The sea of quarks and antiquarks in the nucleon

The quark and gluon structure of the proton has been under intense experimental and theoretical investigation for five decades. Even for the distributions of the well-studied valence quarks, challenges such as the value of the down quark to up quark ratio at high fractional momenta remain. Much of the sea of quark-antiquark pairs emerges from the splitting of gluons and is well described by perturbative evolution in quantum chromodynamics. However, experiments confirm that there is a non-perturbative component to the sea that is not well understood and hitherto has been difficult to calculate with ab initio non-perturbative methods. This non-perturbative structure shows up, perhaps most directly, in the flavor dependence of the sea antiquark distributions. While some of the general trends can be reproduced by models, there are features of the data that do not seem to be well described. This article discusses the experimental situation, the status of calculations and models, and the directions where these studies will progress in the near future.

Measurement of angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons in p+p interactions at 800 GeV/c

We report a measurement of the angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons produced using an 800 GeV/c proton beam on a hydrogen target. The polar and azimuthal angular distribution parameters have been extracted over the kinematic range 4.5<m micromicro<15 GeV/c2 (excluding the Upsilon resonance region), 0<p T <4 GeV/c, and 0<x F<0.8. The p+p angular distributions are similar to those of p+d, and both data sets are compared with models which attribute the cos2varphi distribution either to the presence of the transverse-momentum-dependent Boer-Mulders structure function h1 perpendicular to 1 or to QCD effects. The data indicate the need to include QCD effects before reliable information on the Boer-Mulders function can be extracted. The validity of the Lam-Tung relation in p+p Drell-Yan data is also tested.

Measurement of Upsilon production for p + p and p + d interactions at 800 GeV/c

We report a high statistics measurement of Upsilon production with an 800 GeV/c proton beam on hydrogen and deuterium targets. The dominance of the gluon-gluon fusion process for Upsilon production at this energy implies that the cross section ratio, sigma(p+d-->Upsilon)/2sigma(p+p-->Upsilon), is sensitive to the gluon content in the neutron relative to that in the proton. Over the kinematic region 0<x(F)<0.6, this ratio is found to be consistent with unity, in striking contrast to the behavior of the Drell-Yan cross section ratio sigma(p+d)(DY)/2sigma(p+p)(DY). This result shows that the gluon distributions in the proton and neutron are very similar. The Upsilon production cross sections are also compared with the p+d and p+Cu cross sections from earlier measurements.

Measurement of angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons in p+d interactions at 800 GeV/c

We report a measurement of the angular distributions of Drell-Yan dimuons produced using an 800 GeV/c proton beam on a deuterium target. The muon angular distributions in the dilepton rest frame have been measured over the kinematic range 4.5<m{mu mu}<15 GeV/c{2}, 0<p{T}<4 GeV/c, and 0<x{F}<0.8. No significant cos2phi dependence is found in these proton-induced Drell-Yan data, in contrast with the situation for pion-induced Drell-Yan data. The data are compared with expectations from models which attribute the cos2phi distribution to a QCD vacuum effect or to the presence of the transverse-momentum-dependent Boer-Mulders structure function h{1}{perpendicular}. Constraints on the magnitude of the sea-quark h{1}{perpendicular} structure functions are obtained.

Angular distributions for (3,4)(Lambda)H bound states in the (3,4)He(e,e(')K+) reaction

The (3,4)(Lambda)H and (4)(Lambda)H hypernuclear bound states have been observed for the first time in kaon electroproduction on (3,4)He targets. The production cross sections have been determined at Q(2)=0.35 GeV2 and W=1.91 GeV. For either hypernucleus the nuclear form factor is determined by comparing the angular distribution of the (3,4)He(e,e(')K+)(3,4)(Lambda)H processes to the elementary cross section 1H(e,e K+)Lambda on the free proton, measured during the same experiment.

