Abstract
El impacto negativo del estrés por calor (EC) en la ganadería lechera repercute en cuantiosas pérdidas económicas a nivel mundial, dado que reduce la producción de leche, la eficiencia reproductiva y la vida productiva de las vacas. Adicionalmente, el mejoramiento genético continuo resulta en vacas muy productivas, pero menos tolerantes al EC debido a que producen mayor calor metabólico. Esto en conjunto con el calentamiento global convertirá al EC en un reto difícil de controlar para la industria lechera. Como respuesta dependiente del grado de EC, el ganado lechero realiza una serie de ajustes fisiológicos, metabólicos y conductuales como mecanismos de termorregulación para disipar el exceso de calor corporal y reducir la producción endógena del mismo, todo dirigido a mantener la normotermia. Sin embargo, la secreción láctea y la fertilidad se reducen por efecto directo de la hipertermia e indirectamente por la reducción en el consumo de nutrientes dietéticos. Los consumos de alimento y de agua están asociados estrechamente con la reducción de la productividad en ganado lechero expuesto a EC. Cabe mencionar que el impacto del EC en la productividad del ganado lechero varía entre razas, siendo las razas Bos taurus menos tolerantes al EC, particularmente la raza Holstein. Actualmente, se investiga en la identificación de genes asociados con la termotolerancia, los cuales son empleados en programas de selección por marcadores genéticos para producir vacas altas productoras de leche en climas cálidos. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de esta revisión es hacer un análisis comprensivo de los efectos del EC sobre la producción de leche, activación de mecanismos de termorregulación y conducta de ingesta en ganado lechero.

Abstract
Las temperaturas elevadas registradas durante la época de verano en las regiones cálidas comprometen la capacidad reproductiva de los animales domésticos. En carneros, el estrés por calor (EC) causa en el organismo una serie de ajustes fisiológicos, metabólicos, endocrinos y moleculares con el objeto de mantener normotermia y sobrevivir; sin embargo, varios de estos cambios se asocian negativamente con su fertilidad, principalmente los endocrinos. El EC en carneros provoca una disminución en las concentraciones sanguíneas de testosterona a través de diferentes mecanismos, y esto se refleja negativamente en el proceso de espermatogénesis y en la conducta sexual. En consecuencia, los carneros estresados por calor presentan baja calidad seminal y apetito sexual; a nivel de espermatozoides se ha observado daño estructural y en el ADN. Dada esta situación, se recomienda el uso de estrategias de mitigación del EC durante el verano en las explotaciones ovinas de regiones cálidas, tales como el uso de sombras en corrales, la administración de antioxidantes o modificaciones en la alimentación. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este documento es revisar el conocimiento actual en relación al efecto del EC sobre la capacidad de termorregulación y reproductiva de los carneros, así como la aplicación de estrategias para su mitigación.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of seasonal heat stress (HS) on productive performance, physiological responses, metabolism, and hematological profile of hair breed male lambs finished in feedlot. Twenty Dorper × Katahdin male lambs (body weight = 34.6 ± 1.4 kg and age = 4.5 months) were housed in individual pens and exposed to environmental conditions of summer HS (n = 10, temperature = 28.3 ± 4.0 °C and THI = 77.2 ± 5.4 units) or winter thermoneutrality (n = 10, temperature = 19.2 ± 2.6 °C and THI = 64.0 ± 3.0 units). Each season, a 30-day feeding test was conducted to measure study variables. Compared to thermoneutral lambs, heat-stressed lambs had lower (P < 0.01) growth rate and feed efficiency without changing dry matter intake. Heat-stressed lambs presented higher (P < 0.01) rectal temperature and respiratory rate through the daytime than termoneutral lambs. On most sampling days, summer HS caused lower (P < 0.01) serum concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, total protein, urea, potassium, and thyroid hormones, but higher (P < 0.01) serum triglyceride and chlorine values. Overall serum concentrations of cortisol and insulin were unaffected by summer HS. The blood of heat-stressed lambs showed lower (P ≤ 0.03) erythrocyte and platelet counts, hemoglobin, and hematocrit, but higher (P ≤ 0.03) erythrocyte size and leucocyte count than the blood of thermoneutral lambs. In conclusion, hair breed male lambs in response to chronic conditions of summer HS had slow growth but avoided hyperthermia due to the activation of physiological, metabolic and endocrine adjustments.

