Abstract
Our study aimed to enhance understanding of nasal polyp pathophysiology by reviewing the data for variations of NLR values between patients with nasal polyp and healthy controls. We searched Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, and Scopus up to 2 April 2023. The search strategy was not limited to any specific language. Twelve studies were included in our study. Of them, ten studies, involving 898 nasal polyp patients and 590 control patients, were included in the meta-analysis. The NLR levels in nasal polyp patients were statistically greater than in the control group (SMD = 0.56; 95%CI 0.04-1.08, P = 0.036). Subgroup analysis based on study design yielded that patients with nasal polyp exhibited significantly higher NLR levels than healthy controls in retrospective studies (SMD = 0.83; 95%CI 0.30-1.35, P = 0.002) but not in prospective studies (SMD = 0.10; 95%CI = -1.03 to 1.23, P = 0.85). Also, we found that the NLR levels in nasal polyp patients were significantly higher than healthy controls in high-quality studies (SMD = 1.00; 95%CI 0.38-1.62, P = 0.002) but not in low-quality studies (SMD = 0.11; 95%CI = -0.69 to 0.91, P = 0.79). A total of 312 patients with recurrence and 550 patients without recurrence were included in the study. The combined results revealed that NLR levels in nasal polyp recurrence patients were significantly higher than those of the nasal polyp without recurrence group (SMD = 0.06, 95% CI 0.39-0.81, P = 0.000). These results showed the relationship between the NLR in nasal polyps and can help medical doctors to predict the recurrence of the disease in such patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) levels between women with post-menopausal osteopenia or osteoporosis to those with normal bone mineral density (BMD). METHODS We used Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus to conduct a systematic search for relevant publications published before June 19, 2022, only in English language. We reported standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Because a significant level of heterogeneity was found, we used the random-effects model to calculate pooled effects. We used the Newcastle-Ottawa scale for quality assessment. RESULTS Overall, eight articles were included in the analysis. Post-menopausal women with osteoporosis had elevated levels of NLR compared to those without osteoporosis (SMD = 1.03, 95% CI = 0.18 to 1.88, p = 0.017, I2 = 98%). In addition, there was no difference between post-menopausal women with osteopenia and those without osteopenia in neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) levels (SMD = 0.58, 95% CI=-0.08 to 1.25, p = 0.085, I2 = 96.8%). However, there was no difference between post-menopausal women with osteoporosis and those with osteopenia in NLR levels (SMD = 0.75, 95% CI=-0.01 to 1.51, p = 0.05, I2 = 97.5%, random-effect model). CONCLUSION The results of this study point to NLR as a potential biomarker that may be easily introduced into clinical settings to help predict and prevent post-menopausal osteoporosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dupilumab is a monoclonal antibody against interleukin 4 receptor alpha and has proven to be clinically effective in treating patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). However, a certain number of patients are non- or partial responders. This study aims to investigate the relevance of inflammatory markers with regard to therapy response to dupilumab in CRSwNP patients. METHODS All patients with CRSwNP treated with dupilumab at a tertiary healthcare center with available pretreatment inflammatory markers were included. The values of pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were associated with the outcome. Patients were stratified according to the respective median value (> median was considered high). The binary logistic regression was performed with regard to total treatment response (post-treatment total nasal polyp score (NPS) 0). RESULTS A total of 65 CRSwNP patients with available pretreatment peripheral blood values were included in the study. The mean pre- and post-treatment total NPS values were 4.3 ± 1.9 and 1.2 ± 1.6, respectively. High PLR (> 131.2) was independently associated with a 3.9-fold higher probability of reaching the NPS value of 0 in the multivariable analysis. On the other hand, High NLR (> 1.9) did not significantly associate with the outcome. CONCLUSIONS The current study provides insights into the potential positive predictive value of the high PLR (> 131.2) in CRSwNP patients regarding treatment with dupilumab. There is a need for further prospective studies for validation of these results, especially in cohorts of patients with severe CRSwNP.

