Abstract
The Aspergillus series Nigri contains biotechnologically and medically important species. They can produce hazardous mycotoxins, which is relevant due to the frequent occurrence of these species on foodstuffs and in the indoor environment. The taxonomy of the series has undergone numerous rearrangements, and currently, there are 14 species accepted in the series, most of which are considered cryptic. Species-level identifications are, however, problematic or impossible for many isolates even when using DNA sequencing or MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, indicating a possible problem in the definition of species limits or the presence of undescribed species diversity. To re-examine the species boundaries, we collected DNA sequences from three phylogenetic markers (benA, CaM and RPB2) for 276 strains from series Nigri and generated 18 new whole-genome sequences. With the three-gene dataset, we employed phylogenetic methods based on the multispecies coalescence model, including four single-locus methods (GMYC, bGMYC, PTP and bPTP) and one multilocus method (STACEY). From a total of 15 methods and their various settings, 11 supported the recognition of only three species corresponding to the three main phylogenetic lineages: A. niger, A. tubingensis and A. brasiliensis. Similarly, recognition of these three species was supported by the GCPSR approach (Genealogical Concordance Phylogenetic Species Recognition) and analysis in DELINEATE software. We also showed that the phylogeny based on benA, CaM and RPB2 is suboptimal and displays significant differences from a phylogeny constructed using 5 752 single-copy orthologous proteins; therefore, the results of the delimitation methods may be subject to a higher than usual level of uncertainty. To overcome this, we randomly selected 200 genes from these genomes and performed ten independent STACEY analyses, each with 20 genes. All analyses supported the recognition of only one species in the A. niger and A. brasiliensis lineages, while one to four species were inconsistently delimited in the A. tubingensis lineage. After considering all of these results and their practical implications, we propose that the revised series Nigri includes six species: A. brasiliensis, A. eucalypticola, A. luchuensis (syn. A. piperis), A. niger (syn. A. vinaceus and A. welwitschiae), A. tubingensis (syn. A. chiangmaiensis, A. costaricensis, A. neoniger and A. pseudopiperis) and A. vadensis. We also showed that the intraspecific genetic variability in the redefined A. niger and A. tubingensis does not deviate from that commonly found in other aspergilli. We supplemented the study with a list of accepted species, synonyms and unresolved names, some of which may threaten the stability of the current taxonomy. Abstract
Objective: To investigate the occupational stress status of air traffic controllers (ATC) and analyze its influencing factors. Methods: By using cluster sampling method, 457 ATCs in an air traffic management bureau were selected as the investigation objects. The job content questionnaire (JCQ) and the effort reward imbalance questionnaire (ERI) were used to measure work requirements independent imbalance type and ERI type occupational stress separately and analyze the influencing factors. Results: Of the 457 ATCs, 81.84% (374/457) ATGs had work requirements independent imbalance type of occupational stress and 84.46% (386/457) ATGs had ERI type occupational stress. Univariate analysis showed that the factors of marital status, degree of education, age, length of service, title, job post, family monthly income, views on regular training, occurrence of emergency or unsafe events in last month and monthly night shift frequency had various degrees of influence on the different factor scores of JCQ and ERI (P<0.01) . Logistic regression analysis showed that the level of JCQ type occupational stress of ATCs with junior titles and probationers was higher than those of intermediate/senior titles (P=0.000, 0.000) ; The ERI type occupational stress of probationers and junior titles ATCs was lower than those with intermediate/senior titles (P=0.000) . The ERI and JCQ type occupational stress level of tower post ATCs was higher than that of other two job post ATCs (P=0.001, 0.000, 0.000, 0.000) . The ATCs considering regular training had more disadvantages than advantages showed lower ERI type occupational stress level than those considering more advantages than disadvantages (P=0.000) . The ERI type occupational stress level of ATCs who experienced emergency or unsafe events in last month was higher than those who didn't (P=0.007) . Conclusion: A large proportion of ATCs had occupational stress. Management should adjust its policies and pay were attention to occupational stress of ATLs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the prognostic value and potential therapeutic target of the baseline serum hormones in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with abiraterone. METHODS This retrospective study was performed in patients with mCRPC receiving abiraterone acetate (AA) from July 2016 to September 2020. Patients who had serum hormone tests within 2 weeks before AA treatment were included. Univariate analysis and Cox regression were performed to evaluate the correlation of sex hormones with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Prolactin (PRL) expression in the clinical specimens was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Bone metastases were quantified by automated Bone Scan Index (aBSI). RESULTS The study included 61 patients with a median follow-up of 19.0 months. Patients with lower baseline PRL levels (median) responded better to AA than those with higher baseline PRL levels as indicated by prostate-specific antigen (PSA) reduction (PSA90, 66.7% vs. 25.8%, p = 0.001), PFS (19.6 vs. 7.9 months), and OS (52.8 vs. 19.2 months). Cox regression adjusted for clinical factors also confirmed that baseline PRL level was an independent predictive factor for PFS (hazard ratio = 1.096, p = 0.007). Prostatic PRL expression increased as the disease progressed. PRL expression was also detected in biopsy samples from bone metastasis but not in normal bone tissue, and the serum PRL levels were positively correlated with aBSIs (r = 0.28, p = 0.037). CONCLUSIONS Serum PRL levels are predictive of response to AA in patients with mCRPC. Serum PRL levels are positively correlated with the volume of metastatic bone disease.

