Abstract
In Mexico, more than 30 species of triatomines, vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease, have been collected. Among them, Triatoma pallidipennis stands out for its wide geographical distribution, high infection rates and domiciliation. Local populations of triatomines have shown notable biological and behavioral differences, influencing their vectorial capacity. Six behaviors of epidemiological importance, namely, egg-to-adult development time, median number of blood meals to molt to the next instar, instar mortality rates, aggressiveness (delay in initiating a meal), feeding time and defecation delay, were evaluated in this study for six populations of T. pallidipennis. Those populations from central, western and southern Mexico were arranged by pairs with a combination of high (HP) and medium (MP) of Trypanosoma cruzi human infection and most (MFC) and low (CLF) collection frequencies: HP/MFC, HP/CLF, and MP/MFC. The development time was longer in HP/CLF populations (> 220 days). The median number of blood meals to molt was similar (7-9) among five of the six populations. Mortality rates were greater (> 40 %) in HP/CLF and one MP/MFC populations. All studied populations were aggressive but exhibited slight differences among them. The feeding times were similar (≥ 10 min) for all studied populations within instars, increasing as instars progressed. An irregular pattern was observed in defecation behaviors, with marked differences even between the two populations from the same pair. High percentages of young (57.3-87.9 %), and old (62.4-89.8 %) nymphs, of female (61.1-97.3 %) and male (65.7-93.1 %) of all the studied populations defecated quickly (while eating, immediately after finishing feeding or < 1 min postfeeding). Our results indicate that the HP/MFC populations are potentially highly effective vectors for transmitting T. cruzi infections, while HP/CLF populations are potentially less effective vectors T. cruzi infections.

Abstract
Chagas disease is one of the most significant vector-borne diseases in Mexico. The presence of "sylvatic" triatomine vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas) inside human dwellings necessitates estimating their vectorial capacity. To estimate this capacity in Triatoma protracta nahuatlae (Ryckman), Triatoma sinaloensis (Ryckman), and their laboratory hybrids, 6 biological parameters were examined. Triatoma sinaloensis exhibited the shortest development time (155 days), with a median of 12 blood meals. Mortality rates varied from 35% to 45% in the 3 studied cohorts. All 3 cohorts were aggressive, initiating feeding within 0.5-1 min, and had similar feeding periods ranging from 10 to 18 min. A majority (75.3-97.9%) of the hybrids defecated when feeding, immediately after feeding, or in less than 1 min post-feeding. In contrast, only 7-42% of nymphs of T. sinaloensis defecated during the same period. Our results regarding the 6 parameters studied confirm the potential role of T. p. nahuatlae as an efficient vector of T. cruzi. Triatoma sinaloensis, on the other hand, exhibited limited vectorial capacity primarily due to its poor defecation behavior. Continued surveillance of these "sylvatic" triatomine populations is necessary to prevent an epidemiological problem.

Abstract
Chagas disease affects about eight million people. In view of the issues related to the influence of anthropogenic changes in the dynamics of the distribution and reproductive interaction of triatomines, we performed experimental crosses between species of the Rhodniini tribe in order to evaluate interspecific reproductive interactions and hybrid production capacity. Reciprocal crossing experiments were conducted among Rhodnius brethesi × R. pictipes, R. colombiensis × R. ecuadoriensis, R. neivai × R. prolixus, R. robustus × R. prolixus, R. montenegrensis × R. marabaensis; R. montenegrensis × R. robustus, R. prolixus × R. nasutus and R. neglectus × R. milesi. With the exception of crosses between R. pictipes ♀ × R. brethesi ♂, R. ecuadoriensis ♀ × R. colombiensis ♂ and R. prolixus ♀ × R. neivai ♂, all experimental crosses resulted in hybrids. Our results demonstrate that both allopatric and sympatric species produce hybrids, which can generate concern for public health agencies in the face of current anthropogenic events. Thus, we demonstrate that species of the Rhodniini tribe are capable of producing hybrids under laboratory conditions. These results are of great epidemiological importance and raise an important discussion about the influence of climatic and environmental interactions on Chagas disease dynamics.

