Abstract
Simple Summary Neuroblastoma (NB) presents diverse biological and clinical characteristics, from spontaneous regression to highly malignant and aggressive unfavorable tumors that condition the therapeutic failure of conventional treatments. The tumorigenesis of NB can be the result of different genetic variants, which can influence the clinical outcome, and the survival of patients who have metastatic tumors is low. The role of cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6 has been described in the NB microenvironment promoting tumor progression and metastasis. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-174 G > C in IL-6 and -251 T > A and +781 C > T in IL-8 regulate the expression of these cytokines, and could be associated with the clinical outcome in patients with NB. Our objective was to evaluate the association of the genetic polymorphisms of IL-6 and IL-8, as well as the serum levels of these cytokines in patients with NB, as this will allow the genetic bases of NB to be characterized and understood, in order to predict the outcome of the disease and develop new therapeutic strategies. Abstract There is evidence that high circulating levels of IL-6 and IL-8 are markers of a poor prognosis in various types of cancer, including NB. The participation of these cytokines in the tumor microenvironment has been described to promote progression and metastasis. Our objective was to evaluate the prognostic role of genetic polymorphisms and serum levels of IL-6 and IL-8 in a cohort of Mexican pediatric patients with NB. The detection of the SNPs rs1800795 IL-6 and rs4073 and rs2227306 IL-8 was carried out by PCR-RFLP and the levels of cytokines were determined by the ELISA method. We found elevated circulating levels of IL-8 and IL-6 in NB patients compared to the control group. The genotype frequencies of the rs1800795 IL-6 and rs4073 IL-8 variants were different between the patients with NB and the control group. Likewise, the survival analysis showed that the GG genotypes of rs1800795 IL-6 (p = 0.014) and AA genotypes of rs4073 IL-8 (p = 0.002), as well as high levels of IL-6 (p = 0.009) and IL-8 (p = 0.046), were associated with lower overall survival. We confirmed the impact on an adverse prognosis in a multivariate model. This study suggests that the SNPs rs1800795 IL-6 and rs4073 IL-8 and their serum levels could be promising biomarkers of a poor prognosis, associated with overall survival, metastasis, and a high risk in Mexican children with NB.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-4 and -13 are structurally and functionally related cytokines sharing common receptor subunits. They regulate immune responses and, moreover, are involved in the pathogenesis of a variety of human neoplasms. Three different receptors have been described for IL-4, but only IL-4 receptor type II (IL-4Rα/IL-13Rα1) is expressed in solid tumors. While IL-13 can also bind to three different receptors, IL-13 receptor type I (IL-4Rα/IL-13Rα1/IL-13Rα2) and type II (IL-4Rα/IL-13Rα1) are expressed in solid tumors. After receptor binding, IL-4 and IL-13 can mediate tumor cell proliferation, survival, and metastasis in gastric or colon cancer. This review summarizes the results about the role of IL-4/IL-13 and their receptors in gastric and colon cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of -251A>T polymorphism in the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene in gastric cancer was intensively evaluated, but the results of these studies were inconsistent. OBJECTIVE Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to provide a comprehensive data on the association of IL-8 -251T>A polymorphism with gastric cancer. METHODS All eligible studies were identified in PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Wanfang and CNKI databases before September 01, 2019. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived from a fixed effect or random effect model. RESULTS A total of 33 case-control studies with 6,192 cases and 9,567 controls were selected. Overall, pooled data showed that IL-8 -251T>A polymorphism was significantly associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer under all five genetic models, i.e., allele (A vs T: OR=1.189, 95% CI 1.027-1.378, P=0.021), homozygote (AA vs TT: OR=1.307, 95% CI 1.111-1.536, P=0.001), heterozygote (AT vs TT: OR=1.188, 95% CI 1.061-1.330, P=0.003), dominant (AA+AT vs TT: OR=1.337, 95% CI 1.115-1.602, P=0.002) and recessive (AA vs AT+TT: OR=1.241, 95% CI 1.045-1.474, P=0.014). The stratified analysis by ethnicity revealed an increased risk of gastric cancer in Asians and mixed populations, but not in Caucasians. Moreover, stratified by country found a significant association in Chinese, Korean and Brazilian, but not among Japanese. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis suggests that the IL-8 -251T>A polymorphism is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer, especially by ethnicity (Asian and mixed populations) and country (Chinese, Korean and Brazilian).

