Abstract
Terrestrial mollusks, including the invasive giant African snail (Lissachatina fulica), pose significant public health risks due to their role as carriers of various pathogens, such as Angiostrongylus cantonensis and Angiostrongylus costaricensis. This scoping review aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of diseases associated with Lissachatina fulica and other terrestrial mollusks, with a particular focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these conditions. Following the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and the PRISMA-ScR framework, we conducted a systematic search and filtered results, identifying 27 relevant case reports and series for analysis. Our findings reveal that ingesting raw or undercooked snails is the most hazardous exposure route, with a 75% mortality rate in affected adults, particularly in regions where snail consumption is culturally significant, such as France. A. cantonensis is the primary cause of eosinophilic meningitis, while A. costaricensis leads to abdominal angiostrongyliasis. The review also highlights the widespread impact of L. fulica in countries like France, the United States, Brazil, and Colombia, emphasizing the global nature of the threat. Children show consistent vulnerability across all exposure types, underscoring the need for targeted preventive strategies. This review underscores the urgent need for public health interventions, particularly educational campaigns to inform communities about the dangers of L. fulica. Additionally, it highlights the importance of enhancing diagnostic methods and expanding surveillance to better manage the risks associated with these invasive snails. The findings provide valuable insights for the scientific community and recommend a multidisciplinary approach to effectively mitigate the public health risks posed by L. fulica across diverse regions.

Abstract
Abdominal angiostrongyliasis (AA) is a zoonotic and severe parasitic infection caused by Angiostrongylus costaricensis. AA is currently diagnosed by the observation of A. costaricensis-compatible structures in biopsies or the detection of antibodies in serological tests. However, molecular methods targeting homologous sequences of A. costaricensis have not been designed before, and therefore, an HRM-coupled qPCR was developed to detect the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) of the parasite. The present assay successfully amplified DNA of A. costaricensis obtained from different hosts and identified slight sequence differences through the HRM analysis. The detection limit of the HRM-qPCR was 0.00036 ng/µL, 1.0 ng/µL, and 0.1 ng/µL when A. costaricensis DNA was diluted in nuclease-free water, whole blood, and sera, respectively, which highlights its potential use for cell-free DNA detection. Moreover, the reaction did not cross-amplify DNA of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, Strongyloides stercoralis, and other nematodes, thus emphasizing its specificity. Additionally, the assay tested positive in formalin-fixed paraffin embedded biopsies with visible A. costaricensis adults or eggs, but not in samples without evident parasites or a low number of larvae, which suggests that the reaction is useful for confirming the presence of the nematode in clinical samples. Finally, DNA of sera from patients with AA was evaluated with the HRM-qPCR but none tested positive, possibly due to long storage periods of the samples which could have led to cfDNA degradation. These results indicate that this assay may be useful in the confirmation of AA and its prospection for cell-free DNA detection protocols.

Abstract
Dirofilaria immitis, the etiologic agent of canine heartworm disease, like several other filarial nematodes, harbors the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia. To investigate metabolic and functional pathways of D. immitis and Wolbachia individually, along with their interactions, the use of both transcriptomic and genome analysis has becoming increasingly popular. Although several commercial kits are available for the single extraction of either DNA or RNA, no specific protocol has been described for simultaneous extraction of DNA and RNA from such a large organism like an adult D. immitis, where female worms generally reach ∼25 cm in length. More importantly, adult worms of D. immitis can only be obtained either through necropsy of experimentally infected dogs or by minimally-invasive surgical heartworm removal of naturally infected dogs. This makes each individual worm sample extremely important. Thus, in the context of a project aimed at the evaluation of both gene expression analysis and Wolbachia population assessment following different treatments, an optimized protocol for co-extraction of DNA and RNA from a single sample of adult D. immitis has been developed. An optimized method for DNA/RNA co-extraction from large size nematodes using TRIzol® reagent. Allows maximum exploitation of unique samples as adults of D. immitis.

Abstract
Objetive: To confirm the presence of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in Lissachatina fulica individuals in Colombia.Methods: 19 individuals of L. fulica were collected in the city of Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Lung tissue was extracted and two analysis methods were used: visual identification by histological observation, and identification through conventional and real-time PCR. The A. cantonensis detection rate was established taking into account each of the analysis techniques used.Results: Presence of A. cantonensis was confirmed in the lung tissue of L. fulica specimens collected in the city of Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The detection rate based on visual identification through histological analysis was 89%, whereas it was 95% using conventional PCR, and 100% using real-time PCR.Conclusion: This study confirmed for the first time the presence of A. cantonensis associated with L. fulica specimens in Colombia. Therefore, eosinophilic meningitis could be considered an emerging disease in Colombia.
