Current role of magnetic resonance imaging on assessing and monitoring the efficacy of phototherapy

Phototherapy, also known as photobiological therapy, is a non-invasive and highly effective physical treatment method. Its broad use in clinics has led to significant therapeutic results. Phototherapy parameters, such as intensity, wavelength, and duration, can be adjusted to create specific therapeutic effects for various medical conditions. Meanwhile, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), with its diverse imaging sequences and excellent soft-tissue contrast, provides a valuable tool to understand the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of phototherapy. This review explores the clinical applications of commonly used phototherapy techniques, gives a brief overview of how phototherapy impacts different diseases, and examines MRI's role in various phototherapeutic scenarios. We argue that MRI is crucial for precise targeting, treatment monitoring, and prognosis assessment in phototherapy. Future research and applications will focus on personalized diagnosis and monitoring of phototherapy, expanding its applications in treatment and exploring multimodal imaging technology to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic precision and effectiveness.

Advances in nano-immunotherapy for hematological malignancies

Hematological malignancies (HMs) encompass a diverse group of blood neoplasms with significant morbidity and mortality. Immunotherapy has emerged as a validated and crucial treatment modality for patients with HMs. Despite notable advancements having been made in understanding and implementing immunotherapy for HMs over the past decade, several challenges persist. These challenges include immune-related adverse effects, the precise biodistribution and elimination of therapeutic antigens in vivo, immune tolerance of tumors, and immune evasion by tumor cells within the tumor microenvironment (TME). Nanotechnology, with its capacity to manipulate material properties at the nanometer scale, has the potential to tackle these obstacles and revolutionize treatment outcomes by improving various aspects such as drug targeting and stability. The convergence of nanotechnology and immunotherapy has given rise to nano-immunotherapy, a specialized branch of anti-tumor therapy. Nanotechnology has found applications in chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy, cancer vaccines, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and other immunotherapeutic strategies for HMs. In this review, we delineate recent developments and discuss current challenges in the field of nano-immunotherapy for HMs, offering novel insights into the potential of nanotechnology-based therapeutic approaches for these diseases.

Photothermal therapy: a novel potential treatment for prostate cancer

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a leading cause of cancer-related death in men, and most PCa patients treated with androgen deprivation therapy will progress to metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) due to the lack of efficient treatment. Recently, lots of research indicated that photothermal therapy (PTT) was a promising alternative that provided an accurate and efficient prostate cancer therapy. A photothermic agent (PTA) is a basic component of PPT and is divided into organic and inorganic PTAs. Besides, the combination of PTT and other therapies, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT), immunotherapy (IT), chemotherapy (CT), etc., provides an more efficient strategy for PCa therapy. Here, we introduce basic information about PTT and summarize the PTT treatment strategies for prostate cancer. Based on recent works, we think the combination of PPT and other therapies provides a novel possibility for PCa, especially CRPC clinical treatment.

Layered Double Hydroxide-Based PdCux@LDH Alloy Nanozyme for a Singlet Oxygen-Boosted Sonodynamic Therapy

Redox nanozymes have demonstrated tremendous promise in disrupting cellular homeostasis toward cancer therapy, but a dysfunctional competition of diverse activities makes it normally restricted by the complex tumor microenvironment (TME). As palladium nanocrystals can achieve the precise regulation of the enzyme-like activity by regulating exposed crystal planes, noble metal nanoalloys can enhance the enzyme-like activity by promoting electron transfer and enhanced active sites. Herein, bimetallic nanoalloys with optimized enzymatic activity were intelligently designed via the interaction between the Pd and layered double hydroxide, denoted as PdCux@LDH. This PdCux@LDH is able to produce long-lived singlet oxygen (1O2) with high efficiency and selectivity for ultrasound-improved cancer therapy. In addition, this PdCux@LDH nanozyme demonstrated unique surface-dependent multienzyme-mimicking activities for catalyzing cascade reactions: oxidase (OXD)- and catalase (CAT)-mimicking activities. Interestingly, ultrasound (US) stimulation can further improve the dual-enzyme-mimicking activities and impart superior reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation activity, thereby further consuming nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) to cause mitochondrial dysfunction, resulting in a highly efficient alloy nanozyme-mediated cancer therapy. This work opens a new research avenue to apply nanozymes for effective sonodynamic therapies (SDT).

High-Spatial-Resolution Benchtop X-ray Fluorescence Imaging through Bragg-Diffraction-Based Focusing with Bent Mosaic Graphite Crystals: A Simulation Study

X-ray fluorescence imaging (XFI) can localize diagnostic or theranostic entities utilizing nanoparticle (NP)-based probes at high resolution in vivo, in vitro, and ex vivo. However, small-animal benchtop XFI systems demonstrating high spatial resolution (variable from sub-millimeter to millimeter range) in vivo are still limited to lighter elements (i.e., atomic number Z≤45). This study investigates the feasibility of focusing hard X-rays from solid-target tubes using ellipsoidal lens systems composed of mosaic graphite crystals with the aim of enabling high-resolution in vivo XFI applications with mid-Z (42≤Z≤64) elements. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to characterize the proposed focusing-optics concept and provide quantitative predictions of the XFI sensitivity, in silico tumor-bearing mice models loaded with palladium (Pd) and barium (Ba) NPs. Based on simulation results, the minimum detectable total mass of PdNPs per scan position is expected to be on the order of a few hundred nanograms under in vivo conform conditions. PdNP masses as low as 150 ng to 50 ng could be detectable with a resolution of 600 μm when imaging abdominal tumor lesions across a range of low-dose (0.8 μGy) to high-dose (8 μGy) exposure scenarios. The proposed focusing-optics concept presents a potential step toward realizing XFI with conventional X-ray tubes for high-resolution applications involving interesting NP formulations.