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM The present study aimed at evaluating the contribution of IL-4 promoter T-1099G (rs2243248), C-589T (rs2243250), C-33T (rs2070874) genotypes to the risk of breast cancer in Taiwanese. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 1232 breast cancer patients and 1232 age-matched controls were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) methodology. RESULTS Genotypic frequencies of IL-4 rs2243248, rs2243250 and rs2070874 were not differentially distributed between case and control groups. Consistently, there was no difference in the distribution of allelic frequencies among patients and controls. CONCLUSION IL-4 rs2243248, rs2243250 and rs2070874 do not confer breast cancer susceptibility in Taiwanese.

Effects of IL-4-590C/T (rs2243250) Polymorphism on the Susceptibility of Smoking-Related Cancer: A Meta-Analysis Involving 11,407 Subjects. BIOMED RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2019; 2019:3104176. Abstract
Background Several previous studies have assessed the relationship between IL-4-590C/T gene polymorphism and smoking-related cancer in recent years; however, the results remain controversial. Based on it, the study intends to clarify whether IL-4-590C/T variant increases the risk of smoking-related cancer through meta-analysis. Methods We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang data information service platform to collect qualified case-control studies in strict accordance with the inclusion and exclusion standards. The 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and its odds ratio (OR) were adopted to access the relation between IL-4-590C/T gene polymorphism and smoking-related cancer; sensitivity analysis and publication bias assessment were carried out after the studies' quality evaluation. Results 17 studies were included in total, with 5,061 patients and 6,346 control cases. A significant association between IL-4-590C/T variant and smoking-related cancer in total population was revealed in our meta-analysis results, and IL-4-590C/T variant might have a relatively protective effect on smoking-related cancer (CT vs. TT: P=0.026, OR = 0.900, 95% CI: 0.820–0.987). Subgroup analysis by ethnicity showed that the IL-4-590C/T polymorphism was associated with a decreased risk of smoking-related cancer in the Asian population (CT vs. TT: P=0.008, OR = 0.878, 95% CI: 0.798–0.967; CC + CT vs. TT: P=0.030, OR = 0.903, 95% CI: 0.824–0.990). Subgroup analysis based on types of cancer demonstrated the IL-4-590C/T variant achieved a lower risk in renal cell cancer (CC vs. TT: P=0.046, OR = 0.640, 95% CI: 0.412–0.993). Conclusion There is a conspicuous association between IL-4-590C/T polymorphism and decreased risk of smoking-related cancer, particularly in Asians. And IL-4-590C/T polymorphism may have a protective effect on renal cell cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori infection is recognized as the main risk factor for gastric cancer (GC), the fifth most common neoplasia worldwide. H. pylori interacts with the immune system, disrupting the cytokine network and inducing chronic inflammation. This work aimed to evaluate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in selected cytokine gene promoters and GC. METHODS The study included 359 subjects, 125 GC patients, 109 intestinal metaplasia (IM) patients and 125 asymptomatic controls. DNA was extracted from white blood cells and nine SNPs in cytokine gene promoters were genotyped using predesigned 5'-endonulease assays. The association of the SNPs with IM and GC was evaluated using multinomial regression models. RESULTS Both genotypes, TC (OR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.27-0.98) and TT (OR = 0.42, 95% CI = 0.20-0.91) in the locus - 509 of the TGF-β promoter were significantly associated with GC. The TT genotype in the locus - 819 of the IL-10 promoter was also significantly associated with GC (OR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.17-0.81). No significant association was found with SNPs IL-4 -590 T/C (rs1800629), IL-6 -573G/C (rs1800796), IL-10 -592C/A (rs1800872), IL-10 -1082A/G (rs1800896), and, IFN-γ -1615C/T (rs2069705). CONCLUSIONS SNPs in TGFβ (- 509 C/T, rs1800469) and IL-10 (- 819 C/T, rs1800871) promoters were associated with a lower risk for GC in a Mexican population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Interleukins are important molecules involved in tumor formation. In this study, the association between renal cell carcinoma (RCC) risk and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on IL-4/IL-13/IL-4R was assessed. METHODS We recruited 620/623 cases/controls and conducted a case-control study. Five tagSNPs (i.e., IL-4R rs8832, IL-4R rs4787951, IL-13 rs1881457, IL-13 rs2066960 and IL-13 rs2069744) were selected. Odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained to appraise the association between SNPs and RCC susceptibility. Luciferase report assay and EMSA were conducted to investigate whether SNPs could affect binding affinity of transcription factors to target genes. RESULTS IL-4R rs4787951T>C was significantly associated with RCC susceptibility. Individuals carrying CC genotypes had a significant increment in RCC risk compared with TT genotype carriers (adjusted OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.07-2.28, P = 0.020). By stratified analyses, more pronounced association was found in the female, diabetic or without smoking, drinking and hypertension group. Besides, SNP rs4787951 could influence the binding affinity of IL-4R to transcription factors. Sequence surrounding allele T was prone to bind transcription factor NFATc. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that IL-4R rs4787951T>C was associated with susceptibility of RCC and could be a predictive biomarker for RCC risk.