Abstract
Prostate cancer (PCa) and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) are commonly encountered diseases in males. Studies showed that genetic factors are responsible for the occurrences of both diseases. However, the genetic association between them is still unclear. Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database can help determine the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between BPH and PCa. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis were utilized to find pathways DEGs enriched. The STRING database can provide a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and find hub genes in PPI network. R software was used to analyze the clinical value of hub genes in PCa. Finally, the function of these hub genes was tested in different databases, clinical samples, and PCa cells. Fifteen up-regulated and forty-five down-regulated genes were found from GEO database. Seven hub genes were found in PPI network. The expression and clinical value of hub genes were analyzed by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data. Except CXCR4, all hub genes expressed differently between tumor and normal samples. Exclude CXCR4, other hub genes have diagnostic value in predicting PCa and their mutations can cause PCa. The expression of CSRP1, MYL9 and SNAI2 changed in different tumor stage. CSRP1 and MYH11 could affect disease-free survival (DFS). Same results reflected in different databases. The expression and function of MYC, MYL9, and SNAI2, were validated in clinical samples and PCa cells. In conclusion, seven hub genes among sixty DEGs may be achievable targets for predicting which BPH patients may later develop PCa and they can influence the progression of PCa.

Abstract
Novel strategies for prostate cancer therapy are required to overcome resistance to abiraterone and enzalutamide. Here, we show that increasing 3βHSD1 after abiraterone and enzalutamide treatment is essential for drug resistance, and biochanin A (BCA), as an inhibitor of 3βHSD1, overcomes drug resistance. 3βHSD1 activity increases in cell lines, biopsy samples, and patients after long-term treatment with enzalutamide or abiraterone. Enhanced steroidogenesis, mediated by 3βHSD1, is sufficient to impair enzalutamide function. In patients, accelerated abiraterone metabolism results in a decline of plasma abiraterone as disease progresses. BCA inhibits 3βHSD1 and suppresses prostate cancer development alone or together with abiraterone and enzalutamide. Daidzein, a BCA analog of dietary origin, is associated with higher plasma abiraterone concentrations and prevented prostate-specific antigen (PSA) increases in abiraterone-resistant patients. Overall, our results show that 3βHSD1 is a promising target to overcome drug resistance, and BCA suppresses disease progression as a 3βHSD1 inhibitor even after abiraterone and enzalutamide resistance.

Abstract
Androgens are essential for prostate cancer development. However, steroidogenesis has mainly been investigated in a limited number of prostate cancer cell lines, leading to varied conclusions and elusive clinical significance. Here, we established an ex vivo research platform with fresh biopsy samples transiently cultured with tritium- labelled androgens to trace steroidogenesis in prostate tissues and investigate its potential clinical application. DHEA was confirmed as the major precursor for androgen synthesis in the prostate. Significant amounts of oxidized DHEA and 5α-androstanedione were generated from DHEA in prostate biopsy samples. Prostatic steroidogenesis was independent of other clinical factors. Furthermore, prostatic steroidogenesis was suppressed after androgen deprivation therapy but increased upon treatment resistance, indicating that prostatic steroidogenesis was affected by clinical treatments. Overall, we provide an accessible research platform to characterize steroidogenesis in prostate tissue and indicate the correlation between prostatic steroidogenesis and disease progression.

