Abstract
Background and Purpose Balance deficits in people with Parkinson’s disease can affect any of the multiple systems encompassing balance control. Thus, identification of the specific deficit is crucial in customizing balance rehabilitation. The sensory organization test, a test of sensory integration for balance control, is sometimes used in isolation to identify balance deficits in people with Parkinson’s disease. More recently, the Mini-Balance Evaluations Systems Test, a clinical scale that tests multiple domains of balance control, has begun to be used to assess balance in patients with Parkinson’s disease. The purpose of our study was to compare the use of Sensory Organization Test and Mini-Balance Evaluations Systems Test in identifying balance deficits in people with Parkinson’s disease. Methods 45 participants (27M, 18F; 65.2 ± 8.2 years) with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease participated in the cross-sectional study. Balance assessment was performed using the Sensory Organization Test and the Mini-Balance Evaluations Systems Test. People were classified into normal and abnormal balance based on the established cutoff scores (normal balance: Sensory Organization Test >69; Mini-Balance Evaluations Systems Test >73). Results More subjects were classified as having abnormal balance with the Mini-Balance Evaluations Systems Test (71% abnormal) than with the Sensory Organization Test (24% abnormal) in our cohort of people with Parkinson’s disease. There were no subjects with a normal Mini-Balance Evaluations Systems Test score but abnormal Sensory Organization Test score. In contrast, there were 21 subjects who had an abnormal Mini-Balance Evaluations Systems Test score but normal Sensory Organization Test scores. Discussion and Conclusions Findings from this study suggest that investigation of sensory integration deficits, alone, may not be able to identify all types of balance deficits found in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Thus, a comprehensive approach should be used to test of multiple balance systems to provide customized rehabilitation.

Abstract
Malaria drug resistance contributes to up to a million annual deaths. Judicious deployment of new antimalarials and vaccines could benefit from an understanding of early molecular events that promote the evolution of parasites. Continuous in vitro challenge of Plasmodium falciparum parasites with a novel dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) inhibitor reproducibly selected for resistant parasites. Genome-wide analysis of independently-derived resistant clones revealed a two-step strategy to evolutionary success. Some haploid blood-stage parasites first survive antimalarial pressure through fortuitous DNA duplications that always included the DHODH gene. Independently-selected parasites had different sized amplification units but they were always flanked by distant A/T tracks. Higher level amplification and resistance was attained using a second, more efficient and more accurate, mechanism for head-to-tail expansion of the founder unit. This second homology-based process could faithfully tune DNA copy numbers in either direction, always retaining the unique DNA amplification sequence from the original A/T-mediated duplication for that parasite line. Pseudo-polyploidy at relevant genomic loci sets the stage for gaining additional mutations at the locus of interest. Overall, we reveal a population-based genomic strategy for mutagenesis that operates in human stages of P. falciparum to efficiently yield resistance-causing genetic changes at the correct locus in a successful parasite. Importantly, these founding events arise with precision; no other new amplifications are seen in the resistant haploid blood stage parasite. This minimizes the need for meiotic genetic cleansing that can only occur in sexual stage development of the parasite in mosquitoes. Malaria parasites kill up to a million people around the world every year. Emergence of resistance to drugs remains a key obstacle against elimination of malaria. In the laboratory, parasites can efficiently acquire resistance to experimental antimalarials by changing DNA at the target locus. This happens efficiently even for an antimalarial that the parasite has never encountered in a clinical setting. In this study, we formally demonstrate how parasites achieve this feat: first, individual parasites in a population of millions randomly amplify large regions of DNA between short sequence repeats of adenines (A) or thymines (T) that are peppered throughout the malaria parasite genome. The rare lucky parasite that amplifies DNA coding for the target of the antimalarial, along with dozens of its neighboring genes, gains an evolutionary advantage and survives. In a second step, to withstand increasing drug pressure and to achieve higher levels of resistance, each parasite line makes additional copies of this region. This second expansion does not rely on the random A/T-based DNA rearrangements but, instead, a more precise amplification mechanism that retains the unique signature of co-amplified genes created earlier in each parasite. Generation of multiple copies of the target genes in the parasite genome may be the beginning of other beneficial changes for the parasite, including the future acquisition of mutations.

Abstract
The numerical advantage of quantum Monte Carlo simulations of rigid bodies relative to the flexible simulations is investigated for some simple systems. The results show that if high frequency modes in molecular condensed matter are predominantly in the ground state, the convergence of path integral simulations becomes nonuniform. Rigid body quantum parallel tempering simulations are necessary to accurately capture thermodynamic phenomena in the temperature range where the dynamics are influenced by intermolecular degrees of freedom; the stereographic projection path integral adapted for quantum simulations of asymmetric tops is a significantly more efficient strategy compared with Cartesian coordinate simulations for molecular condensed matter under these conditions. The reweighted random series approach for stereographic path integral Monte Carlo is refined and implemented for the quantum simulation of water clusters treated as an assembly of rigid asymmetric tops.

Abstract
The approach to the ergodic limit in Monte Carlo simulations is studied using both analytic and numerical methods. With the help of a stochastic model, a metric is defined that enables the examination of a simulation in both the ergodic and nonergodic regimes. In the nonergodic regime, the model implies how the simulation is expected to approach ergodic behavior analytically, and the analytically inferred decay law of the metric allows the monitoring of the onset of ergodic behavior. The metric is related to previously defined measures developed for molecular dynamics simulations, and the metric enables the comparison of the relative efficiencies of different Monte Carlo schemes. Applications to Lennard-Jones 13-particle clusters are shown to match the model for Metropolis, J-walking, and parallel tempering based approaches. The relative efficiencies of these three Monte Carlo approaches are compared, and the decay law is shown to be useful in determining needed high temperature parameters in parallel tempering and J-walking studies of atomic clusters.

