Abstract
Rodent models have been commonly employed in oral microbiota research to investigate the relationship between bacteria and oral disease. Nevertheless, to apply the knowledge acquired from studies conducted on rodents to a human context, it is crucial to consider the significant spatial and temporal parallels and differences between the oral microbiota of mice and humans. Initially, we outline the comparative physiology and microbiology of the oral cavity of rodents and humans. Additionally, we highlight the strong correlation between the oral microbiome of rodents and genetic makeup, which is influenced by factors including vendor, husbandry practices, and environmental conditions. All of these factors potentially impact the replicability of studies on rodent microbiota and the resulting conclusions. Next, we direct our attention toward the diversity in the microbiome within mice models of disease and highlight the diversity that may potentially affect the characteristics of diseases and, in turn, alter the ability to replicate research findings and apply them to real-world situations. Furthermore, we explore the practicality of oral microbial models for complex oral microbial diseases in future investigations by examining the concept of gnotobiotic and germ-free mouse models. Finally, we stress the importance of investigating suitable techniques for characterizing and managing genetically modified organisms. Future research should consider these aspects to improve oral microbiome research's translational potential.

Abstract
PURPOSE Keratin 14 (KRT14) is hypothesized to be involved in the pathogenesis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) based on its tumorigenic role in various cancers and its relationship with the prognosis of other urinary system malignancies. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation of KRT14 with tumor properties and prognosis in RCC patients. METHODS Data from 180 RCC patients who received tumor resection were retrospectively reviewed. The KRT14 was assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining in tumor tissues and non-tumor tissues. RESULTS KRT14 was insufficiently expressed in both tumor and non-tumor tissues, with median (interquartile range) IHC score of 2.0 (0.0-3.4) and 1.0 (0.0-2.0), respectively. While it was relatively higher in tumor versus non-tumor tissues (P < 0.001). Besides, tumor KRT14 was positively correlated with the pathological grade (P = 0.038), tumor size (P = 0.012), T stage (P = 0.006), and TNM stage (P = 0.018). Interestingly, tumor KRT14 high predicted shorter accumulating recurrence-free survival (RFS) (P = 0.003) and accumulating overall survival (OS) (P = 0.001), which was further verified by the multivariate Cox's regression analysis (both P < 0.05). Furthermore, tumor KRT14 high estimated shorter RFS and OS from the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis and Human Protein ATLAS databases (all P < 0.05). Subgroup analyses indicated that the correlation of tumor KRT14 with accumulating RFS and accumulating OS was more pronounced in RCC patients with better physical status (such as age < 65 years and better eastern cooperative oncology group performance status) and higher tumor stages (such as higher pathological grade). CONCLUSION High KRT14 in tumor tissue could reflect an advanced tumor features and unsatisfying survival in RCC patients.

Abstract
Most so-called "beneficial bacteria" in gut microbiota are Gram-positive, and TLR6 recognizes the peptidoglycan (PGN) present in their cell walls. We hypothesized that a high TLR6 expression status predicts a more favorable prognosis after esophagectomy. We used an ESCC tissue microarray (TMA) to examine TLR6 expression status in ESCC patients and to determine whether TLR6 expression status correlates with prognosis after curative esophagectomy. We also examined whether PGN influences the cell proliferation activity of ESCC lines. Clinical ESCC samples from 177 patients tested for the expression of TLR6 were categorized as 3+ (n = 17), 2+ (n = 48), 1+ (n = 68), or 0 (n = 44). High TLR6 expression (3+ and 2+) correlated with significantly more favorable 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) after esophagectomy than a lower TLR6 expression (1+ and 0). Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that TLR6 expression status is an independent prognostic factor that affects 5-year OS. PGN significantly inhibited the cell proliferation activity of ESCC lines. This is the first study to show that high TLR6 expression status predicts a more favorable prognosis in locally advanced thoracic ESCC patients after curative esophagectomy. PGN released from "beneficial bacteria" seems to have potential to inhibit the cell proliferation activity of ESCC.