Abstract
There has been significant progress in the study of extracellular vesicles (EVs) since the 2017 American Gastroenterological Association-sponsored Freston Conference "Extracellular Vesicles: Biology, Translation and Clinical Application in GI Disorders." The burgeoning interest in this field stems from the increasing recognition that EVs represent an understudied form of cell-to-cell communication and contain cargo replete with biomarkers and therapeutic targets. This short review will highlight recent advances in the field, with an emphasis on colorectal cancer. After a brief introduction to secreted particles, we will describe how our laboratory became interested in EVs, which led to refined methods of isolation and identification of 2 secreted nanoparticles. We will then summarize the cargo found in small EVs released from colorectal cancer cells and other cells in the tumor microenvironment, as well as those found in the circulation of patients with colorectal cancer. Finally, we will consider the continuing challenges and future opportunities in this rapidly evolving field.

Abstract
To evaluate Neutrophil Lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a predictor of disease severity in Nasal Polyposis and Allergic Fungal Rhinosinusitis (AFRS). This was a prospective non-randomized interventional study. Disease severity was graded based on endoscopic and CT scoring. Patients were given pre-operative oral steroids for two weeks and taken up for surgery. The pre-treatment neutrophil lymphocyte ratios were calculated from the differential leucocyte counts and compared with the disease severity and post-operative values. In the interventional arms, the disease severity correlated with the NLR. The mean pre-treatment NLR showed a statistically significant change after the intervention at eight weeks. The NLR normalized in patients with nasal polyposis and continued to be higher in patients with AFRS. NLR correlated to the disease severity and showed a linear correlation with the extent of the disease. NLR could be a potential cost-effective marker for disease severity and prognostication. Abstract
Naïve T and T memory cell subsets are closely related to immune response and can provide important information for the diagnosis and treatment of immunological and hematological disorders. Lymphocyte compartment undergoes dramatic changes during adulthood; age-related reference values derived from healthy individuals are crucial. However, extensively detailed reference values of peripheral blood lymphocytes in the whole spectrum of adulthood detected by multi-color flow cytometry on a single platform are rare. Three hundred and nine healthy adult volunteers were recruited from Tianjin in China. The absolute counts and percentages of CD3+CD4+ T cells, CD3+CD8+ T cells, naïve T cells (Tn), T memory stem cells (Tscm), central memory T cells (Tcm), effector memory T cells (Tem), and terminal effector T cells (Tte) were detected by flow cytometry with single platform technologies. Reference range of absolute counts and percentage of T lymphocyte subsets were formulated by different age and gender. The results showed that Tn and Tscm cells, which had stem cell properties, decreased with aging; while, Tcm and Tem increased with aging, which increased from 18 to 64 years old but presented no significant change over the 65 years old. Gender had an influence on the fluctuation of lymphocyte subsets, the absolute count of CD3+CD8+, CD8+Tcm, CD8+Tem in males were higher than those in females. The reference values of percentages and absolute numbers of naïve T and T memory cell subsets can help doctors to understand the immune state of patients and evaluate conditions of prognosis then adjust the treatment for patients. Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to investigate the rate of concordance between indirect- and direct laryngoscopy and final pathology in patients undergoing laryngeal microsurgery. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case study. METHODS This study was conducted in the Otolaryngology clinic of a tertiary center between January 2017 and June 2020. Archives records of 432 patients, who underwent laryngeal microsurgery because of benign and premalignant lesions or malignancy, were examined. The patients were divided into three subgroups according to pathology results: benign lesions, premalignant lesions, and malignancies. RESULTS There were 400 laryngeal lesions from 385 patients, that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 307 (79.7%) were male and 78 were (20.3%) female. The average age of patients was 52.88 ± 13.21 years. The most common diagnosis was polyp (34.25%) followed by squamous cell carcinoma (27.75%) and Reinke's edema (8.25%) according to final pathology. For the benign laryngeal lesions, a high correlation level was observed regarding the compatibility of the indirect- and direct laryngoscopy diagnosis, and final pathology (P < 0.001). The laryngeal premalignant lesions and malignancies were significantly more common in older age and male gender (P <0.001). Similarly, smoking usage was more frequent in patients with premalignant lesions and malignancy (P <0.001). The neutrophil count, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, platelet to lymphocyte ratio, neutrophil to platelet ratio as well as CRP value were significantly higher in malignancy group (P <0.05). On the other hand, lymphocyte ratio was smaller in the malignancy group compared with the benign and premalignant lesions, and this difference was significant (P = 0.016). CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated a high rate of agreement between the clinical diagnosis and pathology results in patients with benign laryngeal lesions, in contrast to premalignant lesions and malignancies. Also, the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, platelet to lymphocyte ratio, neutrophil to platelet ratio as well as CRP were shown to be increased in patients with laryngeal malignancies.