Palladium Metal Nanocomposites Based on PEI-Functionalized Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots: Synthesis, Characterization, Density Functional Theory Modeling, and Cell Cycle Arrest Effects on Human Ovarian Cancer Cells

In this study, the synthesis, characterization, density functional theory calculations (DFT), and effect of polyethylenimine (PEI)-functionalized nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (PEI N-GQDs) and their palladium metal nanoparticles nanocomposites (PdNPs/PEI N-GQDs) on cancer cells were extensively investigated. The focus also includes investigating their cytotoxic and apoptotic effects on ovarian cancer cells, which pose a serious risk to women's health and have high death rates from delayed diagnosis, inadequate response to treatment, and decreased survival. Graphene quantum dots and their palladium nanocomposites were differentially effective against ovarian cancer cell lines. In particular, the smaller particle size and morphology of PdNPs/PEI N-GQDs nanocomposites compared with PEI N-GQDs probably enhance their activity through highly improved uptake by cells. These findings emphasize the importance of particle size in composite drugs for efficient cancer treatment. DFT results revealed that the Pd-containing nanocomposite, with a smaller highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap, exhibited higher reactivity and anticancer effects in human ovarian cancer cell line, OVCAR-3. Significantly, the application of nanocomposites to ovarian cancer cells initiated apoptosis, offering valuable insights into the intricate interplay between nanomaterials and cancer biology.

Surface engineered nanohybrids in plasmonic photothermal therapy for cancer: Regulatory and translational challenges

Plasmonic materials as non-invasive and selective treatment strategies are gaining increasing attention in the healthcare sector due to their remarkable optical and electronic properties, where the interface between matter and light becomes enhanced and highly localized. Some attractive applications of plasmonic materials in healthcare include drug delivery to target specific tissues or cells, hence reducing the side effects of the drug and improving their efficacy; enhancing the contrast and resolution in bioimaging; and selectively heating and destroying the cancerous cells while parting the healthy cells. Despite such advancements in photothermal therapy for cancer treatment, some limitations are still challenging. These include poor photothermal conversion efficiency, heat resistance, less accumulation in the tumor microenvironment, poor biosafety of photothermal agents, damage to the surrounding healthy tissues, post-treatment inflammatory responses, etc. Even though the clinical application of photothermal therapy is primarily restricted due to poor tissue penetration of excitation light, enzyme therapy is hindered due to less therapeutic efficacy. Several multimodal strategies, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and immunotherapy were developed to circumvent these side effects associated with plasmonic photothermal agents for effective mild-temperature photothermal therapy. It can be prophesied that the nanohybrid platform could pave the way for developing cutting-edge multifunctional precise nanomedicine via an ecologically sustainable approach towards cancer therapy. In the present review, we have highlighted the significant challenges of photothermal therapy from the laboratory to the clinical setting and their struggle to get approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Recent Advances of Emerging Metal-Containing Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials in Tumor Theranostics

In recent years, metal-containing two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, among various 2D nanomaterials have attracted widespread attention because of their unique physical and chemical properties, especially in the fields of biomedical applications. Firstly, the review provides a brief introduction to two types of metal-containing 2D nanomaterials, based on whether metal species take up the major skeleton of the 2D nanomaterials. After this, the synthetical approaches are summarized, focusing on two strategies similar to other 2D nanomaterials, top-down and bottom-up methods. Then, the performance and evaluation of these 2D nanomaterials when applied to cancer therapy are discussed in detail. The specificity of metal-containing 2D nanomaterials in physics and optics makes them capable of killing cancer cells in a variety of ways, such as photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, sonodynamic therapy, chemodynamic therapy and so on. Besides, the integrated platform of diagnosis and treatment and the clinical translatability through metal-containing 2D nanomaterials is also introduced in this review. In the summary and perspective section, advanced rational design, challenges and promising clinical contributions to cancer therapy of these emerging metal-containing 2D nanomaterials are discussed.

Recent nanotheranostic approaches in cancer research

Humanity is suffering from cancer which has become a root cause of untimely deaths of individuals around the globe in the recent past. Nanotheranostics integrates therapeutics and diagnostics to monitor treatment response and enhance drug efficacy and safety. We hereby propose to discuss all recent cancer imaging and diagnostic tools, the mechanism of targeting tumor cells, and current nanotheranostic platforms available for cancer. This review discusses various nanotheranostic agents and novel molecular imaging tools like MRI, CT, PET, SPEC, and PAT used for cancer diagnostics. Emphasis is given to gold nanoparticles, silica, liposomes, dendrimers, and metal-based agents. We also highlight the mechanism of targeting the tumor cells, and the limitations of different nanotheranostic agents in the field of research for cancer treatment. Due to the complexity in this area, multifunctional and hybrid nanoparticles functionalized with targeted moieties or anti-cancer drugs show the best feature for theranostics that enables them to work on carrying and delivering active materials to the desired area of the requirement for early detection and diagnosis. Non-invasive imaging techniques have a specificity of receptor binding and internalization processes of the nanosystems within the cancer cells. Nanotheranostics may provide the appropriate medicine at the appropriate dose to the appropriate patient at the appropriate time.

Quantitative Study on the Influence of Bromide Ions toward the Reduction Kinetics for Size-Tunable Palladium Nanocubes

During the preparation of nanocrystals, regulating the dosage of key additives in the reaction system and the reaction temperature commonly affects the sizes and morphologies of the products. Despite the fact that bromide ions play a pivotal role in the synthesis of palladium nanocubes (Pd NCs), there is still a lack of quantitative and in-depth research on how the ions affect the reduction kinetics of Pd precursors and further on products. In this work, Pd NCs with different sizes have been prepared under various reaction conditions coupled to a systematic mechanism study. Quantitative measurements demonstrate that the reduction processes could be considered quasi-first-order reactions, and the corresponding kinetic parameters have been obtained. Furthermore, a linear relationship is discovered between k and the average size (d) of Pd NCs. The investigation on the growth patterns of four chosen systems reveals that given reaction conditions lead to certain results with unique growth patterns.