Abstract
3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is a powerfully addictive psychostimulant with pronounced effects on the central nervous system, but the precise mechanism of MDMA-induced toxicity remains unclear, specifically on the retina. This study was performed to investigate the effects of MDMA treatment on the retina and explore the underlying mechanism. C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into control and MDMA groups. Mice were treated with MDMA at progressively increasing doses (1-6 mg/kg) intraperitoneally 4 times per day. Electroretinography was used to test the retinal function. Pathological changes of the retina were examined by toluidine blue staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end labeling assay. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to measure the levels of cytokines in the retina. Real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot were used to measure gene and protein expression in the retina, respectively. Our study showed that MDMA treatment impaired retinal function and decreased retinal thickness. MDMA treatment also increased transforming growth factor β as well as inflammatory factors in the retina. Moreover, MDMA treatment increased protein expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and decreased tight junction protein expression in the retina. Our study indicated that treatment of MDMA caused retinal damage in C57BL/6J mice, associated with an increase of MMPs and a decrease of tight junction proteins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a metabolic disease with a serious health burden in children and adults, and it induces a variety of conditions including subfecundity. Sleeve gastrectomy showed encouraging results in terms of weight loss and improve quality of life, and this study aimed to determine whether sleeve gastrectomy could reverse obesity-induced impaired fertility in male Sprague-Dawley rats. METHODS After 16 weeks of a chow diet (CD) or a high-fat diet (HFD) challenge, rats on the HFD were given a sleeve gastrectomy or sham operation and then fed an HFD for another 8 weeks. Serum glucose, insulin, lipids, sex hormone, sperm quality, inflammatory profile of the testis, and hypothalamic Kiss1 expression in the three study groups were compared. RESULTS Sleeve gastrectomy significantly decreased HFD-induced obesity and serum glucose and insulin levels. It also reversed the HFD-induced increase in teratozoospermia and decreases in sperm motility and progressive motility. Testicular morphological abnormalities were also improved after sleeve gastrectomy. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed that the expression of sex hormones increased after sleeve gastrectomy and that expression of inflammatory factors decreased. The HFD induced a hypothalamic inflammatory response that inhibited Kiss1 expression, which in turn mediated sex hormone expression. Sleeve gastrectomy treatment improved the hypothalamic response. CONCLUSIONS The results consistently showed that sleeve gastrectomy reversed obesity-induced male fertility impairment by decreasing the inflammatory responses of the testis and hypothalamus.

Abstract
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) POU3F3 is overexpressed in esophageal squamous-cell carcinomas, while its role in other human cancers is unclear. In this study we found that POU3F3 and rho-associated protein kinase 1 (ROCK1) were both increased in tumor tissues than in adjacent healthy tissues of patients with prostate carcinoma. Expression levels of POU3F3 increased with increase in the diameter of tumor but were not significantly affected by lymph node metastasis or distant metastasis. Expression levels of POU3F3 and ROCK1 were positive correlated in tumor tissues but not in adjacent healthy tissues. POU3F3 and ROCK1 overexpression promoted, while ROCK1 knockdown inhibited the proliferation of prostate carcinoma cells. ROCK1 knockdown reduced the enhancing effect of POU3F3 overexpression on cancer cell proliferation. POU3F3 overexpression led to ROCK1 overexpression in prostate carcinoma cells, while ROCK1 overexpression did not significantly affect POU3F3 expression. Therefore, lncRNA POU3F3 may promote cancer cell proliferation in prostate carcinoma by upregulating ROCK1.