Abstract
Impacts of an additional cooling event during the night on physiological and productive parameters of two breeds (B) of dairy cows under severe heat stress conditions were determined. Fifteen Holstein (H) and 15 Jersey x Holstein (JxH) cows were assigned to one of the two cooling strategies (CS), where the difference was an added 1 h cooling event during the night (i.e., 3X and 4X cooling events) with the 4X group having the added night cooling event. Maximum and minimum average temperature/humidity indices during the study were 86 and 77 units, respectively. There were no CS x B interactions for any response variable. Body condition score (BCS) was similar between CS, but H cows had higher (P<0.05) condition than JxH. There were no differences in rectal temperature due to CS or B. Respiration rate between breeds and cooling strategies were similar throughout the day. However body surface temperatures of head, thurl, right flank, and udder were higher (P<0.05) in 3X versus 4X cows, and H cows maintained a higher (P < 0.05) temperature in thurl and right flank than JxH during PM hours. Metabolites and hormone concentrations were not affected by CS, but H cows had lower (P < 0.05) triiodothyronine and higher (P < 0.05) thyroxine, than JxH. The 4X cows had higher (P<0.05) milk yield and milk energy output than 3X cows. While H cows produced more milk than JxH, the latter had higher (P < 0.05) milk component levels. In general, JxH cows were judged to have to demonstrate a more desirable physiological response and milk composition outcome than H cows. An additional night cooling event was judged to result in more desirable physiological and productive responses than in cows without this extra night cooling event under the extremely hot and dry environmental conditions during the study.

Abstract
Our aim was to evaluate the effects of progesterone supplementation after fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) on physiological and reproductive variables and serum thyroid hormone concentrations of cooled Holstein heifers during a hot summer season. Sixty-nine Holstein heifers were randomly assigned to three treatments: (1) heifers under visual estrus detection and inseminated according to AM-PM rule (n = 23; control (C)), (2) heifers subjected to FTAI after estrus synchronization using a CIDR insert (n = 24; FTAI group), and (3) heifers treated as the FTAI group plus progesterone supplementation between the day 4 and 14 post-insemination with a reused CIDR device (n = 22; FTAI+SP4 group). All heifers were cooled daily with misting and fans. Physiological variables were measured; likewise, blood samples were collected to determine serum progesterone, thyroxine, and triiodothyronine concentrations. Both respiration rate and rectal temperature were similar among treatments. Conception rate was greater (P < 0.05) in C (65.2%) and FTAI+SP4 (59.1%) heifers than in FTAI heifers (33.3%). Serum triiodothyronine and progesterone concentrations of FTAI+SP4 heifers were similar to those of C heifers but greater (P < 0.05) than those of FTAI heifers. In conclusion, progesterone supplementation post-insemination increased conception rate and serum progesterone concentrations without affecting thermoregulation capacity in Holstein heifers subjected to FTAI and cooling during a hot summer season.

Abstract
Climate change is a major world-wide challenge to livestock production because food security is likely to be compromised by increased heat stress of the animals. The objective of this study was to characterize, using bioclimatic indexes, two livestock regions located in an arid zone of México, and to use this information to predict the impact of global warming on animal production systems of these regions located in the state of Baja California (México). A 5-year database (i.e., 2011 to 2015) consisting of about one million data points from two zones (i.e., coast, valley) from four meteorological stations in the north of Baja California were used. Bioclimatic indexes were constructed for the four types of livestock production systems most common in this region, being: dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, pigs. The temperature-humidity index (THI) thresholds used to classify heat stress were determined and scaled for each livestock species as: THIbeef and THIpig 74 units; THImilk 72 units; and THIsheep 23 units. Statistical differences between indices were detected (P < 0.01) during summer for the valley and coast zones as (THIbeef = 72.9 and 51.8; THImilk = 80.6 and 67.4; THIpigs = 83.9 and 65.2; THIsheep = 29.5 and 20.1 units). Coast zone weather did not suggest vulnerability of livestock production systems to heat stress at any time of the year, but heat stress risk during summer for valley zone dairy cattle, sheep and pigs was classified as severe, but lower for feedlot cattle. Prediction models showed significant adjustment just in the coastal zone for THImilk, THIsheep, and THIsheep, suggesting more impact of global warming during summer in the coastal zone. Use of management strategies to reduce heat load of domestic animals during summer in northern Baja California is essential to maintain their productivity, with more emphasis in the valley zone.

Abstract
Twenty-two Katahdin × Dorper ewe lambs (average weight = 23.5 ± 2.8 kg) were individually housed during a 40-d feeding study and then slaughtered to evaluate effects of free ferulic acid (FA; 0 and 250 mg/kg of feed) on oxidative status, feedlot growth, carcass and non-carcass traits, wholesale cut yields and meat quality under heat stress conditions. Overall feeding FA decreased protein oxidation without affecting oxidative stress index, while growth rate and feed efficiency increased only in the hottest period (i.e., 28 to 45 °C). The FA supplementation increased kidney-pelvic-heart and mesenteric fat deposition, as well as yields of forequarter, shoulder, ribs, loin, and breast and flank, but decreased yields of hindquarter, neck, plain loin and leg. Carcass characteristics and meat quality were unaffected by FA. Overall, FA supplementation of heat-stressed hair ewe lambs enhanced feedlot performance under extreme heat stress and increased internal fat reserves, while changing muscle mass deposition, possibly because it prevented protein oxidation.

