Antimicrobial activities of indole

How different are marine microbial natural products compared to their terrestrial counterparts?

Covering: 1877 to 2020A key challenge in natural products research is the selection of biodiversity to yield novel chemistry. Recently, marine microorganisms have become a preferred source. But how novel are marine microorganism natural products compared to those reported from terrestrial microbes? Cluster analysis of chemical fingerprints and molecular scaffold analysis of 55 817 compounds reported from marine and terrestrial microorganisms, and marine macro-organisms showed that 76.7% of the compounds isolated from marine microorganisms are closely related to compounds isolated from terrestrial microorganisms. Only 14.3% of marine microorganism natural products are unique when marine macro-organism natural products are also considered. Studies targeting marine specific and understudied microbial phyla result in a higher likelihood of finding marine specific compounds, whereas the depth and geographic location of microorganism collection have little influence. We recommend marine targeted strain isolation, incorporating early use of genomic sequencing to guide strain selection, innovation in culture media and cultivation techniques and the application of cheminformatics tools to focus on unique natural product diversity, rather than the dereplication of known compounds.

Phenylazoindole dyes--part I: the syntheses, characterizations, crystal structures, quantum chemical calculations and antimicrobial properties

In this study, the synthesis of four new phenylazo indole dyes (dye 1-4) were carried out by diazotization of 4-aminoacetophenone and coupling with various 2- and 1,2-disubstituted indole derivatives. The dyes were characterized by UV-vis, FT-IR, (1)H NMR, HRMS and X-ray single crystal diffraction methods. Azo-hydrazone tautomeric bahavior of the dyes in different solvents (DMSO, methanol, acetic acid and chloroform) was investigated by using (1)H NMR and UV-vis results. The experimental results were compared with the corresponding calculated values. The results of experimental data and theoretical calculations showed that the azo tautomer is more stable than hydrazone tautomer. In addition to this, the antimicrobial activity of the dyes was also evaluated.

Toxicological effect of indole and its azo dye derivatives on some microorganisms under aerobic conditions

Azo dyes are ubiquitous commercial chemicals that present unique environmental problems. The azo dyes in particular can undergo natural anaerobic degradation to potentially carcinogenic amines. They pose a major problem for water-treatment plants downstream. One strategy to remidate polluted surface contaminants is to make use of the degradative capacity of bacteria rather than using destructive chemical reactions. Therefore, pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms namely; Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterium, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been chosen and the toxicological effect of indole and its azo dye methyl derivatives on these microorganisms was studied under aerobic conditions. While these compounds have showed remarkable activity against B. megaterium, B. subtilis, B. thuringiensis and S. aureus, they did not exhibit any activity against P. vulgaris. However, indole acted as an inhibitor on all of these compounds specially the Gram negative bacterium P. aeruginosa.

Antifungal effects of new heterocyclic compounds, 6H-pyrimido[2,1-a]isoindole derivatives

Minimal inhibitory concentrations for 10 new condensed isoindole derivatives were established by the agar diffusion method. Benzo[b]-6H-pyrimido[2,1-a]isoindole-4-one exhibited a broad antifungal effect; the observed MIC (mg/L) were 7 (K. lactis), 8 (C. pseudotropicalis), 17 (W. fluorescens), 22 (E. magnusii), 31 (P. membranaefaciens), 32 (S. alluvius) and 32 (S. cerevisiae). The compound also inhibited the growth of B. subtilis (MIC 9 mg/L). No effect on the growth of E. coli was found.