Abstract
ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Gastric adenocarcinoma is the fourth most common cause of cancer-associated death worldwide. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the immunological status of patients with gastric cancer before surgery and circulating cytokines as potential diagnostic biomarkers for gastric cancer. METHODS: We included 90 healthy controls and 95 patients with distal Gastric adenocarcinoma in Mazandaran, Sari, Iran. We measured serum IL-2, IL-10 and IL-12 Levels by a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using the IBL international GMBH kit. RESULTS: The serum IL-10 levels in the patients with Gastric adenocarcinoma were significantly higher than those of the healthy controls (P=0.02). There were no significant differences in serum IL-2 and IL-12 levels between patients with gastric cancer and healthy controls. CONCLUSION: Increased levels of IL-10 might be useful as diagnostic biomarkers for Gastric adenocarcinoma; however, this needs to be confirmed with larger number of patients and with control groups other than blood donors, properly age paired. These results suggest that positive expression of IL-10 may be useful as a molecular marker to distinguish stage of gastric cancers which can be more readily controlled.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric cancer is worldwide the third major cause of cancer related death. Risk factors for gastric cancer includes Helicobacter pylori infection, gastric ulcer, less hygienic condition, use of tobacco, alcohol consumption, use of salted, smoked food, genetic alterations etc. In order to identify the risk factors associated with gastric cancer in South Indian population a case-control study involving 200 proven gastric cancer cases and 400 controls was conducted. METHODS A structured questionnaire was used to interview all the subjects who participated in our study. Genotyping assay was performed using Taqman allelic discrimination assay for 5 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs)-TGFβ C-509T, TGFβ T869C, XRCC1 Arg194Trp, IkBα C642T and IL4C-590T. RESULTS Odds Ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using conditional logistic regression. Statistical analysis on socio-economic factors, lifestyle factors had showed that subjects from low socio economic status, use of tobacco and consumption of non-vegetarian food had increased risk of developing gastric cancer. Multi-factorial analysis for the SNPs adjusting for the risk factors obtained in this study showed that TGFΒ C-509T TT genotypes had four fold increased risk of gastric cancer (OR = 4.11, CI = 1.02-16.56) and TGFβ T869C CC genotype had a decreased risk of gastric cancer (OR = 0.21, CI = 0.05-0.85). CONCLUSION Economic status, tobacco use and food habits play a significant role in gastric cancer development. TT genotype for TGFβ C-509T had an increased risk and CC genotype for TGFβ T869C had a decreased risk of gastric cancer in south Indian population after adjusting for socio-economic factors and lifestyle factors.

