Abstract
AIMS To compare the effects of bladder training (BT) versus BT with pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) in women with overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. METHODS Randomized controlled clinical trial including women with OAB symptoms, randomized into two groups: BT versus BT + PFMT. For 12 consecutive weeks, the women received home BT. The BT + PFMT performed supervised PFMT, once/week, associated at home PFMT protocol. Primary outcomes were urinary urgency, daytime voiding frequency, nocturia and urgency urinary incontinence assisted by both 3-day bladder diary and International Consultation on Incontinence OAB (ICIQ-OAB) questionnaire. Secondary outcomes were 24-h pad test and Patient Global Impression of Improvement. T-test, analysis of variance, Mann-Whitney (SPSS 20.0) and power/effect size (G-power) were applied in data analyses. RESULTS Sixty-three women were included (B = 31; BT + PFMT = 32). There was no significant statistical difference between groups in terms of urinary symptoms: daytime frequency (BT: pre: 11.59 [±5.80], post: 9.10 [±4.05]; BT + PFMT: pre: 10.67 [±3.73], post: 8.08 [±3.38]) p = 0.75; nocturia: (BT: pre: 1.46 [±0.91], post: 0.82 [±0.82]; BT + PFMT: pre: 1.80 [±2.26], post: 0.82 [±1.15]) p = 0.70; urinary urgency (BT: pre: 3.22 [±4.70], post: 4.49 [±4.32]; BT + PFMT: pre: 6.87 [±5.60], post: 6.15 [±4.52]) p = 0.10; ICIQ-OAB total score: (BT: pre: 9.16 [±2.55], post: 6.32 [±3.77]; (BT + PFMT: pre: 9.75 [±2.06], post: 5.06 [±3.44] p = 0.30. CONCLUSIONS Supervised PFMT added to BT did not provide further improvements than isolated BT in women with OAB symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS This video's proposal was to present one of the pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training programs used in our research, and to study the effects of abdominopelvic kinesiotherapy on female PFM function. METHODS A total of 82 women participated in this study, 11 nulliparous, 13 primiparous pregnant, 20 primiparous postpartum and 38 postmenopausal women, who were evaluated first by digital palpation, then by either electromyography or vaginal dynamometry to investigate their PFM strength, followed by ICIQ UI-SF and ICIQ-OAB to evaluate urinary symptoms. This intervention protocol lasted for 60 min, three times a week, with a total of 10 sessions, and was supervised by a physiotherapist, using a gym ball, according to Marques and collaborators. RESULTS A significant increase in PFM strength was observed by digital palpation in all groups. This finding was confirmed by electromyography in both pregnant (p = 0.0001) and postpartum (p = 0.0001) groups, as well as in 20 of the 38 women from the postmenopausal group (p = 0.003) then by vaginal dynamometry (p = 0.02) in the rest of the women (18) from the same group, with a concomitant decrease in urinary symptoms (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The abdominopelvic kinesiotherapy program promotes an increase in pelvic floor muscle strength and a decrease in urinary symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS This video's proposal was to present one of the pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training programs, used in our research, that we designed as a virtual reality intervention protocol and investigated its effects on PFM contractility. METHODS Two clinical, controlled and prospective studies were conducted, one with 19 nulliparous women without urinary symptoms, who were evaluated by both electromyography and digital palpation (DP) and another with 27 postmenopausal women with mixed urinary symptoms (assessed by both ICIQ UI-SF and ICIQ-OAB), evaluated by vaginal dynamometry and DP, with a total of 46 women in both studies. This protocol was designed so that the participant would play a video game, seated on a pressure base platform, while commanding it through her pelvic movements. Using a virtual reality game, five activities were performed during 30 min, twice a week, with a total of 10 sessions. RESULTS A significant increase in PFM strength was found in both the nulliparous (p = 0.0001) and the postmenopausal (p = 0.0001) groups of women, as ascertained by DP. A significant increase in postmenopausal women's muscle strength and endurance assessed by dynamometry (p = 0.05) and a concomitant decrease in their urinary symptoms, were observed. CONCLUSION This virtual reality program promoted an increase in PFM contractility and a decrease in postmenopausal urinary symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate if a specific pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) program effectively increases pelvic floor muscle (PFM) contractility and decreases anterior pelvic organ prolapse (POP) as well as urogynecological symptoms, in postmenopausal women. The mean outcome measure of this study was the pelvic floor surface electromyography (sEMG) activity. STUDY