderate quality of life. Providing solutions to improve the quality of life in this group of patients, especially in the physical aspect, is required.

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women: A systematic review and meta-analysis in Iran

Metabolic syndrome is a set of cardiovascular risk factors that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mortality. Women are at risk of developing metabolic syndrome as they enter the postmenopausal period. The present systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Iranian postmenopausal women. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, 16 national articles published in Persian and English were gathered without time limit. National databases such as SIDs, IranMedex and MagIran, and international databases such as Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed and Scopus were used to search the relevant studies. We searched for articles using the keywords "menopause", "postmenopausal", "metabolic syndrome", "MetSyn", and their combinations. Data were analyzed using the meta-analysis method and the random effects model. Analysis of 16 selected articles with a sample size of 5893 people showed that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Iranian postmenopausal women was 51.6% (95% CI: 43-60). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome based on ATP III and IDF criteria was 54% (95% CI: 59-63) and 50% (95% CI: 45-56), respectively. Based on the results of univariate meta-regression analysis, the increase in the mean age of postmenopausal women (p = 0.001) and sample size (p = 0.029), the prevalence of metabolic syndrome increased significantly. More than half of postmenopausal women in Iran suffer from metabolic syndrome. Providing training programs for postmenopausal women to prevent and control cardiovascular disease and its complications seems to be necessary.
