Postoperative radiotherapy in resected non-small cell lung cancer: The never-ending story

This manuscript collects in a joint and orderly manner the existing evidence at the present time about postoperative treatment with radiotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer. It also systematically reviews the current evidence, the international recommendations in the most relevant guidelines, the most controversial aspects in clinical and pathological staging, the specific technical aspects of radiotherapy treatment, and also collects all the potential risk factors that have been postulated as significant in the prognosis of these patients, evaluating the possibility of segmenting a particularly sensitive subpopulation with a high risk of relapse on which an adjuvant treatment with radiotherapy could have an impact on their clinical evolution. Finally, currently active trials that aspire to provide more evidence on this topic are reviewed.

Ivermectin treatment of mansonellosis in Trinidad

This study was conducted to determine the efficacy and long-term effects of an intervention programme based on a single dose of Ivermectin (6 mg) administered during a double-blind placebo study of 40 persons with Mansonella ozzardi infections in Blanchisseuse, Trinidad. After four years, ivermectin reduced microfilariae levels by 82.2%. Short- and long-term effectiveness of the drug is contingent upon the initial microfilariae levels of the patient. We conclude that a single dose of ivermectin reduces microfilariae densities and provides both short- and long-term reductions in M ozzardi microfilaraemia.

Posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in ethnic minorities by resident housestaff

The first 45 cases of extracapsular cataract extraction, with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation performed by ophthalmology residents at an urban county hospital were evaluated. These cases, which were performed from March 1983 to June 1984, involved a patient population that was primarily black and Hispanic (88.8%). Over half the cases represent the first five cataract implant surgeries performed by five resident surgeons in their second and third year of residency. Twenty-eight of the 45 cases (62%) were available for examination six months postoperatively. Excluding two cases with decreased vision secondary to preexisting ocular disease, 100% of these patients achieved a best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better.