Abstract
Cancer incidence is dramatically increasing worldwide, therefore improved prediction and therapeutic methods are needed. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in cytokine genes may contribute to carcinogenesis. Interleukin (IL)-4 gene polymorphisms have been intensively studied with regard to their associations with cancer. However, the results of these previous studies remain inconclusive. The present study, therefore, aimed to conduct a meta-analysis of previously published studies in order to clarify the association of IL-4 with cancer risk. Eligible published articles were searched in Medline, PubMed, Embase and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases up to March 2016. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were used to identify potential associations between IL-4 genetic polymorphisms and the risk of cancer. A meta-analysis was then performed on 10,873 patients and 14,328 controls for IL-4 rs2243250 polymorphism, 3,970 patients and 5,686 controls for IL-4 rs2070874 polymorphism, and 1,896 patients and 2,526 controls for IL-4 rs79071878 polymorphism. A significant association with cancer risk was observed for rs2243250 and rs79071878 polymorphisms. In the subgroup analysis by cancer type, rs2243250 polymorphism was demonstrated to be associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer and breast cancer, rs2070874 polymorphism was correlated with leukemia and oral carcinoma, and rs79071878 polymorphism was relevant to bladder carcinoma risk. In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity, IL-4 rs2243250 polymorphism was demonstrated to be associated with cancer risk in both Caucasian and Asian populations, rs2070874 was associated with cancer risk in Asian populations, while rs79071878 polymorphism was associated with cancer risk in Caucasian populations. In conclusion, the present results suggested that the IL-4 rs2243250 and rs79071878 polymorphisms were associated with cancer susceptibility. Further subgroup analyses revealed that the effects of IL-4 gene polymorphisms on cancer risk may vary by cancer type and by ethnicity.

Abstract
Background Previous studies have suggested that IL4, IL13, and IL4R are associated with serum IgE levels and allergies, and common variants of these genes may alter cancer risk. To clarify these associations, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the associations of IL4, IL13, and IL4R polymorphisms with gastrointestinal cancer risk. Methods We used 27 eligible case–control studies describing the associations of six polymorphisms of IL4, IL13, and IL4R with gastrointestinal cancer risk to calculate summary odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using five different genetic models. The Q-statistic and I2 statistic were calculated to examine heterogeneity. Results The IL4 rs2070874 T allele seems to be associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer (OR 1.11; 95% CI, 1.00–1.24 for T allele vs. C allele). This association was significant in studies conducted outside of Asia (OR 1.28; 95% CI, 1.03–1.58 for T allele vs. C allele) and in studies investigating the association with gastric cancer (OR 1.17; 95% CI, 1.03–1.34 for T allele vs. C allele). However, the IL4R rs1801275 heterozygote seems to be associated with a reduced risk of gastrointestinal cancer (OR 0.79; 95% CI, 0.65–0.96 for AG vs. AA). Other polymorphisms did not show any significant associations with gastrointestinal cancer risk in any of the genetic models and subgroup analyses. Conclusions Our results suggest that certain polymorphisms of IL4 and IL4R may affect susceptibility to gastrointestinal cancer. However, further studies are required to confirm these findings. This meta-analysis included 27 eligible case–control studies. IL4 rs2070874 T allele may increase the risk of gastrointestinal cancer. IL4R rs1801275 variant may reduce the risk of gastrointestinal cancer. Polymorphisms in IL4 and IL4R may affect susceptibility to gastrointestinal cancer.

Abstract
It has been reported that IL-8 was involved in the promotion of invasion of Gastric Cancer (GC), however the underlying mechanism by which IL-8 was observed to be able to promote invasion remains unknown. Here, in our study, IL-8 was shown to be significantly up-regulated in GC compared with paired normal control tissues whose expression was markedly associated with inferior overall prognosis; and IL-8 was displayed to be capable of directly interacting with metadherin (MTDH), which in turn can up-regulate IL-8 expression. Blockage of IL-8/MTDH using specific mono-antibody can abolish the invasion IL-8 mediated. Taken together, our results may provide a novel explanation of working mechanism of IL-8 in the invasion of GC.

