Abstract
Self-stabbing and self-cutting represents an uncommon method of suicide. We present a case of a 30-year-old man who was found dead in the forest. The body was naked and showed multiple cut and stab wounds on different parts of the body (face, neck, chest, abdomen, and extremities). A single-edged kitchen knife was found approximately 20 m from the body. Parts of both ears, the fifth toe of the right foot, and the scrotum were cut off. At the autopsy, two of the severed body parts-the toe and the part of the left ear-were found in the stomach. The cause of death was asphyxiation due to blood aspiration resulting from a cut throat injury. A police investigation uncovered a history of substance abuse and two previous suicidal attempts using a knife. Upon complex analysis of all the evidence, the manner of death was ruled a suicide, which was preceded by actions of major self-mutilation and self-cannibalism, both considered rare behavioral patterns.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to monitor the effects of dietary synbiotics on experimentally infected mice. Sixty mice were divided into the following three groups: negative control group C1, positive control group C2 (mice infected with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli O149:F4NAL), and experimental group LF (Lactobacillus reuteri CCM 8617RIF + 10% flaxseed + E. coli O149:F4NAL). Supplements were administered for 42 days. Microbiological, hematological, and biochemical analyses, electrophoretic analysis of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes, and analysis of fatty acids using gas chromatography and isotachophoresis were performed. We recorded higher numbers of jejunal and ileal lactic acid bacteria, lower Enterobacteriaceae counts in the feces of the animals, and an increased production of organic acids in the synbiotic-fed group. The supplements applied favored n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) metabolism and inhibited n-6 PUFA metabolism; thus, they influenced the n-6 to n-3 and eicosapentaenoic to arachidonic acid ratios. Additionally, the incorporation of n-3 PUFAs to the cell membrane decreased the activity of LDH, transaminases, and alkaline phosphatase. Results obtained in our study indicate the positive effect of continuous supplementation of combination of probiotic cheese enriched with L. reuteri CCM 8617RIF and crushed flaxseed on composition of intestinal microflora and alleviation of the course of infection induced by pathogenic bacterium E. coli O149:F4NAL.

Abstract
ABSTRACT In this article, we report the autopsy findings of a 48-year-old man who sustained blunt trauma to the thorax. A medical record review revealed no history of cardiac disease. He presented to the hospital with a computed tomography-verified fracture of the left fourth and fifth ribs, and pulmonary and cardiac contusion. He was released from the hospital in stable condition at his own request 7 days later. Because of sudden deterioration, he was readmitted to the hospital the next day. Electrocardiogram detected cardiac arrhythmia on the 15th day after chest trauma. Electrocardiography detected pericardial effusion and severe mitral insufficiency resulting in left ventricular failure. Death was attributed to diffuse alveolar damage-complicating pneumonia due to cardiac contusion with mitral insufficiency occurring 25 days after hospital admission. Internal examination revealed diffuse fibrinous pericarditis, left atrial tear right above the anterior mitral valve leaflet with intrapericardial granulation tissue, and no sign of myocardial damage. Immunohistochemistry showed significantly more CD68-positive macrophages within tissue taken from the heart, a finding indicative of previous atrial and ventricular myocardial contusion. This case report demonstrates that routine hematoxylin and eosin staining may not always reveal significant myocardial damage.

Abstract
In this paper, we report autopsy findings of a 1-day old full-term mature female neonate with pulmonary hypoplasia diagnosed postnatally. Death was attributed to acute respiratory failure due to hyaline membrane disease. We describe pathological features of calcified Meckels diverticulum with osseous metaplasia and inflammatory changes in adjacent peritoneum. As far as we know, this case report documents the youngest patient ever diagnosed with calcified Meckels diverticulum with osseous metaplasia.

Abstract
Among the captivating world of venomous snakes, an outstanding group of cobras from the family Elapidae is characterized by a distinctive structure of proteroglyphous venom apparatus that allows the ejection of venom from the fangs and formation of aerosol particles. The venom of "spitting" cobras is innocuous when sprayed over the intact skin, but contact with the eye surface is followed by ophthalmia and a temporary blindness, that may remain permanent, unless immediate and adequate medical interventions are carried out. The aim of this work was to monitor and evaluate induced vasoactive effects as well as embryotoxic effects with the regard to the whole crude venom of four "spitting" cobra species (African species Naja ashei and Naja nigricollis, Asian species Naja siamensis and Naja sumatrana). Vasoactive effects were visualized using the Hen's Egg Test - Chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM) test. The Chick Embryotoxicity Screening Test (CHEST) was used to estimate embryotoxicity and the data were then processed using statistical analysis. The highest embryonic mortality rate was observed after administration of venom from Naja nigricollis among the whole crude venoms tested. All tested venoms induced fast spreading of pathological alterations in the blood vessels on the chorioallantoic membrane. Our study discloses a detailed insight into microscopic level processes in venom-induced changes observed on the chicken embryos and on the vascular network in their chorioallantoic membrane. This article also highlights the increasing importance of the role of the chicken embryos and the importance of observing changes in the chorioallantoic membrane applied for toxicological and medical research as an appropriate alternative animal model in relation to 3R's principles.

