Abstract
BACKGROUND Dexmedetomidine plays a pivotal role in mitigating postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction while enhancing the overall quality of life among surgical patients. Nevertheless, the influence of dexmedetomidine on such complications in various anaesthesia techniques remains inadequately explored. As such, in the present study, a meta-analysis was conducted to comprehensively evaluate its effects on postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction. METHODS A number of databases were searched for randomised controlled trials comparing intravenous dexmedetomidine to other interventions in preventing postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction in non-cardiac and non-neurosurgical patients. These databases included PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Statistical analysis and graphing were performed using Review Manager, STATA, the second version of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomised controlled trials, and GRADE profiler. MAIN RESULTS This meta-analysis comprised a total of 24 randomised controlled trials, including 20 trials assessing postoperative delirium and 6 trials assessing postoperative cognitive dysfunction. Across these 24 studies, a statistically significant positive association was observed between intravenous administration of dexmedetomidine and a reduced incidence of postoperative delirium (RR: 0.55; 95% CI 0.47 to 0.64, p < 0.00001, I2 = 2%) and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (RR: 0.60; 95% CI 0.38 to 0.96, p = 0.03, I2 = 60%). Subgroup analysis did not reveal a significant difference in the incidence of postoperative delirium between the general anaesthesia and non-general anaesthesia groups, but a significant difference was observed in the incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction. Nonetheless, when the data were pooled, it was evident that the utilisation of dexmedetomidine was associated with an increased incidence of hypotension (RR: 1.42; 95% CI 1.08 to 1.86, p = 0.01, I2 = 0%) and bradycardia (RR: 1.66; 95% CI 1.23 to 2.26, p = 0.001, I2 = 0%) compared with other interventions. However, there was no significantly higher occurrence of hypertension in the DEX groups (RR = 1.35, 95% CI 0.81-2.24, p = 0.25, I2 = 0%). CONCLUSION Compared with other interventions, intravenous dexmedetomidine infusion during non-cardiac and non-neurosurgical procedures may significantly reduce the risk of postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction. The results of subgroup analysis reveal a consistent preventive effect on postoperative delirium in both general and non-general anaesthesia groups. Meanwhile, continuous infusion during general anaesthesia was more effective in reducing the risk of cognitive dysfunction. Despite such findings, hypotension and bradycardia were more frequent in patients who received dexmedetomidine during surgery.

Abstract
Several studies have explored gastrointestinal surgery and the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD), but the results of these studies are still controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate undergoing gastrointestinal surgery and the risk of PD in patients. PubMed, EMbase, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, and WanFang Data databases were electronically searched to collect studies from inception to 1 March 2023. Stata15.1 software was used to perform meta-analysis of the data. Of 260 references screened, 8 studies involving 9,596,121 people were included eventually. Gastrointestinal surgery had no significant effect on the risk of PD (OR = 1.059, 95% CI: 0.915-1.224, I2 = 90.4%, p = 0.443). Several subgroup analyses showed that the patients with different regions, different surgical locations and different sample sizes after gastrointestinal surgery were not associated with the risk of PD. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis confirmed that the patients after gastrointestinal surgery were not associated with the risk of PD. There was no significant effect of gastrointestinal surgery on the risk of PD, but more studies should be included to confirm this observation. Abstract
