Congenital poikiloderma with unusual hypopigmentation and acral blistering at birth

Congenital poikiloderma is an uncommon hereditary disorder. It has been reported in association with various syndrome. No case has previously been reported from this environment. We report a case of congenital poikiloderma in a two and a half year old female Nigerian associated with unusual generalised hypopigmentation and acral blisters at birth. The child subsequently developed macular hyperpigmentation on an erythematous background and atrophy of the skin. Although she had some features which were suggestive of Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (RTS), the presence of hypopigmentation at birth, along with acral blistering, was noted to be peculiar to this child. We, therefore, feel that this case presents a distinct variant of congenital poikiloderma that has not been described previously.

Penetrating eye injuries in children in Ibadan

A retrospective study was carried out on 60 children under 12 years of age with penetrating eye injuries. This formed 28.7% of all penetrating eye injuries seen in the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Corneal lacerations extending to the limbus was the main type of injury occurring in 65% of the patients. In all, 63% of the patient were males. Visual outcomes was poor in this age group with only 19.3% (11 patients) retaining good vision of 6/12 or better.

Diagnosis of ocular disease in Ibadan by ultrasound

15 patients with ocular disease, in whom views of posterior segment of the eyes could not be obtained underwent ultrasonography of the eyes to aid in the diagnosis and further management of the patients. In some cases the ultrasound was then compared with the histological diagnosis when the eye was removed and in other cases to the ophthalmoscopic examination when a better view of the posterior segment could be obtained. This was done as a pilot study to ascertain the level of accuracy of our ultrasonic diagnosis and how much it could be depended upon for the very important decision of removal of the eye when indicated.