A continuously efficient O2-supplying strategy for long-term modulation of hypoxic tumor microenvironment to enhance long-acting radionuclides internal therapy

Radionuclides internal radiotherapy (RIT) is a clinically powerful method for cancer treatment, but still poses unsatisfactory therapeutic outcomes due to the hypoxic characteristic of tumor microenvironment (TME). Catalase (CAT) or CAT-like nanomaterials can be used to enzymatically decompose TME endogenous H2O2 to boost TME oxygenation and thus alleviate the hypoxic level within tumors, but their effectiveness is still hindered by the short-lasting of hypoxia relief owing to their poor stability or degradability, thereby failing to match the long therapeutic duration of RIT. Herein, we proposed an innovative strategy of using facet-dependent CAT-like Pd-based two-dimensional (2D) nanoplatforms to continuously enhance RIT. Specifically, rationally designed 2D Pd@Au nanosheets (NSs) enable consistent enzymatic conversion of endogenous H2O2 into O2 to overcome hypoxia-induced RIT resistance. Furthermore, partially coated Au layer afford NIR-II responsiveness and moderate photothermal treatment that augmenting their enzymatic functionality. This approach with dual-effect paves the way for reshaping TME and consequently facilitating the brachytherapy ablation of cancer. Our work offers a significant advancement in the integration of catalytic nanomedicine and nuclear medicine, with the overarching goal of amplifying the clinical benefits of RIT-treated patients.

Quantum Dot-based Bio-conjugates as an Emerging Bioimaging Tool for Cancer Theranostic- A Review

Cancer is the most widely studied disorder in humans, but proper treatment has not yet been developed for it. Conventional therapies, like chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery, have been employed. Such therapies target not only cancerous cells but also harm normal cells. Conventional therapy does not result in specific targeting and hence leads to severe side effects. The main objective of this study is to explore the QDs. QDs are used as nanocarriers for diagnosis and treatment at the same time. They are based on the principle of theranostic approach. QDs can be conjugated with antibodies via various methods that result in targeted therapy. This results in their dual function as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Nanotechnology involving such nanocarriers can increase the specificity and reduce the side effects, leaving the normal cells unaffected. This review pays attention to different methods for synthesising QDs. QDs can be obtained using either organic method and synthetic methods. It was found that QDs synthesised naturally are more feasible than the synthetic process. Top or bottom-up approaches have also emerged for the synthesis of QDs. QDs can be conjugated with an antibody via non-covalent and covalent binding. Covalent binding is much more feasible than any other method. Zero-length coupling plays an important role as EDC (1-Ethyl-3-Ethyl dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide is a strong crosslinker and is widely used for conjugating molecules. Antibodies work as surface ligands that lead to antigen- antibody interaction, resulting in site-specific targeting and leaving behind the normal cells unaffected. Cellular uptake of the molecule is done by either passive targeting or active targeting. QDs are tiny nanocrystals that are inorganic in nature and vary in size and range. Based on different sizes, they emit light of specific wavelengths. They have their own luminescent and optical properties that lead to the monitoring, imaging, and transport of the therapeutic moiety to a variety of targets in the body. The surface of the QDs is modified to boost their functioning. They act as a tool for diagnosis, imaging, and delivery of therapeutic moieties. For improved therapeutic effects, nanotechnology leads the cellular uptake of nanoparticles via passive targeting or active targeting. It is a crucial platform that not only leads to imaging and diagnosis but also helps to deliver therapeutic moieties to specific sites. Therefore, this review concludes that there are numerous drawbacks to the current cancer treatment options, which ultimately result in treatment failure. Therefore, nanotechnology that involves such a nanocarrier will serve as a tool for overcoming all limitations of the traditional therapeutic approach. This approach helps in reducing the dose of anticancer agents for effective treatment and hence improving the therapeutic index. QDs can not only diagnose a disease but also deliver drugs to the cancerous site.

Advancement in Biopolymer Assisted Cancer Theranostics

Applications of nanotechnology have increased the importance of research and nanocarriers, which have revolutionized the method of drug delivery to treat several diseases, including cancer, in the past few years. Cancer, one of the world's fatal diseases, has drawn scientists' attention for its multidrug resistance to various chemotherapeutic drugs. To minimize the side effects of chemotherapeutic agents on healthy cells and to develop technological advancement in drug delivery systems, scientists have developed an alternative approach to delivering chemotherapeutic drugs at the targeted site by integrating it inside the nanocarriers like synthetic polymers, nanotubes, micelles, dendrimers, magnetic nanoparticles, quantum dots (QDs), lipid nanoparticles, nano-biopolymeric substances, etc., which has shown promising results in both preclinical and clinical trials of cancer management. Besides that, nanocarriers, especially biopolymeric nanoparticles, have received much attention from researchers due to their cost-effectiveness, biodegradability, treatment efficacy, and ability to target drug delivery by crossing the blood-brain barrier. This review emphasizes the fabrication processes, the therapeutic and theragnostic applications, and the importance of different biopolymeric nanocarriers in targeting cancer both in vitro and in vivo, which conclude with the challenges and opportunities of future exploration using biopolymeric nanocarriers in onco-therapy with improved availability and reduced toxicity.

Preparation and usage of nanomaterials in biomedicine

Nanotechnology is one of the most promising and decisive technologies in the world. Nanomaterials, as the primary research aspect of nanotechnology, are quite different from macroscopic materials because of their unique optical, electrical, magnetic, thermal properties, and more robust mechanical properties, which make them play an essential role in the field of materials science, biomedical field, aerospace field, and environmental energy. Different preparation methods for nanomaterials have various physical and chemical properties and are widely used in different areas. In this review, we focused on the preparation methods, including chemical, physical, and biological methods due to the properties of nanomaterials. We mainly clarified the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of different preparation methods. Then, we focused on the applications of nanomaterials in biomedicine, including biological detection, tumor diagnosis, and disease treatment, which provide a development trend and promising prospects for nanomaterials.

A Piperazine Linked Rhodamine-BODIPY FRET-based Fluorescent Sensor for Highly Selective Pd2+ and Biothiol Detection

A class of rhodamine-based fluorescent sensors for the selective and sensitive detection of Pd2+ metal ions in aqueous media has been developed. A rhodamine-based sensor PMS and a rhodamine-BODIPY Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-pair sensor PRS have been incorporated with a piperazine linker and an O-N-S-N podand ligand for specific recognition of Pd2+ ion. Both probes displayed colorimetric and fluorescent ratiometric changes when exposed to Pd2+ , due to their spirolactam rings opening and restoring rhodamine conjugation. PRS is highly selective to Pd2+ over 22 other metal ions, showing a 0.6-fold ratiometric difference at I600nm /I515nm . Additionally, the lactam ring in Pd2+ coordinated PRS-Pd could be switched back to the closed form in the presence of various thiols, providing a "red-green traffic light" detection mechanism between red and green emission. Furthermore, PRS showed excellent cell viability and was successfully employed to image Pd2+ and the PRS-Pd complex ensemble could interchangeably detect biothiols including glutathione (GSH) in A549 human lung cancer cells.

