Role of Cod Liver Oil in Reducing Elevated Lipid Parameters

Protective mechanisms of a microbial oil against hypercholesterolemia: evidence from a zebrafish model

A Western diet elevates the circulating lipoprotein and triglyceride levels which are the major risk factors in cardiovascular disease (CVD) development. Consumption of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids can stall the disease progression. Although these fatty acids can significantly impact the intestine under a hypercholesterolemic condition, the associated changes have not been studied in detail. Therefore, we investigated the alterations in the intestinal transcriptome along with the deviations in the plasma lipids and liver histomorphology of zebrafish offered DHA- and EPA-rich oil. Fish were allocated to 4 dietary treatments: a control group, a high cholesterol group and microbial oil groups with low (3.3%) and high (6.6%) inclusion levels. We quantified the total cholesterol, lipoprotein and triglyceride levels in the plasma. In addition, we assessed the liver histology, intestinal transcriptome and plasma lipidomic profiles of the study groups. The results suggested that higher levels of dietary microbial oil could control the CVD risk factor indices in zebrafish plasma. Furthermore, microbial oil-fed fish had fewer liver vacuoles and higher mRNA levels of genes involved in β-oxidation and HDL maturation. Analyses of the intestine transcriptome revealed that microbial oil supplementation could influence the expression of genes altered by a hypercholesterolemic diet. The plasma lipidomic profiles revealed that the higher level of microbial oil tested could elevate the long-chain poly-unsaturated fatty acid content of triglyceride species and lower the concentration of several lysophosphatidylcholine and diacylglycerol molecules. Our study provides insights into the effectiveness of microbial oil against dyslipidemia in zebrafish.

Mercury Exposure from the Consumption of Dietary Supplements Containing Vegetable, Cod Liver, and Shark Liver Oils

Vegetable and fish oils constitute a significant part of all dietary supplements. Due to increasing environmental pollution, the raw materials used for their production may be contaminated with toxic substances, including metals. The aim of the present study was to determine the mercury (Hg) content in vegetable oils, shark liver oils, and cod liver oils. The tests conducted were to help determine the level of mercury contamination of the tested preparations and the related potential threat to human health. The amount of Hg in the tested dietary supplements was compared, and the amount of the metal consumed at various times of use was determined. A total of 36 preparations of dietary supplements available on the Polish market were used for the study. The method of atomic absorption spectrometry using the amalgamation technique was used for the determinations (AMA 254, Altec, Czech Republic). Among the sample of all of the tested preparations, the Hg concentration ranged from 0.023 to 0.427 µg/kg, with an average of 0.165 µg/kg. Differences in Hg content in the various tested preparations (shark liver oil, cod liver oil, and vegetable oils) were statistically significant. The average concentration of Hg in the vegetable oils (0.218 µg/kg) was more than twice that of the cod liver oils (0.106 µg/kg) and shark liver oils (0.065 µg/kg). In none of the tested preparations did the amount of Hg exceed the acceptable standard for dietary supplements (0.10 mg/kg). The analysis showed that the Hg content in vegetable oils, shark liver oils, and fish oils from the Polish market is at a low level, guaranteeing the safety of their use, and as such, they do not pose a threat to health.

Comparison of the Efficacy of Rosuvastatin 5 mg and 10 mg in Patients of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus With Dyslipidemia

Objectives

We did this study intending to compare the efficacy of rosuvastatin 5 mg and 10 mg in patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus with dyslipidemia by validating their effect on lipid profile and the side effects.

Methodology

This study was carried out at the outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital in Multan. Three hundred patients of both genders were included. The research approach employed a parallel-controlled, randomized study. After taking relevant history and physical examination, each patient’s fasting venous blood samples were taken and sent to the institutional laboratory to analyze glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), baseline lipid levels for cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Patients were divided into two groups based on the drug administered. One group was prescribed rosuvastatin 5 mg, and the other group was prescribed rosuvastatin 10 mg. Patients were followed up after six months to record the latest lipid profile. Data analysis was done through SPSS version 24.

Results

Patients in the two groups had similar lipid levels to start with. After six months of therapy, total serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-C were reduced to statistically significant levels in group two compared to group one. However, both groups showed a similar increase in serum levels of HDL-C. Patients treated with 10 mg rosuvastatin showed a slight decrease in BMI. Nine patients treated with 10 mg rosuvastatin reported myalgias compared to only one patient treated with a dose of 5 mg (p<0.005).

Conclusion

Our study concludes that both 5 mg and 10 mg of rosuvastatin exhibit the antihyperlipidemic effect, but high doses are associated with more side effects. Therefore, physicians should be aware of dose titration related to statins as it will ultimately lead to reduced cardiovascular mortality.