Abstract
LnRNA-NEF has characterized functionality only in liver cancer. In the present study, we observed that plasma lnRNA-NEF was downregulated, while plasma transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) was upregulated in patients with early-stage prostate carcinoma (PC) than in healthy controls. The levels of plasma lnRNA-NEF and plasma TGF-β1 were inversely correlated in patients with PC but not in healthy controls. After surgical resection, the follow-up was performed for 5 years. It was observed that lnRNA-NEF was further decreased in patients with distant recurrence (DR), but not in patients with local recurrence and nonrecurrence. lnRNA-NEF overexpression caused inhibited TGF-β1 expression in cells of PC cell lines, while TGF-β1 overexpression failed to affect lnRNA-NEF expression. LnRNA-NEF overexpression inhibited, while the TGF-β1 overexpression promoted the migration and invasion of cells of PC cell lines. TGF-β1 overexpression partially rescued the inhibited migration and invasion of cells of PC cell lines caused by the lnRNA-NEF overexpression. Therefore, the downregulation of lnRNA-NEF may contribute to the postoperative DR in patients with PC through the interactions with TGF-β1.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the number and level of occult neck lymphatic metastasis for squamous cell carcinoma of tongue in clinical stage Ⅰ/Ⅱ, and the relationship between cell differentiation and occult neck lymphatic metastasis. Methods: A total of 101 cases diagnosed preoperatively as having squamous cell carcinoma of tongue in clinical stage Ⅰ/Ⅱ (cT1/T2N0M0) between January 2005 and April 2015 were analysed retrospectively. Whether presence of occult neck lymphatic metastasis in these cases was studied. Results: Occult neck lymphatic metastases were found in 22 (21.78%) of 101 cases, 10 men and 12 women, with an age range of 22 to 83 years. There was not statistically significant association between tumor size or cell differentiation and occult neck lymphatic metastasis (P>0.05). The metastasis occurred most commonly in level Ⅱ, followed by levelsⅠ, Ⅲ and Ⅳ. There was no lymph node metastasis in Level Ⅴ. There were total 20 cases with occult neck lymphatic metastasis in at least one of levelⅠ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ(90.9%), One of these case was skipping metastasis in level Ⅲ(4.6%). Conclusion: The early tongue cancer has a high rate of occult lymph metastasis, which occurs commonly in levels Ⅱ, Ⅰ and Ⅲ, but there is not significant association between the metastasis and tumor size or cell differentiation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the clinical effect of endoscopic minimal invasive surgery on posterior urethral stricture with false passage. Twenty-one patients suffering from posterior urethral stricture with false passage were involved in the study. All the patients received pre-operative urethrography and flexible cystoscopy to make sure that the distance between the blind end of the proximal normal urethra and the distal urethra was <1 cm. Ten patients received open operation and eleven patients underwent endoscopic minimally-invasive surgery. All the patients in both groups had their catheters removed 4 weeks after operations, and improvements in urination and incontinence were observed. Urethrography was performed and urine flow rate was measured 1 month after catheter removal. In the open-operation group, nine patients showed unobstructed urinary tracts in the urethrography, and one, after his catheter removal, experienced dysuresia, which was improved after urethral dilatation. In the minimally-invasive operation group, nine patients showed patent urinary tracts in the urethrography, and two experienced post-operation dysuresia, of whom, open-operation treatment and urethral dilatation were performed respectively. In the minimally-invasive operation group, the average urine flow rate was significantly increased. Patients in both groups obtained obvious improvement in post-operation urinary incontinence, and there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in urine flow rate and index for urinary incontinence. Endoscopic minimally-invasive operation had similar effects to open operation in treatment of posterior urethra stricture with <1 cm in length and false passage.

Abstract
Objective Evidence supports an important role for miR-203 in the regulation of the proliferation, migration and invasion of prostate cancer (PCa) cells. However, the exact mechanisms of miR-203 in PCa are not entirely clear. Methods We examined the expression of miR-203 in prostate cancer tissues, adjacent normal tissues, PCa cell lines and normal prostate epithelial cells by qRT-PCR. Then, the effects of miR-203 or Rap1A on proliferation, adhesion and invasion of PCa cells were assayed using CKK-8, adhesion analysis, and transwell invasion assays. Luciferase reporter assay was performed to assess miR-203 binding to Rap1A mRNA. Tumor growth was assessed by subcutaneous inoculation of cells into BALB/c nude mice. Results Here, we confirmed that the expression of miR-203 was significantly downregulated in prostate cancer specimens compared with matched adjacent normal prostate specimens. Mechanistic dissection revealed that miR-203 mediated cell proliferation, adhesion and invasion in vitro, and tumor growth in vivo, as evidenced by reduced RAC1, p-PAK1, and p-MEK1 expression. In addition, we identified Rap1A as a direct target suppressed by miR-203, and there was an inverse relationship between the expression of miR-203 and Rap1A in PCa. Knockdown of Rap1A phenocopied the effects of miR-203 on PCa cell growth and invasion. Furthermore, Rap1A over-expression in PCa cells partially reversed the effects of miR-203-expression on cell adhesion and invasion. Conclusions These findings provide further evidence that a crucial role for miR-203 in inhibiting metastasis of PCa through the suppression of Rap1A expression. Abstract
The activation of a complement system can aggravate the secondary injury after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, it was reported recently that the activation of a complement could have both a secondary injury and a neuroprotective effect, in which C5a is the most important factor, but there is no direct evidence for this dual effect of C5a after SCI. In order to investigate the potential neuroprotective effect of C5a after SCI, in this study ectogenic C5a was injected intraperitoneally before/after SCI in vivo, or administrated to mechanically injured neurones in vitro; following this, neurone apoptosis, neurite outgrowth, axonal regeneration and functional recovery were investigated. The in-vivo experiments indicated that, following treatment with C5a 24 h before or immediately after injury, locomotor function was impaired significantly. However, when treatment with C5a took place 24 h after injury, locomotor function improved significantly. In-vitro experiments indicated that a certain concentration of C5a (50-100 nM) could inhibit caspase-3-mediated neurone apoptosis by binding to its receptor CD88, and that it could even promote the neurite outgrowth of uninjured neurones. In conclusion, delayed post-injury administration of C5a within a certain concentration could exert its neuroprotective effect through inhibiting caspase-3-mediated neurone apoptosis and promoting neurite outgrowth of uninjured neurones as well. These data suggest that C5a may have opposite functions in a time- and concentration-dependent manner after SCI. The dual roles of C5a have to be taken into account when measures are taken to inhibit complement activation in order to promote regeneration after SCI.

