Abstract
We present improved germanium-based constraints on sub-GeV dark matter via dark matter-electron (χ-e) scattering using the 205.4 kg·day dataset from the CDEX-10 experiment. Using a novel calculation technique, we attain predicted χ-e scattering spectra observable in high-purity germanium detectors. In the heavy mediator scenario, our results achieve 3 orders of magnitude of improvement for m_{χ} larger than 80 MeV/c^{2} compared to previous germanium-based χ-e results. We also present the most stringent χ-e cross-section limit to date among experiments using solid-state detectors for m_{χ} larger than 90 MeV/c^{2} with heavy mediators and m_{χ} larger than 100 MeV/c^{2} with electric dipole coupling. The result proves the feasibility and demonstrates the vast potential of a new χ-e detection method with high-purity germanium detectors in ultralow radioactive background.

Abstract
The paper examined the potential demand for a food specialty dairy product, cheese, with alternative multiple labels. A random-parameter logit model was applied to interpret the results of online discrete choice experiments (DCE) for the elicitation of the preference of the cheese consumers surveyed in two European countries, France (n = 400) and Italy (n = 408). We analyzed consumers’ choices of quality-labeled cheeses, i.e., protected-designation-of-origin (PDO)-labeled Parmigiano Reggiano and Comté. Other features were tested, such as organic (Comté) and Mountain Product (Parmigiano Reggiano) labels, companies’ brands and price. The paper contributes to the literature on credence attributes by examining consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for differentiated cheese products in two EU countries, and by identifying the effects of personal characteristics, in terms of socio-demographics and level of product involvement, on the differences in preferences. The results show that price was the most important attribute in both countries, followed by the PDO quality label, particularly when paired with the second quality feature. Two cheese consumer segments were identified via latent class models in each country, helping producers to improve their marketing of agri-food products with a high gastronomic value and differentiation potential.

Abstract
Geographical Indications (GIs) can increase producer margins and contribute to local economic development, but the extent to which they do so depends on the nature of consumer demand. A Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) considers the value that consumers place on a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in comparison with a leading manufacturer’s brand, as well as the importance of taste variations. Based on an application of DCE to sausages in Hungary, results indicate that a PGI can generate value to consumers exceeding that conveyed by the leading manufacturer’s brand. Consumers’ taste preferences, however, may not be consistent with the specification of GI products. Latent Class (LC) and Random parameter Latent Class (RLC) analyses identify two consumer segments, with the majority of consumers (71%-LC, 65%-RLC) classified as traditionalists, who most value the GI label, while a minority (29%-LC, 35%-RLC) is brand conscious, for whom the GI status is less salient. Both theoretical and business implications for GI marketing and club branding are drawn.

Abstract
This cross-country study investigates the relative role of organic labelling in consumers' purchase decisions for apples and the extent to which behavioral constructs, derived from an extension of the Theory of Planned Behavior, influence consumers' choices. We apply an Integrated Choice and Latent Variable Model, combining a discrete choice experiment with structural equation modelling. Empirical validation draws on data from an online survey conducted in three European countries (NGermany=404; NNorway=407; NUK=401). In all countries, price is by far the most important attribute in consumers' purchase decision of apples, followed by country-of-origin and production method. The results show considerable consistency across the investigated countries regarding the importance of behavioral constructs - attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, trust, and personal moral norms - in explaining consumers' intentions to buy, and purchase choices for, organic apples, confirming the derived theoretical framework.

Abstract
This paper investigates consumers' preferences for egg purchase in two European countries, Hungary and Italy. We utilize random parameter logit models to interpret the results of discrete choice experiments (DCE) for the elicitation of preference of the egg consumers. A sample of 403 in the Hungarian survey and 404 in the Italian survey were recruited in summer 2018. The DCE questionnaire includes the following product and process characteristics: organic labels, nutrition and health claims, and price. Our results show that for Hungarian and Italian consumers, the price is the most important attribute, followed by the nutrition and health claim and the organic production labelling. Three egg consumer segments can be identified via latent class models for each country. In both countries, we found similar consumer groups, the Price Sensitive and Quality Optimizing Opportunist Consumers and Health Conscious Buyers, respectively. Particularly, compared to the other segments the Health Conscious Buyers (46% in Hungary and 49% in Italy) exhibited stronger preference for and are willing to pay a higher price premium for eggs with organic label and nutrition claims. In Italy, we identified a third segment with consumers preferring simpler labelling approach, whilst in Hungary we found a consumer segment distrusting the EU organic logo.

Abstract
This paper presents empirical findings from a combination of two elicitation techniques-discrete choice experiment (DCE) and best-worst scaling (BWS)-to provide information about the role of consumers' trust in food choice decisions in the case of credence attributes. The analysis was based on a sample of 459 Taiwanese consumers and focuses on red sweet peppers. DCE data were examined using latent class analysis to investigate the importance and the utility different consumer segments attach to the production method, country of origin, and chemical residue testing. The relevance of attitudinal and trust-based items was identified by BWS using a hierarchical Bayesian mixed logit model and was aggregated to five latent components by means of principal component analysis. Applying a multinomial logit model, participants' latent class membership (obtained from DCE data) was regressed on the identified attitudinal and trust components, as well as demographic information. Results of the DCE latent class analysis for the product attributes show that four segments may be distinguished. Linking the DCE with the attitudinal dimensions reveals that consumers' attitude and trust significantly explain class membership and therefore, consumers' preferences for different credence attributes. Based on our results, we derive recommendations for industry and policy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Perineural invasion (PNI) is an adverse prognostic factor in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). The American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging Manual, eighth edition, introduced a subdivision of PNI into two distinct forms, that is, extratumoral and intratumoral PNI (EPNI and IPNI, respectively). We designed the current study to assess whether EPNI and IPNI have different prognostic implications in terms of disease control and survival outcomes in patients with OCSCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively examined 229 consecutive patients with OCSCC and PNI who underwent radical surgery between July 2003 and November 2016. EPNI and IPNI were identified in 76 and 153 patients, respectively. The 5-year locoregional control (LRC), distant metastasis, disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS) rates served as the main outcome measures. RESULTS Compared with patients showing IPNI, those with EPNI had a higher prevalence of worst pattern of invasion type-5 (P < 0.001), alcohol consumption (P = 0.03), and close margins (P = 0.002). Univariate analysis revealed that EPNI was a significant predictor of 5-year LRC (P = 0.024), DFS (P = 0.007), and OS (P = 0.034) rates. After allowance for potential confounders in multivariable analysis, ENPI was retained in the model as an independent predictor of 5-year LRC (P = 0.028), DFS (P = 0.011), and OS (P = 0.034) rates. CONCLUSION Compared with IPNI, the presence of EPNI in OCSCC portends less favorable outcomes. Patients with EPNI are potential candidates for definite aggressive treatment modalities aimed at improving prognosis.