Abstract
Introduction Immune function strongly influences the outcome of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It's vital to understand the immune state of patients through detecting the percentage and number of lymphocyte subsets accurately, and helpful to evaluate conditions of prognosis and adjust treatment for patients. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study in First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tianjin, China. The absolute counts and percentages of CD3+, CD3 + CD4+, CD3 + CD8+, B and NK cells were determined by single platform technologies. 172 patients received treatment including surgery or chemotherapy after surgery. The factors affecting disease progression were analyzed by Binary Logistic regression. Progression free survival (PFS) calculating survivals were with the method of Kaplan-Meier. The log-rank test and cox's proportional hazard regression (enter method) were used for univariable and multivariable analyses respectively. Results Relative to normal controls, patients with NSCLC at different stages showed decreased absolute lymphocyte count obviously, rather than lymphocyte percentages. Different treatments had unlike influence on the homeostasis of lymphocytes and the effects last for a long time. Logistic regression showed CD3 + CD4+ and CD3 + CD8+ could contribute to favorable prognosis. Multivariate analysis of prognostic factors of PFS showed CD3 + CD4+ cell was independent factor for predicting PFS. Conclusions The absolute count of CD3+, CD3 + CD4+, CD3 + CD8+, B and NK cells were better indication of the patient's immune state than percentages of each lymphocyte subsets. Immune function was impaired in patients with non-small cell lung. The high level of baseline absolute CD3 + CD4+ cells count contributed to longer progression free survival. Abstract
BACKGROUND The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) may be useful for drawing conclusions about the survival of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. METHODS Clinical data of 156 patients managed for HNSCC at two head and neck surgery centres were analyzed retrospectively. We studied the relationships between survival and PLR as well as NLR. RESULTS With regards to 5-year survival, the difference between the two groups with PLR values lower or higher than the threshold was statistically significant (p = 0.004), and we found the same for disease-free survival (p = 0.05), and tumour-specific mortality (p = 0.009). Concerning NLR, the difference in tumour-specific survival was statistically significant (p = 0.006). According to the multivariate analysis, NLR values higher than the threshold indicated an enhanced risk for overall as well as for tumour-specific mortality. CONCLUSION In HNSCC patients, a high NLR may be considered as an independent risk factor for 5-year overall survival.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical value of the preoperative neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in the peripheral blood of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) patients. Clinical data obtained from 240 patients with CRC undergoing radical surgical resection in Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University (Jinan, Shandong, China) between January 2011 and April 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. Data were also collected from 110 patients with colon polyps and 48 healthy volunteers to serve as controls for comparative analysis. The clinicopathological characteristics of the patients in the low and high NLR and RDW groups were compared. The NLR and RDW values were compared prior to and following surgery. Kaplan-Meier analyses and Cox regression modeling were performed to predict overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). The NLR and RDW levels in the CRC patients were markedly higher than those in the colon polyp patients and the healthy controls. The optimum NLR and RDW cutoff points for CRC were 2.06 and 13.45%, respectively. Significant differences were detected in tumor location, diameter, degree of differentiation, tumor depth, carcinoembryonic antigen and carbohydrate antigen 199 when comparing the high and low NLR groups (P<0.05). A high RDW was significantly associated with distant metastasis and older age in CRC patients. No significant difference was detected in the NLR and RDW levels of CRC patients prior to and following surgery (P>0.05). CRC patients with an increased RDW had significantly worse OS and DFS rates, particularly those with metastatic CRC (P<0.05). Patients with a high NLR exhibited a reduced DFS time in CRC (P=0.053), although this difference was not significant, and a significantly worse DFS time in metastatic CRC (P=0.047). In conclusion, it is convenient to use preoperative NLR and RDW to predict prognosis following surgery for patients with CRC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an important cardiovascular risk factor for insulin resistance and has been linked to colorectal adenoma via inflammation. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been suggested as an important inflammatory marker. We initiated this investigation to determine the relationship between colorectal adenoma and NLR in patients with MetS. METHODS We examined participants who visited the Health Promotion Center at Kosin University Gospel Hospital, Busan, Korea. Subjects who underwent both colonoscopy and liver ultrasonography were included. Colorectal adenoma was defined as the presence of a colon polyp with a histologically adenomatous component. MetS was defined according to the modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III definition for South Asians. Anthropometric measurements and biochemical tests of liver and metabolic function were assessed. RESULTS A total of 1007 subjects were included in the study sample. Their mean age was 48.3 ± 9.7 years and 262 (26.0%) subjects had MetS, while 439 (43.6%) subjects had pathologically proven colorectal adenoma. Subjects with MetS were older, more likely to be male, and had significantly higher prevalences of colorectal adenoma (49.2% vs. 41.6%, P = 0.032), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (62.8% vs. 19.5%, P < 0.001), and higher NLR (2.0 ± 0.9 vs. 1.7 ± 0.7, P < 0.001) compared to those without MetS. High NLR (≥2.0) was an independent factor affecting the prevalence of colorectal adenoma [odds ratio (OR) 1.38, confidence interval (95% CI) 1.02-1.88, P = 0.040], especially in subjects with MetS (OR 1.91, 95% CI 1.12-3.28, P = 0.018). CONCLUSION High NLR was associated with increased colorectal adenomatous polyps, particularly in subjects with MetS. Screening colonoscopies for the prevention of colorectal adenoma may be warranted for patients with high NLR and MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of our study was to evaluate all lesions in the adenoma-dysplasia-cancer sequence of the colon and to examine whether the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) can distinguish polyps indicating dysplasia and cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 397 patients who had colonoscopic polypectomy between January 2010 and December 2014 were included in our retrospective study. The patients were divided into four groups: patients with hyperplastic polyps, patients with adenomatous polyps, patients with dysplasia, and patients with cancer. The NLR was calculated as a simple ratio indicating the relationship between counts of absolute neutrophil and absolute lymphocyte. RESULTS The NLR increased in line with the adenomatous polyp-dysplasia-cancer sequence, with the highest ratio established among cancer patients (2.05 (0.27-10), 2.34 (0.83-14.70) and 3.25 (0.81-10.0), respectively). The NLR was significantly higher among cancer patients than among patients with adenomatous polyps and hyperplastic polyps (p values were 0.001 and 0.004, respectively). The lymphocyte count of cancer patients was prominently lower when compared to those in groups with adenomatous polyps and hyperplastic polyps (p values were 0.001 and 0.003, respectively). The NLR was found to be significantly higher in patients with polyps larger than 10 mm [2.71 (0.90-14.70)] when compared to those with polyps smaller than 10 mm [2.28 (0.27-11.67)] (p<0.001). With the NLR threshold set at 2.20, it was possible to predict cancerous polyps with a sensitivity of 71.4% and a specificity of 52.5% (AUC: 0.665, 95% CI: 0.559-0.772, p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS NLR is a cheap, universally available, simple and reliable test that can help predict cancerous polyps. It can be used as a non-invasive test for monitoring polyps.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation plays an important role in the development and progression of CRC. The members of inflammatory biomarkers, preoperative NLR and PLR, have been proved by numerous studies to be promising prognostic biomarkers for CRC. However, the diagnostic value of the two biomarkers in CRC remains unknown, and no study reported the combined diagnostic efficacy of NLR, PLR and CEA. METHODS Five hundred and fifty-nine patients with I-III stage CRC undergoing surgical resection and 559 gender- and age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this retrospective study. NLR and PLR were calculated from preoperative peripheral blood cell count detected using white blood cell five classification by Sysmex XT-1800i Automated Hematology System and serum CEA were measured by electrochemiluminescence by ELECSYS 2010. The diagnostic performance of NLR, PLR and CEA for CRC was evaluated by ROC curve. RESULTS Levels of NLR and PLR in the cases were significantly higher than them in the healthy controls. ROC curves comparison analyses showed that the diagnostic efficacy of NLR (AUC=.755, 95%CI=.728-.780) alone for CRC was significantly higher than PLR (AUC=.723, 95%CI=.696-.749, P=.037) and CEA (AUC=.690, 95%CI=.662-.717, P=.002) alone. In addition, the diagnostic efficacy of the combination of NLR, PLR and CEA(AUC=.831, 95%CI=.807-.852)for CRC was not only significantly higher than NLR alone but also higher than any combinations of the two of these three biomarkers (P<.05). Moreover, the NLR and PLR in the patients with TNM stage I/II was higher than that in the healthy controls, and patients with stage III had a higher NLR and PLR than those with stage I/II, but no significant difference was observed. CONCLUSION Our study indicated that preoperative NLR could be a CRC diagnostic biomarker, even for early stage CRC, and the combination of NLR, PLR and CEA could significantly improve the diagnostic efficacy.