Abstract
Carotid stenosis is a narrowing or constriction of the inner surface of the carotid artery, usually caused by atherosclerosis. In the past decades, carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS) has been developed into a credible option for the patients with carotid stenosis. However, restenosis remains a severe and unsolved issue after CAS treatment. Currently, the molecular mechanisms involved in the restenosis are still largely unclear. In this study, we found that the double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs) were induced by oxidative stress in the human carotid artery with restenosis by examining the level of γH2AX in the artery tissues. We further analyzed the activation of DNA damage repair pathways in the carotid restenosis. Our results suggest that non-homologues end joining (NHEJ), but not homologous recombination (HR), is mainly activated in the artery tissues with restenosis. Our results may provide clues to develop a new therapeutic strategy for carotid artery restenosis following CAS treatment.

Abstract
The activation of complement system can aggravate the secondary injury after spinal cord injury (SCI). Our previous study indicates that the interception of complement activation by C3 deficiency can reduce the secondary injury and improve the regeneration and functional recovery after SCI. However, recently, it was reported that C5a which was generated during the complement activation pathways also had a protective effect on neurons, but whether it has the similar effect after SCI is unknown. To investigate the possibility and mechanism of the protective effect of C5a on neurons, it is necessary to study the expression profiles of C5a and its receptor CD88 after SCI and the influence on their expression when C3 was knocked out. By immunohistochemistry and Western blot, we found that in wild-type (WT) mice, both the expression of C5a and its receptor CD88 increased significantly, and there were two peaks during their expression after SCI. However, in C3-deficient mice, the expression of C5a still increased after SCI, although it was lower than that in WT group at every time points after SCI, and the expression of CD88 remained stable. Our study suggests that the expressions of C5a and CD88 can be inhibited in different degrees after SCI when the activation of complement system is blocked through C3 deficiency, which can reduce the secondary injury caused by C5a after SCI on one hand but deprive neurons of the possible protective effect from C5a on the other hand.

Abstract
UNLABELLED What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Recent studies have indicated that high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is related to the development and progression of human carcinomas. However, further studies were required to confirm the roles played by HMGB1 in clinical prostate cancer treatment. We investigated the relationship between HMGB1 expression and the characteristics of prostate cancer, and also evaluated the significance of HMGB1 as a prognostic factor for biochemical recurrence-free survival after radical prostatectomy. OBJECTIVE • To investigate high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) expression in human prostate cancer (PC) cell lines and its prognostic significance after radical prostatectomy (RP). PATIENTS AND METHODS • Quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction and western blotting were used to detect HMGB1 mRNA and protein expression in PC cell lines. • Immunohistochemistry coupled with the tissue microarray technique was performed to evaluate HMGB1 protein expression in 168 primary prostatectomy tissue samples. • Clinicopathological features were compared between positive and negative HMGB1 protein expression groups. • Kaplan-Meier and multivariate Cox analyses were applied to determine the prognostic value of HMGB1 protein expression on biochemical recurrence (BCR) for patients with PC who were undergoing RP. RESULTS • There were three PC cells (DU145, PC-3 and LNCaP) with overexpression of HMGB1 mRNA and protein compared to the non-transformed immortalized prostate cell RWPE-1. • A total of 60.1% (101/168) of the PC samples appeared to have positive protein expression of HMGB1. • HMGB1 protein expression was correlated with some clinicopathological parameters, such as pathological stage (pT) (P= 0.011), Gleason score, preoperative prostate-specific antigen concentration and BCR (P < 0.001, respectively). • Positive HMGB1 immunostaining in patients with PC who were undergoing RP was significantly associated with poor median BCR-free survival (23.1 months vs 15.6 months) (P < 0.001). • Multivariate analysis indicated that HMGB1 protein expression was an independent prognostic factor for BCR-free survival after RP (hazard ratio = 2.348, 95% confidence interval = 1.373-6.361, P= 0.001). CONCLUSIONS • Up-regulation of HMGB1 mRNA and protein concentrations was confirmed in PC cells. • HMGB1 expression may contribute to the malignant progression of PC. • HMGB1 presents as a novel prognostic factor for BCR after RP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To clarify whether hypercholesterolaemia can increase vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs) through the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway, and whether a special angiotensin II receptor blocker, telmisartan, can attenuate VEGF expression induced by hypercholesterolaemia. METHODS Levels of VEGF expression, PI3K activity and angiogenesis in vitro were determined by various methods after HUVECs were incubated with hypercholesterolaemic serum or combined with telmisartan and/or wortmannin. RESULTS We found that hypercholesterolaemic serum (cholesterol > or = 0.08 mmol/L) can increase VEGF expression in HUVECs and that telmisartan cooperates with hypercholesterolaemic serum in promoting VEGF expression. The increased VEGF expression was associated with enhanced PI3K activity and could be significantly inhibited by wortmannin, a potent PI3K inhibitor. Likewise, hypercholesterolaemic serum significantly promoted angiogenesis in vitro, which could be inhibited when PI3K activity was suppressed. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that hypercholesterolaemic serum induces VEGF expression through PI3K in HUVECs and that telmisartan cooperates with hypercholesterolaemia in promoting VEGF expression.

