Functional characterization of a Cold-In place-Recycled pavement at different stages of the curing process

Cold-In place-Recycled (CIR) pavements are an environmentally friendly option for road rehabilitation operations on aged pavements. These pavements are generally employed as base layers, and a surface treatment is performed on them. However, the design of new additives and enhancements in the technique for constructing CIR pavements have enabled such pavements to be used as wearing courses in some cases. In this context, research on the functional characteristics of CIR pavements is required for characterizing their performance and, therefore, broaden their knowledge and use as a noise mitigation measure. The aim of this study is to analyze some of these functional characteristics: tire/pavement sound levels, texture, and dynamic stiffness. An experimental test track section was evaluated during the pavement curing process (very short term) by means of laboratory and field auscultation. Different measurement campaigns were conducted at different stages of the pavement curing process. According to our results, the changes in the pavement during curing lead to higher tire/pavement sound levels due to the evolution of the dynamic stiffness of the pavement. The increase in tire/pavement noise levels is mainly located at the peak frequencies (800-1250 Hz) of the sound spectra, with values from 76.2 dB(A) to 81.5 dB(A) at 800 Hz. The differences among the mean values of the macrotexture (Mean Profile Depth - MPD) do not explain the different overall tire/pavement noise levels measured at the different stages of curing. However, the texture spectrum undergoes an evolution. The initial texture levels, with wavelengths between 100 mm and 500 mm decrease during the curing process.

Emergence of chaos in starlike networks of dissipative nonlinear oscillators by localized parametric excitations

We study the effectiveness of locally controlling the impulse transmitted by parametric periodic excitations at inducing and suppressing chaos in starlike networks of driven damped pendula, leading to asynchronous chaotic states and equilibria, respectively. We found that the inducing (suppressor) effect of increasing (decreasing) the impulse transmitted by the parametric excitations acting on particular nodes depends strongly on their number and degree of connectivity as well as the coupling strength. Additionally, we provide a theoretical analysis explaining the basic physical mechanisms of the emergence and suppression of chaos as well as the main features of the chaos-control scenario. Our findings constitute proof of the impulse-induced control of chaos in a simple model of complex networks, thus opening the way to its application to real-world networks.

Well-behaved dynamics in a dissipative nonideal periodically kicked rotator

Well-behaved dynamical properties are found in a dissipative kicked rotator subjected to a periodic string of asymmetric pulses of finite amplitude and width. The stability boundaries of the equilibrium are determined to arbitrary approximation for trigonometric pulses by means of circular harmonic balance, and to first approximation for general elliptic pulses by means of an elliptic harmonic balance method. The bifurcation behavior at the stability boundaries is determined numerically. We show how the extension of the instability region of the equilibrium in pulse parameter space reaches a maximum as the pulse width is varied. We also characterize the dependence of the mean duration of the transients to the equilibrium on the pulse width. The evolution of the basins of attraction of chaotic attractors when solely the pulse width is varied is characterized numerically. Finally, we show that the order-chaos route when solely the width of the pulses is altered appears to be especially rich, including different types of crises. The mechanism underlying these reshaping-induced crises is discussed with the aid of a two-dimensional map.

Bifurcations and chaos in a parametrically damped two-well Duffing oscillator subjected to symmetric periodic pulses

We study a parametrically damped two-well Duffing oscillator, subjected to a periodic string of symmetric pulses. The order-chaos threshold when altering solely the width of the pulses is investigated theoretically through Melnikov analysis. We show analytically and numerically that most of the results appear independent of the particular wave form of the pulses provided that the transmitted impulse is the same. By using this property, the stability boundaries of the stationary solutions are determined to first approximation by means of an elliptic harmonic balance method. Finally, the bifurcation behavior at the stability boundaries is determined numerically.