Crystal Design, Antitumor Activity and Molecular Docking of Novel Palladium(II) and Gold(III) Complexes with a Thiosemicarbazone Ligand

The current research describes the synthesis and characterization of 2-acetylpyridine N(4)-cyclohexyl-thiosemicarbazone ligand (HL) and their two metal complexes, [Au(L)Cl][AuCl₂] (1) and [Pd(L)Cl]·DMF (2). The molecular structures of the compounds were determined by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was employed in the structural elucidation of the new complexes. The complexes showed a square planar geometry to the metal center Au(III) and Pd(II), coordinated with a thiosemicarbazone molecule by the NNS-donor system and a chloride ion. Complex (1) also shows the [AuCl₂]^- counter-ion in the asymmetric unit, and complex (2) has one DMF solvent molecule. These molecules play a key role in the formation of supramolecular structures due to different interactions. Noncovalent interactions were investigated through the 3D Hirshfeld surface by the d_norm function and the 2D fingerprint plots. The biological activity of the compounds was evaluated in vitro against the human glioma U251 cells. The cytotoxicity results revealed great antitumor activity in complex (1) compared with complex (2) and the free ligand. Molecular docking simulations were used to predict interactions and properties with selected proteins and DNA of the synthesized compounds.

New opportunities for RGD-engineered metal nanoparticles in cancer

The advent of nanotechnology has opened new possibilities for bioimaging. Metal nanoparticles (such as gold, silver, iron, copper, etc.) hold tremendous potential and offer enormous opportunities for imaging and diagnostics due to their broad optical characteristics, ease of manufacturing technique, and simple surface modification. The arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) peptide is a three-amino acid sequence that seems to have a considerably greater ability to adhere to integrin adhesion molecules that exclusively express on tumour cells. RGD peptides act as the efficient tailoring ligand with a variety of benefits including non-toxicity, greater precision, rapid clearance, etc. This review focuses on the possibility of non-invasive cancer imaging using metal nanoparticles with RGD assistance.

Recent Advances in Nanomedicine Development for Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and it is also a risk factor for neurodegeneration. However, there has not been perceptible progress in treating acute TBI over the last few years, mainly due to the inability of therapeutic drugs to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), failing to exert significant pharmacological effects on the brain parenchyma. Recently, nanomedicines are emerging as a powerful tool for the treatment of TBI where nanoscale materials (also called nanomaterials) are employed to deliver therapeutic agents. The advantages of using nanomaterials as a drug carrier include their high solubility and stability, high carrier capacity, site-specific, improved pharmacokinetics, and biodistribution. Keeping these points in consideration, this article reviews the pathophysiology, current treatment options, and emerging nanomedicine strategies for the treatment of TBI. The review will help readers to gain insight into the state-of-the-art of nanomedicine as a new tool for the treatment of TBI.

Plasmonic nanotechnology for photothermal applications - an evaluation

The application of plasmonic nanoparticles is motivated by the phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance. Owing to the tunability of optothermal properties and enhanced stability, these nanostructures show a wide range of applications in optical sensors, steam generation, water desalination, thermal energy storage, and biomedical applications such as photothermal (PT) therapy. The PT effect, that is, the conversion of absorbed light to heat by these particles, has led to thriving research regarding the utilization of plasmonic nanoparticles for a myriad of applications. The design of conventional nanomaterials for PT conversion has focussed predominantly on the manipulation of photon absorption through bandgap engineering, doping, incorporation, and modification of suitable matrix materials. Plasmonic nanomaterials offer an alternative and attractive approach in this regard, through the flexibility in the excitation of surface plasmons. Specific advantages are the considerable improved bandwidth of the absorption, a higher efficiency of photon absorption, facile tuning, as well as flexibility in the synthesis of plasmonic nanomaterials. This review of plasmonic PT (PPT) research begins with a theoretical discussion on the plasmonic properties of nanoparticles by means of the quasi-static approximation, Mie theory, Gans theory, generic simulations on common plasmonic material morphologies, and the evaluation processes of PT performance. Further, a variety of nanomaterials and material classes that have potential for PPT conversion are elucidated, such as plasmonic metals, bimetals, and metal-metal oxide nanocomposites. A detailed investigation of the essential, but often ignored, concept of thermal, chemical, and aggregation stability of nanoparticles is another part of this review. The challenges that remain, as well as prospective directions and chemistries, regarding nanomaterials for PT conversion are pondered on in the final section of the article, taking into account the specific requirements from different applications.

Palladium nanoparticle based smart hydrogels for NIR light-triggered photothermal/photodynamic therapy and drug release with wound healing capability

Tumor recurrence and wound repair are two major challenges following cancer surgical resection that can be addressed through precision nanomedicine. Herein, palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) with photothermal and photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) capacity were successfully synthesized. The Pd NPs were loaded with chemotherapeutic doxorubicin (DOX) to form hydrogels (Pd/DOX@hydrogel) as a smart anti-tumor platform. The hydrogels were composed of clinically approved agarose and chitosan, with excellent biocompatibility and wound healing ability. Pd/DOX@hydrogel can be used for both PTT and PDT with a synergistic effect to kill tumor cells. Additionally, the photothermal effect of Pd/DOX@hydrogel allowed the photo-triggered drug release of DOX. Therefore, Pd/DOX@hydrogel can be used for near-infrared (NIR)-triggered PTT and PDT as well as for photo-induced chemotherapy, efficiently inhibiting tumor growth. Furthermore, Pd/DOX@hydrogel can be used as a temporary biomimetic skin to block the invasion of foreign harmful substances, promote angiogenesis, and accelerate wound repair and new skin formation. Thus, the as-prepared smart Pd/DOX@hydrogel is expected to provide a feasible therapeutic solution following tumor resection.

