Nanoscale Structure-Property Relations in Self-Regulated Polymer-Grafted Nanoparticle Composite Structures

Using a model system of poly(methyl methacrylate)-grafted silica nanoparticles (PMMA-NP) and poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (SAN), we generate unique polymer nanocomposite (PNC) morphologies by balancing the degree of surface enrichment, phase separation, and wetting within the films. Depending on the annealing temperature and time, thin films undergo different stages of phase evolution, resulting in homogeneously dispersed systems at low temperatures, enriched PMMA-NP layers at the PNC interfaces at intermediate temperatures, and three-dimensional bicontinuous structures of PMMA-NP pillars sandwiched between two PMMA-NP wetting layers at high temperatures. Using a combination of atomic force microscopy (AFM), AFM nanoindentation, contact angle goniometry, and optical microscopy, we show that these self-regulated structures lead to nanocomposites with increased elastic modulus, hardness, and thermal stability compared to analogous PMMA/SAN blends. These studies demonstrate the ability to reliably control the size and spatial correlations of both the surface-enriched and phase-separated nanocomposite microstructures, which have attractive technological applications where properties such as wettability, toughness, and wear resistance are important. In addition, these morphologies lend themselves to substantially broader applications, including: (1) structural color applications, (2) tuning optical adsorption, and (3) barrier coatings.

Understanding Gas Transport in Polymer-Grafted Nanoparticle Assemblies

We rationalize the unusual gas transport behavior of polymer-grafted nanoparticle (GNP) membranes. While gas permeabilities depend specifically on the chemistry of the polymers considered, we focus here on permeabilities relative to the corresponding pure polymer which show interesting, "universal" behavior. For a given NP radius, R_c, and for large enough areal grafting densities, σ, to be in the dense brush regime we find that gas permeability enhancements display a maximum as a function of the graft chain molecular weight, M_n. Based on a recently proposed theory for the structure of a spherical brush in a melt of GNPs, we conjecture that this peak permeability occurs when the densely grafted polymer brush has the highest, packing-induced extension free energy per chain. The corresponding brush thickness is predicted to be h max = 3 R c , independent of chain chemistry and σ, i.e., at an apparently universal value of the NP volume fraction (or loading), ϕ_NP, ϕ_NP,max = [R_c/(R_c + h_max)]³ ≈ 0.049. Motivated by this conclusion, we measured CO_-2 and CH₄ permeability enhancements across a variety of R_c, M_n and σ, and find that they behave in a similar manner when considered as a function of ϕ_NP, with a peak in the near vicinity of the predicted ϕ_NP,max. Thus, the chain length dependent extension free energy appears to be the critical variable in determining the gas permeability for these hybrid materials. The emerging picture is that these curved polymer brushes, at high enough σ behave akin to a two-layer transport medium - the region in the near vicinity of the NP surface is comprised of extended polymer chains which speed-up gas transport relative to the unperturbed melt. The chain extension free energy increases with increasing chain length, up to a maximum, and apparently leads to an increasing gas permeability. For long enough grafts, there is an outer region of chain segments that is akin to an unperturbed melt with slow gas transport. The permeability maximum and decreasing permeability with increasing chain length then follow naturally.

Effect of Nanoscale Confinement on Polymer-Infiltrated Scaffold Metal Composites

Most research on polymer composites has focused on adding discrete inorganic nanofillers to a polymer matrix to impart properties not found in polymers alone. However, properties such as ion conductivity and mechanical reinforcement would be greatly improved if the composite exhibited an interconnected network of inorganic and polymer phases. Here, we fabricate bicontinuous polymer-infiltrated scaffold metal (PrISM) composites by infiltrating polymer into nanoporous gold (NPG) films. Polystyrene (PS) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) films are infiltrated into the ∼43 nm diameter NPG pores via capillary forces during thermal annealing above the polymer glass transition temperature (T_g). The infiltration process is characterized in situ using spectroscopic ellipsometry. PS and P2VP, which have different affinities for the metal scaffold, exhibit slower segmental dynamics compared to their bulk counterparts when confined within the nanopores, as measured through T_g. The more attractive P2VP shows a 20 °C increase in T_g relative to its bulk, while PS only shows a 6 °C increase at a comparable molecular weight. The infiltrated polymer, in turn, stabilizes the gold nanopores against temporal coarsening. The broad tunability of these polymer/metal hybrids represents a unique template for designing functional network composite structures with applications ranging from flexible electronics to fuel cell membranes.

Grafted Nanoparticle Surface Wetting during Phase Separation in Polymer Nanocomposite Films

Wetting of polymer-grafted nanoparticles (NPs) in a polymer nanocomposite (PNC) film is driven by a difference in surface energy between components as well as bulk thermodynamics, namely, the value of the interaction parameter, χ. The interplay between these contributions is investigated in a PNC containing 25 wt % polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-grafted silica NPs (PMMA-NPs) in poly(styrene-ran-acrylonitrile) (SAN) upon annealing above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST, 160 °C). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies show that the areal density of particles increases rapidly and then approaches 80% of that expected for random close-packed hard spheres. A slightly greater areal density is observed at 190 °C compared to 170 °C. The PMMA-NPs are also shown to prevent dewetting of PNC films under conditions where the analogous polymer blend is unstable. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging shows that PMMA-NPs symmetrically wet both interfaces and form columns that span the free surface and substrate interface. Using grazing-incidence Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (GI-RBS), the PMMA-NP surface excess (Z*) initially increases rapidly with time and then approaches a constant value at longer times. Consistent with the areal density, Z* is slightly greater at deeper quench depths, which is attributed to the more unfavorable interactions between the PMMA brush and SAN segments. The Z* values at early times are used to determine the PMMA-NP diffusion coefficients, which are significantly larger than theoretical predictions. These studies provide insights into the interplay between wetting and phase separation in PNCs and can be utilized in nanotechnology applications where surface-dependent properties, such as wettability, durability, and friction, are important.

