Dental Caries diagnosis from bitewing images using convolutional neural networks

BACKGROUND

Dental caries, also known as tooth decay, is a widespread and long-standing condition that affects people of all ages. This ailment is caused by bacteria that attach themselves to teeth and break down sugars, creating acid that gradually wears away at the tooth structure. Tooth discoloration, pain, and sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks are common symptoms of tooth decay. Although this condition is prevalent among all age groups, it is especially prevalent in children with baby teeth. Early diagnosis of dental caries is critical to preventing further decay and avoiding costly tooth repairs. Currently, dentists employ a time-consuming and repetitive process of manually marking tooth lesions after conducting radiographic exams. However, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence in medical imaging research, there is a chance to improve the accuracy and efficiency of dental diagnosis.

METHODS

This study introduces a data-driven model for accurately diagnosing dental decay through the use of Bitewing radiology images using convolutional neural networks. The dataset utilized in this research includes 713 patient images obtained from the Samin Maxillofacial Radiology Center located in Tehran, Iran. The images were captured between June 2020 and January 2022 and underwent processing via four distinct Convolutional Neural Networks. The images were resized to 100 × 100 and then divided into two groups: 70% (4219) for training and 30% (1813) for testing. The four networks employed in this study were AlexNet, ResNet50, VGG16, and VGG19.

RESULTS

Among different well-known CNN architectures compared in this study, the VGG19 model was found to be the most accurate, with a 93.93% accuracy.

CONCLUSION

This promising result indicates the potential for developing an automatic AI-based dental caries diagnostic model from Bitewing images. It has the potential to serve patients or dentists as a mobile app or cloud-based diagnosis service (clinical decision support system).

Multidimensional indexing technique for medical images retrieval

Retrieving required medical images from a huge amount of images is one of the most widely used features in medical information systems, including medical imaging search engines. For example, diagnostic decision making has traditionally been accompanied by patient data (image or non-image) and previous medical experiences from similar cases. Indexing as part of search engines (or retrieval system), increases the speed of a search. The goal of this study, is to provide an effective and efficient indexing technique for medical images search engines. In this paper, in order to archive this goal, a multidimensional indexing technique for medical images is designed using the normalization technique that is used to reduce redundancy in relational database design. Data structure of the proposed multidimensional index and also different required operations are designed to create and handle such a multidimensional index. Time complexity of each operation is analyzed and also average memory space required to store any medical image (along with its related metadata) is calculated as the space complexity analysis of the proposed indexing technique. The results show that the proposed indexing technique has a good performance in terms of memory usage, as well as execution time for the usual operations. Moreover, and may be more important, the proposed indexing techniques improves the precision and recall of the information retrieval system (i.e., search engine) which uses this technique for indexing medical images. Besides, a user of such search engine can retrieve medical images which s/he has specified its attributes is some different aspects (dimensions), e.g., tissue, image modality and format, sickness and trauma, etc. So, the proposed multidimensional indexing techniques can improve effectiveness of a medical image information retrieval system (in terms of precision and recall), while having a proper efficiency (in terms of execution time and memory usage), and can improve the information retrieval process for healthcare search engines.

Requirement Specification and Modeling a Wearable Smart Blanket System for Monitoring Patients in Ambulance

Background:

Nowadays, the role of smart systems and developed tools such as wearable systems for monitoring the patients and controlling their conditions consistently has increased significantly. The present research sought to identify the factors which are essential for designing a wearable smart blanket system and modeling the proposed systems.

Methods:

To this aim, the requirements for creating the proposed system in ambulance were described after determining the features related to wearable systems by conducting on a comparative study. First, some studies were performed to identify the wearable system development. Then, the elicited questionnaire was given to the physicians and medical informatics specialists. Finally, the extracted requirements were implemented for modeling a smart blanket system.

Results:

Based on the results, the wearable smart blanket system includes some specific characteristics such as monitoring the important signs, communicating with the surroundings, processing the signals instantly, and storing all important signs. In addition, they should involve some nonfunctional characteristics such as easy installment and function, interactivity, error fault tolerance, low energy consumption, and the accuracy of sign stability. Then, based on the requirements and data elements extracted from the questionnaire, the system was modeled as a detailed design of the proposed technical blanket system. Based on the results, the architecture of the designed system could provide expected scenarios by using the Active Review for Intermediate Design-oriented scenario-based evaluation method.

Conclusion:

Today, smart systems and tools have considerably developed in terms of monitoring the patients and controlling their conditions. Therefore, wearable systems can be implemented for monitoring the health status of patients in ambulance.
