An Herbal H2 Blocker in Melasma Treatment

BACKGROUND

Melasma is a skin pigmentation disorder that remains resistant to available therapies. The exact cause of melasma is unknown. Histamine is an inflammatory factor. Its involvement in pigmentation is obscure. The aim of this study is to introduce an herbal antihistamine H2 receptor which is effective in these disorders.

METHODS

This is a review study by searching the electronic databases and also Persian Medicine books, from 2000 to 2018 by the keywords such as H2 antagonist, H2 blocker and melasma.

RESULTS

According to the researched studies, histamine can induce melanogenesis and melasma after a series of stages in the body. Also, Histamine, through receptors 2, triggers melasma. Therefore, it can be said that antihistamine H2 receptor can be effective in melasma. Considering chemical antihistamine, H2 receptors have side effects, such as digestive problems, H2 antagonists can be used in the treatment of diseases such as dyspepsia but they have multiple complications. On the other hand, there is an herbal H2 antagonist that can be useful for melasma due to having some special properties.

CONCLUSION

Herbal H2 blockers should be noted in melasma treatment along with the topical drugs.

A Review Article About Some Herbs Affecting Vitiligo Based on Avicenna's Canon

BACKGROUND

Vitiligo is a pigmentary disorder characterizing by white macules due to loss of melanocytes. Vitiligo affects about 1 to 4% of people around the world. The treatment of vitiligo has a high cost and the long process of treatment in spite of no complete remedy. It has various psychological side-effects such as depression and anxiety affecting the quality of life seriously. Avicenna in his Canon treated these patients over a thousand years ago. This study aimed to introduce some herbal drugs in vitiligo based on the Canon of Avicenna besides the conventional medical treatments.

METHODS

This is a review study, according to the Canon with the term Baras and also searching through the electronic websites with the keywords vitiligo, treatment, and herbal drugs.

RESULTS

The study found some herbs affecting the vitiligo from the Canon.

CONCLUSION

The researchers suggest conducting clinical trials on the patients with vitiligo based on the Canon besides the conventional techniques to obtain a better result in the treatment.

Food strategies of renal atrophy based on Avicenna and conventional medicine

Kidneys have an important role in the body. Any damage to kidney role can damage many organs of the body. Traditional Persian Medicine (TPM) or Iranian traditional medicine (ITM) is an ancient temperamental medicine with many literatures about kidney diseases and Avicenna (980-1025 AD) describes kidney diseases in details. This is a review study by searching of the most important clinical and pharmaceutical TPM textbooks such as The Canon of Medicine by Avicenna and scientific data banks using keywords such as "Hozal-e-Kolye", renal atrophy, tubular atrophy, kidney, chronic kidney disease, and end stage renal disease. This paper found that "Hozal-e-Kolye" in TPM texts is the same tubular atrophy in conventional medicine due to some similar symptoms between them. Lifestyle modification and use of proposed foodstuffs can be considered as a complementary medicine in addition to conventional treatments to manage these patients. TPM scholars prescribed some foodstuffs such as camel milk, sheep's milk and Ficus carica for this disease as a complementary management. This study aimed to explain HK (the same tubular atrophy considering their similar symptoms) and introduce some foodstuffs. It seems using of foodstuffs affecting tubular atrophy based on TPM literatures can has a role as a supplemental method in company with conventional medicine management.

Effectiveness of Cicer arietinum in Cutaneous Problems: Viewpoint of Avicenna and Razi

BACKGROUND

Cicer arietinum is one of the popular legumes in the most parts of the world. It is known for a long time in Asia because of the many possibilities of its application. Cicer arietinum has benefits for the skin regarding safe ingredients. Some of these ingredients are recommended in skin care.

METHODS

This study aimed to introduce the benefits of Cicer arietinum by reviewing of traditional literature from 10th to 21th century and also conventional medicine for its safe ingredients by searching the electronic data banks such as ISI, Pub Med and Scopus.

RESULTS

The results showed that Cicer arietinum has many ingredients such as Phenolic compounds, allantoin and amino acids that affect the skin problems. Also, great traditional Persian scientists such as Avicenna and Razi suggested about the cutaneous benefits of Cicer arietinum.

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study can help the researchers in producing better cosmetic and therapeutic products.