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to investigate the role of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a prognostic marker of rectal cancers. METHODS We undertook a retrospective review of patients with rectal cancer. Pre-treatment NLR was assessed for association and predictive values against clinicopathological staging and post-treatment outcomes. RESULTS A total of 140/180 cases were included in the final analysis [male:female 2:1; mean age 68 years (interquartile range 58-75)]. The pre-operative mean NLR was 5.4 ± 6.8. There was a strong positive correlation between NLR and C-reactive protein (Spearman's rho 64.3%, p < 0.001). A high NLR was associated with a positive nodal status on MRI (5.2 vs. 3.8, p = 0.03) and histopathological (4.8 vs. 3.8, p = 0.02) assessment. The NLR showed an average value for predicting MRI and pathological nodal status on receiver operating characteristic analysis [area under the curve = 0.72 (95% CI = 0.54-0.91), p = 0.031 and area under the curve = 0.64 (95% CI = 0.52-0.077), p = 0.021, respectively]. On multivariate analysis, the total lymph node retrieved at operation was the best predictor of pathological nodal involvement; NLR did not show any predictive value. Patients with an NLR >4 showed reduced recurrence-free (60 vs. 86 months, p = 0.52) and overall survival (57 vs. 84 months, p = 0.40) without statistical significance. CONCLUSION Raised pre-treatment NLR may indicate nodal involvement in patients with rectal cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic myeloproliferative diseases are clonal stem cell diseases which occur as a result of uncontrollable growth and reproduction of hematopoietic stem cells, which are the myeloid series source in bone marrow. Recent studies have suggested that chronic inflammation can be a triggering factor in the clonal change in chronic myeloproliferative neoplasia (CMPN). In our study, we evaluated the existence of a chronic inflammation process in our Philadelphia negative (Ph-)CMPN patients using inflammation parameters in combination with demographic, laboratory and clinical characteristics of the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Demographic characteristics, clinical and laboratorial data, and thrombosis histories of 99 Ph-CMPN patients, who were diagnosed at our outpatient clinic of hematology in accordance with WHO 2008 criteria, were analyzed retrospectively,with 80 healthy individuals of matching gender and age included as controls. Complete blood counts, sedimentation, C reactive protein (CRP), JAK V617F gene mutations, abdomen ultrasound images and previous thrombosis histories of these patients were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Ph-CMPN and healthy control groups included 99 and 80 cases, respectively. PV, ET and MF diagnoses of patients were 43 (%43.4), 44 (44.4%) and 12 (12.1%), respectively. JAK V617F gene mutation was found to be positive in 64 (71.1%) of all cases and in 27(65.8%), 32 (82%), 5 (50%) of the cases in PV, ET and PMF groups, respectively. Thrombosis was determined as 12 (12%) in the entire group, 12.5% in the JAK V617F negative and 15.3% in the positive patients, with no statistical significance (p=0.758). No significant difference was observed between patients with and without previous thrombosis history in respect to hemogram parameters, sedimentation and CRP (p>0.05), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), erythrocyte distribution width (RDW), mean platelet volume (MPV) and sedimentation levels of the patient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colon polyps need to be excised upon detection during colonoscopy due to the risk of malignancy irrespective of their size. In our study, we retrospectively evaluated the clinicopathological characteristics of polyps detected during colonoscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS We assessed 379 patients with polyps detected during colonoscopy between January 2010 and May 2012. The demographics, complaints, colonoscopy findings (shape, place and size of the polyp) and histopathological findings were recorded. We carried out statistical analysis using PASW 18.0 for Windows. RESULTS There were 227 males (59.9%) and 152 females (40.1%) in the trial. The mean age was 53.8 years (32-90). The most common complaint was rectal bleeding (36.1%), followed by abdominal pain (35.4%). Polyps were detected most commonly in the rectosigmoid region (43.8%), followed by the descending colon (17.4%). Some 239 patients had a single polyp (63.1%) while 140 were found to have multiple polyps (36.9%). While tubular adenoma was the most common pathological type, occurring in 181 patients (47.8%), tubulovillous adenoma (14.2%) and