Abstract
Patients with diabetic nephropathy have an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Paraoxonase (Pon1) is a high-density lipoprotein- (HDL) associated enzyme that protects low-density lipoprotein from oxidation and also protects against atherosclerosis. We investigated the relationship of serum Pon1 activity, Pon1 Q192R polymorphism and HDL-C level to type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD). DM patients (n = 56, F/M = 17/39, aged 64.5 +/- 7.5 years) and non-DM patients (n = 89, F/M = 28/61, aged 62.7 +/- 8.3 years) under HD were included in this study. Salt-stimulated serum Pon1 activities were measured using paraoxon as a substrate. Pon1 Q192R polymorphism was detected by the mutagenically separated polymerase chain reaction. DM patients on HD had significantly lower HDL-C levels and serum Pon1 activities than non-DM patients on HD (657 +/- 277 vs. 763 +/- 257 IU/l, p < 0.01). The distribution of Pon1 Q 192R genotypes in all subjects did not differ from that predicted from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Serum Pon1 activities in both DM and non-DM patients on HD were regulated by Pon1 Q192R polymorphism: RR > QR > QQ. However, the reduced Pon1 activities in DM patients on HD were related to DM independent of the Pon1 genotype: reduced Pon1 activity was related to DM in RR carriers. Serum Pon1 activities were positively correlated with HDL-C levels. The association between HDL-C and DM in hemodialyzed patients was independent of Pon1 activity as assessed by an analysis of variance. But the relation between Pon1 activity and DM was modified by HDL-C levels: significantly when HDL-C was below 50 mg/dl, but not significantly when HDL-C was above 50 mg/dl. The results of a logistic regression analysis show that reduced serum Pon1 activities and low HDL-C levels were additively associated with DM. In conclusion, Pon1 status and HDL levels are independently associated with DM in patients on hemodialysis and may contribute to the increased risk of CHD in diabetic nephropathy.

Abstract
Wavelet transform was applied to the processing of noisy signal in ICP-AES. The noise was successfully eliminated and smooth spectra were obtained. The ratios of signal-to-noise were enhanced, the accuracies of analytical results and the detection limits were improved.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize the experience in the diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma. METHODS Analysing the clinical data of 19 patients with pleural mesothelioma, including age, history of exposure to asbestos, clinical manifestations, imaging and laboratory examinations and metastases. RESULTS None of the 19 patients had history of exposure to asbestos. Eight cases(42.1%) had no obvious thoracodynia, 9 cases(47.4%) had pleural effusion limited to the right chest, and in 2 cases(10.5%) the brachialis plexus was involved, and in 1 case (5.3%) malignant mesothelial cells were detected in the pleural effusion. Pleural thickening or nodules were found in 13 cases on CT and in 9 cases by B ultrasonographic examination. CONCLUSION Exposure to asbestos is not the only cause of pleural mesothelioma. Chest pain is not always associated with pleural mesothelioma. CT and B ultrasonography are of good help in the diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma.