Abstract
A survey was completed to determine water use by small-scale dairy farms in Mexicali Valley of Mexico and to associate it with dairy production parameters. Mexicali Valley surrounds the capital city of the state Baja California, Mexicali. Sixty-one smallholders were interviewed in person in this rural area of northwestern Mexico. On average, small dairy holders had more than 20 years of experience and were ~ 55 years of age; people working on their farms are especially relatives. A low percentage was literate (20%), and they belong to a local dairy association. Milk yield/cow/year does not reach 4000 kg of milk and 75% of producers do not follow a defined management program for their cattle. Hand-milking is still practiced by 27% of the producers, and there is a general lack of infrastructure to maintain milk in a refrigerated state so that there is a very high risk of zoonotic diseases. Water use efficiency (WUE) was linearly correlated (P < 0.05) with total irrigated area, but not with animal production parameters. Regression equations constructed to explain WUE exhibited low adjustment, and WUE was not associated (P > 0.05) with milk yield. Small dairy producers in Mexicali Valley are in a generally poor situation with low water use practices; however, required more government support to increase their benefits from this livestock activity.

Abstract
The main cause of death in newborn lambs is hypothermia, so is necessary to identify the factors affecting variations in body surface temperatures of sheep neonates because approximately 60% of their body heat losses occur through the skin. This study aimed to establish relationships among body surface thermography from different regions with rectal temperature (RT), birth weight (BW) and climatic variables in hair breed newborn lambs during early spring in an arid region. Data of body surface temperatures measured by infrared thermography (entire head, eye, muzzle, ear, entire body, shoulder, rump, loin, right flank, belly and leg), RT and BW were collected at 0, 12 and 24 h post-lambing in 85 lambs born in early spring. Relative humidity [RH], temperature [Te] and temperature-humidity index [THI] were also recorded. RT was not correlated with surface temperatures at 0 and 24 h, but it was at 12 h with all of them (0.36 ≤ r ≤ 0.44). BW and some surface temperatures were negatively correlated at 0 and 24 h (-0.24 ≤ r ≤ -0.30), but positively at 12 h (0.25 ≤ r ≤ 0.27). All surface temperatures were positively correlated (0.51 ≤ r ≤ 0.85) with Te and THI in the three sampling times. Principal component (PC) analysis showed that PC1 explained the majority of the variance (71-72%), followed by PC2 (8-9%) at 0, 12 and 24 h. Body surface temperatures increased as Te and THI also increased, but decreased with the increase in HR. In conclusion, under early spring environment (predominantly cold), the variations in body surface temperatures of hair sheep neonates were more closely related to climatic variables than to RT and BW. Thermography proved to be an effective tool to determine body heat loss by radiation in skin of neonate lambs.

Abstract
Forty Dorper × Pelibuey sheep females were used to evaluate the effects of physiological state on physiological variables and serum concentrations of metabolites, thyroid hormones, and electrolytes under outdoor heat stress conditions. Females were selected as follows (n = 10 per group): weaning ewe lambs (WEL; 3 months old), replacement nulliparous ewes (RNE; 8 months old), non-pregnant and non-lactating multiparous ewes (NME; 3-4 years old) and lactating multiparous ewes (LME; 3-4 years old). While physiological variables were measured both morning and afternoon, blood samples were collected before feeding in the morning to determine all blood components. Three contrasts were constructed: (1) WEL vs. older ewes, (2) RNE vs. multiparous ewes, and (3) NME vs. LME. Compared with older ewes, WEL had higher (P < 0.01) rectal temperature (RT) and hair coat temperatures through the day, and also higher (P < 0.01) respiratory rate (RR) only in the afternoon. Serum levels of glucose and cholesterol were lower (P ≤ 0.02) in WEL than in older ewes. Nulliparous ewes compared with multiparous had always similar RT but higher (P ≤ 0.05) hair coat temperatures in most of the body regions by the morning and higher (P < 0.01) RR, without difference for hair coat temperatures in the afternoon. Only serum glucose (P = 0.07) and urea nitrogen (P < 0.01) levels were affected by parturition number, being lower in multiparous ewes. Regarding the effect of lactation, while RR was unaffected, afternoon RT and hair coat temperatures in most of the body regions through the day were higher (P ≤ 0.03) in lactating ewes. In addition, LME had lower (P < 0.01) serum levels of glucose, cholesterol, and urea nitrogen, but higher (P = 0.02) triiodothyronine levels than NME. In conclusion, ewe lambs and lactating ewes were less tolerant to heat stress, while nulliparous and multiparous ewes showed similar thermoregulatory ability.