Abstract
The presentation of credence attributes such as the product's origin or the production method has a significant influence on consumers' food purchase decisions. The dataset includes survey responses from a discrete choice experiment with 1309 food shoppers in Taiwan using the example of sweet pepper. The survey was carried out in 2014 in the three largest Taiwanese cities. It evaluates the impact of providing information on the equality of organic standards on consumers' preferences at the example of sweet pepper. Equality of organic standards implies that regardless of products’ country-of-origin (COO) organic certifications are based on the same production regulation and managerial processes. Respondents were randomly allocated to the information treatment and the control group. The dataset contains the product choices of participants in both groups, as well as their sociodemographic information.

Abstract
PURPOSE Intervertebral disc degeneration is a major cause of back pain. Novel therapies for prevention or reversal of disc degeneration are needed. It is desirable for potential therapies to target both inflammation and matrix degeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS The combined regenerative potential of link protein N-terminal peptide (LN) and fullerol on annulus fibrosus (AF) cells was evaluated in a 3D culture model. RESULTS Interleukin-1α (IL-1α)-induced AF cell degeneration was counteracted by fullerol, LN, and fullerol + LN, with the latter having the greatest effect on matrix production as evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction and glycosaminoglycan assay. IL-1α-induced increases in pro-inflammatory mediators (interleukin-6 and cyclooxygenase-2) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1, -2, -9, and -13) were also counteracted by fullerol and LN. CONCLUSION Our data demonstrate that LN and fullerol individually, and in combination, promote matrix production and have anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic effects on AF cells.

Abstract
Background Peripheral innate immune response may induce sickness behavior through activating microglia, excessive cytokines production, and neuroinflammation. Dexmedetomidine (Dex) has anti-inflammatory effect. We investigated the effects of Dex on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced neuroinflammation and sickness behavior in mice. Materials and methods BALB/c mice were intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected with Dex (50 ug/kg) or vehicle. One hour later, the mice were injected (i.p.) with Escherichia coli LPS (0.33 mg/kg) or saline (n = 6 in each group). We analyzed the food and water intake, body weight loss, and sucrose preference of the mice for 24h. We also determined microglia activation and cytokines expression in the brains of the mice. In vitro, we determine cytokines expression in LPS-treated BV-2 microglial cells with or without Dex treatment. Results In the Dex-pretreated mice, LPS-induced sickness behavior (anorexia, weight loss, and social withdrawal) were attenuated and microglial activation was lower than vehicle control. The mRNA expression of TNF-α, MCP-1, indoleamine 2, 3 dioxygenase (IDO), caspase-3, and iNOS were increased in the brain of LPS-challenged mice, which were reduced by Dex but not vehicle. Conclusion Dexmedetomidine diminished LPS-induced neuroinflammation in the mouse brain and modulated the cytokine-associated changes in sickness behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children's dietary-related diseases and their associated costs have expanded dramatically in many countries, making children's food choice a policy issue of increasing relevance. As children spend a considerable amount of money on energy-dense, nutrient-poor (EDNP) products, a better understanding of the main drivers of children's independent food purchase decisions is crucial to move this behavior toward healthier options. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study is to investigate the role of branding and price in motivating children to choose healthier snack options. METHODS The study investigates snack choices of children ages 8 to 11, using a survey and a purchase experiment. The research took place in after-school programs of selected schools in the Boston area. Participants included 116 children. Products in the choice experiment differed on three factors: product type, brand, and price. Data were analyzed using aggregated and mixed logit models. RESULTS Children's purchase decisions are primarily determined by product type (Importance Value (IV) 56.6%), while brand (IV 22.8%) and price (IV 20.6%) prove to be of less relevance. Only those children who state that they like the familiar brand reveal a preference for the branded product in their purchase decision. Price is a significant predictor of choice when controlling for whether or not children obtain an allowance. CONCLUSION It is not simple brand awareness but a child's liking of the brand that determines whether a brand is successful in motivating a child to choose a product. The extent of children's experience with money influences their price responsiveness. To the extent that children who receive an allowance are primarily the ones buying food snacks, higher prices for EDNP snacks could be successful in motivating children to choose a healthier option.

Abstract
Objective Angioplasty and Stenting of intracranial atherosclerotic lesions have a higher complication rate and a large proportion of this is attributable to side branch arterial occlusion from forceful displacement of the atheroma into the ostia or snowplowing effect. This can result in severe disabilities when it result in small infarcts involving eloquent areas in the posterior circulation or the motor tracts. Materials and Methods We present a series of 6 cases utilizing a new dual catheter technique for maintaining the patency of at-risk vessels during angioplasty and stenting. There are several methods previously described to help reduce the incidence of stroke but because they do not have a physical presence in the ostia to protect it, they are unable to guarantee the patency of the vessel. Results All 6 patients underwent angioplasty and stenting with the technique. The patients were assessed for complications with post-procedure magnetic resonance imaging and no complications were found. Conclusion In this preliminary series, the dual catheter technique appears to safe and effective in preventing occlusion of the adjacent branch arteries. This technique may facilitate the use of the Wingspan stent in the treatment of intracranial atherosclerotic stenotic segments by reducing the risk of peri-procedural stroke.

