Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the diet of the free-living crab-eating fox by identifying the stomach contents of the 17 crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) roadkilled in two conservation units, both located in the Amazon rainforest. The food items were quantified by frequency of occurrence (FO) and percentage of occurrence (PO). The stomach contents were analysed for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fibre (CF), ether extract (EE), and mineral matter (MM). Nitrogen-free extractives (NFE), metabolisable energy (ME) values, as well as the energy need for maintenance were estimated. The composition of the diet for the crab-eating fox presented 29 food items from the different taxonomic groups, with a greater diversity of items of animal origin (n=22), although the highest frequency of occurrence was gramineae (Poaceae) (41.18%). Among the items of animal origin, 21% were mammals, 18% reptiles, 10% amphibians, 9% invertebrates and 3% birds. A high content of CF (62.76%) were determined. Nitrogen-free extractive and dry matter averages were 5.91% and 141.82 kcal/100g, respectively. The average maintenance energy was 447.01 kcal/day. These findings suggesting that the crab-eating foxes have a generalist diet with an omnivorous diet in the Amazon basin, feeding on gramineae, fruits, insects, snakes, amphibians, birds and small mammals and have the same feeding habit that present in other Brazilian biomes.

Abstract

Abstract
We evaluated and compared carcass traits and meat quality in Nellore cattle and F1 crosses between Nellore and Araguaia, where 17 individuals were from the Nellore group and 19 were ½ Nellore and ½ Araguaia crosses. All animals belonged to the same birth season and were raised in pasture systems under the same nutritional, environmental, and management conditions. When the animals reached slaughter weight, they were taken to an industrial slaughterhouse where food was not provided for 24 h (free access to water); they were then stunned, bled, the leather was removed, and they were eviscerated. The carcasses were weighed (hot weight), kept in chilled storage for approximately 24 h at 4°C, and weighed again to obtain the chilled carcass weight. Carcass yield, carcass length, carcass width, leg length, thigh perimeter, loin eye area (LEA), retail cuts, cooling loss, pH, fat depth, marbling rate, intramuscular fat, color, and shear force were analyzed and sensory analysis of the meat was conducted. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed for the following variables: slaughter weight, hot and chilled carcass weights, carcass and leg lengths, thigh perimeter, LEA, retail cuts, and lightness (L*), where the ½ Nellore ½ Araguaia individuals showed higher means for all of these traits, except leg length and L*. Therefore, crossbreeding between Nellore and Araguaia did not affect the meat's sensory characteristics, but contributed to an improvement in carcass traits, providing an alternative for farmers that aim for good meat quality, with a higher meat percentage.

Abstract
Pregnancy loss can be caused by several factors involved in human reproduction. Although up to 50% of cases remain unexplained, it has been postulated that the major cause of failed pregnancy is an error of embryo implantation. Transmembrane mucin-1 (MUC-1) is a glycoprotein expressed on the endometrial cell surface which acts as a barrier to implantation. The gene that codes for this molecule is composed of a polymorphic tandem repeat of 60 nucleotides. Our objective was to determine if MUC-1 genetic polymorphism is associated with implantation failure in patients with a history of recurrent abortion. The study was conducted on 10 women aged 25 to 35 years with no history of successful pregnancy and with a diagnosis of infertility. The control group consisted of 32 patients aged 25 to 35 years who had delivered at least two full-term live children and who had no history of abortions or fetal losses. MUC-1 amplicons were obtained by PCR and observed on agarose and polyacrylamide gel after electrophoresis. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference in the number of MUC-1 variable number of tandem repeats between these groups (P > 0.05). Our results suggest that there is no effect of the polymorphic MUC-1 sequence on the implantation failure. However, the data do not exclude MUC-1 relevance during embryo implantation. The process is related to several associated factors such as the mechanisms of gene expression in the uterus, specific MUC-1 post-translational modifications and appropriate interactions with other molecules during embryo implantation.

Abstract
The transmembrane mucin glycoprotein (MUC1) has an anti-adhesive role, and functions to maintain a non-receptive uterine state. A polymorphic variation of the MUC1 gene has been associated with female infertility due to suspected failure of embryo implantation, based on the significant greater size of the lower allele observed in infertile women. The aim of this study was to confirm this preliminary observation using long polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which has amplified the 60-bp polymorphic variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) associated to the binding domain of the MUC1 glycoprotein. DNA samples were obtained from 20 women, 10 fertile and 10 infertile, and the VNTR region was amplified through a long PCR procedure. The VNTR size range from 1.6 to 2.9 kb (22-44 motifs). The average size for the lower allele was 1.69 kb for both groups, and for the upper allele was 2.35 and 2.49 kb (P > 0.05) for fertile and infertile groups respectively. The VNTR polymorphism of the MUC1 gene was not associated with female infertility, although its significance cannot be discarded. It is suggested that other regulatory molecules and signals may interact with the MUC1 gene variations, favouring endometrial receptivity and embryo attachment.

Abstract
The true incidence of dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) is unknown. Variable estimations have been advanced according to the type of recruitment of patients. In series of patients with tumors who were operated on for pharmacoresistant epilepsy, the rates varied widely, from 5% to 87%. Among 600 pediatric tumors in a series, 9 DNT (1.5%) were found. Since DNT was identified only in 1988, we reviewed our cases (1975-1991) of gangliogliomas (n = 25), oligoastrocytomas (n = 9), temporal oligodendrogliomas (n = 11), temporal astrocytomas grade II (OMS 1993) (n = 44) irrespective to age, as well as all astrocytomas grade II (n = 61) and oligodendrogliomas (n = 10) in patients up to 20 years of age. Seven DNT were encountered. Four cases had been formerly diagnosed as gangliogliomas and 3 as astrocytomas grade II. From 1992 on, 4 more DNT were diagnosed, making up a total of 11 cases. Eight patients were under age 17 (6 y to 17 y, mean 10.3 y) and 3 were 27, 42 and 51 year-old. Eight tumors were temporal, 1 frontal and 2 occipital. All patients have had pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Among all neuroepithelial tumors diagnosed in our Division in the last 22 years, DNT comprises 1.2% in patients under age 20 (n = 660), 0.24% in patients over 20 years (n = 1254), and 0.63% all ages considered (n = 1914).

Abstract
Calcification in lymphoma before treatment or after chemotherapy is extremely rare. There have been scarse reports of calcified masses due to Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas, originating in the main lymphatic chains of the mediastinum and retroperitoneum. We report a case of primarily extra-nodal (pulmonary) non-Hodgkin lymphoma with calcification prior to current treatment.

Abstract
We describe in this work a clinical case of a female patient aged 21 years, bearer of Wilson's disease, a first clinical manifestation of the disease occurred as an acute hemolytic crisis followed by fulminant hepatic failure evolving to death after 26 days' internment. The definitive diagnosis was obtained only as a quantitative measurement of hepatic copper from the necropsy material. The search for Kayser-Fleischer ring was negative and the serum ceruloplasmin level was 9 mg/dl (15 to 60). No involvement of the central nervous system was noted from the pathologic analysis. The patient presented two Coombs negative hemolytic crises during the internment; the first on being admitted to hospital and the second after a transjugular hepatic biopsy carried out on the 16th day after internment. The last hemolytic crisis was accompanied by an increase of serum and urinary copper levels. On this occasion the patient evolved to a progressive hepatic failure with severe jaundice and hepatic encephalopathy. We are presenting the clinical-biochemical evolution of the patient and we shall discuss the existent hypotheses to the pathophysiology of this rare form for manifestation of the Wilson's disease as well the diagnostic difficulties.