Abstract
Se confinaron 10 ovejas multíparas Katahdin × Pelibuey, color blanco, no gestantes y no lactantes, para evaluar las variaciones diurnas de variables fisiológicas y concentración de algunos metabolitos sanguíneos a través de los meses calientes de verano (junio-septiembre), en una región desértica del noroeste de México. Las concentraciones de metabolitos se midieron a las 6 y 18 h y las variables fisiológicas a las 0, 6, 12 y 18 h durante cuatro días de cada mes (mediciones semanales). Los promedios para temperatura ambiental e índice de temperatura-humedad durante el verano fueron 33.6 ºC y 78.6 unidades, respectivamente, siendo agosto el mes más caliente. No cambió (P>0.05) el peso vivo y la condición corporal a través de los meses de verano. La temperatura rectal en agosto fue menor (P<0.05) entre 0 y 12 h, y mayor (P<0.05) a las 18 h comparado con los otros meses. La frecuencia respiratoria descendió (P<0.05) a las 6 h en todos los meses, pero a las 0 y 18 h fue mayor (P<0.05) en agosto que en los otros meses. Se observaron mayores (P<0.05) concentraciones de glucosa y menores (P<0.05) concentraciones de colesterol y triglicéridos en junio y julio con relación a agosto y septiembre. Se concluye que las ovejas de pelo mantienen homeotermia durante los meses de verano en regiones desérticas por cambiar el ritmo diurno de sus variables fisiológicas y metabolitos, de acuerdo con la intensidad del estrés calórico de cada mes.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of ferulic acid (FA) on reproductive tract weight (RTW), ovarian activity and serum concentrations of some metabolites and thyroid hormones of pre-pubertal hairbreed ewe lambs during the natural anestrous season. Twenty Dorper x Pelibuey crossbred ewe lambs (initial body weight = 28.5 ± 0.5 kg and age = 5.0 mo) were fed a basal diet and assigned to two treatments (n = 10) under randomized complete block design: FA supplementation to dosages of 0 (control) or 300 mg of FA/d animal-1. Females were treated with FA during 34 d and then slaughtered to evaluate RTW and ovary. Blood samples were collected at days 1 and 34 to determine serum concentrations of metabolites (i.e. glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, urea and total protein) and thyroid hormones. Final weight, dry matter intake, and serum concentrations of metabolites (except glucose) and thyroid hormones were unaltered by FA. Compared to control, FA-fed ewe lambs had lower (P = 0.05) serum glucose level but higher (P ≤ 0.05) RTW, ovarian mass, number of larger follicles and corpus luteum (CL). While percentage of ewe lambs with small follicles and number of small follicles per female did not vary, percentage of ewe lambs with large follicles and CL increased (P = 0.02) with FA. In conclusion, FA supplementation improves the reproductive tract development and ovarian activity of pre-pubertal hairbreed ewe lambs during the natural anestrous season. An improvement in functionality of the glucose-insulin system could be related with this benefic effect of FA.

Abstract
Nutritional requirements of sheep during late gestation increase as a consequence of high fetal growth, mammary tissue development and colostrum synthesis. While prepartum energy supplementation is a nutritional strategy to improve lamb postnatal performance in thermoneutral environments, this has not been studied under heat stress. This study aimed to evaluate effects of maternal energy supplementation during the last third of pregnancy on post-weaning feedlot performance and thermoregulation capacity of heat-stressed male lambs born from multiple births. Twenty Dorper x Pelibuey entire male lambs with initial body weight of 18.2 ± 0.4 kg, aged 2.7 mo (weaned) and born in multiple pregnancies were used in a 32 d feeding study. Treatments were based in the prenatal origin of the lambs: 1) ewes fed 100 (n = 10, Control) and 2) 125% (n = 10, Supplemented) of metabolizable energy requirements from day 100 of gestation to lambing. Lambs were housed outdoor in individual pens under summer environment conditions in an arid region (temperature = 36 ± 4.4 °C and temperature-humidity index = 81 ± 3.9 units). Overall feedlot performance was not affected by pre-partum maternal feeding, although lower (P = 0.04) growth rate and feed efficiency occurred during the last 8 d of the study in lambs born from supplemented ewes. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate and hair coat temperature during daytime were unaffected by prepartum supplementation. Serum concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, urea, total protein and thyroid hormones were similar between lambs born from control and supplemented ewes. It is concluded that, in hair sheep breeds, prepartum energy supplementation did not alter overall post-weaning productive performance and thermoregulation capacity of heat-stressed male lambs that were born in multiple pregnancies.