Abstract
Citral is a typical essential oil used in the food, cosmetic, and drug industries and has shown antimicrobial activity against microorganisms. Citral is unstable and hydrophobic under normal storage conditions, so it can easily lose its bactericide activity. Nano-emulsion technology is an excellent way to hydrophilize, microencapsulate, and protect this compound. In our studies, we used a mixed surfactant to form citral-in-water nano-emulsions, and attempted to optimize the formula for preparing nanoemulsions. Citral-in-water nanoemulsions formed at So 0.4 to 0.6 and ultrasonic power of 18 W for 120 seconds resulted in a droplet size of < 100 nm for nanoemulsions. The observed antimicrobial activities were significantly affected by the formulation of the nanoemulsions. The observed relationship between the formulation and activity can lead to the rational design of nanoemulsion-based delivery systems for essential oils, based on the desired function of antimicrobials in the food, cosmetics, and agrochemical industries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Wingspan device for the treatment of symptomatic intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS). METHODS We audited a prospective ongoing database of consecutive patients who received Wingspan stenting between January 2013 and December 2015. All patients underwent MRI to audit any complications during the early follow-up period. We focused on the clinical demographics, lesion characteristics, treatment results, and periprocedural complications. Functional outcomes were measured with the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at discharge and after 3 months. RESULTS Intracranial stenting was performed in 50 patients (100%). Mean stenosis pre-stenting was 76.5±13.1% and post-stenting residual stenosis was 19.8±13.8%. The overall 30-day rate of procedure-related complications was 6.0% (3/50). Two patients (4%) developed in-stent restenosis, one of whom had a dissection at the middle cerebral artery. Interestingly, on the follow-up MRI scan there was a high incidence of asymptomatic diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) hyperintensities, 46% (23/50) presumed to be due to microembolic causes. At the 90-day, 180-day, and 1-year follow-up, three patients had further strokes resulting in a total complication rate of 12%. 92% had excellent outcomes (mRS 0-1) and only one patient had deterioration of his mRS score. CONCLUSIONS ICAS treated by Wingspan stenting using pre-placement balloon angioplasty appears safe and effective with a high technical success rate and favorable outcomes. There is a high incidence of asymptomatic DWI hyperintensites post-procedure, but these do not appear to result in long-term sequelae.

Abstract
During human ovulation, the fallopian tube fimbriae must move to the ovulation site to catch the oocyte. As the tissue-of-origin of the majority of ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC), the fallopian tube fimbriae carrying a precursor cancer lesion may also approach the ovulatory site for metastasis. We hypothesize that platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) in mature follicle fluid (FF) attracts the migration of PDGFR-expressing fimbriae toward the ovulating follicle. We observed that more PDGFR-β was expressed in the distal part than in the proximal parts of the fallopian tube, particularly in stromal cells in the lamina propria. The stromal cells, but not the epithelial cells, from normal fimbriae and fallopian tube HGSC were highly chemotactic to mature FF. The chemotactic activities were positively correlated with PDGF-BB and estradiol levels in FF and were abolished by a blocking antibody of PDGFR-β and by tyrosine kinase inhibitor imatinib. When PDGF-BB/AB was depleted from the FF, more than 80% of chemotaxis activities were diminished. This study suggests an ovarian follicle-directed and PDGF-dependent attraction of fallopian tube fimbriae before ovulation. The same mechanism may also be crucial for the ovarian homing of HGSC, which largely originates in the fimbriae.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the moderate and end stages of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration, endochondral ossifications are found in the IVD. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate whether endochondral ossification in the late stages of disc degeneration is due to the differentiation of resident progenitor cell in the annulus fibrosus (AF) and the potential signaling pathways in vitro. STUDY DESIGN This is an in vitro study of AF cell osteogenic differentiation and possible mechanisms METHODS Normal annulus fibrosus (NAF) and degenerated annulus fibrosus (DAF) cells were isolated from tissue removed surgically from juvenile patients with idiopathic scoliosis and adult patients with degenerative scoliosis. Osteogenic differentiation was investigated using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and histology. The effects of miR-221 on osteogenesis were measured by overexpression of miR-221 with lentivirus. BMP2 and phospho-Smad proteins were detected by Western blotting. RESULTS Both NAF and DAF cells underwent osteogenic differentiation, which was confirmed by detecting mineralization of the cell cultures and by an increase in the expression mRNAs for BMP2, runx2, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and osteocalcin. DAF cells exhibited increased osteogenic differentiation potential over the NAF cells. By contrast to the elevated phospho-Smads, the basal level of miR-221 significantly decreased in DAF cells compared with that in NAF cells. Cultures of both cell types in osteogenic medium showed a decrease in miR-221 expression, and overexpression of miR-221 markedly decreased the level of BMP2, phospho-Smads, and the expression of osteogenic genes in DAF cells. The osteogenic potential of DAF cells diminished by the overexpression of miR-221. CONCLUSION Compared with NAF cells, AF cells from degenerated discs have a greater tendency for osteogenic differentiation, which involves the BMP-Smad pathways and can be regulated by miR-221. These observations may be developed into a therapeutic to prevent the endochondral ossification.