Abstract
Under laboratory conditions, Triatoma rosai and T. sordida are able to cross and produce hybrids. In the face of climate and environmental changes, the study of hybrids of triatomines has evolutionary and epidemiological implications. Therefore, we performed morphological, cytological and molecular studies and characterized the feeding and defecation pattern of hybrids from crosses between T. sordida and T. rosai. The morphological characterization of the female genitalia of the hybrids showed that characteristics of both parental species segregated in the hybrids. Cytogenetic analyzes of hybrids showed regular metaphases. According to molecular studies, the mitochondrial marker Cytochrome B (CytB) related the hybrids with T. sordida and the nuclear marker Internal Transcribed Spacer 1 (ITS-1) related the hybrids with T. rosai. Both parents and hybrids defecated during the blood meal. Thus, the hybrids resulting from the cross between T. sordida and T. rosai presented segregation of phenotypic characters of both parental species, 100% homeology between homeologous chromosomes, phylogenetic relationship with T sordida and with T. rosai (with CytB and ITS-1, respectively), and, finally, feeding and defecation patterns similar to the parents.

Abstract
Chagas disease is one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Latin America. Studying the biological parameters of each vector species or subspecies contributes to our understanding of their epidemiologic importance. The aim of our study was to compare the biological parameters and start to estimate the vectorial capacity of Triatoma protracta protracta Ryckman, T. p. nahuatlae Ryckman, and their laboratory hybrids. Specifically, we estimated nine biological parameters to increase knowledge about the potential role of triatomine hybrids in the transmission of T. cruzi to reservoir hosts. Nine biological parameters related to the lifecycle, feeding and defecation patterns, number of females, fecundity, and egg eclosion rates in cohorts of T. p. protracta, T. p. nahuatlae, and their hybrids were evaluated and compared. Eight parameters (exception: number of laid eggs) indicated that T. p. nahuatlae was a potentially effective vector of T. cruzi. Our results showed that the hybrid cohorts had better fitness and could potentially have higher vectorial capacity than the parental cohorts. The outstanding characteristics of the hybrids found in our study could lead to an increase in the epidemiologic risks caused by transmission of T. cruzi to humans.