Abstract
To evaluate the effects of pre- and post-conception undernutrition (UN) on fetal and placental development at mid-gestation, 28 Katahdin × Pelibuey multiparous ewes were blocked by weight and assigned to the following four dietary treatments (n = 7 each): ewes fed 100% (control) or 60% of their nutritional requirements 30 days before mating (UNPre), 50 days after mating (UNPost) or during both periods (UNB). Four twin-bearing ewes were selected per treatment at day 50 post-conception and then slaughtered at day 75 of gestation to analyze their fetuses. Control fetuses were heavier (P < 0.05) than UNPost and UNB fetuses in 14.6 and 9.4%, respectively. Organ weights as percentage of the fetal weight (except for liver) and morphometric measurements (except for abdominal girth) were similar between control and UN fetuses (UNPre, UNPost, and UNB). Placental mass was heavier (P < 0.05) in control ewes than UNB ewes, but not relative to ewes of other treatments. The number of placentomes per ewe and placental efficiency were unaffected by UN treatments. Compared to control, only UNB ewes exhibited variations (P < 0.05) in the proportion of placentomes, specifically for type A (+13.8%) and B (-12.6%). Placentomes of type A and B had lower weight, length, and width of placentas in UNPost and UNB ewes than placentas of control ewes (P < 0.05). Overall results indicate that fetal and placental development of ewes carrying twins is mainly altered when nutritional restriction occurs simultaneously before conception and during the first third of pregnancy.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la respuesta fisiológica, endócrina y productiva en vacas lactantes sometidas a varias series de enfriamiento artificial al inicio de verano (junio a julio de 2011). Se asignaron 14 vacas Holstein multíparas a uno de dos tratamientos: enfriamiento (E) antes de la ordeña (0700 y 1700 h) y enfriamiento adicional (EA) cada 2 h de 0700 a 1700 h en el corral de espera a la ordeña. Se midió la producción de leche (PL), niveles de prolactina (PRL) e IGF1, mientras que la temperatura rectal y frecuencia respiratoria fueron registradas y consideradas como indicadores fisiológicos de estrés por calor. La temperatura ambiental y humedad relativa también fueron registradas y utilizadas para calcular el índice de temperatura-humedad (ITH). Los indicadores de estrés calórico mostraron una interacción significativa (P<0.001) entre tratamiento y tiempo/semana, los cuales fueron menores con EA (-3.8 respiraciones por minuto y -0.2 °C) sólo durante las semanas 6 y 7. Los niveles séricos de PRL fueron mayores bajo enfriamiento adicional (EA: 35.1 vs E: 29.4 ng/ml; P=0.004), mientras que los de IGF1 solo variaron a través de las semanas de muestreo (P=0.014). La PL se incrementó (P<0.05) en EA durante las semanas 6 (+3.1kg/día) y 7 (+3.1 kg/día). Se concluye que la mayor frecuencia de baños mitigó la condición de estrés calórico al inicio de verano, permitiéndole a la vaca expresar un mejor desempeño productivo al final del estudio, ya que dicho efecto dependió de la variable tiempo/semana.

Abstract
Twenty Dorper × Pelibuey primiparous ewes were used to evaluate effects of seasonal ambient heat stress (i.e., spring vs. summer) on physiological and metabolic responses under production conditions in an arid region. Ten ewes experiencing summer heat stress (i.e., temperature = 34.8 ± 4.6 °C; THI = 81.6 ± 3.2 units) and 10 under spring thermoneutral conditions (temperature = 24.2 ± 5.4 °C; THI = 68.0 ± 4.8 units) were corralled together to measure rectal temperature, respiratory frequency, and skin temperatures at 0600, 1200, 1800, and 2400 h on four occasions over 40 days. Blood metabolite and electrolyte concentrations were also measured at 0600 and 1800 hours. Data were analyzed with a completely randomized design using repeated measurements in time. Rectal and skin temperatures, as well as respiratory frequency, were higher (P < 0.01) in summer than spring at all measured days. Blood serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and chlorine concentrations were lower (P < 0.01) in summer than spring at 0800 and 1800 hours. In contrast, summer heat stress increased (P < 0.01) blood urea and potassium concentrations at 0800 and 1800 hours. Compared with spring thermoneutral conditions, summer heat stress affected the physiological and metabolic status of hair breed ewes in an arid region, which included blood metabolite and electrolyte adjustments to efficiently cope with summer heat stress.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of progesterone supplementation at two different times on serum progesterone (P4 ) concentration, conception rate and resynchronization of cooled Holstein heifers in summer, 90 heifers were randomly assigned to two groups: (i) heifers subjected to TAI (timed artificial insemination) and progesterone supplementation from days 4 to 14 after TAI (S1; n = 45); and (ii) heifers under the same TAI protocol as S1 and progesterone supplementation from days 17 to 22 after TAI (S2 ; n = 45). The groups S1 and S2 were cooled 10 days before and 21 days after TAI. Respiratory rate, body surface temperature, vaginal temperature and rectal temperature recorded during the experiment were not different (P > 0.05) between S1 and S2 groups. Progesterone concentration was not different (P > 0.05) in S1 compared to S2 . The conception rates on days 30 and 55 were similar between groups (P > 0.05). Progesterone supplementation did not increase either conception rate or concentrations of P4 in heifers during the summer. Heifers not pregnant to first service in the group S2 were resynchronized (77.7%) for a second breeding.