Abstract
Objectives: The TBX5 gene, a member of the T-box family, is associated with congenital heart disease, electrocardiographic parameters, and development of atrial fibrillation in the general population. This study aimed to elucidate the role of TBX5 gene polymorphisms in metabolic and inflammatory profiles possibly linked to TBX5-related pathologies. Materials and Methods: A sample population of 597 individuals having routine health examinations was enrolled. Five tagging TBX5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction and restriction enzyme digestion or TaqMan SNP genotyping assays. Associations between genotypes/haplotypes and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) levels were investigated using generalized linear model analysis. Interactions between each genotype/haplotype, MMP9 level, and obesity status were tested using two-way analysis of variance with Golden Helix SVS Win32 7.3.1 software. Results: After adjusting for clinical covariates, TBX5 genotypes were found to be associated with MMP9 levels (p = 0.002 and p = 0.001 for rs4113925 and rs3825214, respectively) in a dominant inheritance model. Haplotype analysis using three tag SNPs (rs11067101, rs1247973, and rs3825214) revealed a significant association between TBX5 haplotype GCG and MMP9 levels (uncorrected p = 0.0093 and the corrected false discovery rate p = 0.0435). Multivariate analysis identified that SNP rs3825214, in addition to the MMP9 and E-selectin genotypes, was independently associated with MMP9 levels (p < 0.001). Using a dominant inheritance model, subgroup and interaction analysis showed associations between the rs4113925, rs3825214, and MMP9 levels only in nonobese individuals (p = 1.04 × 10−4 and p = 7.11 × 10−5, respectively; interaction p = 0.009 and 0.018, respectively). Subgroup analysis showed a borderline significant association between haplotype GCG and MMP9 levels (uncorrected p = 0.020 and corrected false discovery rate p = 0.073), but with no evidence of interaction. Conclusion: TBX5 genotypes/haplotypes are independently associated with MMP9 in Taiwanese individuals and occur predominantly in nonobese people. These associations may broaden our understanding of the mechanism underlying T-box family gene activity and related cardiovascular pathologies.

Abstract
We propose and demonstrate the feasibility of using all-optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AO-OFDM) for the convergent optical wired and wireless access networks. AO-OFDM relies on all-optically generated orthogonal subcarriers; hence, high data rate (> 100 Gb/s) can be easily achieved without hitting the speed limit of electronic digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters (DAC/ADC). A proof-of-concept convergent access network using AO-OFDM super-channel (SC) is demonstrated supporting 40 - 100 Gb/s wired and gigabit/s 100 GHz millimeter-wave (MMW) ROF transmissions.

Abstract
We demonstrate experimentally Manchester (MC) coding based W-band (75 - 110 GHz) radio-over-fiber (ROF) system to reduce the low-frequency-components (LFCs) signal distortion generated by two independent low-cost lasers using spectral shaping. Hence, a low-cost and higher performance W-band ROF system is achieved. In this system, direct-beating of two independent low-cost CW lasers without frequency tracking circuit (FTC) is used to generate the millimeter-wave. Approaches, such as delayed self-heterodyne interferometer and heterodyne beating are performed to characterize the optical-beating-interference sub-terahertz signal (OBIS). Furthermore, W-band ROF systems using MC coding and NRZ-OOK are compared and discussed.

We propose and demonstrate an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) radio-frequency (RF) power-fading circumvention scheme for long-reach wavelength-division-multiplexed passive-optical-network (LR-WDM-PON); hence the same capacity of 40 Gb/s can be provided to all the optical-networking-units (ONUs) in the LR-WDM-PON. Numerical analysis and proof-of-concept experiment are performed.

Abstract
Intriguing functionalities at nano-sized domain walls have recently spawned a new paradigm for developing novel nanoelectronics due to versatile characteristics. In this study, we explore a new scenario to modulate the local conduction of ferroic domain walls. Three controlling parameters, i.e., external electrical field, magnetic field and light, are introduced to the 90° domain walls (90° DWs) of BiFeO₃. Electrical modulation is realized by electrical transport, where the mobility of 90° DWs can be altered by gating voltage. We further use the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic coupling to reveal the inherent magnetism at the DWs. With an established magnetic nature, magnetotransport has been conducted to introduce magnetic controlling parameter, where a giant positive magnetoresistance change can be observed up to 200%. In addition, light modulated conduction, a core factor for multifunctional applications, is successfully demonstrated (current enhancement by a factor of 2 with 11 W white lamp). These results offer new insights to discover the tunability of domain wall nanoelectronics.

Abstract
In this work, a scalable and continuous upgradable convergent optical access network is proposed. By using a multi-wavelength coherent comb source and a programmable waveshaper at the central office (CO), optical millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signals of different frequencies (from baseband to > 100 GHz) can be generated. Hence, it provides a scalable and continuous upgradable solution for end-user who needs 60 GHz wireless services now and > 100 GHz wireless services in the future. During the upgrade, user only needs to upgrade their optical networking unit (ONU). A programmable waveshaper is used to select the suitable optical tones with wavelength separation equals to the desired mm-wave frequency; while the CO remains intact. The centralized characteristics of the proposed system can easily add any new service and end-user. The centralized control of the wavelength makes the system more stable. Wired data rate of 17.45 Gb/s and w-band wireless data rate up to 3.36 Gb/s were demonstrated after transmission over 40 km of single-mode fiber (SMF).

