--Effect of multimodal cues from a predatory fish on refuge use and foraging on an amphidromous shrimp

Structural and functional alterations under stress conditions by contamination: A multi-species study in a non-forced multi-compartmented mesocosm

Despite the existing connectivity and heterogeneity of aquatic habitats, the concept of interconnected landscapes has been frequently overlooked in ecotoxicological risk assessment studies. In this study, a novel mesocosm system, the HeMHAS (Heterogeneous Multi-Habitat Assay System), was constructed with the potential to assess structural and functional changes in a community resulting from exposure to contaminants, while also considering the complex ecological scenarios. Fish (Sparus aurata), shrimp (Palaemon varians) and three species of marine microalgae (Isochrysis galbana, Nannochloropsis gaditana and Tetraselmis chuii) were used as test organisms. Other species, such as Artemia sp. and macroalgae were also introduced into the system as environmental enrichment. All the species were distributed in five interconnected mesocosm compartments containing a copper gradient (0, 1, 10, 100 and 250 μg/L). The mobile fish avoided the copper contaminants from 1 μg/L (24 h-AC50: 4.88 μg/L), while the shrimp avoided from 50 μg/L (24 h-AC50: 136.58 μg/L). This finding suggests interspecies interactions influence habitat selection in contaminated environments, potentially jeopardizing population persistence. Among the non-motile organisms, the growth and chlorophyll content of the microalgae were concentration dependent. The growth of I. galbana was more sensitive (growth inhibition of 50 % at the highest concentration) in contrast to N. gaditana (30 % inhibition at the highest concentration) and T. chuii (25 % inhibition at the last two highest concentrations). In summary, the mesocosm HeMHAS showed how contamination-driven responses can be studied at landscape scales, enhancing the ecological relevance of ecotoxicological research.

Behavioral responses of a clonal fish to perceived predation risk

Predation threat is a major driver of behavior in many prey species. Animals can recognize their relative risk of predation based on cues in the environment, including visual and/or chemical cues released by a predator or from its prey. When threat of predation is high, prey often respond by altering their behavior to reduce their probability of detection and/or capture. Here, we test how a clonal fish, the Amazon molly (Poecilia formosa), behaviorally responds to predation cues. We measured aggressive and social behaviors both under 'risk', where chemical cues from predatory fish and injured conspecifics were present, and control contexts (no risk cues present). We predicted that mollies would exhibit reduced aggression towards a simulated intruder and increased sociability under risk contexts as aggression might increase their visibility to a predator and shoaling should decrease their chance of capture through the dilution effect. As predicted, we found that Amazon mollies spent more time with a conspecific when risk cues were present, however they did not reduce their aggression. This highlights the general result of the 'safety in numbers' behavioral response that many small shoaling species exhibit, including these clonal fish, which suggests that mollies may view this response as a more effective anti-predator response compared to limiting their detectability by reducing aggressive conspecific interactions.

Running away or running to? Do prey make decisions solely based on the landscape of fear or do they also include stimuli from a landscape of safety?

Predator-prey interactions are a key part of ecosystem function, and non-consumptive effects fall under the landscape of fear theory. Under the landscape of fear, the antipredator responses of prey are based on the spatial and temporal distribution of predatory cues in the environment. However, the aversive stimuli (fear) are not the only stimuli prey can utilize when making behavioral decisions. Prey might also be using attractive stimuli that represent safety to guide decision making. Using a novel, orthogonal design, we were able to spatially separate aversive and attractive stimuli to determine whether prey are utilizing safety cues to navigate their environment. Crayfish Faxonius rusticus were placed in the center of a behavioral arena. Aversive stimuli of either predatory bass Micropterus salmoides cues or conspecific alarm cues increased along the x-axis of the behavioral arena. Safety cues (shelters) increased along the y-axis by decreasing the number of shelter openings in this direction. Crayfish were allowed two phases to explore the arena: one without the fearful stimuli and one with the stimuli. Linear mixed models were conducted to determine whether movement behaviors and habitat utilization were affected by the phase of the trial and the type of aversive stimuli. Crayfish responded more strongly to alarm cues than to fear cues, with only alarm cues significantly impacting habitat utilization. When responding to alarm cues, crayfish used safety cues as well as fear cues to relocate themselves within the arena. Based on these results, we argue that crayfish utilize a landscape of safety in conjunction with a landscape of fear when navigating their environment.