DESIGN A clinical, randomized, blinded-assessor and controlled study was conducted with 46 postmenopausal women. Thirty women completed this study (mean age of 65.93 years), divided into two groups: Treatment Group - TG (n=18) and Control Group - CG (n=12). The evaluation was carried out using digital palpation, sEMG, pelvic organ prolapse quantification (POP-Q) as well as validated questionnaires by the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaires to investigate urogynecological symptoms. The treatment protocol consisted of 12 group sessions, twice a week, with 30 min of duration each. These data were then submitted to statistical analyses by the Statistical Analysis System for Windows software, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS The pelvic floor muscle contractility increased after PFMT, evaluated by sEMG (p=0.003) and digital palpation (p=0.001), accompanied by a decrease in urinary symptoms (p<0.001 for ICIQ-OAB scores e 0.036 for ICIQ UI-SF) as well as anterior pelvic organ prolapse (p=0.03). CONCLUSION This preliminary study suggests that the applied PFMT program could be an effective way to increase PFM contractility, as well as to decrease both anterior pelvic organ prolapse and urinary symptoms, in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Overactive Bladder Syndrome (OAB) is defined by the ICS (International Continence Society) as urinary urgency, with or without urgency incontinence and frequently associated with increase of frequency and nocturia. PURPOSE The aim of the study was to establish a correlation between OAB symptoms and Age in women aged 20-45. MATERIALS AND METHODS We interviewed 1050 women aged 20-45 in the area of Campinas, Brazil, to investigate the prevalence of Overactive Bladder Symptoms. In this study we used the ICIQ-OAB questionnaire (ICS standard), in its validated Portuguese version and a specific questionnaire for the demographics. RESULTS Overall, women aged 35-45 years showed significantly higher scores in the ICIQ-OAB questionnaire than all other groups (P<.001). Older women (35-45) presented a significantly higher score than younger women (all other groups) (P<.0001) regarding urinary frequency. Regarding frequency, there was a significant difference between the age group 35-45 (higher score) and the age groups 20-22 and 23-27 (P<.0001). Women aged 35-45 presented significantly more nocturia than women in the age groups of 28-34, 23-27 and 20-22. Women in the group of 28-34 also presented more nocturia than women aged 20-22 (P<.0001). Women aged 35-45 experienced more urgency than those in the age groups of 28-34 and 23-27 (P<.0001). Women aged 35-45 had significantly more urgency incontinence than all the other groups, and women in group of 20-22 also presented more incontinence than those aged 23-27 (P<.0001). Significant differences were also found regarding symptom bother, women in group 35-45 years old presented higher scores than the other groups regarding frequency (P<.0001), nocturia (P=.0011), urgency (P=.0015) and urgency incontinence (P<.0001). CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, older women present more OAB symptoms and therefore a higher score than younger women.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION few studies have been carried out on therapeutic options in patients with painful bladder syndrome associated with interstitial cystitis. The aim is to verify the safety and effectiveness of treatment with sodium hyaluronate through intravesical instillation in patients with painful bladder syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS a series of 18 female patients is presented, with a mean age of 51 years and prior diagnosis of painful bladder syndrome, who were treated by means of the weekly infusion of an intravesical solution of 40mg of sodium hyaluronate in sterile solution, over a period of eight weeks. The patients were examined clinically and urodynamically prior to their inclusion in the study and eight months after the instillations had concluded. RESULTS there was a statistically significant improvement in the urodynamic parameters and in the symptoms measured quantitatively by means of the questionnaire "Pelvic Pain and Urgency/Frequency" between the baseline situation and after the vesical instillation of sodium hyaluronate in patients with painful bladder syndrome. There was no toxicity arising from the treatment, given that no adverse effects were recorded in relation to it. CONCLUSION the clinical use of intravesical hyaluronic acid in patients with painful bladder syndrome possibly associated with interstitial cystitis has been demonstrated. The clinical improvement is also associated both with increased bladder capacity and improved bladder sensitivity. Tolerance was excellent. Clinical tests that more profoundly evaluate the therapeutic potential of this drug in this type of patients are required.