Abstract
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a white-light phosphor-LED visible light communication (VLC) system with an adaptive 84.44 to 190 Mbit/s 16 quadrature-amplitude-modulation (QAM) orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signal utilizing bit-loading method. Here, the optimal analogy pre-equalization design is performed at LED transmitter (Tx) side and no blue filter is used at the Rx side. Hence, the ~1 MHz modulation bandwidth of phosphor-LED could be extended to 30 MHz. In addition, the measured bit error rates (BERs) of < 3.8 × 10(-3) [forward error correction (FEC) threshold] at different measured data rates can be achieved at practical transmission distances of 0.75 to 2 m.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the influence of existing muscle tone abnormality on the sitting posture of stroke patients in reclining wheelchairs. AIM To investigate the impact of muscle tone abnormality from hemiplegia on the forward sliding and pressure of stroke patients while sitting in reclining wheelchairs. DESIGN Experimental study. SETTING The Assistive Devices/Technology Center at the Rehabilitation Department of hospital. POPULATION 14 able-bodied elders and nonambulatory elderly stroke patients with flaccid (N.=12) or spastic hemiplegia (N.=13) participated in this study. Of the 12 patients with flaccid hemiplegia, 8 suffered from left-sided hemiplegia and 4 from right-sided hemiplegia. Of the 13 patients with spastic hemiplegia, 6 suffered from left-sided hemiplegia and 7 from right-sided hemiplegia. METHODS We performed 3 reclining cycles in wheelchairs with conventional seats and V-shaped seats for each participant. The sliding along the backrest (BS) plane and the seat (SS) plane, mean sitting pressure (MP), and sacral peak pressure (SPP) of the participants were recorded. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the difference in BS, SS, MP, and SPP between able-bodied elders and stroke patients. RESULTS The BS, SS, and SPP during repetitive reclining were generally greatest in flaccid hemiplegic participants, followed by spastic hemiplegic participants, and finally by able-bodied participants. There was no significant difference in MP among three subject groups on both conventional seats and V-shaped seats in most comparisons. Able-bodied participants' buttocks tended to slide forward on conventional seats but backward on V-shaped seats, whereas hemiplegic participants' buttocks slid forward on both seat types. CONCLUSION Stroke patients with flaccid hemiplegia are the most vulnerable to sacral sitting and higher sacral pressure in reclining wheelchairs, followed by patients with spastic hemiplegia. There is a difference in the displacement pattern between participants with normal muscle tone and those with abnormal muscle tone during wheelchair positioning. People who have hemiplegia with spasticity do not have incremental forward sliding with repetitive reclining in the same way as those who have a flaccid hemiplegia. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT The findings are valuable for wheelchair prescription and caregiver education.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interleukin (IL)-19, a member of the IL-10 cytokine family, is involved in keratinocyte proliferation in psoriasis. OBJECTIVES We investigated the role of IL-19 in the wound-healing process in vivo and in vitro. METHODS Two full-thickness circular wounds (4mm in diameter) were punched into the skin of BALB/C mice. IL-19 and keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) mRNA in wounded skin were determined using real-time PCR. The wounds were treated with PBS, vehicle, IL-19 (400ng/mL), or IL-20 (400ng/mL) (n=6 in each group) twice daily and the percentage of wound healing was measured daily for 7days. In vitro, human skin fibroblast CCD966-SK cells and keratinocyte HaCaT cells were treated with IL-19 or KGF. Cell proliferation and migration were determined using bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) and transwell assays, respectively. The expression of IL-19 and KGF mRNA was also analyzed. RESULTS In wounded mouse skin, IL-19 mRNA was upregulated at 12h, and KGF at 24h after the injury. Both increases in gene expression declined 72h after the skin had been wounded. The percentage of wound healing in IL-19-treated mice was higher than in control mice. In vitro, IL-19 upregulated KGF expression in the CCD966-SK cells; IL-19 was upregulated in KGF-treated HaCaT cells. KGF but not IL-19 promoted HaCaT cell proliferation. However, IL-19 significantly increased the migration of HaCaT cells. HaCaT cells treated with the cultured supernatants of IL-19-stimulated CCD966-SK cells showed significantly more proliferation than in controls. CONCLUSIONS IL-19 is important for cutaneous wound healing because it upregulates KGF expression.

Abstract
In this work, we propose and demonstrate a stable and wavelength-tunable erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser. Here, a silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based silicon-micro-ring-resonator (SMRR) is used as the wavelength selective element inside the fiber ring cavity. A uniform period grating coupler (GC) is used to couple between the SMRR and single mode fiber (SMF) and serves also as a polarization dependent element in the cavity. The output lasing wavelength of the proposed fiber laser can be tuned at a tuning step of 2 nm (defined by the free spectral range (FSR) of the SMRR) in a bandwidth of 35.2 nm (1532.00 to 1567.20 nm), which is defined by the gain of the EDF. The optical-signal-to-noise-ratio (OSNR) of each lasing wavelength is larger than 42.0 dB. In addition, the output stabilities of power and wavelength are also discussed.

Abstract
Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-7 protects sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (AKI). Dexmedetomidine (DEX), an α2-adrenoceptor (α2-AR) agonist, has anti-inflammatory effects. We investigated the protective effects of DEX on sepsis-induced AKI and the expression of BMP-7 and histone deacetylases (HDACs). In vitro , the effects of DEX or trichostatin A (TSA, an HDAC inhibitor) on TNF-α, monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP-1), BMP-7, and HDAC mRNA expression in LPS-stimulated rat renal tubular epithelial NRK52E cells, was determined using real-time PCR. In vivo, mice were intraperitoneally injected with DEX (25 μg/kg) or saline immediately and 12 h after cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) surgery. Twenty-four hours after CLP, we examined kidney injury and renal TNF-α, MCP-1, BMP-7, and HDAC expression. Survival was monitored for 120 h. LPS increased HDAC2, HDAC5, TNF-α, and MCP-1 expression, but decreased BMP-7 expression in NRK52E cells. DEX treatment decreased the HDAC2, HDAC5, TNF-α, and MCP-1 expression, but increased BMP-7 and acetyl histone H3 expression, whose effects were blocked by yohimbine, an α2-AR antagonist. With DEX treatment, the LPS-induced TNF-α expression and cell death were attenuated in scRNAi-NRK52E but not BMP-7 RNAi-NRK52E cells. In CLP mice, DEX treatment increased survival and attenuated AKI. The expression of HDAC2, HDAC5, TNF-α, and MCP-1 mRNA in the kidneys of CLP mice was increased, but BMP-7 was decreased. However, DEX treatment reduced those changes. DEX reduces sepsis-induced AKI by decreasing TNF-α and MCP-1 and increasing BMP-7, which is associated with decreasing HDAC2 and HDAC5, as well as increasing acetyl histone H3.

