Adsorption of Co(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and U(VI) from Aqueous Solutions using Polyaniline/Graphene Oxide Composites

Carbon Based Polymeric Nanocomposites for Dye Adsorption: Synthesis, Characterization, and Application

Agglomeration and restacking can reduce graphene oxide (GO) activity in a wide range of applications. Herein, GO was synthesized by a modified Hummer's method. To minimize restacking and agglomeration, in situ chemical oxidation polymerization was carried out to embed polyaniline (PANI) chains at the edges of GO sheets, to obtain GO-PANI nanocomposite. The GO-PANI was tested for the adsorptive removal of brilliant green (BG) from an aqueous solution through batch mode studies. Infrared (FT-IR) analysis revealed the dominance of hydroxyl and carboxylic functionalities over the GO-PANI surface. Solution pH-dependent BG uptake was observed, with maximum adsorption at pH 7, and attaining equilibrium in 30 min. The adsorption of BG onto GO-PANI was fit to the Langmuir isotherm, and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (q_m) of 142.8 mg/g. An endothermic adsorption process was observed. Mechanistically, π-π stacking interaction and electrostatic interaction played a critical role during BG adsorption on GO-PANI.

Graphene oxide edge grafting of polyaniline nanocomposite: an efficient adsorbent for methylene blue and methyl orange

Polyaniline (PANI) chains were grafted at the edge of graphene oxide (GO) sheets by in-situ chemical oxidation polymerization. The obtained GO-PANI composite was used for the adsorption of cationic methylene blue (MB) and anionic methyl orange (MO) dyes from aqueous solutions. The structure of the GO-PANI composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic micrograph (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and zeta potentials. GO-PANI exhibited a high adsorption capacity for MB (962 mg/g) and MO (885 mg/g) compared with other reported absorbents, which was due to adsorption through strong π-π stacking and anion-cation interactions. The nanocomposite could be recycled five times without significant loss in removal abilities for MB (87.8%) and MO (75.0%), respectively. GO-PANI composite is a promising adsorbent for the adsorption of anionic and cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Facile fabrication of superparamagnetic graphene/polyaniline/Fe3O4 nanocomposites for fast magnetic separation and efficient removal of dye

Using graphene as adsorbent for removal of pollutants from polluted water is commonly recognized to be costly because the graphene is usually produced by a very complex process. Herein, a simple and eco-friendly method was employed to fabricate efficient superparamagnetic graphene/polyaniline/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites for removal of dyes. The exfoliation of graphite as nanosheets and the functionalization of nanosheets with polyaniline and Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were simultaneously achieved via a one-pot reaction process combining the intercalation polymerization of aniline and the co-precipitation of the residual Fe³⁺ and the generated Fe²⁺. The obtained graphene/polyaniline/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites exhibited excellent adsorption performance for Congo red, even in the presence of Brilliant green. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were well fitted with pseudo second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. In a word, this method is simple and industrially feasible, which provides a new approach to fabricate highly efficient graphene-based adsorbents on large scale for removal of dyes. In addition, it also can be used to exfoliate other two-dimensional materials, such as boron nitride, carbon nitride and MoS₂ for a range of possible applications.

Highly efficient simultaneous ultrasonic-assisted adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu (II) ions from aqueous solutions by graphene oxide modified with 2,2'-dipyridylamine: Central composite design optimization

In present work, a graphene oxide chemically modified with 2,2'-dipyridylamine (GO-DPA), was synthesized by simple, fast and low-cost process for the simultaneous adsorption of four toxic heavy metals, Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), from aqueous solutions. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, SEM and AFM measurements. The effects of variables such as pH solution, initial ion concentrations, adsorbent dosage and sonicating time were investigated on adsorption efficiency by rotatable central composite design. The optimum conditions, specified as 8mg of adsorbent, 20mgL(-1) of each ion at pH 5 and short time of 4min led to the achievement of a high adsorption capacities. Ultrasonic power had important role in shortening the adsorption time of ions by enhancing the dispersion of adsorbent in solution. The adsorption kinetic studies and equilibrium isotherms for evaluating the mechanism of adsorption process showed a good fit to the pseudo-second order and Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities (Qm) of this adsorbent were 369.749, 257.201, 180.893 and 358.824mgg(-1) for lead, cadmium, nickel and copper ions, respectively. The removal performance of adsorbent on the real wastewater samples also showed the feasibility of adsorbent for applying in industrial purposes.

Facile synthesis of a polythiophene/TiO2 particle composite in aqueous medium and its adsorption performance for Pb(ii)