Pd-Based Hybrid Nanoparticles As Multimodal Theranostic Nanomedicine

A nanodelivery system based on palladium nanoparticles (PdNP) and cisplatin (CisPt) was developed by physisorption of the drug onto the PdNP synthesized via a green redox process, using d-glucose and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as reducing and stabilizing/capping agents, respectively. UV-vis analysis and H₂-evolution measurements were carried out to prove the nanoparticles' capability to act as bimodal theranostic nanomedicine, i.e., having both plasmonic and photocatalytic properties. XPS, XRD, and TEM allowed light to be shed on the chemical composition and morphology of the PdNP. The analysis of the UV-visible spectra evidenced plasmonic peak changes for the hybrid nanoparticle-drug assembly (Pd@CisPt), which pointed to a significant interaction of CisPt with the NP surface. The drug loading was quantitatively estimated by ICP-OES measurements, while DLS and AFM confirmed the strong association of the drug with the nanoparticle surface. The test of SOD-like activity in a cell-free environment proved the maintenance of the antioxidant capability of PdNP also in the Pd@CisPt systems. Finally, Pd@CisPt tested in prostate cancer cells (PC-3 line) unveiled the antitumoral action of the developed nanomedicine, related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, with a condition of protein misfolding/unfolding and DNA damage, as evidenced by cytotoxicity and MitoSOX assays, as well as Raman microspectroscopy, respectively. Cell imaging by confocal microscopy evidenced cellular uptake of the nanoparticles, as well as dynamic processes of copper ion accumulation at the level of subcellular compartments. Finally, cell migration studies upon treatment with Pd@CisPt evidenced a tunable response between the inhibitory effect of CisPt and the enhanced rate of cell migration for the metal NP alone, which pointed out the promising potential of the developed theranostic nanomedicine in tissue regeneration.

The sound of drug delivery: Optoacoustic imaging in pharmacology

Optoacoustic (photoacoustic) imaging offers unique opportunities for visualizing biological function in vivo by achieving high-resolution images of optical contrast much deeper than any other optical technique. The method detects ultrasound waves that are generated inside tissue by thermo-elastic expansion, i.e., the conversion of light absorption by tissue structures to ultrasound when the tissue is illuminated by the light of varying intensity. Listening instead of looking to light offers the major advantage of image formation with a resolution that obeys ultrasonic diffraction and not photon diffusion laws. While the technique has been widely used to explore contrast from endogenous photo-absorbing molecules, such as hemoglobin or melanin, the use of exogenous agents can extend applications to a larger range of biological and possible clinical applications, such as image-guided surgery, disease monitoring, and the evaluation of drug delivery, biodistribution, and kinetics. This review summarizes recent developments in optoacoustic agents, and highlights new functions visualized and potent pharmacology applications enabled with the use of external contrast agents.

Chitosan Nanoparticles: A Versatile Platform for Biomedical Applications

Chitosan is a biodegradable and biocompatible natural polymer that has been extensively explored in recent decades. The Food and Drug Administration has approved chitosan for wound treatment and nutritional use. Furthermore, chitosan has paved the way for advancements in different biomedical applications including as a nanocarrier and tissue-engineering scaffold. Its antibacterial, antioxidant, and haemostatic properties make it an excellent option for wound dressings. Because of its hydrophilic nature, chitosan is an ideal starting material for biocompatible and biodegradable hydrogels. To suit specific application demands, chitosan can be combined with fillers, such as hydroxyapatite, to modify the mechanical characteristics of pH-sensitive hydrogels. Furthermore, the cationic characteristics of chitosan have made it a popular choice for gene delivery and cancer therapy. Thus, the use of chitosan nanoparticles in developing novel drug delivery systems has received special attention. This review aims to provide an overview of chitosan-based nanoparticles, focusing on their versatile properties and different applications in biomedical sciences and engineering.

Rhodium-Tellurium Nanorod Synthesis Using Galvanic Replacement-Polyol Regrowth for Thermo-Dynamic Dual-Modal Cancer Phototherapy

Rh is a noble metal introduced in bioapplications, including diagnosis and therapy, in addition to its consolidated utilization in organic catalysis and electrocatalysis. Herein, we designed the synthesis of highly crystalline Rh nanocrystal-decorated Rh-Te nanorods (RhTeNRs) through galvanic replacement of sacrificial Te nanorod (TeNR) templates and subsequent polyol regrowth. The obtained RhTeNRs showed excellent colloidal stability and efficient heat dissipation and photocatalytic activity under various laser irradiation wavelengths. Based on the confirmed biocompatibility, RhTeNRs were introduced into in vitro and in vivo cancer phototherapies. The results confirmed the selective physical death of cancer cells in the local area through laser irradiation. While chemotherapy does not guarantee successful treatment due to side effects and resistance, phototherapy using heat and reactive oxygen species generation of RhTeNRs induces physical death.

Tensile-Strained Palladium Nanosheets for Synthetic Catalytic Therapy and Phototherapy

Palladium nanosheets (Pd NSs) are well-investigated photothermal therapy agents, but their catalytic potential for tumor therapy has been underexplored owing to the inactive dominant (111) facets. Herein, lattice tensile strain is introduced by surface reconstruction to activate the inert surface, endowing the strained Pd NSs (SPd NSs) with photodynamic, catalase-like, and peroxidase-like properties. Tensile strain promoting the photodynamic and enzyme-like activities is revealed by density functional theory calculations. Compared with Pd NSs, SPd NSs exhibit lower photothermal effect, but approximately five times higher tumor inhibition rate. This work calls for further study to activate nanomaterials by strain engineering and surface reconstruction for catalytic therapy of tumors.