Abstract
Con el objetivo de determinar la conducta estral circanual de ovejas Pelibuey bajo condiciones áridas del noroeste de México (32º LN), 22 ovejas adultas se mantuvieron en condiciones estabuladas con una alimentación constante durante un año. Diariamente, mañana y tarde, el grupo de ovejas fue expuesto a uno de tres machos provistos de mandil para detectar estro. El porcentaje de ovejas en estro y su duración se calcularon en forma mensual. Las medias anuales de temperatura, humedad relativa e índice de temperatura-humedad fueron de 25.8±8.4 ºC, 33.1±11.2 % y 72.0±8.8 unidades, respectivamente. El porcentaje mensual de ovejas en estro fue menor (P<0.05) de enero a junio que de julio a diciembre. El 100 % de las ovejas presentaron estro en cada mes de julio a diciembre (P>0.05). Comparado con el resto de los meses; un mayor (P<0.05) porcentaje de ovejas mostraron estros cortos (<24h) en febrero y marzo, y contrariamente, la proporción de ovejas con estros largos (>36 y <48h) fue mayor (P<0.05) en junio y agosto. En conclusión, en condiciones áridas del noroeste de México, las ovejas Pelibuey disminuyen su actividad estral de enero a junio, y las elevadas temperaturas ambientales de verano no son un factor que afecte la presencia de estro en dicha raza.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to describe the behavioural, ovarian and hormonal characteristics of the oestrous cycle of Criollo cattle. Twenty-two cycling cows subjected to oestrus synchronisation were used to take blood samples every 4 h, to determine luteinising hormone (LH) until ovulation was detected by ultrasound and then every 24 h until the subsequent naturally occurring ovulation to determine progesterone concentrations. At the onset of synchronised oestrus, ovaries were examined by ultrasound every 8 h to determine dominant follicles until ovulation was detected, and daily afterwards to observe ovarian dynamics until the onset of the subsequent spontaneous behavioural oestrus. Time from oestrus to ovulation was higher in synchronised than in spontaneous oestrus (P < 0.01). Time from LH surge to ovulation was 40.5 h. When two- and three-wave cycles were compared, inter-ovulatory intervals were similar, growth rate of the preovulatory follicle was lower in two-wave cycles, time from onset of ovulatory wave to ovulation was higher in cycles with two waves and time from oestrus to ovulation was higher in three-wave cycles (P < 0.01). Corpus luteum volume averaged 1.3 cm3 and progesterone concentration peaked at an average 6.5 ng/mL. LH peak averaged 33.5 ng/mL during oestrus in all cows. Ovulatory follicle diameter ranged from 8 to 12 mm in either two- or three-wave cycles. Results suggested that overall times from oestrus and LH peak to ovulation are longer in Criollo cows than those in other breeds. This, along with information about growth rate, size and age of ovulatory follicles, may have implications for reviewing the optimum time for artificial insemination and how reproductive technologies are applied to Criollo cattle.

Abstract
Heat stress generates a significant economic impact for the dairy industry in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, so that heat abatement is an important issue for dairy producers. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of two short-term cooling periods on physiological and productive status of lactating Holstein cows during hot ambient temperatures. Thirty-nine multiparous cows were blocked by milk yield and assigned to one of three treatments including: control group (C), cows cooled before milking time (0500 and 1700 h daily, 1 h cooling); AM group, cows cooled at 1000 h and before milking (2 h cooling); and AM + PM group, cows cooled at 1100, 1500 and 2200 h, as well as before milking (4 h cooling). The cooling system was placed in the holding pen which the cows were moved through for cooling. Respiratory rate, and temperatures of thurl and right flank, were lower (P < 0.05) in cows from the AM + PM group than AM and C cows during the morning and afternoon. However, udder temperature was higher in the AM + PM group compared to AM and C groups during the afternoon, although lower than the AM group during the morning. Rectal temperature was similar in all groups. Thyroxin concentrations tended (P < 0.10) to be lower in AM + PM relative to the AM and C groups. The AM + PM group had higher (P < 0.05) milk production than C (18.70 vs. 17.43 kg, respectively), and AM + PM cows had a trend (P < 0.10) to increased milk energy output vs. the C and AM groups (13.75 vs. 13.18 and 13.15 Mcal, respectively). Protein and fat in milk, body condition score, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and triiodothyronine were similar among the groups. Four hours of cooling with spray and fans during severe summer temperatures only modestly improved milk yield of lactating Holstein cows.

