Effect of a 6-Wk Sensory-Motor Exercise Program on the Balance and Fatigue Severity in Women With Multiple Sclerosis

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate the impact of 6 wks of at-home sensory-motor exercises on balance and fatigue levels in women with multiple sclerosis, a progressive autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system. Multiple sclerosis symptoms can significantly reduce quality of life.

DESIGN

In this quasi-experimental study, 26 female patients with multiple sclerosis aged 20-40 yrs with an expanded disability status scale of 0-4 were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The experimental group performed sensory-motor exercises for 6 wks, three sessions a week, and for 1 hr at home. Balance and fatigue were evaluated with Sharpened-Romberg tests (for static balance), a 6-step test of Get-Up and Go (for dynamic balance), and a Fatigue Severity Scale. At the end of the sixth week, these tests were re-evaluated like the pretest stage.

RESULTS

Experimental group showed better static balance and Fatigue Severity Scale than control group, but no difference in dynamic balance.

CONCLUSIONS

Considering the outbreak of COVID-19 and the resultant lockdown, the importance of exercise and physical activities in patients with multiple sclerosis, and the positive effects of sensory-motor exercises at home in the present study, these kinds of sensory-motor workouts are highly recommended to improve balance and reduce the fatigue in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Evaluation of Relationship between Trunk Muscle Endurance and Static Balance in Male Students

Purpose

Fatigue of trunk muscle contributes to spinal instability over strenuous and prolonged physical tasks and therefore may lead to injury, however from a performance perspective, relation between endurance efficient core muscles and optimal balance control has not been well-known. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of trunk muscle endurance and static balance.

Methods

Fifty male students inhabitant of Tehran university dormitory (age 23.9±2.4, height 173.0±4.5 weight 70.7±6.3) took part in the study. Trunk muscle endurance was assessed using Sørensen test of trunk extensor endurance, trunk flexor endurance test, side bridge endurance test and static balance was measured using single-limb stance test. A multiple linear regression analysis was applied to test if the trunk muscle endurance measures significantly predicted the static balance.

Results

There were positive correlations between static balance level and trunk flexor, extensor and lateral endurance measures (Pearson correlation test, r=0.80 and P<0.001; r=0.71 and P<0.001; r=0.84 and P<0.001, respectively). According to multiple regression analysis for variables predicting static balance, the linear combination of trunk muscle endurance measures was significantly related to the static balance (F (3,46) = 66.60, P<0.001). Endurance of trunk flexor, extensor and lateral muscles were significantly associated with the static balance level. The regression model which included these factors had the sample multiple correlation coefficient of 0.902, indicating that approximately 81% of the variance of the static balance is explained by the model.

Conclusion

There is a significant relationship between trunk muscle endurance and static balance.

Exercise induced bronchospasm in physically fit female students of Kerman University and their pulmonary function tests

INTRODUCTION

High prevalence of respiratory symptoms and bronchial hyper-responsiveness has been reported in professionals athletes, particularly in relation to climate and environment. However, the airway response to exercise in active population has been poorly investigated especially in women. The aim of this study was to examine pulmonary function test changes in physically fit female students of Kerman University.

METHODS

Sixty physically fit female students (19 ± 1.12 years old) were randomly selected out of 500 students. Each subject underwent the physical fitness test (Couper test) of the maximal distance running in 12 min. The exercise induced bronchospasm (EIB) symptoms including coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, dyspnea, previously diagnosed asthma and allergy, the use of anti-asthmatics medication and the family history of asthma were recorded using a questionnaire. Pulmonary function tests including; forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and maximal expiratory flow at 50% of the FVC (MEF(50)) were measured at rest (baseline), immediately, 5, and 15 min after an exercise test.

RESULT

The result of this study showed that the prevalence of the symptoms of EIB was 40.0%. There was not any significant difference in baseline PFT values between symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects. However, All PFT values of symptomatic subjects were significantly lower than asymptomatic immediately after exercise (p < 0.05 to p < 0.01). In addition, PFT values were significantly reduced in all times intervals for the symptomatic subjects (p < 0.05 to p < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

The results showed a high prevalence of respiratory symptoms and EIB in healthy female students.
