Hyperparameter Optimization with Genetic Algorithms and XGBoost: A Step Forward in Smart Grid Fraud Detection

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the combination of Genetic Algorithms (GA) and XGBoost, a well-known machine-learning model. The primary emphasis lies in hyperparameter optimization for fraud detection in smart grid applications. The empirical findings demonstrate a noteworthy enhancement in the model's performance metrics following optimization, particularly emphasizing a substantial increase in accuracy from 0.82 to 0.978. The precision, recall, and AUROC metrics demonstrate a clear improvement, indicating the effectiveness of optimizing the XGBoost model for fraud detection. The findings from our study significantly contribute to the expanding field of smart grid fraud detection. These results emphasize the potential uses of advanced metaheuristic algorithms to optimize complex machine-learning models. This work showcases significant progress in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of fraud detection systems in smart grids.

Modeling and implementation of a low-cost IoT-smart weather monitoring station and air quality assessment based on fuzzy inference model and MQTT protocol

The automatic weather system serves to inform farmers, tourists, planners, and others with precise information to help them take the appropriate action. Today, with the advancement of smart technologies, the system has evolved into many sensing methods to gather real-time climate data. This article investigates the modeling and implementation of a low-cost weather station device that also functions to measure air quality. The proposed system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) allows access to real-time climate data for a given area. This system monitors environmental conditions such as ambient temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, altitude, and levels of harmful atmospheric gases like CO2 and NO2. This real-time telemetry device uses MQ-135, DHT-11 and BMP280 sensors to gather data. The ESP32 board processes the obtained data from all sensors. Additionally, we present a model for a fuzzy inference system (FIS) that performs parameter categorization using a reasoning procedure and incorporates the results into an air quality index (AQI) that describes the levels of pollution for Al Hoceima city. The FIS takes CO2 and NO2 values as input and returns the AQI. The AQI for Al Hoceima city is categorized into six levels: Excellent, Good, Regular, Bad, Dangerous, and Very Dangerous. Furthermore, the suggested system's block hardware employs the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol to broadcast collected data to a mobile and web application via the Internet. The suggested IoT-embedded device was tested in real life, and the results were promising.

Towards Using Graph Analytics for Tracking Covid-19

Graph analytics are now considered the state-of-the-art in many applications of communities detection. The combination between the graph's definition in mathematics and the graphs in computer science as an abstract data structure is the key behind the success of graph-based approaches in machine learning. Based on graphs, several approaches have been developed such as shortest path first (SPF) algorithms, subgraphs extraction, social media analytics, transportation networks, bioinformatic algorithms, etc. While SPF algorithms are widely used in optimization problems, Spectral clustering (SC) algorithms have overcome the limits of the most state-of-art approaches in communities detection. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a graph-based approach of communities detection in the novel coronavirus Covid-19 countries' datasets. The motivation behind this work is to overcome the limitations of multiclass classification, as SC is an unsupervised clustering algorithm, there is no need to predefine the output clusters as a preprocessing step. Our proposed approach is based on a previous contribution on an automatic estimation of the k number of the output clusters. Based on dynamic statistical data for more than 200 countries, each cluster is supposed to group countries having similar behaviors of Covid-19 propagation.