Abstract
Background The tribe Rhodniini is a monophyletic group composed of 24 species grouped into two genera: Rhodnius and Psammolestes. The genus Psammolestes includes only three species, namely P. coreodes, P. tertius and P. arthuri. Natural hybridization events have been reported for the Rhodniini tribe (for genus Rhodnius specifically). Information obtained from hybridization studies can improve our understanding of the taxonomy and systematics of species. Here we report the results from experimental crosses performed between P. tertius and P. coreodes and from subsequent analyses of the reproductive and morphological aspects of the hybrids. Methods Crossing experiments were conducted between P. tertius and P. coreodes to evaluate the pre- and post-zygotic barriers between species of the Rhodniini tribe. We also performed cytogenetic analyses of the F1 hybrids, with a focus on the degree of pairing between the homeologous chromosomes, and morphology studies of the male gonads to evaluate the presence of gonadal dysgenesis. Lastly, we analyzed the segregation of phenotypic characteristics. Results Interspecific experimental crosses demonstrated intrageneric genomic compatibility since hybrids were produced in both directions. However, these hybrids showed a high mortality rate, suggesting a post-zygotic barrier resulting in hybrid unviability. The F1 hybrids that reached adulthood presented the dominant phenotypic segregation pattern for P. tertius in both directions. These insects were then intercrossed; the hybrids were used in the cross between P. tertius ♀ × P. coreodes ♂ died before oviposition, and the F1 hybrids of P. coreodes ♀ x P. tertius ♂ oviposited and their F2 hybrids hatched (however, all specimens died after hatching, still in first-generation nymph stage, pointing to a hybrid collapse event). Morphological analyses of male gonads from F1 hybrids showed that they did not have gonadal dysgenesis. Cytogenetic analyses of these triatomines showed that there were metaphases with 100% pairing between homeologous chromosomes and metaphases with pairing errors. Conclusion The results of this study demonstrate that Psammolestes spp. have intrageneric genomic compatibility and that post-zygotic barriers, namely unviability of hybrid and hybrid collapse, resulted in the breakdown of the hybrids of P. tertius and P. coreodes, confirming the specific status of species based on the biological concept of species. Abstract
BACKGROUND Meccus' taxonomy has been quite complex since the first species of this genus was described by Burmeister in 1835 as Conorhinus phyllosoma. In 1859 the species was transferred to the genus Meccus and in 1930 to Triatoma. However, in the twentieth century, the Meccus genus was revalidated (alteration corroborated by molecular studies) and, in the twenty-first century, through a comprehensive study including more sophisticated phylogenetic reconstruction methods, Meccus was again synonymous with Triatoma. Events of natural hybridization with production of fertile offspring have already been reported among sympatric species of the T. phyllosoma subcomplex, and experimental crosses demonstrated reproductive viability among practically all species of the T. phyllosoma subcomplex that were considered as belonging to the genus Meccus, as well as between these species and species of Triatoma. Based on the above, we carried out experimental crosses between T. longipennis (considered M. longipennis in some literature) and T. mopan (always considered as belonging to Triatoma) to evaluate the reproductive compatibility between species of the T. phyllosoma complex. In addition, we have grouped our results with information from the literature regarding crosses between species that were grouped in the genus Meccus with Triatoma, in order to discuss the importance of experimental crosses to confirm the generic reorganization of species. RESULTS The crosses between T. mopan female and T. longipennis male resulted in viable offspring. The hatching of hybrids, even if only in one direction and/or at low frequency, demonstrates reproductive compatibility and homeology between the genomes of the parents. CONCLUSION Considering that intergeneric crosses usually do not result in viable offspring in Triatominae, the reproductive compatibility observed between the T. phyllosoma subcomplex species considered in the Meccus genus with species of the Triatoma genus shows that there is "intergeneric" genomic compatibility, which corroborates the generic reorganization of Meccus in Triatoma.

Abstract
There are currently 156 species, grouped into 18 genera and five tribes included in the subfamily Triatominae. All of them are potential vectors of Chagas disease. Triatoma is paraphyletic and the species of this genus have been grouped into complexes and subcomplexes. Triatoma brasiliensis complex is a monophyletic group composed of eight taxa: T. b. brasiliensis, T. b. macromelanosoma, T. juazeirensis, T. sherlocki, T. petrocchiae, T. lenti, T. bahiensis, T. melanica. Experimental crosses have helped in systematic, taxonomic and evolutionary issues of these vectors. Based on this, we carried out experimental crosses between T. lenti and four other species of the T. brasiliensis complex and analyzed the segregation pattern of phenotypic characteristics of T. lenti, T. b. brasiliensis, T. b. macromelasoma, T. juazeirensis and T. melanica in the hybrids. The hybrids resulting from the crosses between T. b. brasiliensis ♀ x T. lenti ♂, T. juazeirensis ♀ x T. lenti ♂, and T. melanica ♀ x T. lenti ♂ showed segregation of characteristics of both parental species. On the other hand, the hybrids between T. lenti ♀ x T. juazeirensis ♂, T. b. macromelasoma ♀ x T. lenti ♂, and T. lenti ♀ x T. melanica ♂ showed a specific pattern of T. lenti, T. lenti and T. melanica, respectively. Thus, the pattern of segregation of morphological characteristics between species of the T. brasiliensis complex was characterized. These results highlight the importance of integrative taxonomy for the correct identification of Chagas disease vectors grouped in the T. brasiliensis complex if natural hybridization events occur.