Abstract
The preparations of [(t-Bu)(2)InNEt(2)](2) and [(t-Bu)(2)InN(n-Bu)(2)](2) by the photoinduced reactions of (t-Bu)(3)In with Et(2)NSnMe(3) and (n-Bu)(2)NSnMe(3), respectively, have been investigated. The isolation and characterization of products other than [(t-Bu)(2)InNR(2)](2) in these reactions clearly indicate that the reactions of (t-Bu)(3)In with R(2)NSnMe(3) do not proceed by simple alkyltrimethyltin elimination. A possible radical mechanism for the formation of the byproducts has been suggested. X-ray crystallographic studies indicate that both compounds are dimeric in the solid state. Crystallographic data: for [(t-Bu)(2)InNEt(2)](2), orthorhombic space group Pbca (No. 61), a = 19.135(7) Å, b = 19.670(6) Å, c = 15.793(7) Å, V = 5944.41(5) Å(3), rho(calcd) = 1.346 g cm(-)(3); for [(t-Bu)(2)InN(n-Bu)(2)](2), triclinic space group P&onemacr; (No. 2), a = 11.943(2) Å, b = 15.790(1) Å, c = 10.711(3) Å, alpha = 98.60(1) degrees, beta = 103.54(2) degrees, gamma = 94.85(1) degrees, V = 1926 Å(3), rho(calcd) = 1.232 g cm(-)(3). Mass spectrometry data indicate that both compounds exist as dimers in the gaseous state.

Abstract
A rat model was established for evaluating the biology of locally recurring mammary tumors after surgical resection of the primary tumor. Eight distinct cell lines were independently derived from primary tumors and local recurrences after surgical removal of 13762NF rat mammary adenocarcinoma clone MTF7(T20). In vivo tumor doubling times between the "parental" MTF7(T20) cell line, primary tumor-derived cell lines sc1 and sc3, and the local recurrence (LR) sublines varied after the inoculation of 10(6) tumor cells into the mammary fat pad of female Fischer 344 rats. Doubling times were shorter for LR3, and LR4, LR5, and LR6 than their primaries sc3 and MTF7(T20), respectively, and longer for LR1 and LR1a than their primary tumor sc1. The LR sublines varied considerably for their experimental metastatic potentials. Both increases and decreases in metastatic potential were seen compared to MTF7(T20), sc1, and sc3. Karyotype analysis by G-banding revealed the presence in the LR sublines of several marker chromosomes, previously identified in MTF7 at tissue cultures 11 and 35. Two new chromosome markers were identified: M54, shared by MTF7(T20), sc1, LR4, LR5 and LR6, and M55, shared by MTF7(T20), sc1, LR1, sc3, LR3, LR4, and LR6. These data indicate that local tumor regrowth after surgical excision of the primary tumor in this model most likely selects the growth of tumor cell subpopulations already present within the primary tumor. Differences in growth kinetics, karyotype, and metastatic potential between the parental MTF7(T20), primary tumors sc1 and sc3, and their LR sublines may reflect in vivo influences on the phenotypic diversity generated during the development of local mammary tumor recurrences after surgical treatment of the primary tumor.

Abstract
The human promyelocytic leukemia cell line HL-60 overexpresses the c-myc protooncogene. A calculated secondary structure for c-myc mRNA placed the initiation codon in a bulge of a weakly base-paired region. Treatment of HL-60 cells with 5' d(AACGTTGAGGGGCAT) 3', complementary to the initiation codon and the next four codons of c-myc mRNA, inhibited c-myc protein expression in a dose-dependent manner. However, treatment of HL-60 cells with 5' d(TTGGGATAACACTTA) 3', complementary to nucleotides 17-31 of vesicular stomatitis virus matrix protein mRNA, displayed no such effects. These results agree with analogous studies of normal human T lymphocytes [Heikkila, R., Schwab, G., Wickstrom, E., Loke, S. L., Pluznik, D. H., Watt, R. & Neckers, L. M. (1987) Nature (London) 328, 445-449], except that only one-third as much oligomer was needed for a comparable effect. Proliferation of HL-60 cells in culture was inhibited in a sequence-specific, dose-dependent manner by the c-myc-complementary oligomer, but neither the oligomer complementary to vesicular stomatitis virus matrix protein mRNA nor 5' d(CATTTCTTGCTCTCC) 3', complementary to nucleotides 5399-5413 of human immunodeficiency virus tat gene mRNA, inhibited proliferation. It thus appears that antisense oligodeoxynucleotides added to myc-transformed cells via culture medium are capable of eliciting sequence-specific, dose-dependent inhibition of c-myc protein expression and cell proliferation.

Abstract
Important advances in the understanding of "random" processes have produced a variety of stochastic algorithms that offer unprecedented scope and utility in the study of physical systems. These algorithms represent a departure from the usual philosophy inherent in the study of many-body problems and have a number of significant features. Chief among these features are simplicity, weak dependence on dimensionality, and ease of transition between classical and quantum-mechanical descriptions. These methods are also readily adapted for use on massively paraliel computer architectures. These new stochastic methods represent a valuable addition to the tools available for the analysis of both equilibrium and time-dependent many-body problems.
