Production of a nascent cellulosic material from vegetable waste: Synthesis, characterization, functional properties, and its potency for a cationic dye removal

The present work reports the production of cellulose nanocrystals, CNC₃₀ and CNC₆₀, developed using vegetable waste, i.e., bottle gourd peel through sulfuric acid hydrolysis with a 30 and 60 min hydrolysis process coupled with ultrasonication. The FTIR confirmed the absence of hemicellulose and lignin, and XRD confirmed the crystallinity of the cellulose nanocrystals. DLS studies indicated the hydrodynamic diameter of CNC₃₀ and CNC₆₀ to be 195.5 nm and 192.2 nm, respectively. The TEM image and SAED pattern established the shape of CNC₆₀ to be spherical, with an average particle size of 38.32 nm. CNC₆₀ possessed lesser negative potential and higher thermal stability than CNC₃₀, possibly due to the demolition of the crystalline regions containing sulfate groups. The functional properties, such as swelling power, water, and oil holding capacities of CNC₆₀, were superior to that of CNC₃₀. The adsorption batch parameters yielded 95.68 % methylene dye removal by CNC₆₀ against the predicted value of 96.16 % by the RSM-PSO hybrid approach. The analyses of adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters revealed the nature of the adsorbed layer and adsorption mechanism. Overall observations recommend that CNC₆₀ could be a good and potent functional agent in paper technology, food technology, water treatment, and biomedical applications.

Isolation, process optimisation and characterisation of the protein from the de-oiled cake flour of Madhuca latifolia

This work reports the isolation of the protein from the flour of an underutilised agro waste, a de-oiled cake of Madhuca latifolia using the bis (2-ethylehexyl) sodium sulfosuccinate salt reverse micelle and the characterisation of the protein through various techniques. The experimental conditions for the extraction were optimised using Box-Behnken design. The highest yield of the protein was achieved when the extraction parameters, i.e. KCl concentration, KCl amount, and pH of the medium, were 0.5 M, 1.25 ml, and 9.02, respectively. The experimental yield (75.56%) obtained under the optimised conditions matched extremely well with the predicted yield (75.19%). The analysis of the biochemical composition envisaged the occurrence of 2S albumin, 7S globulin, and 11S globulin as the major components in the protein. The X-ray diffraction pattern supported the β-sheets structure of the protein. The imaging of the protein through a scanning electron microscope revealed the shape and surface of the protein to be spherical and smooth, respectively. Thus, the protein isolate of the de-oiled cake flour of Madhuca latifolia could be utilised towards food product development and relevant fields.

Thermoluminescence characteristics of sodium chloride salt-stressed Indian mustard seedlings

The thermoluminescence (TL) parameters in the intact leaves and the thylakoids isolated from leaves of NaCl treated seedlings showed different patterns of change. NaCl treatment brings about a destabilization of QA and QB, leading to a decrease in Q and B bands in the leaves. However, the Q and B band intensity of isolated thylakoids increased in NaCl-treated seedlings. The differences in the TL intensities are described as the action of NaCl on the density of quinones per unit leaf area and on chlorophyll units in isolated thylakoids.

Increase in the intensity of thermoluminescence Q-band during leaf ageing is due to a block in the electron transfer from Q( A) to Q( B)

The thermoluminescence (TL) parameters in intact leaves and thylakoids isolated from leaves showed a different pattern of change during leaf ageing. Ageing of leaves brought about a decrease in the B-band and a simultaneous increase in the Q-band. Thylakoids showed only a decrease in the B-band. The TL bands further show that there is generation of an endogenous electron transport inhibitor during leaf ageing.