Recent advances in nanoparticle-based photothermal therapy for breast cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women that is associated with high mortality. Conventional treatments including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, which are not effective enough and have disadvantages such as toxicity and damage to healthy cells. Photothermal therapy (PTT) of cancer cells has been took great attention by researchers in recent years due to the use of light radiation and heat generation at the tumor site, which thermal ablation is considered a minimally invasive method for the treatment of breast cancer. Nanotechnology has opened up a new perspective in the treatment of breast cancer using PTT method. Through NIR light absorption, researchers applied various nanostructures because of their specific nature of penetrating and targeting tumor tissue, increasing the effectiveness of PTT, and combining it with other treatments. If PTT is used with common cancer treatments, it can dramatically increase the effectiveness of treatment and reduce the side effects of other methods. PTT performance can also be improved by hybridizing at least two different nanomaterials. Nanoparticles that intensely absorb light and increase the efficiency of converting light into heat can specifically kill tumors through hyperthermia of cancer cells. One of the main reasons that have increased the efficiency of nanoparticles in PTT is their permeability and durability effect and they can accumulate in tumor tissue. Targeted PTT can be provided by incorporating specific ligands to target receptors expressed on the surface of cancer cells on nanoparticles. These nanoparticles can specifically target cancer cells by maintaining the surface area and increasing penetration. In this study, we briefly introduce the performance of light therapy, application of metal nanoparticles, polymer nanoparticles, carbon nanoparticles, and hybrid nanoparticles for use in PTT of breast cancer.

Research Progress of Photothermal Nanomaterials in Multimodal Tumor Therapy

The aggressive growth of cancer cells brings extreme challenges to cancer therapy while triggering the exploration of the application of multimodal therapy methods. Multimodal tumor therapy based on photothermal nanomaterials is a new technology to realize tumor cell thermal ablation through near-infrared light irradiation with a specific wavelength, which has the advantages of high efficiency, less adverse reactions, and effective inhibition of tumor metastasis compared with traditional treatment methods such as surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Photothermal nanomaterials have gained increasing interest due to their potential applications, remarkable properties, and advantages for tumor therapy. In this review, recent advances and the common applications of photothermal nanomaterials in multimodal tumor therapy are summarized, with a focus on the different types of photothermal nanomaterials and their application in multimodal tumor therapy. Moreover, the challenges and future applications have also been speculated.

A "Dual-Source, Dual-Activation" Strategy for an NIR-II Window Theranostic Nanosystem Enabling Optimal Photothermal-Ion Combination Therapy

The activatable imaging technique in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) utilizes the stimulation of cancer-associated biomarkers for specific imaging to guide precise NIR-II photothermal therapy. However, most activatable nanoprobes with single-source stimulation are insufficient in providing comprehensive information regarding the tumor, severely restricting the therapeutic optimization, especially in NIR-II photothermal therapy (PTT)-based combination therapy. Herein, a "dual-source, dual-activation" strategy-based multifunctional nanosystem, PPAC, is reported as a promising tool for activatable NIR-II fluorescence (FL)/ratiometric photoacoustic (PA) imaging-guided "localization-timing" photothermal-ion therapy (PTIT). A fibroblast activation protein (FAP)-responsive peptide to modify the surface of Pd nanosheets with excellent NIR-II absorption ability can efficiently cross-link BSA-CQ4T to realize NIR-II FL quenching, followed by the loading of Ag to construct the PPAC. Triggered by the specific cleavage with FAP on the perivascular cancer-associated fibroblasts (first source), the PPAC can correspondingly release BSA-CQ4T for rapid fluorescence recovery. The nanosystems are subsequently taken up by tumor cells, where the overexpressed H₂ O₂ (second source) promotes the oxidation of Ag shell to Ag⁺ , and further leads the real-time ratiometric PA signals (Ag-PA660/Pd-PA1050) that can monitor the Ag⁺ ions-related production efficiency and therapeutic performance. Intelligent integration of dual-modality imaging information can comprehensively provide the right time-point and site-specificity for selective NIR-II PTT.

Minimally invasive nanomedicine: nanotechnology in photo-/ultrasound-/radiation-/magnetism-mediated therapy and imaging

Traditional treatments such as chemotherapy and surgery usually cause severe side effects and excruciating pain. The emergence of nanomedicines and minimally invasive therapies (MITs) has brought hope to patients with malignant diseases. Especially, minimally invasive nanomedicines (MINs), which combine the advantages of nanomedicines and MITs, can effectively target pathological cells/tissues/organs to improve the bioavailability of drugs, minimize side effects and achieve painless treatment with a small incision or no incision, thereby acquiring good therapeutic effects. In this review, we provide a comprehensive review of the research status and challenges of MINs, which generally refers to the medical applications of nanotechnology in photo-/ultrasound-/radiation-/magnetism-mediated therapy and imaging. Additionally, we also discuss their combined application in various fields including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, tissue engineering, neuro-functional diseases, and infectious diseases. The prospects, and potential bench-to-bedside translation of MINs are also presented in this review. We expect that this review can inspire the broad interest for a wide range of readers working in the fields of interdisciplinary subjects including (but not limited to) chemistry, nanomedicine, bioengineering, nanotechnology, materials science, pharmacology, and biomedicine.

Docetaxel-Loaded Novel Nano-Platform for Synergistic Therapy of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Nowadays, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is threatening the health of all mankind. Although many progresses on treatment of lung cancer have been achieved in the past few decades, the current treatment methods are still traditional surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, which had poor selectivity and side effects. Lower-toxicity and more efficient treatments are in sore need. In this paper, a smart nanodelivery platform based on photothermal therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy was constructed. The nanoparticles are composed of novel photothermal agents, Mn-modified phthalocyanine derivative (Mn^IIIPC), docetaxel (DTX), and an effective targeting molecule, hyaluronic acid. The nanoplatform could release Mn²⁺ from Mn^IIIPC@DTX@PLGA@Mn²⁺@HA(MDPMH) and probably activate tumor immunity through cGAS-STING and chemotherapy, respectively. Furthermore, DTX could be released in the process for removal of tumor cells. The “one-for-all” nanomaterial may shed some light on treating NSCLC in multiple methods.

Folic acid conjugated chitosan encapsulated palladium nanoclusters for NIR triggered photothermal breast cancer treatment

This study developed folic acid (FA) conjugated chitosan (CS) encapsulated rutin (R) synthesized palladium nanoclusters (Pd NCs) for NIR triggered and folate receptor (FR) targeted triple-negative breast cancer (MDA-MB 231 cells) treatment. R-Pd NCs exhibited flower-shaped particles with an average size of <100 nm. FA-CS encapsulation concealed the flower shape of R-Pd NCs with a positive charge. The XRD spectrum confirmed the cubic crystalline structure of Pd. The FA conjugation on CS improved the cellular uptake of R-Pd NCs in MDA-MB 231 cells was confirmed by TEM. FA-CS-R-Pd NCs (+NIR) treatment was considerably inhibited the MDA-MB 231 cells proliferation evidenced by cell viability, fluorescent staining, and flow cytometry analysis. Further, in vitro hemolysis assay and in Ovo model confirmed the non-toxic nature of FA-CS-R-Pd-NCs with or without NIR radiation. Hence, this study concluded that FA-CS-R-Pd NCs can be applied for the treatment of drug-resistant breast cancer.