Abstract
Gastric cancer (GC) is a common cancer affecting patients around the world. The pathogenesis of gastric cancer has not been understood completely. Genetic mutations and the inflammation induced by Helicobacter pylori (HP) seem to play important roles. The cytokine Interleukin-4 (IL-4) has effects in inflammation, allergies and cancer including GC. The association of IL-4 -590 C>T polymorphism and gastric cancer has been studied in different populations with inconsistent results. Here, we report this meta-analysis showing that the polymorphism of IL-4 -590C>T might not be associated with the GC susceptibility in both Asian and Caucasian populations.

Abstract
Purpose Numerous studies have suggested that the interleukin-4 (IL-4) rs2243250 polymorphism is associated with gastric cancer susceptibility. However, the results were inconsistent. Hence, we carried out a meta-analysis to confirm the conclusion. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, CBM, CNKI, and Wanfang Data to identify relevant studies up to August 20, 2015. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the association between IL-4 rs2243250 polymorphism and gastric cancer susceptibility. All the statistical analyses were performed with Stata 12.0 software. Results A total of eleven published case–control studies were identified, including 2,247 gastric cancer patients and 3,370 controls. Overall, no significant association between IL-4 rs2243250 polymorphism and gastric cancer susceptibility was observed in this meta-analysis (T vs C: OR =1.05, 95% CI =0.95–1.17; TT vs CC: OR =1.20, 95% CI =0.89–1.63; CT vs CC: OR =1.14, 95% CI =0.87–1.48; TT + CT vs CC: OR =1.13, 95% CI =0.89–1.44; TT vs CT + CC: OR =1.02, 95% CI =0.88–1.20). Similar results were found in subgroup analyses according to ethnicity and Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium in controls. Conclusion This meta-analysis suggests that IL-4 rs2243250 polymorphism may not be associated with gastric cancer susceptibility. Further studies are needed to validate this conclusion.

Abstract
Background: Persistent Helicobacter pylori infection confers an increased risk for serious illnesses such as peptic ulcers and gastric cancer. Various cytokines are involved in the regulation of inflammatory immune response in H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa. Objectives: The current study aimed to obtain evidence regarding the association between IL-17, IL-8 and IL-18 expression in peripheral blood and H. pylori infection in Mongolian gerbils. Materials and Methods: Mongolian gerbils were inoculated with H. pylori by a metal stomach catheter. After sacrifice, their gastric mucosae were examined in macroscopic, histological and electron microscopy levels. In addition, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) assay was performed on the IL-17, IL-8 and IL-18 cytokines in the blood samples. Results: Serum levels of IL-17, IL-8 and IL-18 were remarkably up-regulated compared to those of the control group. There was an obvious correlation between the increase of IL-17 and the serious extent of gastritis in the current study. However, the serum levels of IL-8 and IL-18 without getting increasingly more for repetitive intragastric administration. There were plenty of neutrophils infiltrating in the infected group mucosal. Intestinal metaplasia and gastric ulcers were also founded in H. pylori infected animals after enhanced inoculation. The edema, degeneration and necrosis changes could be found in organelles by transmission electron microscopy. More serious pathological changes were detected in the enhanced inoculation groups compared to the cycle group. Conclusions: The serum levels of IL-17, but not IL-8 and IL-18 may serve as a potential biomarker for diagnosis and predicting the prognosis of gastritis caused by H. pylori.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Increasing evidence has indicated that long noncoding ribonucleic acids (lncRNAs) play a major role in cancers. Although certain lncRNAs has been reported to play a role in gastric cancer (GC), specific lncRNAs involved in distant metastasis of GC remain unknown. METHODS Differentially expressed mRNAs and lncRNAs between stage IV and non-stage IV GC were obtained by microarray. Gene ontology and pathway analysis were used to study functions of differential mRNAs. Algorithms were used to predict potential gene targets of cis or trans-acting lncRNAs. Network analysis was performed to analyze each pair of gene-lncRNA, gene-gene, or lncRNA-lncRNA interactions. Expression of lncRNA special for distant metastasis of GC (SDMGC) and target gene TRIM16 were tested in GC tissues and cell lines. RNAi and overexpression were used to observe the biological functions of SDMGC and TRIM16 on GC cells. RESULTS 502 mRNAs and 440 lncRNAs were found to be differentially expressed. 74 gene ontology terms and 38 pathways were associated with the dysregulated transcripts. Fourteen core factors were determined by network analysis. Expression of SDMGC and TRIM16 was upregulated in the distant metastasis tissues, compared with primary GC tissues, which were positive correlation. Silencing of SDMGC or TRIM16 was demonstrated to decrease cell invasion and migration, while upregulated of SDMGC or TRIM16 could promote cell invasion and migration. However, little effect on proliferation, cell cycle, colony formation, and apoptosis was found. CONCLUSIONS SDMGC is obviously upregulated in stage IV GC and may represent a new marker and therapeutic target for GC treatment.