Abstract
AIM Although implantation of bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMI) was shown to improve outcomes in patients with severe peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD), little experience has been reported in patients with an arterial occlusion level above the knee, ischemic gangrene, and high cardiovascular risk. This study sought to investigate the timing of gangrene tissue debridement and the safety of BMI in these patients. METHODS Six "no-option" PAOD patients were enrolled with an arterial occlusion level above the knee, ischemic gangrene, and 3 systemic diseases related to a high cardiovascular risk. The ischemic status was evaluated by measuring the ankle-brachial index (ABI), transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2), and wound healing after BMI. RESULTS All patients safely underwent the procedures with intravenous general anesthesia by titrating propofol. Major lower extremity amputation, minor debridement amputation, and debridement surgery were performed in 2 (33.3%), 1 (16.7%), and 2 (33.3%) patients, respectively, 3.1 2.8 months after BMI. Compared to the amputation group (N=3), the salvage group (N=3) had a significantly higher baseline ABI (P=0.02) and a shorter distance between the gangrene site and arterial occlusion site (P=0.01). In the 3 patients who underwent debridement, ABI and TcPO2 significantly improved 1 month after BMI, and gangrenous tissues were debrided 3.8 ± 3.6 (range, 1~8) months after BMI with complete healing within 1 month. CONCLUSION Autologous BMI therapy is safe in patients at high cardiovascular risk with an arterial occlusion level above the knee and ischemic gangrene. Effective predictors of BMI include the baseline ABI and distance to the ischemia. Gangrene tissue should be debrided at least 1 month after BMI.

Abstract
In this study, C.I. Reactive Red 2 (RR2) was removed from aqueous solutions by chitin. Exactly how the RR2 concentration, chitin dosage, pH, and temperature affected adsorption of RR2 by chitin was then determined. After reaction for 120 min, the amount of 10 and 20 mg/L RR2 absorbed onto chitin was 5.7 and 7.5 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption percentage increased from 56 to 94% when the chitin dosage was increased from 1.5 to 2.5 g/L. Experimental results indicated that the pseudo-second-order model best represents adsorption kinetics. Adsorption of RR2 increased as the temperature increased; however, it decreased with an increased pH. Experimental results further demonstrated that the Freundlich model is superior to the Langmuir model in fitting experimental isotherms. The ΔH° and ΔS° were 16.34 kJ/mol and 152.10 J/mol K, respectively. ΔH° suggested that adsorption of RR2 onto chitin was via physisorption.

Abstract
PURPOSE Interleukin (IL)-19 was expressed in invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) of the breast tissue but not in healthy breast tissue. We explored the effects of IL-19 on the pathogenesis of breast cancer and its clinical outcome. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Tumor expression of IL-19 was assessed by immunohistochemistry and/or real-time quantitative PCR between two groups of patients with breast IDC (n = 60 and 143, respectively) with available clinical and survival data. We examined the effects of IL-19 on cytokine and chemokine production as well as proliferation and migration in breast cancer cells. Mice were injected with IL-19-overexpressing or vector control 67NR cells and the tumor growth and lung metastatic micronodules were measured. RESULTS Of the IDC specimens, high IL-19 expression was associated with advanced tumor stage, high tumor metastasis, and worse survival. In vitro, IL-19 induced transcripts of IL-1β, IL-6, TGF-β, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)2, MMP9, and CXCR4 in 4T1 breast cancer cells; induced fibronectin expression and assembly; and promoted cancer cell proliferation and migration, which were inhibited by anti-IL-19 monoclonal antibody (mAb). Endogenous fibronectin expression and cancer cell migration were lower in IL-19 knockdown 4T1 cells. In 4T1 cells, hypoxia induced IL-19 and CXCR4 expression, which was inhibited by anti-IL-19 mAb. IL-19 overexpression in noninvasive 67NR cancer cells increased cell proliferation and migration. In vivo, mice injected with IL-19-overexpressing 67NR cell clones showed larger tumors and more metastatic micronodules in the lung. CONCLUSIONS High IL-19 expression in breast cancer tissue is associated with a poor clinical outcome. IL-19 is pivotal in the pathogenesis of breast cancer.

Abstract
In this demonstration, we propose and demonstrate an adaptive long-reach passive optical network (LR-PON) using four-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) channels. The downstream traffic rates from 6.25 to 40 Gb/s (using fixed quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) level in the four OFDM bands) and from 9.37 to 40.3 Gb/s (using variable QAM levels in the four OFDM bands) can be achieved adaptively in the optical network units (ONUs) depending on different fiber transmission lengths from 0 to 100 km. For the upstream transmission, a 10 Gb/s 16-QAM OFDM signal with pre-emphasis is experimentally performed by using a 2.5 GHz directly modulated laser (DML). Based on the simulation and experimental results, the proposed adaptive four-band OFDM system could be a promising candidate for the future LR-PON.

Abstract
Primitive neuroectodermal tumours (PNETs) are aggressive undifferentiated tumours that occur mainly in the central nervous system (CNS). Reviewing the literature, only six cases of primary PNET of the mandible have been reported. These rare tumours are usually overlooked in clinical practice. An 18-year-old woman who presented with dental caries and left cheek swelling was initially diagnosed with facial cellulitis, but the swelling persisted despite adequate intravenous antibiotic therapy. Subsequent ultrasound and MR examinations revealed a tumour originating from the left mandibular ramus. The ultrasonography-guided percutaneous core needle biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of peripheral PNET. The radiographic features of mandibular PNETs are similar to those of PNETs in other regions, except for haemorrhage, necrosis and calcification. In addition, this is the first reported case with sonographic and MR images of this rare tumour, and the first case that was diagnosed based on the ultrasonography-guided percutaneous core needle biopsy. Using these image characteristics, mandibular PNETs can be diagnosed more accurately.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) promotes immunosuppression, which predisposes patients to infectious complications. We investigated the role of interleukin (IL)-19 in the functions of CD4+ T cells in patients undergoing CABG with CPB. METHODS Blood samples were withdrawn from 42 patients undergoing elective CABG with CPB. Serum levels of IL-19 were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The CD4+/CD25+ T-cell population was determined with flow cytometry. Isolated CD4+ T cells were cultured and assayed for proliferation and cytokine production under phorbol myristate acetate/ionomycin stimulation. Cytokine production and Foxp3 mRNA expression in CD4+ T cells from healthy volunteers with or without IL-19 treatment were determined with ELISA and real-time polymerase chain reaction, respectively. RESULTS Proliferation percentages were 162%, 48%, 34%, and 39%, and interferon (IFN)-γ production was 1.22 ng/mL, 0.56 ng/mL, 0.33 ng/mL, and 0.35 ng/mL in the CD4+ T cells of patients before CPB and at 24 hours, 48 hours, and 96 hours, respectively, after CPB. Serum levels of IL-19 were higher but negatively correlated with CD4+ T-cell proliferation and IFN-γ production. The populations of CD4+/CD25+ T cells and expression of Foxp3 mRNA in T cells were higher and were positively correlated with IL-19 levels after CPB. Treatment with IL-19 reduced T-cell proliferation and IFN-γ production, increased Foxp3 mRNA expression, and induced the regulatory activity of CD4+ T cells. CONCLUSIONS Interleukin-19 reduces T-cell responses and promotes the regulatory activity of CD4+ T cells. Induced IL-19 in patients undergoing CABG with CPB contributes to cell-mediated immunosuppression.