CONTEXT (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is involved in cell proliferation and ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of several organs. OBJECTIVE To identify the role of EGCG in intestinal epithelial proliferation and barrier exposed to I/R injury. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into sham, I/R, I/R + EGCG (12.5 mg/kg), I/R + EGCG (25 mg/kg) and I/R + EGCG (50 mg/kg). I/R group rats were subjected to intestinal ischemia for 1 h and 6 h reperfusion. The rats were supplemented with EGCG 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg daily for 3 days via intraperitoneal injection before surgery. We used IEC-6 to expose to hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) injury to mimic I/R in vivo. IEC-6 cells were divided into control, H/R and H/R + EGCG (40 μmol/L). The effects of EGCG and its mechanism was explored. RESULTS Pharmacological treatment with EGCG notably improves intestinal epithelial proliferation (12.5 mg/kg, 1.74-fold; 25 mg/kg, 2.93-fold, and 50 mg/kg, 4.33-fold) and barrier function after I/R injury. EGCG promoted cell proliferation (2.99-fold) and increased the expression of occludin (2.36-fold) and ZO-1 (1.64-fold) in IEC-6 cells after H/R injury. EGCG promoted proliferation of IEC-6 cells with ED50 values of 18.16 μmol/L. Further investigations indicated that EGCG activated Nurr1 expression in intestine after I/R injury. EGCG promote cell proliferation and increased the expression of occludin and ZO-1 in IEC-6 cells after H/R injury were abrogated in the knockdown of Nurr1 by siRNA. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that EGCG promotes intestinal epithelial cell proliferation and barrier function after I/R injury in vitro and in vivo via activation of Nurr1.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Gut barrier dysfunction caused by intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is associated with substantial death and morbidity. In this research, the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating intestinal I/R injury was investigated. We used miRNA sequencing to analyze clinical ischemic and normal intestinal samples. Through bioinformatics analysis based on sequencing results, we found that upregulated miRNAs inhibited epithelial barrier function and cell proliferation, with miR-379-5p being the most significantly upregulated in the ischemic intestine. Further studies confirmed the role of miR-379-5p through experiments in the human ischemic intestine, the mouse I/R injury model in vivo , and cell hypoxia/reoxygenation models in vitro . Inhibiting miR-379-5p increased epithelial cell proliferation and improved barrier function after I/R injury. We also identified eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4 gamma 2 (EIF4G2) as a downstream target gene of miR-379-5p through bioinformatics prediction and experimental verification. The findings suggest that inhibiting miR-379-5p could improve intestinal epithelial cell proliferation and barrier function by targeting EIF4G2. The goal of this study was to find a potential target for treating I/R injury in the intestine, as well as to prevent and mitigate the damage caused.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As an atypical antipsychotic drug, olanzapine is one of the most commonly used drugs for delirium control. There are no systematic evaluations or meta-analyses of the efficacy and safety of olanzapine for delirium control in critically ill adults. OBJECTIVES In this meta-analysis, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of olanzapine for delirium control in critically ill adults in the intensive care unit (ICU). DATA SOURCES AND METHODS From inception to October 2022, 12 electronic databases were searched. We retrieved randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and retrospective cohort studies of critically ill adults with delirium that compared the effects of olanzapine and other interventions, including routine care (no intervention), nonpharmaceutical interventions and pharmaceutical interventions. The main outcome measures were the (a) relief of delirium symptoms and (b) a decrease in delirium duration. Secondary outcomes were ICU and in-hospital mortality, ICU and hospital length of stay, incidence of adverse events, cognitive function, sleep quality, quality of life, mechanical ventilation time, endotracheal intubation rate and delirium recurrence rate. We applied a random effects model. RESULTS Data from 10 studies (four RCTs and six retrospective cohort studies) involving 7076 patients (2459 in the olanzapine group and 4617 in the control group) were included. Olanzapine did not effectively relieve delirium symptoms (OR = 1.36, 95% CI [0.83, 2.28], p = 0.21), nor did it shorten the duration of delirium [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.02, 95% CI [-1.04, 1.09], p = 0.97] when compared with other interventions. Pooled data from three studies showed that the use of olanzapine reduced the incidence of hypotension (OR = 0.44, 95% CI [0.20, 0.95], p = 0.04) compared with other pharmaceuticals. There was no significant difference in other secondary outcomes, including ICU or hospital length of stay, in-hospital mortality, extrapyramidal reactions, QTc interval prolongation, or overall incidence of other adverse reactions. The number of included studies was not sufficient for performing a comparison between olanzapine and no intervention. CONCLUSION Compared with other interventions, olanzapine has no advantage in alleviating delirium symptoms and shortening delirium duration in critically ill adults. However, there is some evidence that the rate of hypotension was lower in patients who received olanzapine than in those who received other pharmaceutical interventions. There was a nonsignificant difference in the length of ICU or hospital stay, in-hospital mortality, and other adverse reactions. This study provides reference data for delirium research and clinical drug intervention strategies in critically ill adults. Abstract
The association between the expression of Lysyl oxidase (LOX) and its clinicopathological parameters and prognosis in patients with gastric cancer (GC) is still disputed. We performed this meta-analysis and bioinformatics analysis to clarify the relationship between the expression and methylation level of LOX with its clinicopathological parameters and prognostic value. We applied odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval to study the associations between LOX expression and clinicopathological parameters and overall survival (OS) in GC patients. In addition, association analysis of promoter methylation levels and expression of LOX with its prognostic value was performed using the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and four Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets. The PRISMA 2020 checklist was used to guide the data extraction and analysis. This meta-analysis includes seven clinical studies with a total of 1435 GC patients. LOX expression was related to lymph node metastasis and tumor distant metastasis in GC patients, but not to gender, tumor differentiation, Lauren classification, or tumor depth of invasion. Patients with GC grouped in high-expression of LOX had a much worse OS than those in low-expression. In addition, TCGA and four GEO datasets with 1279 samples were included in the bioinformatics analysis. The bioinformatics analysis showed that patients with high LOX levels had poor OS; low levels of methylation at some cg sites in the LOX gene were strongly related to poor OS and PFS; and methylation levels of LOX are negatively correlated with advanced tumor stage. The conclusion from comprehensive DNA methylation and gene expression analysis supports LOX as a specific diagnostic and prognosis biomarker in GC. LOX expression was related to lymph node metastasis, tumor distant metastasis and poor prognosis in GC. Low methylation levels were related to advanced tumor stage and poor prognosis in GC. Integrative analysis supports LOX as a specific diagnostic and prognosis biomarker in GC.

Abstract
Organic gain materials (OGMs) currently used in organic lasers and optical amplifiers are focused on singlet-fluorescence materials, while triplet-phosphorescence-based OGMs have hardly been developed yet. Herein, we report a novel pure organic phosphorescence gain molecule (SBP) for optical amplification by stimulated emission from triplet states. The introduction of the benzophenone carbonyl group and sulfur atoms increases the spin orbit coupling constant of SBP, which accelerates the intersystem crossing (ISC) and phosphorescence processes. Experimental and theoretical results verify that the formation of the H-type dimer aggregate decreases the fluorescence radiation rate while accelerating the ISC rate, also enhancing the phosphorescence emission of SBP. Doping SBP molecules into a PMMA matrix can stabilize triplet excitons, yielding the maximum phosphorescence quantum yield of 18.9%. We realized triplet phosphorescent amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) at 557 nm from 30.0 wt % SBP@PMMA samples. Our results provide a novel strategy to develop triplet phosphor OGMs.