Abstract
PURPOSE To translate, culturally adapt and validate the questionnaire "International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Overactive Bladder" (ICIQ-OAB) for the Portuguese Language. METHODS Two Brazilian translators acquainted with the objectives of this research translated the ICIQ-OAB into Portuguese and both translations were back-translated by two other native English speaking translators. The differences between the versions were brought to agreement and pre-tested in a pilot study. The final version of the ICIQ-OAB was applied together with the previously translated and tested version of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form (ICIQ-SF) in 142 male and female patients with irritative urinary symptoms. For the validation of the ICIQ-OAB the following psychometric features were evaluated: reliability (internal consistency and test-retest) and validity of the survey. The retest was performed four weeks after the first interview. RESULTS The reliability of the instrument was demonstrated through the Cronbach α Coefficient, with a general result of 0.7. The test-retest corroborated the stability of the instrument through the intraclass correlation coefficient and presented a result of 0.91 and 0.95 when compared to both the ICIQ-OAB and ICIQ-SF, respectively. When the instruments were compared by the Pearson correlation coefficient the result was 0.7 (p=0.0001), that confirms the validity of the study criterion. The concurrent validity was evaluated by the correlation between some clinical and sociodemographic variants and the ICIQ-OAB score. CONCLUSION The culturally adapted version of the ICIQ-OAB translated into Brazilian Portuguese presented satisfactory reliability and survey validity and was considered valid for the evaluation of irritative urinary symptoms of Brazilian patients of both genders.

Abstract
AIMS Several studies evidenced the association between pregnancy, mode of delivery and genitourinary symptoms. However, there are still controversies about the role of mode of delivery in the prevention or aggravation of these symptoms. This study aimed to compare the impact of three distinct modes of delivery on pelvic floor muscle contractility. METHODS Seventy-five primiparous women were divided into three groups: (1) vaginal delivery with mediolateral episiotomy (n = 28); (2) elective cesarean section (n = 26); (3) emergency cesarean section (n = 21). All patients underwent vaginal digital examination, grading the muscle contractility from 0 to 5 and surface electromyography (EMG) of the pelvic floor during the last trimester of pregnancy and 45 days after delivery. RESULTS There was a significant increase in pelvic floor contractility in the elective cesarean section group, from 2.35 to 2.92 (P = 0.03), when compared to the vaginal delivery and emergency cesarean section groups. Analysis of electromyography data showed a significant reduction in maximum contraction of the pelvic floor after vaginal delivery, from 39.17 to 31.14 µV (P = 0.001), which was not observed in both cesarean section groups. CONCLUSION Vaginal delivery was associated with a decrease in pelvic floor muscle strength and endurance 45 days after delivery when compared to elective cesarean section as well as emergency cesarean section.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE During pregnancy, hormonal change, increase in the body mass index and the pressure caused by the enlarged uterus over the bladder and pelvic floor, are some factors involved in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). This study was made to evaluate the correlation between pregnancy and delivery way with LUTS. MATERIAL AND METHOD This open prospective study was carried out using the overactive bladder questionnaire short form (OABq-SF). A total of 60 patients enrolled this study. The mean age was 24 year, raging from 14 to 40 years. The patients were evaluated during the third trimester and 6 months after delivery. Statistical analysis of the OABq-SF scores was made using the Pearson method. RESULTS Mean OABq-SF score during pregnancy was 35.2 and 6 months after delivery decreased to15. Quality of life was 82.9 during pregnancy and increased to 88.4 at 6 month after delivery. Patient's perception, that is correlation, was 55.02 (p=0.0001) during pregnancy and 36.1% (p=0.0046). Clinical correlation index was 6.7%. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that in spite of LUTS being more important during pregnancy, there is no significant clinical correlation in patient's perception.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate of the impact of NO molecules in Pluronic F-127 gel, applied topically in the clitoris, on the clitoridian blood flow of healthy volunteer women, using the Doppler ultra-sound. METHOD A total of 20 healthy women over 18 years old and sexually active with no sexual hormones alteration were enrolled. The Doppler ultra-sound procedure was performed on the artery of the clitoris in patients without the NO donor gel, and then after fifteen minutes of its application the same procedure was done again, to compare the values. RESULTS The hemodynamic results showed, that this formulation was responsible for the increase of the systolic and diastolic speeds in about 2,5 times after 15 min of the administration of the gel. The initial resistance index was increased in 1.2 due to the local venous congestion in only 15 min after the administration of gel. Indicating that this product can be used to promote the dilatation of the artery of the clitoris to treat women with sexual dysfunction. CONCLUSION The use of topic hidrogel as a donor drug in the clitoris of women resulting in a local vasodilatation, without systemic effects. These findings suggest that this preparation may be useful in the management of selected cases of female sexual dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A prospective study was conducted to assess the efficacy of sacrospinous vaginal vault fixation and its impact on the anterior compartment. The Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) system was used to quantify pelvic organ prolapse in the apical and anterior vaginal compartments. METHODS Fifty-eight patients underwent a procedure to correct apical prolapse from March 2003 to February 2006. Mean preoperative and postoperative POP-Q scores were respectively: Aa (+0.74; -1.45); Ba (+3.17; -1.36); C (+3.41; -7.71) (p<0.001). RESULTS Cure rate was 93.1%. Preoperative and postoperative evaluation of the anterior vaginal compartment was respectively: stage 1 (5.2%; 48.3%), stage 2 (6.9%; 34.5%), stage 3 (74.1%; 5.2%), and stage 4 (13.8%; 0%). De novo cystocele occurred in 87.9% of cases. An improvement was seen in lower urinary tract symptoms of urgency, nocturia, and urge incontinence. CONCLUSIONS Sacrospinous vaginal vault suspension is effective for the treatment of apical prolapse and leads to formation of cystocele in most cases.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Posterior Tibial Nerve stimulation in women with overactivity bladder symptoms and the impact in the quality of life using the Overactivity Bladder Questionnaire (OABq). METHODS thirty seven women from female urology outpatient clinic of the Hospital das Clinicas de Campinas (HC/UNICAMP) were enrolled in this prospective, controlled and randomized clinical trial. The patients were randomly placed in one of two groups: TREATMENT GROUP: patients were submitted to tibial posterior nerve electrical stimulation (n=21) and Sham group: patients had electrodes placed without electricity (n = 16). After informed consent the patients underwent a physiotherapeutic evaluation, that included voiding diary and the overactivity bladder questionnaire (OABq). The treatment schedule included eight sessions of electrical stimulation in the posterior tibial nerve, twice a week. RESULTS there were significant changes in symptoms such as frequency and nocturia (p=0,003 and p=0,001). The urgency and quality of life was improved in both group after treatment. CONCLUSION The posterior tibial nerve electrical stimulation is an effective treatment in overactive bladder.