Abstract
Background Gliomas are aggressive tumors of the central nervous system that rely on production of growth factors for tumor progression. Interleukin 8 (IL-8) is up-regulated in gliomas to promote angiogenesis and proliferation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of the IL-8 -251 T/A and +781 C/T polymorphisms and glioma risk. Methods We enrolled 300 glioma patients and 300 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. A prospective hospital-based case–control design and logistic regression analysis were utilized. The IL-8 gene polymorphisms were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results Glioma patients had a significantly higher frequency of IL-8 -251 AA genotype [odds ratio (OR) =1.91, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 1.22, 3.00; P = 0.005] and IL-8 -251 A allele (OR =1.36, 95 % CI = 1.08, 1.70; P = 0.009) than controls. When stratified by the grade of glioma, patients with WHO IV glioma had a significantly higher frequency of IL-8 -251 AA genotype (OR =1.56, 95 % CI = 1.01, 2.39; P = 0.04). Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature that the IL-8 -251 AA genotype and A allele were at a higher risk for glioma.

MATERIALS AND METHODS To provide a more reliable estimation of the association between SNPs in the IL-17 gene and the susceptibility to gastric cancer, we searched PubMed, CNKI, and Wan Fang databases and selected finally six studies covering 2,366 cases and 3,205 controls to perform a meta-analysis. RESULTS Statistical analyses showed that an rs2275913 polymorphism within the IL-17A gene was significantly associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer using a generalized odds ratio (ORG, a model-free approach). Moreover, we also found that the 'A' allele carriers of IL-17A rs2275913 had a significant link with clinicopathological features. However, no significant positive signals were observed in the association analysis of the rs3748067 and rs763780 polymorphisms with the risk of gastric cancer in IL-17A and IL-17F, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Despite some limitations, the present meta-analysis provided a more precise estimation of the relationship between the IL-17 gene SNPs and gastric cancer risk compared with individual studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interleukin-4(IL-4) is a critical inflammatory cytokine and has been involved in pathogenesis of cancer. To date, several studies have investigated the association between IL-4 intron 3 variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) polymorphism and cancer risk in humans; however, the results remain controversial. We performed this meta-analysis to find a more conclusive association between this polymorphism and cancer risk. METHODS Eight eligible case-control studies were identified through searching electronic databases, including 1583 cases and 1638 controls. Odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the strength of the association. RESULTS The results of overall analyses indicated that the variant RP2 allele was associated with a decreased cancer risk compared with the RP1 allele (RP2/RP2 vs. RP1/RP1, OR = 0.64, 95% CI = 0.44-0.94; RP2/RP2 vs. RP1/RP1 + RP1/RP2, OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.60-0.92; RP2 vs. RP1, OR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.56-0.92). In subgroup analyses stratified by ethnicity, there was evidence in the Asian population for an association between this polymorphism and cancer risk (RP2/RP2 vs. RP1/RP1 + RP1/RP2, OR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.63-0.99; RP2 vs. RP1, OR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.61-0.97). CONCLUSIONS IL-4 intron 3 VNTR polymorphism could influence the risk of human cancer. Due to the limitations of this meta-analysis, further well-designed and functional researches should be performed to validate our results.