Abstract
We present macroscopic and microscopic findings in a case of chronic dissecting aneurysm of ascending aorta and aortic arch associated with isolated tears of aortic wall without its rupture in a 71-year-old female presenting with minimal clinical symptomatology. Aneurysmal dilation of the aorta was caused not only by the bridging of the vascular wall based on the presence of an organizing intramural thrombus in the false lumen between the separated layers, but also by a wide flat defect in the aortic intima and media with the preservation of the aortic wall integrity due to fibrotical alteration of tunica adventicia. Histologic examination of the thoracic aorta detected cystic medial degeneration with mild atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare non-cancerous disease affecting the small bowel mesentery, which occurs predominantly in older age. The exact etiology is not known. Clinical symptoms are very variable and they include abdominal pain and distention, nausea, and vomiting. We present a case of a 4-month-old boy, who died suddenly at home. Based on the investigation of the circumstances of death, results of toxicology tests and histological examination the case was concluded as sudden infant death syndrome. During life, the child had repeated abdominal pain with distention. Secondary autopsy finding was a significant thickening of terminal ileum mesentery the length of 2,5 cm, with thickness reaching up to 1,5 cm and affecting almost half the circumference of the small intestine. According to the current literature, the case discussed in this article is the youngest recorded.

Abstract
Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are a group of inherited neurodegenerative disorders with clinical presentation predominantly in the childhood. The NCLs represent lysosomal storage disorders characterized by the accumulation of autofluorescent lipopigment storage material. The most common clinical features include development failure, psychomotor regression, seizures, and progressive loss of vision. We present a case of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis with cardiac involvement diagnosed post-mortem in a 9,5-year-old boy, whose clinical symptomatology comprised partial epilepsy, psychomotor decline and sinus bradycardia. In contrast to ventricular hypertrophy, being more frequently associated with NCLs, we discovered cardiac atrophy. Histologic examination of the heart revealed not only the lipofuscinosis affecting cardiac conducting cells and cardiomyocytes, but also basophilic degeneration of myocardium.

Abstract
Abstract
This study investigated for 14 days post-weaning, the influence of dietary supplementation of synbiotics in the form of probiotic cheeses containing cultures of L. plantarum and L. fermentum and crushed flaxseed (source of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids — PUFAs and fibre) on 36 commercial piglets originating from an infected herd (Coronavirus and E. coli) during the critical period of weaning. We focused on the health and metabolism of PUFAs in this critical period of a piglet’s life. The dietary supplementation positively affected: the overall health state of weaners, reduced diarrhoea by 29 % by 14 days post-weaning and significantly increased the counts of lactic acid bacteria, bifidobacteria and the production of volatile fatty acids. The PUFA concentrations in the m. biceps femoris of the piglets were analysed by gas chromatography. High levels of ω-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in flaxseed increased significantly the level of ALA, eicosapentaenic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenic acid (DHA) in the pig muscles on days 7 and 14 post-weaning. The levels of ω-6 linolenic acid (LA) were less affected by the diet, but were increased on day 14 post-weaning, while the conversion products of LA, and arachidonic acid (AA), were decreased on days 7 and 14. The increased level of dietary ALA favoured the activity of Δ-6-desaturase for the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA, at the expense of AA synthesis from LA. The ability of synbiotics to incorporate high levels of DHA in the pig muscles appear prospective for improving the nutritional properties of pork and reducing the occurrence of civilization diseases in consumers of this product of animal origin.

Abstract
Abstract
Vehicle transportation represents acute stress to animals with release of catecholamines and glucocorticoids from the adrenal gland resulting in impaired metabolic state. Such changes in metabolism may be reduced by the application of suitable feed supplement. The aim of this study was to test the effects of lupin supplementation applied after 1-hour transportation. Ewes in the control group (n = 7) were fed on trefoil-grass silage and hay, while the diet of the experimental group (n = 7) was supplemented with lupin groats (Lupinus angustifolius, var. SONET; 500 g per head per day) for 8 days. In both groups, blood was collected on the day of transportation and on Days 6 and 11 thereafter. Total blood parameters were assayed using spectrophotometry and fractions of protein, cholesterol, and lactate dehydrogenase using agarose electrophoresis. Lupin increased the albumin: globulin (ALB : GLB) ratio and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentration and reduced serum cholesterol and lactate, however it had no effect on body weight, body condition score (BCS), plasma glucose, serum protein, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) or alkaline phosphatise (ALP). Lupin may therefore be used as suitable feed supplement for sheep at times of high nutrient requirement.
