Development and characterization of microsatellite markers of the eastern keelback mullet (Liza affinis)

Twenty-four polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for Liza affinis using a (GT)13-enriched genomic library. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 9, with a mean number of 6.250. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.417 to 1.000 and from 0.550 to 0.861, with an average of 0.859 and 0.779, respectively. Deviation from Hardy-Weinberg proportions was detected at three loci. Evidence of null alleles was found at two loci. These markers will be useful in further studies investigating the genetic variation and population structure of this species, and may provide insights into the maintenance and efficient management of eastern keelback mullet resources.

Note: A novel normalization scheme for laser-based plasma x-ray sources

A kHz repetition rate laser pump-X-ray probe system for ultrafast X-ray diffraction is set up based on a laser-driven plasma X-ray source. A simple and reliable normalization approach has been developed to minimize the impact of large X-ray pulse intensity fluctuation on data quality. It utilizes one single X-ray area detector to record both sample and reference signals simultaneously. Performance of this novel normalization method is demonstrated in reflectivity oscillation measurement of a superlattice sample at sub-ps resolution.

[Treatment of intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia of gastric mucosa with xiao wei yan powder]

138 cases of intestinal metaplasia (IM) and 104 cases of atypical hyperplasia (AH) of the gastric mucosa of chronic gastritis treated with Xiao Wei Yan Powder (XWYP) were reported. The diagnoses were based on the pathological examination of gastric antrum biopsy specimens. The cases were randomly divided into treated group and control group. The XWYP contained Smilax glabrae, Hedyotis diffusae, Taraxacum mongolicum, Caesalpinia sappan, Paeonia alba, Cyperus rotundus, Bletilla striata, Glycyrrhiza uralensis etc., and was prepared in powder form, taken orally 5-7g tid. After 2-4 months of administration, gastroscopic and pathological examinations were repeated.

RESULTS

In treated group, the total effective rate of IM was 91.3% and that of the AH was 92.16%, while in control group, they were 21.3% and 14.46% respectively (P < 0.01). It denoated that XWYP had marked therapeutic effects for IM and AH. The animal experiments revealed no toxic effect, so safety guarantee was provided for its clinical application.

Ten-year follow-up of esophageal cancer treated by radical radiation therapy: analysis of 869 patients

The 10-year follow-up 869 patients with esophageal cancer treated by radiation is presented with emphasis on treatment methods, and results. The survival rates declined as the staging of the lesion advanced (p less than 0.01). The results improve with the shortening of the lesion (p less than 0.005) in the absence of metastasis. The effect of radiation is closely related to the dose given. A booster dose of 5-10 Gy in addition to the conventional curative dose of 60-69 Gy may increase the long-term survival of this cancer. The causes of the external irradiation failure are mainly recurrence and out of control of disease. Also, the author has discussed the occurrence and prevention of some complications.