Abstract
Fertility of lactating dairy cows is associated with reduced progesterone (P4) concentration compared with nonlactating animals. The objective of the current study was to determine whether P4 during growth of the first follicular wave (FFW) affects embryo quality. Lactating Holstein cows at 33±3 days post partum were allocated to one of three treatments. Cows in the FFW and FFW with P4 (FFWP) treatments started the superstimulation protocol on day 1 of the estrous cycle and second follicular wave (SFW) cows started the superstimulation protocol on estrous cycle day 7. Cows were superstimulated with 400 mg of NIH-FSH-P1 (FSH) given twice daily for 5 days, two prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) injections given with the ninth and tenth injections of FSH, GNRH given 48 h after the first PGF2α injection, and timed insemination 12 and 24 h after the GNRH injection. Cows in the FFWP treatment received two intravaginal P4 inserts during the superstimulation. Embryos were recovered 6.5 days after artificial insemination and excellent/good and fair embryos were frozen and transferred. Blood was sampled daily from estrous cycle day 0 until insemination from donor cows. During the superstimulation protocol, P4 was (P<0.01) greatest for SFW cows followed by FFWP and FFW cows respectively. The percentage of embryos–oocytes from SFW and FFWP cows classified as excellent/good and fair embryos was (P=0.02) greater than those of FFW cows. Pregnancy per embryo transfer was not (P≥0.73) affected by embryo donor treatment. Reduced embryo quality of cows induced to ovulate the follicles from the first follicular wave is a consequence of reduced P4 during follicle growth.

Abstract
The effects of a cooling system on productive efficiency and welfare of Holstein steers were evaluated during the summer. Sixty steers in the finishing phase were randomly allotted to one of two treatment-groups. Animals of control group were only provided with shade (non-cooled group) and a group of animals under a cooling system were installed in the shaded area (cooled group), which were operated daily from 09am to 6pm during the 69d of the study. The averages of environmental temperature and relative humidity were 35.4°C and 35.3%, respectively, with a temperature-humidity index average of 81.4 during the study. Individual body weight was recorded every two weeks, while body surface temperature and respiratory frequency were recorded three times per week. Blood samples were biweekly taken from coccygeal vein for determination of T3 and T4. The average daily gain in the cooled group gain (1.46kg/d) was similar (P=0.21) to non-cooled group (1.37kg/d). Body surface temperature (35.9ºC vs 38.7ºC) and respiratory frequency per minute (77 vs 104) were lower (P<0.01) in the cooled group than in non-cooled group, respectively. Triiodotironine levels were similar (P=0.30) in cooled (0.80ng/mL) and non-cooled (0.87ng/mL) groups, while, tiroxine level was lower (P<0.01) in cooled group (44.0ng/mL) compared to non-cooled group (56.6ng/mL). The cooling system did not improve productive parameters but the welfare in the cooled group was increased.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of administering 500 mg of recombinant bovine somatotropin (bST) every 10 d on ovulatory responses, estrous behavior, and fertility of lactating Holstein cows. Lactating dairy cows were assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: a control with no administration of bST (73 primiparous and 120 multiparous cows) or 6 consecutive administrations of 500 mg of bST (83 primiparous and 123 multiparous cows) given subcutaneously at 10-d intervals starting 61+/-3 d postpartum (study d 0), concurrent with the initiation of the timed artificial insemination (AI). Blood samples were collected thrice weekly from 61+/-3 to 124+/-3 d in milk (DIM), and plasma samples were analyzed for concentrations of estradiol, glucose, insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1, and progesterone. The estrous cycle of cows was presynchronized with 2 injections of PGF(2alpha) at 37+/-3 and 51+/-3 DIM, and the Ovsynch timed AI protocol was initiated at 61+/-3 DIM. Ovaries were scanned to determine ovulatory responses during the Ovsynch protocol. Pregnancy was diagnosed at 33 and 66 d after AI. Body condition was scored on study d 0, 10, 42, and 76. Sixty-four cows were fitted with a pressure mounting sensor with radiotelemetric transmitters to monitor estrous behavior. Treatment of lactating dairy cows with 500 mg of bST at 10-d intervals increased yields of milk and milk components in the first 2 mo after treatment. Body condition of bST-treated cows remained unaltered, whereas control cows gained BCS. Treatment with bST increased concentrations of insulin-like growth factor 1 chronically, but concentrations of insulin and glucose increased only transiently in the first 7 d after the first injection of bST. Concentrations of progesterone during and after the Ovsynch protocol remained unaltered after treatment with bST; likewise, ovulatory responses during the Ovsynch protocol were mostly unaltered by treatment. Concentration of estradiol tended to be greater for bST cows than for control cows immediately before induction of ovulation in the Ovsynch protocol. Similarly, the mean and the peak concentrations of estradiol were greater for bST cows than for control cows when monitored during spontaneous estrus. Nevertheless, duration of estrus and the median number of standing events were less for bST cows than for control cows. Pregnancies per AI after the first and second postpartum inseminations were not affected by bST treatment. Treatment of lactating dairy cows with 500 mg of bST every 10 d improved lactation performance, but it did not affect pregnancies per AI and it reduced expression of estrus.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of supplementation of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) to the finishing diets on the feedlot performance and carcass characteristics of hair sheep ewe lambs during hot environmental conditions. Twenty Katahdin × Pelilbuey and Dorper × Pelibuey crossbred females with an average initial liveweight (LW) of 26.2 ± 0.83 kg were blocked by the initial LW, and assigned individually to 20 pens in a closed calf-rearing unit provided with fans. Treatments were (1) control group (basal diet without ZH) and (2) ZH group (basal diet plus 10 mg of ZH/ewe.day). Skin temperatures were measured each 2 days in five ewes by treatment; ambient weather conditions were recorded every day. After a 34-day feeding period, all ewes were slaughtered. Climatic variables during the study showed severe heat stress, with the average temperature–humidity index and temperature 85 units and 34.1°C, respectively. The skin temperature of belly and right flank was greater (P < 0.05) in ZH females than in control lambs. Ewe lambs fed ZH had feedlot performance, carcass length, shear force, body fat and skin percentage similar (P > 0.05) to control ewe lambs. With the exception of peritoneum and head (P < 0.05), all visceral organs had similar (P > 0.05) percentages between treatments. However, hot- and cool-carcass weights, dressing percentage, conformation and rib-eye area were greater (P < 0.05) for ewes supplemented with ZH. Likewise, the weight of hindquarter, legs and ribs expressed as a percentage of hot-carcass weight increased (P < 0.05) with ZH supplementation. Growth and deposition of excessive fat in hair-sheep ewe lambs were not improved with ZH supplementation under heat-stress conditions, whereas carcass-quality traits such as dressing and rib-eye area were increased.