Heterometallic nanomaterials: Activity modulation, sensing, imaging and therapy

Heterometallic nanomaterials (HMNMs) display superior physicochemical properties and stability to monometallic counterparts, accompanied by wider applications in the fields of catalysis, sensing, imaging, and therapy due to synergistic effects between multi-metals in HMNMs. So far, most reviews have mainly concentrated on introduction of their preparation approaches, morphology control and applications in catalysis, assay of heavy metal ions, and antimicrobial activity. Therefore, it is very important to summarize the latest investigations of activity modulation of HMNMs and their recent applications in sensing, imaging and therapy. Taking the above into consideration, we briefly underline appealing chemical/physical properties of HMNMs chiefly tailored through the sizes, shapes, compositions, structures and surface modification. Then, we particularly emphasize their widespread applications in sensing of targets (e.g. metal ions, small molecules, proteins, nucleic acids, and cancer cells), imaging (frequently involving photoluminescence, fluorescence, Raman, electrochemiluminescence, magnetic resonance, X-ray computed tomography, photoacoustic imaging, etc.), and therapy (e.g. radiotherapy, chemotherapy, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and chemodynamic therapy). Finally, we present an outlook on their forthcoming directions. This timely review would be of great significance for attracting researchers from different disciplines in developing novel HMNMs.

Synthesis of manganese-oxide and palladium nanoparticles co-decorated polypyrrole/graphene oxide (MnO2@Pd@PPy/GO) nanocomposites for anti-cancer treatment

Design and fabrication of novel multifunctional nanomaterials as novel “theranostic nanoagents”with high efficiency and low side effects is important for cancer treatment. Herein, we synthesized manganese-oxide and palladium nanoparticle-co-decorated polypyrrole/graphene oxide (MnO₂@Pd@PPy/GO) nanocomposites, which could be used as a novel “theranostic nanoagent” for cancer treatment. Various spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations of the synthesized MnO₂@Pd@PPy/GO nanocomposites suggest that the nanocomposites are assembled sequentially by graphene oxide, polypyrrole, palladium nanoparticles and manganese-oxide nanoplates. Further research revealed that the nanocomposites had excellent photothermal conversion performance (reached near 50 °C after 10 min of irradiation), pH responsive enzymatic-like catalytic activity and enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performance (r₁ = 7.74 mM⁻¹ s⁻¹ at pH 5.0 and glutathione (GSH)). Cell experiments also testified that combined cancer treatment (the viability of cancer cells is 30%) with photothermal therapy (PTT, the viability of cancer cells is 91% only with irradiation) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT, the viability of cancer cells is 74.7% only with nanocomposites) guided by MRI was achieved when the as-prepared nanocomposites were employed as theranostic nanoagents. This work could provide some new ideas for the controllable synthesis and application of multicomponent nanomaterials.

Molecular Hydrogen as Medicine: An Assessment of Administration Methods

Since the late 18th century, molecular hydrogen (H2) has been shown to be well tolerated, firstly in animals, and then in humans. However, although research into the beneficial effects of molecular hydrogen in both plant and mammalian physiology is gaining momentum, the idea of utilising this electrochemically neutral and non-polar diatomic compound for the benefit of health has yet to be widely accepted by regulatory bodies worldwide. Due to the precise mechanisms of H2 activity being as yet undefined, the lack of primary target identification, coupled with difficulties regarding administration methods (e.g., dosage and dosage frequencies, long-term effects of treatment, and the patient’s innate antioxidant profile), there is a requirement for H2 research to evidence how it can reasonably and most effectively be incorporated into medical practice. This review collates and assesses the current information regarding the many routes of molecular hydrogen administration in animals and humans, whilst evaluating how targeted delivery methods could be integrated into a modern healthcare system.

Feasibility of Monitoring Tumor Response by Tracking Nanoparticle-Labelled T Cells Using X-ray Fluorescence Imaging-A Numerical Study

Immunotherapy has been a breakthrough in cancer treatment, yet only a subgroup of patients responds to these novel drugs. Parameters such as cytotoxic T-cell infiltration into the tumor have been proposed for the early evaluation and prediction of therapeutic response, demanded for non-invasive, sensitive and longitudinal imaging. We have evaluated the feasibility of X-ray fluorescence imaging (XFI) to track immune cells and thus monitor the immune response. For that, we have performed Monte Carlo simulations using a mouse voxel model. Spherical targets, enriched with gold or palladium fluorescence agents, were positioned within the model and imaged using a monochromatic photon beam of 53 or 85 keV. Based on our simulation results, XFI may detect as few as 730 to 2400 T cells labelled with 195 pg gold each when imaging subcutaneous tumors in mice, with a spatial resolution of 1 mm. However, the detection threshold is influenced by the depth of the tumor as surrounding tissue increases scattering and absorption, especially when utilizing palladium imaging agents with low-energy characteristic fluorescence photons. Further evaluation and conduction of in vivo animal experiments will be required to validate and advance these promising results.

Evaluation of Antiproliferative Palladium(II) Complexes of Synthetic Bisdemethoxycurcumin towards In Vitro Cytotoxicity and Molecular Docking on DNA Sequence

Metallodrugs form a large family of therapeutic agents against cancer, among which is cisplatin, a paradigmatic member. Therapeutic resistance and undesired side effects to Pt(II) related drugs, prompts research on different metal-ligand combinations with potentially enhanced biological activity. We present the synthesis and biological tests of novel palladium(II) complexes containing bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC) 1 and 2. Complexes were fully characterized and their structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. Their biological activity was assessed for several selected human tumor cell lines: Jurkat (human leukaemic T-cell lymphoma), HCT-116 (human colorectal carcinoma), HeLa (human cervix epitheloid carcinoma), MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma), MDA-MB-231 (human mammary gland adenocarcinoma), A549 (human alveolar adenocarcinoma), Caco-2 (human colorectal carcinoma), and for non-cancerous 3T3 cells (murine fibroblasts). The cytotoxicity of 1 is comparable to that of cisplatin, and superior to that of 2 in all cell lines. It is a correlation between IC50 values of 1 and 2 in the eight studied cell types, promising a potential use as anti-proliferative drugs. Moreover, for Jurkat cell line, complexes 1 and 2, show an enhanced activity. DFT and docking calculations on the NF-κB protein, Human Serum Albumin (HSA), and DNA were performed for 1 and 2 to correlate with their biological activities.

Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters: Towards an Optimal Biocompatible System from a Theoretical-Experimental Strategy

Potential biomedical applications of gold nanoparticles have increasingly been reported with great promise for diagnosis and therapy of several diseases. However, for such a versatile nanomaterial, the advantages and potential health risks need to be addressed carefully, as the available information about their toxicity is limited and inconsistent. Atomically precise gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have emerged to overcome this challenge due to their unique features, such as superior stability, excellent biocompatibility, and efficient renal clearance. Remarkably, the elucidation of their structural and physicochemical properties provided by theory-experiment investigations offers exciting opportunities for site-specific biofunctionalization of the nanoparticle surface, which remains a significant concern for most of the materials in the biomedical field. This concept highlights the advantages conferred by atomically precise AuNCs for biomedical applications and the powerful strategy combining computational and experimental studies towards finding an optimal biocompatible AuNCs-based nanosystem.

Low-Temperature Photothermal Therapy: Strategies and Applications

Although photothermal therapy (PTT) with the assistance of nanotechnology has been considered as an indispensable strategy in the biomedical field, it still encounters some severe problems that need to be solved. Excessive heat can induce treated cells to develop thermal resistance, and thus, the efficacy of PTT may be dramatically decreased. In the meantime, the uncontrollable diffusion of heat can pose a threat to the surrounding healthy tissues. Recently, low-temperature PTT (also known as mild PTT or mild-temperature PTT) has demonstrated its remarkable capacity of conquering these obstacles and has shown excellent performance in bacterial elimination, wound healing, and cancer treatments. Herein, we summarize the recently proposed strategies for achieving low-temperature PTT based on nanomaterials and introduce the synthesis, characteristics, and applications of these nanoplatforms. Additionally, the combination of PTT and other therapeutic modalities for defeating cancers and the synergistic cancer therapeutic effect of the combined treatments are discussed. Finally, the current limitations and future directions are proposed for inspiring more researchers to make contributions to promoting low-temperature PTT toward more successful preclinical and clinical disease treatments.

Bioactive metal-containing nanomaterials for ferroptotic cancer therapy

The clinical performance of the current cancer therapies is still far from satisfactory. The emerging ferroptosis-driven therapy strategies reignite the hope of chemotherapy in tumor treatment due to their incredible tumor suppression. Among ferroptosis-based cancer therapies, metal elements have attracted remarkable attention due to their inherent physicochemical properties in inducing ferroptosis of tumor cells quickly and strongly without complex cellular signal transduction. Although the discovery and applications of ferroptosis for tumor treatment have been discussed in many reviews, the unique advantages of metal-containing nanomaterials interfering ferroptotic cancer therapies (MIFCT) have seldom been mentioned. Here, we outline the latest advances of MIFCT comprehensively. Firstly, the functions of different kinds of metal elements or their ions are introduced to illustrate their advantages in MIFCT. Secondly, the emerging metal-containing nanomaterials that are designed to achieve ferroptosis-driven therapy are overviewed, including their ability to boost the Fenton or Fenton-like reaction for reactive oxygen species generation, act as hydrogen peroxide self-providers, damage the reducing system, and disturb cellular communication. Moreover, metal-containing nanomaterials with external energy conversion features for MIFCT are discussed. Finally, the future expectations and challenges of MIFCT for clinical cancer therapy are spotlighted.

Recent Advances in Amino-Based Molecules Assisted Control of Noble-Metal Electrocatalysts

Morphology-control synthesis is an effective means to tailor surface structure of noble-metal nanocrystals, which offers a sensitive knob for tuning their electrocatalytic properties. The functional molecules are often indispensable in the morphology-control synthesis through preferential adsorption on specific crystal facets, or controlling certain crystal growth directions. In this review, the recent progress in morphology-control synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals assisted by amino-based functional molecules for electrocatalytic applications are focused on. Although a mass of noble-metal nanocrystals with different morphologies have been reported, few review studies have been published related to amino-based molecules assisted control strategy. A full understanding for the key roles of amino-based molecules in the morphology-control synthesis is still necessary. As a result, the explicit roles and mechanisms of various types of amino-based molecules, including amino-based small molecules and amino-based polymers, in morphology-control of noble-metal nanocrystals are summarized and discussed in detail. Also presented in this progress are unique electrocatalytic properties of various shaped noble-metal nanocrystals. Particularly, the optimization of electrocatalytic selectivity induced by specific amino-based functional molecules (e.g., polyallylamine and polyethyleneimine) is highlighted. At the end, some critical prospects, and challenges in terms of amino-based molecules-controlled synthesis and electrocatalytic applications are proposed.

3D CoPt nanostructures hybridized with iridium complexes for multimodal imaging and combined photothermal-chemotherapy

Combined photothermal-chemotherapy has shown great potential in improving the efficiency of tumor treatment. In this article, we have designed a new type of nanocomposite Ir-CoPt-PVP composed of cobalt/platinum alloy nanoparticles (CoPt) and iridium(III) complex (Ir) for combined photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy. The obtained CoPt was synthesized by a simple solvothermal method and modified by polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), which exhibited excellent photothermal efficiency and stability, and can also be a bimodal bioimaging contrast agent in photothermal imaging (PTI) and photoacoustic imaging (PAI). Furthermore, the combination therapy has shown obvious tumor cell-growth inhibition in vitro. Overall, the results revealed the great potential of Ir-CoPt-PVP nanocomposites in improving therapeutic efficiency by photothermal-chemotherapy and photothermal/photoacoustic imaging.