Abstract
AIM Procedures to correct stress urinary incontinence (SUI) are designed to restore support of the urethrovescical junction and, in cases of intrinsic sphinteric dysfunction, improve the coaptation of the urethra. Voiding dysfunction and urinary retention are frequent complications of both urethropexy and urethral sling. Guatelli et al. reported a 8.5% obstruction rate following autologous sling procedure, while the obstruction rate after polypropylene sling meshes procedures was 3.7%. The aim of this study was to compare the success and bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) rates following sling procedure for SUI with two different mesh materials, synthetic versus autologous. METHODS A prospective study was carried out between July 1995 and December 1995 at the Department of Urology, University of Campinas Medical Center. RESULTS The median time between the anti-incontinence procedure and the diagnosis of BOO was nine months (3-96 months). All obstructed patients suffered from refractory urgency/frequency syndrome with varying postvoid residual volume. Our experience showed that autologous pubovaginal slings were statistically more obstructive than synthetic ones. CONCLUSION Autologous and synthetic slings presented comparable success rates in treating SUI. However, BOO was more frequent among patients who underwent autologous sling procedure.

Abstract
Sling procedures have been around for decades in the management female stress urinary incontinence (SUI), but only in the past decade they have become the preferred technique. Minimally invasive procedures are the procedure of choice in many centers for your efficacy and low morbidity. The tendinous urethral support (TUS) represents an anatomical approach that consists in placing a midurethral low tension tape anchored to the tendinous arc bilaterally. From February 1999 to October 2000, 25 female patients (mean age: 53 years old), with SUI underwent TUS procedure, and 23 were available for follow-up. Those patients were followed until 72 months. After six months, 20 (87%) patients were dry, 2 (8.7%) improved and 1 (4.3%) incontinent. However, at the last evaluation, 15 (65.2%) investigation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) may be managed by transobturator approach. We developed a three-dimensional model, for understanding the surgical anatomy and manual training as well, in order to reduce the learning curve for pelvic surgeries. OBJECTIVE To demonstrate in synthetic models, the anatomical basis for the management of SUI and cystocele. METHOD The anatomical model includes: pelvic bones, the main layers of the pelvic muscles, ligaments and fascias. The surgical devices were transobturator needles, synthetic slings and meshes for anterior vaginal wall repair. The workshop was carried out with an anatomical overview and hands-on training in this tridimentional models and finally surgery in animals. At the end, a questionnaire was applied to verify the impact of this tool in the learning process and trainee satisfaction. RESULTS As far as the anatomical concept, 90% (n=72) of the participants classified this model as very good and 10% (n=8) as good. As a tool for understanding the tridimentional pelvic floor anatomy applied to transobturator procedures there were 100% of approval. CONCLUSIONS This synthetic model allows for understanding the pelvic floor tridimentional anatomy and surgical procedures as well. Further skill is got in the animal model reducing the learning curve for transobturator procedures.

Abstract
The management of urinary incontinence after radical cystectomy and orthotopic neobladder reconstruction is a very challenging situation. We report on a patient that developed a neobladder-urethro-vaginal fistula successfully treated but resulting in severe urinary incontinence that was cured after the periurethral insertion of adjustable silicone balloons.

Abstract
The prevalence of urinary incontinence is around 20% of healthy middle-aged women. Incontinence causes a negative impact on the quality of life and sexuality. From August 2002 to January 2004, 30 patients (mean age 43 years) with stress urinary incontinence (59%), overactive bladder (15%) and mixed incontinence (26%) answered the ICIQ-SF(International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnarie-Short Form) and FSFI (Female Sexual Function Index) questionnaires before and after treatment for urinary incontinence. The follow-up ranged from 12 to 53 months. Mean ICIQ score was 17 and 7 before and after treatment respectivelly (p<0,001). Overactive bladder showed the worst scores in all domains. The patients who underwent surgery increased their scores of desire (p=0,02), satisfaction (p=0,05) and total score (p=0,02). Thirteen patients which ICIQ was zero increased: desire (p<0,01), satisfaction (p=0,05) and total score (p=0,01). Urinary incontinence significantly affects the quality of life. Therefore sexual evaluation in incontinence patients is recommended.
