Hydrogels-A Promising Materials for 3D Printing Technology

Hydrogels are a promising material for a variety of applications after appropriate functional and structural design, which alters the physicochemical properties and cell signaling pathways of the hydrogels. Over the past few decades, considerable scientific research has made breakthroughs in a variety of applications such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, agriculture, biosensors, bioseparation, defense, and cosmetics. In the present review, different classifications of hydrogels and their limitations have been discussed. In addition, techniques involved in improving the physical, mechanical, and biological properties of hydrogels by admixing various organic and inorganic materials are explored. Future 3D printing technology will substantially advance the ability to pattern molecules, cells, and organs. With significant potential for producing living tissue structures or organs, hydrogels can successfully print mammalian cells and retain their functionalities. Furthermore, recent advances in functional hydrogels such as photo- and pH-responsive hydrogels and drug-delivery hydrogels are discussed in detail for biomedical applications.

Surface functionalized bioceramics coated on metallic implants for biomedical and anticorrosion performance - a review

In modern days, the usage of trauma fixation devices has significantly increased due to sports injury, age-related issues, accidents, and revision surgery purposes. Numerous materials such as stainless steel, titanium, Co-Cr alloy, polymers, and ceramics have been used to replace the missing or defective parts of the human body. After implantation, body fluids (Na⁺, K⁺, and Cl^-), protein, and blood cells interact with the surface of metallic implants, which favours the release of ions from the metallic surface to surrounding body tissues, leading to a hypersensitive reaction. Body pH, temperature, and interaction of immune cells also cause metal ion leaching and lose host cell interaction and effective mineralization for better durability. Moreover, microbial invasion is another important crisis, which produces extracellular compounds onto the biomaterial surface through which it escapes from the antimicrobial agents. To enhance the performance of materials by improving mechanical, corrosion resistance, antimicrobial, and biocompatibility properties, surface modification is a prerequisite method in which chemical vapour deposition (CVD), physical vapour deposition (PVD), sol-gel method, and electrochemical deposition are generally involved. The properties of bioceramics such as chemical inertness, bioactivity, biocompatibility, and corrosion protection make them most suitable for the surface functionalization of metallic implants. To the best of our knowledge, very limited literature is available to discuss the interaction of body proteins, pH, and temperature onto bioceramic coatings. Hence, the present review focuses on the corrosion behaviour of different ceramic composite coating materials with different conditions. This review initially briefs the properties and surface chemistry of metal implants and the need for surface modifications by different deposition techniques. Further, mechanical, cytotoxicity, antimicrobial property, and electrochemical behaviour of ceramics and metal nitride coatings are discussed. Finally, future perspectives of coatings are outlined for biomedical applications.

Pulsed laser deposition of nanostructured bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite coatings: Microstructural and electrochemical characterization

Bioactive coatings on metallic implants promote osseointegration between bone and implant interfaces. A suitable coating enhances the life span of the implant and reduces the requirement of revision surgery. The coating process needs to be optimized such that it does not alter the bioactivity of the material. To understand this, the biocompatibility of nanostructured bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite-coated Titanium substrate by pulsed laser deposition method is evaluated. Raman and IR spectroscopic techniques based on silica and phosphate functional groups mapping have confirmed homogeneity in coatings by pulse laser deposition method. Comparative studies on nanostructured bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite on titanium surface elaborated the significance of bioactivity, hemocompatibility, and cytocompatibility of the coated surface. Notably, both hydroxyapatite and bioactive glass show good hemocompatibility in powder form. Hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility results validate the enhanced sustenance for hydroxyapatite coating. These results signify the importance of the choice of coating methodology of bioceramics towards implant applications.

Rhizopus stolonifer mediated biosynthesis of biocompatible cadmium chalcogenide quantum dots

We report an efficient method to biosynthesize biocompatible cadmium telluride and cadmium sulphide quantum dots from the fungus Rhizopus stolonifer. The suspension of the quantum dots exhibited purple and greenish-blue luminescence respectively upon UV light illumination. Photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy confirms the formation of the quantum dots. From the photoluminescence spectrum the emission maxima is found to be 424 and 476nm respectively. The X-ray diffraction of the quantum dots matches with results reported in literature. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay for cell viability evaluation carried out on 3-days transfer, inoculum 3×10⁵ cells, embryonic fibroblast cells lines shows that more than 80% of the cells are viable even after 48h, indicating the biocompatible nature of the quantum dots. A good contrast in imaging has been obtained upon incorporating the quantum dots in human breast adenocarcinoma Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 cell lines.

Antibacterial effects of silver-zirconia composite coatings using pulsed laser deposition onto 316L SS for bio implants

Bacterial invasion on biomedical implants is a challenging task for long-term and permanent implant fixations. Prevention of initial bacterial adherence on metallic implants is an important concern to avoid extracellular matrix (biofilm) secretion from bacteria that is resistant to antibacterial agents. In order to overcome this defect, recently, surface coatings such as zirconia (ZrO2) with higher smoothness have been shown to improve implants durability. In the present study, pulsed laser deposition (PLD) was used to deposit ZrO2 and silver (Ag)-ZrO2 composite coatings onto 316L stainless steel (316L SS). Phase purity, surface roughness and surface morphology, thickness of the coatings and elemental compositions of the coatings were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Total viable count (TVC) and epifluorescence microscopy analysis were studied to evaluate antimicrobial efficiency of ZrO2 and Ag-ZrO2 composite coatings using gram negative (gram -ve) Escherichia coli (E.coli) and gram positive (gram +ve) Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus). On the basis of the present study, it could be speculated that ZrO2 coatings exhibited antibacterial activity against only E.coli, whereas Ag-ZrO2 composite coatings showed superior activity against E.coli and S.aureus strains.