Abstract
Silymarin is an active constituent contained in the seeds of the milk thistle plant and is widely used as a hepatic protection agent due to its antioxidant-like activity. In the present study we evaluated the potential action of silymarin against cervical cancer and investigated its mechanism of action. Treatment of cervical cancer cells (C-33A) with silymarin resulted in a significant decrease in cell viability. Silymarin induced apoptosis through the modulation of Bcl-2 family proteins and activation of caspase 3. Silymarin also inhibited the phosphorylation of Akt with an increase in expression of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN). We also observed that silymarin suppressed C-33A cell invasion and wound-healing migration in a concentration-dependent manner. Western-blot analysis showed that silymarin significantly inhibited the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in C-33A cells. Furthermore, we applied siRNA to lower the PTEN gene, which diminished the anticancer actions of silymarin. Taken together, these results show that silymarin has the potential to suppress the survival, migration and invasion of C-33A cancer cells; thus, it could be developed as a promising agent for the treatment of cervical cancer in the future.

Abstract
Hyperglycemia induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is believed as major factors leading to diabetic nephropathy (DN). DangGui (Angelica sinensis) is mentioned to show renal protective effect in combination with other herbs. Bone morphogenetic proteins-7 (BMP-7) is produced merit in protection of DN. The role of BMP-7 in DangGui-induced renal improvement is not clear. The present study investigated the effects of DangGui on renal functions, BMP-7 expression and the levels of ROS in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and high glucose-exposed rat mesangial cells (RMCs). After 1- or 4-week treatment, DangGui improved renal functions and increased renal BMP-7 expression in diabetic rats. The BMP-7 expression in RMCs was reduced by high glucose treatment and this could be reversed by DangGui. Moreover, RMCs exposed to high glucose were expired by BMP-7 RNAi transfection but those cells remained alive by scramble transfection. Thus, we employed regular RMCs to knock down BMP-7 with RNAi and we found that DangGui increased BMP-7 expression in these RMCs. Direct activation of BMP-7 expression by DangGui could be considered. The results of DPPH assay, DHE stain and lucigenin assay indicated that DangGui could inhibit high glucose-induced ROS in RMCs. These results suggest that DangGui has an ability to improve renal functions in STZ-diabetic rats through increasing endogenous BMP-7 expression and decreasing oxidative stress in kidney. The present study suggest that DangGui could be applied to improve renal functions in diabetic disorders.

Abstract
The integration of passive optical network (PON) and radio-over-fiber (ROF) networks could provide broadband services for both fixed and mobile users in a single and low-cost platform. Combining the long-reach (LR)-PON (>100 km) and the LR-ROF can further reduce the cost by simplifying the network architecture, sharing the same optical components and extending the coverage of ROF network. However, the transmission and distribution of ROF signal in LR network is very challenging due to the chromatic dispersion generated periodic power fading and code time-shifting effects in the optical fiber. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a LR-ROF signal distribution using single-sideband (SSB)-ROF signal generated by a silicon ring-modulator. The silicon modulator is compact and has low power consumption. Besides, one unique feature of the silicon ring-modulator is that it only modulates the signal wavelength at the resonant null. This makes it very suitable for the generation of the SSB-ROF signal. Numerical comparison of the SSB-ROF with the double-sideband (DSB)-ROF and optical carrier suppress (OCS)-ROF signals; as well as the fabrication of the silicon ring-modulator will be discussed.

Abstract
By using the carrier-suppressed single-sideband (CS-SSB) modulation, the Rayleigh backscattering (RB) experienced by the uplink signal can be effectively mitigated due to the reduction of the spectral overlap between the uplink signal and the distributed optical carrier. In this work, we first introduce the theoretical analysis of the CS-SSB generation using the dual-drive MZM (DD-MZM)-based and a dual-parallel MZM (DP-MZM)-based optical networking units (ONUs). Due to the different modulation mechanisms of the two CS-SSB modulations, the frequency components of the generated CS-SSB signals are also different. The transmission performance and the dispersion tolerance of the uplink signals generated by the two CS-SSB modulators are also analyzed and discussed.

Abstract
Catalpol is one of the active principles from roots of Rehmannia glutinosa Steud (Scrophulariaceae) that is widely used to treat diabetic disorders in Chinese traditional medicine using the name of Di-Huang, which is used to investigate the mechanisms for lowering of plasma glucose in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (STZ-diabetic rats). Catalpol decreased plasma glucose in a dose-related manner, and this action was reduced by pretreatment with naloxone or naloxonazine. An increase of plasma β-endorphin by catalpol was also observed in parallel. The plasma glucose lowering action of catalpol was deleted in bilateral adrenalectomized rats. Moreover, catalpol enhanced β-endorphin release from the isolated adrenal medulla of STZ-diabetic rats. Otherwise, plasma glucose lowering action of catalpol failed to produce in opioid μ-receptor knockout mice. Also, repeated administration of catalpol for 3 days in STZ-diabetic rats resulted in a marked reduction of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) expression in liver and an increased expression of glucose transporter subtype 4 (GLUT 4) in skeletal muscle. These effects were also reversed by blockade of opioid μ-receptors. Our results suggested that catalpol increased glucose utilization through increase of β-endorphin secretion from adrenal gland in STZ-diabetic rats.