J/psi polarization in 800-GeV p-Cu interactions

We present measurements of the polarization of the J/psi produced in 800-GeV proton interactions with a copper target. Polarization of the J/psi is sensitive to the ccmacr; production and hadronization processes. A longitudinal polarization is observed at large x(F), while at small x(F) the state is produced essentially unpolarized or slightly transversely polarized. No significant variation of the polarization is observed versus p(T).

Longitudinal electroproduction of charged pions from (1)H, (2)H, and (3)He

Separated longitudinal and transverse cross sections for charged pion electroproduction from (1)H, (2)H, and (3)He were measured at Q(2) = 0.4 (GeV/c)(2) for two values of the invariant mass, W = 1.15 GeV and W = 1.60 GeV, in a search for a mass dependence which would signal the effect of nuclear pions. This is the first such study that includes recoil momenta significantly above the Fermi surface. The longitudinal cross section, if dominated by the pion-pole process, should be sensitive to nuclear pion currents. Comparisons of the longitudinal cross section target ratios to a quasifree calculation reveal a significant suppression in (3)He at W = 1.60 GeV. The W = 1.15 GeV results are consistent with simple estimates of the effect of nuclear pion currents, but are also consistent with pure quasifree production.

Measurement of the high energy two-body deuteron photodisintegration differential cross section

The first measurements of the d(gamma,p)n differential cross section at forward angles and photon energies above 4 GeV were performed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The results indicate evidence of an angular dependent scaling threshold. Results at straight theta(cm) = 37 degrees are consistent with the constituent counting rules for E(gamma) greater, similar 4 GeV, while those at 70 degrees are consistent with the constituent counting rules for E(gamma) greater, similar 1.5 GeV.

Observation of polarization in bottomonium production at square root of s = 38.8 GeV

We present a measurement of the polarization observed for bottomonium states produced in p-Cu collisions at square root of s = 38.8 GeV. The angular distribution of the decay dimuons of the Upsilon(1S) state shows no polarization at small values of the fractional longitudinal momentum x(F) and transverse momentum p(T) but significant positive transverse production polarization for either p(T)>1.8 GeV/c or for x(F)>0.35. The Upsilon(2S+3S) (unresolved) states show a large transverse production polarization at all values of x(F) and p(T) measured. These observations challenge NRQCD calculations of the polarization expected in the hadronic production of bottomonium states.

Evidence for valencelike quark-hadron duality

A newly obtained data sample of inclusive electron-nucleon scattering from both hydrogen and deuterium targets is analyzed. These JLab data span the nucleon resonance region up to four-momentum transfers of 5 (GeV/c)(2). The data are found to follow an average scaling curve. The inclusion of low-momentum transfer data yields a scaling curve resembling deep inelastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data, suggesting a sensitivity to valencelike structure only.

Experimental verification of quark-hadron duality

A newly obtained sample of inclusive electron-nucleon scattering data has been analyzed for precision tests of quark-hadron duality. The data are in the nucleon resonance region, and span the range 0. 3<Q2<5.0 (GeV/c)(2). Duality is observed both in limited and extended regions around the prominent resonance enhancements. Higher twist contributions to the F2 structure function are found to be small on average, even in the low Q2 regime of approximately 0.5 (GeV/c)(2). Using duality, an average scaling curve is obtained. In all cases, duality appears to be a nontrivial property of the nucleon structure function.

Measurement of differences between J/psi and psi(') suppression in p-A collisions

Measurements of the suppression of the yield per nucleon of J/psi and psi(') production for 800 GeV/ c protons incident on heavy nuclear targets, relative to light nuclear targets, have been made with very broad coverage in x(F) and p(T). The observed suppression is smallest at x(F) values of 0.25 and below, and increases at larger values of x(F). It is also strongest at small p(T). Substantial differences between psi(') and J/psi production are observed for the first time in p-A collisions. The suppression for psi(') production is stronger than that for J/psi for x(F) near zero, but becomes comparable to that for J/psi for x(F)>0.6.
