The influence of distributive justice on job attitudes and life satisfaction of hotel workers

This study uses the social exchange and spillover theories to examine the interrelationships between distributive justice, work attitudes, and life satisfaction of hotel employees in Accra, Ghana. Paper-and-pencil questionnaires were used to collect data from 321 respondents after which descriptive statistics and partial least square structural equation modelling were used to analyse the data. Distributive justice and work attitudes were positively related to the life satisfaction levels of hotel employees. This study adds to the scant literature on how workplace goings-on spillover to affect the life satisfaction of hotel workers. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

Increasing Quality and Frequency of Goals-of-Care Documentation in the Highest-Risk Surgical Candidates: One-Year Results of the Surgical Pause Program

Patient values may be obscured when decisions are made under the circumstances of constrained time and limited counseling. The objective of this study was to determine if a multidisciplinary review aimed at ensuring goal-concordant treatment and perioperative risk assessment in high-risk orthopaedic trauma patients would increase the quality and frequency of goals-of-care documentation without increasing the rate of adverse events.

Methods

We prospectively analyzed a longitudinal cohort of adult patients treated for traumatic orthopaedic injuries that were neither life- nor limb-threatening between January 1, 2020, and July 1, 2021. A rapid multidisciplinary review termed a "surgical pause" (SP) was available to those who were ≥80 years old, were nonambulatory or had minimal ambulation at baseline, and/or resided in a skilled nursing facility, as well as upon clinician request. Metrics analyzed include the proportion and quality of goals-of-care documentation, rate of return to the hospital, complications, length of stay, and mortality. Statistical analysis utilized the Kruskal-Wallis rank and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests for continuous variables and the likelihood-ratio chi-square test for categorical variables.

Results

A total of 133 patients were either eligible for the SP or referred by a clinician. Compared with SP-eligible patients who did not undergo an SP, patients who underwent an SP more frequently had goals-of-care notes identified (92.4% versus 75.0%, p = 0.014) and recorded in the appropriate location (71.2% versus 27.5%, p < 0.001), and the notes were more often of high quality (77.3% versus 45.0%, p < 0.001). Mortality rates were nominally higher among SP patients, but these differences were not significant (10.6% versus 5.0%, 5.1% versus 0.0%, and 14.3% versus 7.9% for in-hospital, 30-day, and 90-day mortality, respectively; p > 0.08 for all).

Conclusions

The pilot program indicated that an SP is a feasible and effective means of increasing the quality and frequency of goals-of-care documentation in high-risk operative candidates whose traumatic orthopaedic injuries are neither life- nor limb-threatening. This multidisciplinary program aims for goal-concordant treatment plans that minimize modifiable perioperative risks.

Self-efficacy and academic programme satisfaction: mediating effect of meaningfulness of study

Purpose

The paper examined the mediating effect of meaningfulness of study on the relation between self-efficacy and academic programme satisfaction within higher education setup.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 376 randomly selected students took part in the study by completing a self-reported survey. Data were analysed using PLS-SEM.

Findings

Results suggest self-efficacy and meaningfulness of studies positively predict student's satisfaction with academic programme. Besides, meaningfulness of study mediates the relation between self-efficacy and student's satisfaction of academic programme.

Originality/value

This study is one of the first to provide empirical evidence of the influence of meaningfulness of studies on self-efficacy and student academic programme satisfaction in the higher education context.

Current and future trade in livestock products

Rising per capita consumption, economic growth, and urbanisation, particularly in developing countries, have been driving an increased global demand for food. These changing socio-economic trends, which have greatly influenced changes in dietary patterns globally and, more specifically, have increased consumption of livestock products in developing countries, are expected to endure and to place new pressures on livestock-sector infrastructure and the delivery of veterinary services. This paper summarises current trade in meat and presents plausible projections for the future. It highlights the impact of animal disease on trade and considers the effect of ongoing disease outbreaks, particularly the outbreaks of African swine fever and COVID-19, on current and future trade dynamics. The authors analysed published statistics on the demand for, and international trade in, livestock products at national and regional levels and made projections of the same up to 2050, generated from an integrated model of the global agricultural and food system. The resulting analyses identified patterns of trade consistent with growing populations, increasing incomes and changing diets in developing countries. The analyses also pointed to slow expansion of livestock production, and the impacts of countries' disease status on livestock trade. For most of the livestock products analysed, economic model projections indicate increased consolidation of production and exports among a few countries. Marked increases in the trade in livestock products suggest a changing role for Veterinary Services in facilitating trade and extension in the years to come.

POS1097 TREATMENT KNOWLEDGE AND PREFERENCES FOR BLACK PEOPLE WITH HIP AND KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW AND META-ANALYSIS

Background:

Black people are less likely to undergo total joint arthroplasties, despite reporting more severe symptoms. (1) While racial disparities exist in treatment utilization for osteoarthritis, comprehensive studies of the treatment preferences of Black people have not been conducted.

Objectives:

The purpose of this manuscript is to systematically review the literature and identify Black osteoarthritis patients’ treatment preferences to understand how they may contribute to racial differences in the utilization of different treatment options.

Methods:

Searches ran on April 8, 2019 and April 7, 2020 in the following databases: Ovid MEDLINE (ALL - 1946 to Present); Ovid EMBASE (1974 to present); and The Cochrane Library (Wiley). Using the Patient/Population-Intervention-Comparison/Comparator-Outcome (PICO) format, our population of interest was Black people with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis, our intervention was preferences and opinions about treatment options for osteoarthritis, our comparator was white people with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis, and our outcome was preferences of osteoarthritis therapies. The protocol was registered under the PROSPERO international register, and the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed.

Results:

Searches across the chosen databases retrieved 10,894 studies after de-duplication, 182 full text, and 31 selected for inclusion in this review. Black people were less likely to use NSAIDs or narcotic analgesics compared to white people. (Figure 1) Black people were more likely than white people to use spirituality and prayer, as well as topical treatments. Utilization of meditation, supplement/vitamin use, and hot/cold treatments was not significantly different between groups. Black people were less willing than white people to consider or undergo joint replacements, even if the procedure was needed and recommended by a physician.

Conclusion:

Racial differences persist in OA care across the spectrum of options. Future interventions should focus on providing accessible information surrounding treatment options and targeting perceptions of the importance of joint health.