hyperplastic polyp (12.7%) followed, occurring in 54 and 48 patients respectively. While 313 patients (82.6%) did not feature dysplasia, 37 patients (9.7%) exhibited low- grade dysplasia, 28 (7.7%) had high-grade dysplasia and 4 had cancer (1.1%). The rates of villous components and dysplasia were detected to be high among pedunculated polyps and polyps larger than 1 cm (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Due to the fact that large-diameter polyps with malignant potential are commonly located in the left colon and have a high prevalence among the middle-aged individuals, it would be appropriate to screen this population at regular intervals via rectosigmoidoscopy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a simple index of systemic inflammatory response, and has been shown to be a prognostic indicator in some types of cancer. Inflammation has been implicated in the initiation and progression of thyroid cancer. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of NLR with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and different benign thyroid pathologies like multinodular goiter (MNG) and lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT). MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively evaluated the neutrophil, lymphocyte counts and NLR calculated from these parameters of 232 patients with histologically confirmed as multinodular goiter (group MNG) (n=70), lymphocytic thyroiditis (group LT) (n=97), LT with PTC (group LT- PTC) (n=25) and PTC (group PTC) (n=40). The optimal cut-off value for NLR was determined. RESULTS NLR level was significantly higher in groups LT-PTC and PTC as compared to groups MNG and LT (p<0.05). NLR of LT subgroups according to TSH levels were not different (p>0.05). When we grouped the patients as benign and malignant according to PTC presence, the optimum NLR cut-off point obtained from ROC analysis was 1.91 (sensitivity 89.0% and specificity 54.5%). CONCLUSIONS Since NLR was significantly elevated in group LT-PTC and group PTC, NLR value may give an opinion as a potential marker in differentiation of benign and malign thyroid disorders. For this purpose a cut-off value of 1.91 for NLR may be accepted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the significance of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio for the prediction of the viscosity of otitis media with effusion. METHODS This retrospective study was performed on 81 patients who were admitted to the otolaryngology clinic.The patients were divided into two groups according to their effusion type, as serous or mucoid, which was defined intraoperatively after myringotomy. The NLR and PLR were calculated as a simple ratio between the absolute neutrophil/platelet and absolute lymphocyte counts.Tympanostomy tube insertion was performed for all cases.Under direct visualization, the effusion was aspirated and classified as serous or mucous. RESULTS We postulated that an NLR value of less than 1.38 may show mucoid effusion and if the PLR value is less than 97.96, the effusion is mucoid. CONCLUSIONS We speculate that a useful predictor of viscosity for a middle ear effusion could prevent unnecessary surgeries and additional costs in the treatment of EMO. Additional studies are needed to confirm our results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer in males and the second in females in Iran. Males are more likely to develop CRC than women and age is considered as a main risk factor for colorectal cancer. Prevalence of colorectal cancer has been increasing in Asian countries. AIM The object of this study was to determine the clinical and pathology characteristics of colorectal polyps in Iranian patients and to investigate the variation between our populations with other populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 167 patients with colorectal polyps were included in our study. All underwent colonoscopy during 2009-2013 and specimens were taken through polypectomy and transferred to pathology. All data in patient files including pathology reports were collected and analyzed by SPSS 16 software. A two-tailed test was used and a P-value of <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS Mean age of participants was 57±15. Some 84 were females (50.3%) and 83 males (49.7%). Total of 225 polyps were detected which 119 (52.9%) were in males and 106 (47.1%) were in females. Solitary polyps were observed in 124 patients (74%), 26 (15.6%) had two polyps and 17 (10.1%) with more than two polyps (three to five). Rectosigmoid was the site of most of the polyps (63.1%), followed by 19.6% in the descending colon, 7.6% in the transverse, 5.8% in the ascending, and 3.1% in the cecum, data being missing in two cases. CONCLUSIONS Recto sigmoid was site of most of the polyps. The most prevalent type of lesion was adenomatous polyps detected in 78 (34.7%). Mixed hyperplastic adenomatous type observed in 70 (31.1%). This high prevalence of adenomatous polyps in Iranian patients implies the urgent need for screening plans to prevent further healthcare problems with colorectal cancer in the Iranian population.