Abstract
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a hybrid radio-over-fiber (ROF) wavelength division multiplexed and time division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-TDM PON) architecture to mitigate Rayleigh backscattering (RB) interferometric beat noises. Here, only a single wavelength is needed at the central office (CO) to generate the downstream baseband data for optical wired application and optical millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal for wireless application. The upstream signal is produced by remodulating the downstream signal. No optical filter is required at the optical network unit/remote antenna unit (ONU/RAU) to separate the optical wired and optical mm-wave signals. In the proposed network, 10 Gb/s differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signal is used for the downstream optical wired application and 2.5 Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) signal on 20 GHz carrier is used for the optical mm-wave signal. In each ONU, a reflective optical semiconductor amplifier (RSOA) is used to remodulate and produce a 2.5 Gb/s OOK format for upstream traffic. As the back-refection produced by the downstream DPSK signal and the upstream OOK signal is traveling in different fiber path, RB noise at the CO can be completely mitigated.

Abstract
Long-reach passive optical network (LR-PON) is considered as a promising technology towards higher capacity and extended coverage optical system. We propose and demonstrate a LR-PON with the capability of Rayleigh backscattering (RB) noise mitigation. By using the upstream signal wavelength-transition generated by a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) based colorless optical networking unit (ONU), the spectral overlap among the upstream signal and the RB noises can be minimized. Hence, due to the achievement of effective RB mitigation, a 100 km LR-PON with a high split-ratio of 512 is demonstrated using 10 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) downstream and 2.5 Gb/s NRZ upstream signals. Detail analysis of the wavelength-transition generation is presented.

Abstract
Chlorella is a type of unicellular fresh water algae. In an attempt to develop new agents for handling insulin resistance, Chlorella was employed to screen the effect on insulin resistance in rats induced by fructose-rich chow. A single oral administration of Chlorella for 90 min decreased the plasma glucose in a dose-dependent manner in rats receiving 4-week fructose-rich chow. In addition, chronic treatment with Chlorella for 15 days also lowered plasma glucose in the same manner. Then, the insulin action on glucose disposal rate was measured using the glucose-insulin index, values of the areas under the curves of glucose and insulin during the intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IPGTT). Oral administration (three times daily for 5 days) of Chlorella to rats receiving 4 weeks of fructose-rich chow abolished the elevated value of the glucose-insulin index, indicating that Chlorella has an ability to improve insulin resistance. An increase of insulin sensitivity by Chlorella was further evaluated using the plasma glucose lowering action of exogenous insulin in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats (STZ-diabetic rats). Oral administration of Chlorella three times daily to STZ-diabetic rats increased the response to exogenous insulin 15 days later. The obtained results suggest that oral administration of Chlorella has the ability to improve insulin sensitivity, which may be used as an adjuvant therapy for patients with insulin resistance.

Abstract
As different high speed signal-remodulation wavelength division multiplexed--passive optical network (WDM-PON) solutions up to 10 Gb/s have been proposed, researchers are going to further increase the data rate of PON towards 40 Gb/s or higher. However, scaling up from 10 Gb/s/wavelength to 40 Gb/s/wavelength PON is very challenging. Although many studies have been performed on upgrading the exiting 10 Gb/s network to 40 Gb/s, the study of the 40 Gb/s signal-remodulation network is very little. In this work, we will first study the chromatic dispersion effect on the signal-remodulation PON. Then, we will propose and demonstrate a signal-remodulation PON using 40-Gb/s downstream differential-phase shift keying (DPSK) and 40-Gb/s upstream on-off keying (OOK) signals. By using the reduced modulation index (RMI) of the downstream DPSK signal, the tolerance to the residual chromatic dispersion of the whole system can be greatly enhanced. Due to the reduced impact of the accumulated chromatic dispersion, the quality of the upstream remodulated OOK signal can be significantly improved. Besides, by detecting the downstream demodulated DPSK signal at the destructive output port of the demodulator, good quality of the demodulated DPSK signal can still be achieved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pro-inflammatory cytokines and free radicals damage renal tissue leading to acute kidney injury (AKI) during sepsis. Bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7) represses tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced inflammatory responses and protects kidney from injury. The sedative agent, propofol, has immunomodulatory and antioxidative properties. The present study investigated whether propofol could reduce AKI in caecal ligation and puncture (CLP) mice and the possible mechanism behind this. METHODS Mice were treated with propofol or saline immediately and 12 h after CLP surgery. Kidney injury, survival and cytokine expressions of CLP mice were observed 24 h after CLP surgery. In vitro, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated rat mesangial cells (RMCs) or hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2))-exposed murine kidney epithelial cells (M1) were treated with propofol. The expression of BMP-7, TNF-α and monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1 in CLP mice kidney, RMCs or M1 cells was determined by RT-PCR. Free radical generation and cell death of RMCs and M1 cells were analysed. Nuclear factor (NF)-κB and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ expressions in LPS-stimulated RMCs were determined by western blotting. RESULTS Propofol increased survival and ameliorated AKI in CLP mice. Propofol increased BMP-7 expression but decreased TNF-α and MCP-1 expressions in the kidney of CLP mice and LPS-stimulated RMCs. Propofol also inhibited free radical generation and cell death in LPS-stimulated RMCs and decreased the TNF-α expression and cell death in H(2)O(2)-exposed M1 cells. Moreover, propofol decreased NF-κB but increased PPAR-γ expression in LPS-stimulated RMCs. CONCLUSIONS Propofol treatment could protect kidney from sepsis-induced AKI by increasing BMP-7 expression, decreasing inflammatory cytokines and inhibiting oxidative stress.
