Reliability and validity of the physical activity monitor for assessing energy expenditures in sedentary, regularly exercising, non-endurance athlete, and endurance athlete adults

Wearable and Portable Devices for Acquisition of Cardiac Signals while Practicing Sport: A Scoping Review

Wearable and portable devices capable of acquiring cardiac signals are at the frontier of the sport industry. They are becoming increasingly popular for monitoring physiological parameters while practicing sport, given the advances in miniaturized technologies, powerful data, and signal processing applications. Data and signals acquired by these devices are increasingly used to monitor athletes' performances and thus to define risk indices for sport-related cardiac diseases, such as sudden cardiac death. This scoping review investigated commercial wearable and portable devices employed for cardiac signal monitoring during sport activity. A systematic search of the literature was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. After study selection, a total of 35 studies were included in the review. The studies were categorized based on the application of wearable or portable devices in (1) validation studies, (2) clinical studies, and (3) development studies. The analysis revealed that standardized protocols for validating these technologies are necessary. Indeed, results obtained from the validation studies turned out to be heterogeneous and scarcely comparable, since the metrological characteristics reported were different. Moreover, the validation of several devices was carried out during different sport activities. Finally, results from clinical studies highlighted that wearable devices are crucial to improve athletes' performance and to prevent adverse cardiovascular events.

Concurrent validity of the combined HRV/ACC sensor and physical activity diary when monitoring physical activity in university students during free-living days

The purpose of this research was to determine if the scientific research device combined heart rate variability combined with an acceleration sensor (Firstbeat Bodyguard 2, BG2) was valid and reliable for time spent in different intensity zones in free-living. A total of 55 healthy participants performed 48-h physical activity (PA) monitoring with BG2, ActiGraph GT3X+ (GT3X+), and completed Bouchard Physical Activity Diary (Bouchard) every night. In the available studies, GT3X+ is considered the gold standard scientific research device for PA monitor. We compared BG2 and Bouchard with GT3X+ by difference, correlation, and agreement of PA and energy expenditure (EE) in free-living. The results showed that BG2 estimated PA more accurately than Bouchard, with a modest correlation (r > 0.49), strong agreement (τ > 0.29), and they had the lowest limits of agreement when estimating moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). The EE estimated by Bouchard was the highest among the three methods, and the correlation and agreement between the three methods were high. Our findings showed that the BG2 is valid and reliable for estimating time spent in different intensity zones in free-living, especially in MVPA.

Kinect and Few-Shot Technology-Based Simulation of Physical Fitness and Health Training Model for Basketball Players in Plateau Area

Players in modern basketball have a lot of physical contact, a lot of bumps, and a lot of physical struggles. The competition for the ball, whether in the air or on the ground, is fierce, putting higher demands on the players' physical abilities. Coaches frequently use plateau physical training, which is very effective in developing athletes' cardiopulmonary function, among many other training methods. The proportional length and active area of arms are obtained using the skin color model of the human body, the angle and posture information of each joint is extracted from dynamics, and the 3D posture of arms and dynamic arms is trained and recognized in this paper, which is based on Kinect. The findings revealed that mild hypoxia in the plateau significantly lowered basketball players' performance and that basketball players' maximum heart rate and 1-minute heart rate recovery in high-intensity exercise were lower than those in flat area training.

Modeling Energy Expenditure Estimation in Occupational Context by Actigraphy: A Multi Regression Mixed-Effects Model

The accurate prediction of energy requirements for healthy individuals has many useful applications. The occupational perspective has also been proven to be of great utility for improving workers' ergonomics, safety, and health. This work proposes a statistical regression model based on actigraphy and personal characteristics to estimate energy expenditure and cross-validate the results with reference standardized methods. The model was developed by hierarchical mixed-effects regression modeling based on the multitask protocol data. Measurements combined actigraphy, indirect calorimetry, and other personal and lifestyle information from healthy individuals (n = 50) within the age of 29.8 ± 5 years old. Results showed a significant influence of the variables related to movements, heart rate and anthropometric variables of body composition for energy expenditure estimation. Overall, the proposed model showed good agreement with energy expenditure measured by indirect calorimetry and evidenced a better performance than the methods presented in the international guidelines for metabolic rate assessment proving to be a reliable alternative to normative guidelines. Furthermore, a statistically significant relationship was found between daily activity and energy expenditure, which raised the possibility of further studies including other variables, namely those related to the subject's lifestyle.