Abstract
The present study retrospectively analyzed the laboratory data of patients who had undergone a colonoscopy between April 2011 and March 2014, with the aim of assessing whether these variables could be used to predict the presence of colorectal polyps (CP). A total of 1,471 patients were enrolled (731 men, 68.5±10.8 years; 740 women, 66.7±10.8 years). One-way analysis of variance was performed to analyze the association between the presence of CP and a range of laboratory variables. Logistic regression analysis was performed to establish a regression equation to predict the presence of CP. Receiver-operator characteristics analysis was applied to investigate the performance of the regression equation. Patients with CP were older than those without CP (P<0.0001). Serum uric acid (UA) levels were higher in patients with CP, compared to those without CP (P=0.0007). To investigate the possibility that older age and higher UA levels could predict the presence of CP, logistic regression analysis was performed (P=0.0008). The regression equation was as follows: ln(p/1 - p) = 2.79015 - 0.01836 × age - 0.28542 × UA (mg/dl), where p indicates the presence of CP. Receiver-operator characteristic analysis showed the area under the curve to be 0.62092 and the threshold value of P was 0.4370. Sensitivity and specificity of the threshold value were 77.6 and 44.2%, respectively. Advanced age and higher serum UA levels were associated with the presence of CP. In conclusion, logistic regression analysis obtained a regression equation that predicted the presence of CP with a higher sensitivity, but poorer specificity, compared to fecal occult blood testing.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and clinicopathological features in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). METHODS We performed an analysis of 843 patients, including 321 patients with PTC, 83 patients with thyroid adenoma and 439 patients with nodular goiter (NG). Thyroglobulin and thyrotropin were measured in each patient. Neutrophils, lymphocytes, and platelets were counted. Statistical analysis was used to correlate the NLR with demographic and histopathologic characteristics of the patients. RESULT Age correlated with NLR and lymphocyte number in patients with PTC and NG. In patients aged >45 years, those with PTC had a higher NLR and a lower lymphocyte count than those with NG. Patients with PTC aged <45 years had a higher leukocyte count and a lower NLR than those aged ≥45 years. Patients with clinical stage I/II PTC had a lower NLR and a higher lymphocyte count than patients with stage III/IV. CONCLUSIONS Younger patients with PTC had a higher lymphocyte count but a lower NLR than older patients with PTC. The NLR and lymphocyte counts were associated with the clinical stage. Thus, a higher NLR and a lower lymphocyte count may be prognostic for stratifying patients with thyroidal goiters and are risk factors of PTC for older patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study variation in T lymphocyte subgoups and its clinical significance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS Levels of CD3+ , CD4+ , CD8+ , CD4+/CD8+, NK and Treg cells in peripheral blood of NSCLC cases and healthy adults were determined by flow cytometry. RESULTS CD3+ , CD4+ and CD4+/CD8+ ratio and NK cells in NSCLCs were decreased significantly in comparison with the control group (P < 0.01), and decreased with increase in the clinical stage of NSCLC, while CD8+ cells demonstrated no significant change (P > 0.05). Treg cells were significantly more frequent than in the control group (P < 0.01), and increased with the clinical stage of NSCLC. CONCLUSION The cellular immune function of the NSCLC patients is lowered. It is important to detect change of T lymphocyte subgroups by flow cytometry for the diagnosis, treatment and prognostic assessment of NSCLC patients.