Wavelength-Dependent Photothermal Imaging Probes Nanoscale Temperature Differences among Subdiffraction Coupled Plasmonic Nanorods

Plasmonic structures confine electromagnetic energy at the nanoscale, resulting in local, inhomogeneous, controllable heating, but reading out the temperature using optical techniques poses a difficult challenge. Here, we report on the optical thermometry of individual gold nanorod trimers that exhibit multiple wavelength-dependent plasmon modes resulting in measurably different local temperature distributions. Specifically, we demonstrate how photothermal microscopy encodes different wavelength-dependent temperature profiles in the asymmetry of the photothermal image point spread function. These asymmetries are interpreted through companion numerical simulations to reveal how thermal gradients within the trimer can be controlled by exciting its hybridized plasmon modes. We also find that plasmon modes that are optically dark can be excited by focused laser beam illumination, providing another route to modify thermal profiles beyond wide-field illumination. Taken together these findings demonstrate an all-optical thermometry technique to actively create and measure nanoscale thermal gradients below the diffraction limit.

Tuning Selectivities in Gas Separation Membranes Based on Polymer-Grafted Nanoparticles

Polymer membranes are critical to many sustainability applications that require the size-based separation of gas mixtures. Despite their ubiquity, there is a continuing need to selectively affect the transport of different mixture components while enhancing mechanical strength and hindering aging. Polymer-grafted nanoparticles (GNPs) have recently been explored in the context of gas separations. Membranes made from pure GNPs have higher gas permeability and lower selectivity relative to the neat polymer because they have increased mean free volume. Going beyond this ability to manipulate the mean free volume by grafting chains to a nanoparticle, the conceptual advance of the present work is our finding that GNPs are spatially heterogeneous transport media, with this free volume distribution being easily manipulated by the addition of free polymer. In particular, adding a small amount of appropriately chosen free polymer can increase the membrane gas selectivity by up to two orders of magnitude while only moderately reducing small gas permeability. Added short free chains, which are homogeneously distributed in the polymer layer of the GNP, reduce the permeability of all gases but yield no dramatic increases in selectivity. In contrast, free chains with length comparable to the grafts, which populate the interstitial pockets between GNPs, preferentially hinder the transport of the larger gas and thus result in large selectivity increases. This work thus establishes that we can favorably manipulate the selective gas transport properties of GNP membranes through the entropic effects associated with the addition of free chains.

Kinetic Monitoring of Block Copolymer Self-Assembly Using In Situ Spectroscopic Ellipsometry

Understanding the kinetic pathways of self-assembly in block copolymers (BCPs) has been a long-standing challenge, mostly due to limitations of in situ monitoring techniques. Here, we demonstrate an approach that uses optical birefringence, determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), as a measure of domain formation in cylinder- and lamellae-forming BCP films. The rapid experimental acquisition time in SE (ca. 1 sec) enables monitoring of the assembly/disassembly kinetics of BCP films during solvent-vapor annealing (SVA). We demonstrate that upon SVA, BCP films form ordered domains that are stable in the swollen state, but disorder upon rapid drying. Surprisingly, the disassembly during drying strongly depends on the duration of solvent exposure in the swollen state, explaining previous observations of loss of order in SVA processes. SE thus allows for decoupling of BCP self-assembly and disordering that occurs during solvent annealing and solvent evaporation, which is difficult to probe using other, slower techniques.

Designing exceptional gas-separation polymer membranes using machine learning

The field of polymer membrane design is primarily based on empirical observation, which limits discovery of new materials optimized for separating a given gas pair. Instead of relying on exhaustive experimental investigations, we trained a machine learning (ML) algorithm, using a topological, path-based hash of the polymer repeating unit. We used a limited set of experimental gas permeability data for six different gases in ~700 polymeric constructs that have been measured to date to predict the gas-separation behavior of over 11,000 homopolymers not previously tested for these properties. To test the algorithm's accuracy, we synthesized two of the most promising polymer membranes predicted by this approach and found that they exceeded the upper bound for CO₂/CH₄ separation performance. This ML technique, which is trained using a relatively small body of experimental data (and no simulation data), evidently represents an innovative means of exploring the vast phase space available for polymer membrane design.

High-Frequency Mechanical Behavior of Pure Polymer-Grafted Nanoparticle Constructs

Polymer-grafted nanoparticle (GNP) membranes show increased gas permeability relative to pure polymer analogs, with this effect evidently tunable through systematic variations in the grafted polymer chain length and grafting density. Additionally, these materials show less deleterious aging effects relative to the pure polymer. To better understand these issues, we explore the solid-state mechanical properties of GNP layers using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) spectroscopy, which operates under conditions (≈5 MHz) that we believe are relevant to gas transport. The GNP's high-frequency storage moduli exhibit a characteristic increase with increasing nanoparticle (NP) core loading, consistent with past work on the reinforcement of polymers physically well mixed with bare NPs. However, these GNPs show a substantial, nonmonotonic decrease in loss as a function of chain length (at fixed grafting density), with the loss minimum corresponding to the chain length with the maximum gas permeability. We speculate that this feature corresponds to a dynamical transition, where the GNP membranes go from a jammed solid (colloid-like) to liquid-like (polymer-controlled) behavior with increasing chain length.