Abstract
Twenty Dorper x Pelibuey male lambs were used to evaluate the effect of substitution of forage with fresh orange pulp (FOP) in diets for fattening lambs on productive behavior, nutrient intake, apparent digestibility coefficient, and feeding costs. Lambs were divided into five groups (n = 4) and then housed in individual pens during 70 d. Treatments consisted of five levels of FOP (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) which substituted buffel grass hay on the base diet (40:60%, forage:concentrate). Additionally, changes in chemical composition of FOP stored in stack during 8 d were evaluated (from the day 1 until day 8). Daily feed intake expressed as kg/day and % live weight, lamb growth rate, feeding cost of each lamb per day and per fattening period, hemicellulose intake, and DM, OM, CP, NDF and hemicellulose digestibility showed a quadratic effect (P < 0.05), while DM, OM and CP intake presented a cubic effect (P < 0.05) with the increasing level of FOP. The maximum estimated value for those variables was observed at 75% of hay replacement with FOP. With respect to changes in chemical composition of pulp stored, DM content increased (P = 0.0011) from 210 to 310 g/kg FOP and OM, fiber fraction, and ash content were constant (P > 0.05) among storage days. Therefore, replacing around 75% of buffel grass hay with FOP in diets for fattening lambs resulted in the best growth rate and more efficient diet utilization. Fresh orange pulp stored in a stack did not change its chemical composition, and did not affect its utilization as a sheep feedstuff.

Abstract
Las altas temperaturas afectan la reproducción del ganado bovino reduciendo la intensidad del estro y la fertilidad. Basado en lo anterior el objetivo del estudio fue evaluar los efectos de la inseminación artificial (IA) a tiempo fijo más un período corto de enfriamiento ambiental sobre la tasa de concepción y respuesta fisiológica de vaquillas bajo estrés calórico. Noventa vaquillas Holstein fueron distribuidas aleatoriamente en uno de los siguientes tratamientos: Un tratamiento testigo (T1) con detección visual de estro e IA mañana-tarde (n= 30); un segundo tratamiento (T2) bajo un protocolo de IA a tiempo fijo (n= 30) y un tercer tratamiento (T3) con el mismo protocolo de IA de T2 más un período de enfriamiento ambiental (ventilación y aspersión) de las vaquillas 11 d antes y 21 d después de la IA (n= 30). Abstract
We describe a 12-year-old boy in whom primary Staphylococcus aureus thrombophlebitis of the femoral and iliac veins developed without history of trauma and with no association with acute osteomyelitis. The patient responded to therapy with intravenously administered antibiotics for 6 weeks, although oxacillin-associated hepatitis developed during the course of treatment.
