Flexible array coil for cervical and extraspinal (FACE) MRI at 3.0 Tesla

Objective.High-resolution MRI of the cervical spine (c-spine) and extraspinal neck region requires close-fitting receiver coils to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Conventional, rigid C-spine receiver coils do not adequately contour to the neck to accommodate varying body shapes, resulting in suboptimal SNR. Recent innovations in flexible surface coil array designs may provide three-dimensional (3D) bendability and conformability to optimize SNR, while improving capabilities for higher acceleration factors.Approach.This work describes the design, implementation, and preliminaryin vivotesting of a novel, conformal 23-channel receive-only flexible array for cervical and extraspinal (FACE) MRI at 3-Tesla (T), with use of high-impedance elements to enhance the coil's flexibility. Coil performance was tested by assessing SNR and geometry factors (g-factors) in a phantom compared to a conventional 21-channel head-neck-unit (HNU).In vivoimaging was performed in healthy human volunteers and patients using high-resolution c-spine and neck MRI protocols at 3T, including MR neurography (MRN).Main results.Mean SNR with the FACE was 141%-161% higher at left, right, and posterior off-isocenter positions and 4% higher at the isocenter of the phantom compared to the HNU. Parallel imaging performance was comparable for an acceleration factor (R) = 2 × 2 between the two coils, but improved forR= 3 × 3 with meang-factors ranging from 1.46-2.15 with the FACE compared to 2.36-3.62 obtained with the HNU. Preliminary human volunteer and patient testing confirmed that equivalent or superior image quality could be obtained for evaluation of osseous and soft tissue structures of the cervical region with the FACE.Significance.A conformal and highly flexible cervical array with high-impedance coil elements can potentially enable higher-resolution imaging for cervical imaging.

The dual‐mode dipole: A new array element for 7T body imaging with reduced SAR

PURPOSE

To design and test an RF-coil based on two orthogonal eigenmodes in a pair of coupled dipoles, for 7 Tesla body imaging with improved SAR, called dual-mode dipole.

METHODS

The proposed coil consists of two dipoles and creates two orthogonal field distributions in a sample (the even and odd modes). A coupler used to excite the modes was miniaturized with the conductor track routing technique. Numerical simulations of the dual-mode dipole in the presence of a homogeneous phantom were performed. Moreover, an array of such coils was simulated with a voxel body model. For comparison, a fractionated dipole combined with a surface loop coil was also simulated. Both coils were tested in a 7 Tesla MRI system on a phantom. Subsequently four dual-mode dipoles or dipole/loop combinations were used for a comparison of imaging performance in a human volunteer.

RESULTS

Using the even mode of the dual-mode dipole showed 70% SAR reduction in comparison to the fractionated dipole while having the same B 1 + in the prostate region. The odd mode of the dual-mode dipole showed a performance comparable to the surface loop both for SAR and B₁ efficiency. The obtained results showed that the proposed coil while creating lower SAR gave images of the same quality as the reference coil.

CONCLUSIONS

It was demonstrated that the array of dual-mode dipoles provided the same SNR and prostate imaging quality as the reference array, while demonstrating lower SAR. This is due to a smoother current distribution over a sample surface.

Predictions for existing chemicals-a multilateral QSAR project

Abstract Following a previous collaborative EU/EPA project focussed on QSAR predictions for a selection of new chemicals which had been notified in the EU, a similar exercise was started in 1993 on existing chemicals. In a first phase, the project addresses the High Production Volume (HPV) chemicals which are produced or imported at levels above a 1000t/year in the EU and 454t/year in the US. The relevant EU (Annex 1 of Existing Chemicals Regulation No. 793/93) and US-EPA lists contain 1036 and 2881 organic substances respectively of which HPV 749 chemicals are in common. The joint project aims at an estimation through validated QSAR models of the physical-chemical, ecotoxicity and toxicity endpoints which are included in the regulation and where experimental data will become available in IUCLID (International Unified Chemicals Information Database). Next to EC-JRC (ECB) and US-EPA, various laboratories in the EU are contributing to the project and recently, two institutes in Japan have joined in this project.