Abstract
Chagas disease is one of the most important vector-borne diseases in Latin America, including Mexico. Recently, autochthonous cases have also been detected in the United States of America. It is suspected that two subspecies of Triatoma rubida (Uhler), T. r. sonoriana (Usinger) and T. r. uhleri (Usinger), considered efficient vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi Chagas in Mexico, could interbreed and potentially generate offspring with superior biological characteristics. In this study, the biological parameters of T. r. sonoriana, T. r. uhleri and their laboratory hybrids were evaluated. Hybrids of the two subspecies surpassed both parental subspecies, T. r. sonoriana and T. r. uhleri, in three (numbers of required blood meals to molt [16-20], feeding [10.5-17 min] and defecation times [˂1 min post-feeding]) of nine studied biological parameters. Moreover, the hybrids surpassed T. r. uhleri in two additional parameters, development time (298 d) and mortality (39-42%). Both the hybrid and the two parental cohorts had comparable results in the remaining four (onset of feeding, number of obtained females, number of eggs laid, and eclosion rate) of nine studied parameters. Thus, we conclude that hybrid vigor could result in an increased risk of T. cruzi transmission to humans and animals.

Abstract
We focused on the analysis of biological parameters of two different abundant populations of Dipetalogaster maximus (Uhler) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) from northwestern Mexico. The biological parameters were related to hatching of eggs, life cycle, and meal needed for molting by each instar of two populations from environmentally similar areas (El Fandango and San Dionisio) with a similar number of available hosts as blood meal sources. The D. maximus populations from the two locations were evaluated and compared. No significant differences (P>0.05) were recorded for the average hatching time of the two cohorts. The median egg-to-adult development time and the number of blood meals at each nymphal group were significantly shorter (P<0.05) for the El Fandango cohort. The number of obtained females at the end of the cycles, number of eggs laid, and rate of egg hatching were significantly higher (P<0.05) for the El Fandango cohort. These results contribute to the estimation of abundances of the studied populations of D. maximus in areas where many tourists go for camping and have an increased risk of being bitten and infected by this species.

Abstract
The first record of Triatoma lecticularia out of its reported distribution area together with the brief description of the said area is provided in this paper. In addition, some biological parameters related to hatching of eggs, life cycle and feeding and defecation behaviors for each instar of one population of T. lecticularia from its previously reported distribution area (PR) and for each instar of that introduced recently found population (IS) of this species were evaluated and compared. Twenty-eight specimens were collected from IS, mostly (64.29%) from peridomestic areas (mainly chicken coops). No significant (p>0.05) differences were recorded between the two studied cohorts in their average time to hatch, which was close to 19days. The median egg-to-adult development time, the number of blood meals at each nymphal, the instar mortality rates and median time-lapse for beginning of feeding were significantly (p<0.05) shorter for the IS cohort. Median feeding time was higher in PR. Defecation delay was shorter than 10min in both studied cohorts. Given these results, the introduced recently found population of T. lecticularia could be considered an important potential vector of Trypanosoma cruzi to human populations and could replace main triatomine species on its new distribution area.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hybrids from species and subspecies of Mexican triatomines have shown outstanding biological and behavioral characteristics as compared with their parental groups. This could lead to an increasing risk of transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi to human and animal reservoir hosts. OBJECTIVE To describe and compare biological parameters related to the life cycle of Triatoma recurva, Meccus phyllosomus phyllosomus and their laboratory hybrids and estimate their risk as transmitters of T. cruzi to humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS We kept a cohort of each one of the three groups (T. recurva, M. p. phyllosomus and their hybrids) under similar laboratory conditions and then compared them to record the data related to their life cycles, number of blood meals to molt, mortality rates, egg eclosion rates and female fecundity. RESULTS The hybrid cohort showed the lowest mean time from first-instar nymph to adult (136.6 ± 17.5 days). The number of blood meals from molt to next instar (13.4 ± 1.7; 15.6 ± 5.2) was higher in the hybrid and T. recurva cohorts. The hybrid cohort showed the lowest mortality rate (29.5%) and the highest rate (70%) of adult females at the end of the biological cycle. Fecundity per day per female (range: 1.1 ± 0.6- 1.6 ± 0.7 eggs) was similar in the three cohorts. Egg hatching rate was higher than 70% in both hybrid and M. p. phyllosomus cohorts. CONCLUSION The hybrid cohort showed some outstanding biological characteristics, which would entail a higher risk of transmission of T. cruzi to hosts than their parentals.
