Activated PMN Exosomes: Pathogenic Entities Causing Matrix Destruction and Disease in the Lung

Here, we describe a novel pathogenic entity, the activated PMN (polymorphonuclear leukocyte, i.e., neutrophil)-derived exosome. These CD63⁺/CD66b⁺ nanovesicles acquire surface-bound neutrophil elastase (NE) during PMN degranulation, NE being oriented in a configuration resistant to α1-antitrypsin (α1AT). These exosomes bind and degrade extracellular matrix (ECM) via the integrin Mac-1 and NE, respectively, causing the hallmarks of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Due to both ECM targeting and α1AT resistance, exosomal NE is far more potent than free NE. Importantly, such PMN-derived exosomes exist in clinical specimens from subjects with COPD but not healthy controls and are capable of transferring a COPD-like phenotype from humans to mice in an NE-driven manner. Similar findings were observed for another neutrophil-driven disease of ECM remodeling (bronchopulmonary dysplasia [BPD]). These findings reveal an unappreciated role for exosomes in the pathogenesis of disorders of ECM homeostasis such as COPD and BPD, providing a critical mechanism for proteolytic damage.

Praseodymium-decorated graphene oxide as a corrosion inhibitor in acidic media for the magnesium AZ31 alloy

In the present work, Pr-decorated graphene oxide was synthesized and tested as a corrosion barrier layer in acidic media for the magnesium AZ31 alloy. The morphology, composition and structure of Pr-decorated graphene oxide sheets were characterized via HRTEM, FESEM, Raman, XRD, DLS, UV and FTIR studies. The corrosion inhibition efficiency on the alloy surface was monitored via microstructural and electrochemical methods. The results indicate that Pr-decorated graphene oxide provides improved protection for the Mg AZ31 alloy compared to conventional epoxy coatings. The proposed mechanism arises from a combination of the barrier activities of the composite, GO + Pr, and the epoxy coating on the Mg alloy in acidic media.

Reduced Baroreflex Sensitivity, Decreased Heart Rate Variability with Increased Arterial Stiffness in Predialysis

High cardiovascular morbidity and mortality is observed in predialytic chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. The underlying mechanism of cardiovascular dysfunction often remains unclear. The present study was designed to perform multiparametric assessment of baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), arterial stiffness indices, and cardiovascular variabilities (heart rate variability [HRV] and blood pressure variability [BPV]) together in predialytic CKD patients; compare it with normal healthy controls; and determine their relationships in predialytic nondiabetic CKD patients. Thirty CKD Stage 4 and 5 predialytic non-diabetic patients and 30 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. BRS was determined by spontaneous sequence method. Short-term HRV and BPV were assessed using 5 min beat-to-beat data of RR intervals and blood pressure by time domain and frequency domain analysis. Arterial stiffness indices - carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index - were measured using SphygmoCor Vx device (AtCor Medical, Australia). Predialytic CKD patients had significantly low BRS, high PWV, and low HRV as compared to healthy controls. Independent predictors of reduced systolic BRS in predialytic CKD patient group on multiple regression analysis emerged to be increase in calcium-phosphate product, increase in BPV, and decrease in HRV. Predialytic nondiabetic CKD Stage 4 and 5 patients have poor hemodynamic profile (higher PWV, lower HRV, and reduced BRS) than healthy controls. Reduced HRV and altered calcium-phosphate homeostasis emerged to be significant independent predictors of reduced BRS.

Midrapidity antiproton-to-proton ratio in pp collisons at sqrt[s]=0.9 and 7 TeV measured by the ALICE experiment

The ratio of the yields of antiprotons to protons in pp collisions has been measured by the ALICE experiment at sqrt[s]=0.9 and 7 TeV during the initial running periods of the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement covers the transverse momentum interval 0.45<p_{t}<1.05  GeV/c and rapidity |y|<0.5. The ratio is measured to be R_{|y|<0.5}=0.957±0.006(stat)±0.014(syst) at 0.9 TeV and R_{|y|<0.5}=0.991±0.005(stat)±0.014(syst) at 7 TeV and it is independent of both rapidity and transverse momentum. The results are consistent with the conventional model of baryon-number transport and set stringent limits on any additional contributions to baryon-number transfer over very large rapidity intervals in pp collisions.

Change in conformation of polymer PFO on addition of multiwall carbon nanotubes

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been added to the polymer poly (9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2, 7-diyl) end capped with dimethylphenyl (PFO) in various weight percentages and the blends thus prepared, using a solution processing approach, have been characterized using SEM, UV-VIS spectroscopy, PL spectroscopy and I-V characterization. The SEM micrographs show a change in the structure of the polymer from partially crystalline to a glassy state in the blend form. The morphology observations are supported by absorption spectra which show a very high diminution of the polymers' beta peak in the spectra obtained from the polymer-nanotube blend. Thus, multiwall carbon nanotubes modify the local nanoscopic structure of PFO leading to a more glassy structure instead of a partially crystalline form and provide a method to tailor the conformation of polymer PFO, depending on intended application. I-V characteristics reveal an increase in current on formation of the polymer-nanotube blend as compared to the polymer-only structure. On the basis of percolation theory, as applied to these polymer-nanotube blends, a percolation threshold value of 0.45 wt% and critical exponent value of 1.84 has been obtained, indicating the formation of a three dimensional polymer-nanotube network.

Carbon nanotube-based organic light emitting diodes

Carbon nanotubes; revolutionary and fascinating from the materials point of view and exceedingly sensational from a research point of view; are standing today at the threshold between inorganic electronics and organic electronics and posing a serious challenge to the big daddies of these two domains in electronics i.e., silicon and indium tin oxide (ITO). In the field of inorganic electronics, carbon nanotubes offer advantages such as high current carrying capacity, ballistic transport, absence of dangling bonds, etc. and on the other hand, in the field of organic electronics, carbon nanotubes offer advantages such as high conductivity, high carrier mobility, optical transparency (in visible and IR spectral ranges), flexibility, robustness, environmental resistance, etc. and hence, they are seriously being considered as contenders to silicon and ITO. This review traces the origin of carbon nanotubes in the field of organic electronics (with emphasis on organic light emitting diodes) and moves on to cover the latest advances in the field of carbon nanotube-based organic light emitting diodes. Topics that are covered within include applications of multi-wall nanotubes and single-wall nanotubes in organic light emitting diodes. Applications of carbon nanotubes as hole-transport layers, as electron-transport layers, as transparent electrodes, etc. in organic light emitting diodes are discussed and the daunting challenges facing this progressive field today are brought into the limelight.

Hypothyroidism and ventilator dependency

Four patients with long-term ventilator dependency and severe hypothyroidism discovered in a single year are described. Correction of hypothyroidism was helpful in weaning three patients from the ventilator. The fourth patient died of other medical problems. None of these patients had goiter or clinical evidence of hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism was discovered during workup for neurologic or cardiologic problems. Although hypothyroidism is not a common cause of ventilator dependency, it might be more common than we think.

Ionizing waves of potential gradient in a transversely excited N(2) laser cavity

The positions of maximum intensity in the beam cross section of transversely excited N(2) lasers have been measured at different gas pressures for three types of laser channel. The results show that there is a nonuni-formity in the population inversion in the interelectrode region, which is discussed in terms of ionizing waves of potential gradient.