Abstract
Background It has been reported that there is a correlation between the level of ubiquitin-specific protease 22 (USP22) and the clinicopathological parameters and prognosis of gastric cancer (GC) patients, but the conclusions are inconsistent. Hence, a meta-analysis must be conducted to clarify the relationship between USP22 expression and clinicopathological and prognostic value of GC patients to provide more accurate evidence. Methods According to the predetermined selection criteria, systematic file retrieval was performed. The hazard ratio (HR) or odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to evaluate the relationship between USP22 expression and clinicopathological and prognostic value of GC patients. Results In a total of 802 patients, those with GC were finally included in 6 studies. The pooled results demonstrated that the expression of USP22 was significantly increased in GC tissues compared with control tissues (OR = 9.947, 95% CI, 6.074–16.291, P = 0.000), and USP22 expression was related to lymph node metastasis (OR = 2.415, 95% CI, 1.082, P = 0.031), distant metastasis (OR = 3.956, 95% CI, 1.365–11.464, P = 0.011) and TNM stage (OR = 2.973, 95% CI, 1.153–7.666, P = 0.024). Nevertheless, the expression of USP22 was not correlated with gender (OR = 1.202, 95% CI, 0.877–1.648, P = 0.253), age (OR = 1.090, 95% CI, 0.811–1.466, P = 0.568), tumor size (OR = 0.693,95% CI, 0.348–1.380, P = 0.297), tumor differentiation (OR = 1.830, 95%CI, 0.948–3.531, P = 0.072) and depth of invasion (OR = 2.320, 95% CI, 0.684–7.871, P = 0.177). Moreover, a high expression of USP22 predicted a poor overall survival (OS) in GC patients (HR = 2.012, 95% CI, 1.522–2.658, P = 0.000). The database of Kaplan–Meier plotter confirmed that a high expression of USP22 was correlated with poor prognostics in GC patients (HR = 1.41, 95% CI, 1.18–1.68, P < 0.01). Conclusion USP22 overexpression in GC tissues is positively related to lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis and TNM stage and indicates a poor clinical outcome of GC patients, but it is not associated with age, gender, depth of invasion, tumor differentiation and tumor size of GC patients. Abstract
Background The relationship between PROX1 expression and clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis in patients with gastric cancer (GC) remain controversial. The aim of this study is to determine the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of PROX1 expression in patients with GC. Methods A systematic literature search and meta-analysis were performed. Odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (CI) were used to evaluated the relationship between PROX1 expression and clinicopathological characteristics and overall survival (OS) of GC patients. Additionally, the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) datasets were utilized to examine the relationship between PROX1 expression and clinicopathological significance and OS in GC patients. Results A total of 8 studies pooling 1289 GC patients were included in the assessment. In GC patients, PROX1 expression was not related to gender (OR: 1.234, 95% CI 0.958–1.590, P = 0.104), depth of tumor invasion (OR: 0.742, 95% CI 0.428–1.287, P = 0.289), lymph node metastasis (OR: 2.161, 95% CI 0.808–5.779, P = 0.125), TNM stage (OR: 1.324, 95% CI 0.572–3.066, P = 0.513), tumor size (OR: 0.889, 95% CI 0.502–1.576, P = 0.687), distant metastasis (OR: 1.096, 95% CI 0.470–2.555, P = 0.763). In addition, we also found that PROX1 expression was not associated with 1-year OS (OR: 0.908, 95% CI 0.631–1.306, P = 0.602), 3-year OS (OR: 1.234, 95% CI 0.482–3.160, P = 0.661) and 5-year OS (OR: 0.853, 95% CI 0.266–2.736, P = 0.790). According to TCGA, in comparison with high and low PROX1 expression in GC patients, the OS did not differ statistically (p = 0.119). Conclusion The expression of PROX1 was shown to lack a significant relationship to gender, TNM stage, depth of invasion, tumor size, stage, distant metastasis, or lymph node metastasis in statistically. The expression of PROX1 was not related to OS and it failed to be a meaningful biomarker to prevent and diagnose GC. Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinicopathological and prognostic significance of SRY-box transcription factor 9 (SOX9) expression in gastric cancer (GC) patients is still controversial. Our aim is to investigate the clinicopathological and prognostic value of SOX9 expression in GC patients. METHODS A systemic literature search and meta-analysis were used to evaluate the clinicopathological significance and overall survival (OS) of SOX9 expression in GC patients. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset was used to investigate the relationship between SOX9 expression and OS of stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD) patients. RESULTS A total of 11 articles involving 3,060 GC patients were included. In GC patients, the SOX9 expression was not associated with age [odds ratio (OR) = 0.743, 95% CI = 0.507-1.089, p = 0.128], sex (OR = 0.794, 95% CI = 0.605-1.042, p = 0.097), differentiation (OR = 0.728, 95% CI = 0.475-1.115, p = 0.144), and lymph node metastasis (OR = 1.031, 95% CI = 0.793-1.340, p = 0.820). SOX9 expression was associated with depth of invasion (OR = 0.348, 95% CI = 0.247-0.489, p = 0.000) and TNM stage (OR = 0.428, 95% CI = 0.308-0.595, p = 0.000). The 1-year OS (OR = 1.507, 95% CI = 1.167-1.945, p = 0.002), 3-year OS (OR = 1.482, 95% CI = 1.189-1.847, p = 0.000), and 5-year OS (OR = 1.487, 95% CI = 1.187-1.862, p = 0.001) were significantly shorter in GC patients with high SOX9 expression. TCGA analysis showed that SOX9 was upregulated in STAD patients compared with that in normal patients (p < 0.001), and the OS of STAD patients with a high expression of SOX9 is poorer than that in patients with low expression of SOX9, but the statistical difference is not obvious (p = 0.31). CONCLUSION SOX9 expression was associated with the depth of tumor invasion, TNM stage, and poor OS of GC patients. SOX9 may be a potential prognostic factor for GC patients but needs further study. Abstract
This study explored the relationship between the pretreatment systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and overall survival (OS) in gastric cancer (GC) patients. A systemic literature search was performed to find out the articles that estimated the relationship of SII with specific clinical parameters and OS in GC patients. Nine articles (including 10 studies) were included. A total of 3,850 cases were eventually included. In GC patients, there was no association between pretreatment SII and gender (OR=0.991, p=0.944) or differentiation (OR=1.093, p=0.687). However, pretreatment SII was related to depth of tumor invasion (OR=0.340, p <0.001), lymph node metastasis (OR=0.447, p <0.001) and TNM stage (OR=0.361, p <0.001) in GC patients. The ORs of 1-year, 3-year and 5-year OS were 0.467 (I2=0.0%; p=0.682), 0.355 (I2=85.6%; p <0.001) and 0.507 (I2=56.4%; p=0.057). The pretreatment SII could be used as an indicator of the depth of tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis, TNM stage and overall of gastric cancer patients. Abstract
TNFα-stimulated gene-6 (TNFAIP6) plays an important role in the prognosis of many tumors. Our objective was to investigate the clinical and prognostic value of TNFAIP6 expression in gastric cancer (GC) patients. Here, we investigated the expression of TNFAIP6 in GC tissues using western blotting and immunohistochemistry and the association between TNFAIP6 expression and the prognosis and clinicopathological parameters of GC patients. Our results revealed that the expression of TNFAIP6 was higher in GC tissue than in normal gastric tissue, and the levels were positively correlated with the depth of tumor invasion (P = 0.010), tumors with lymph node metastasis (P = 0.000) and TNM stage (P = 0.003) of GC patients. Moreover, the results revealed that patients with high TNFAIP6 expression exhibited poorer overall survival than those with low TNFAIP6 expression (P = 0.037). Additionally, knockdown of TNFAIP6 inhibited the proliferation, invasion and metastasis of GC cells in vitro. High TNFAIP6 expression was associated with the depth of tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis, TNM stage and poor prognosis of GC patients, suggesting that TNFAIP6 may serve as a novel indicator of the prognosis and as a treatment target of GC.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the overall survival (OS) between proximal gastric cancer (PG) and distal gastric cancer (DG) patients after gastrectomy. Methods Articles on the prognostic study of PG and DG patients after gastrectomy were collected from the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and VIP databases from the date of establishment until December 2020. The data were statistically analyzed by Stata software (version 11.0, StataCorp). Results A total of 10 articles met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed that the 1-, 3- and 5-year OS rates of PG patients were significantly lower than those of DG patients (RR = 0.898, 95% CI: 0.825 to 0.977, P = 0.013; RR = 0.802, 95% CI: 0.708 to 0.909, P = 0.001; RR = 0.736, 95% CI: 0.642 to 0.844, P = 0.000). After subgroup analysis according to different countries, the combined RR values of were as follows: 1-year OS: eastern countries: RR = 0.966, 95% CI: 0.944 to 0.988, P = 0.003, western countries: RR = 0.687, 95% CI: 0.622 to 0.759, P = 0.000; 3-year OS: eastern countries: RR = 0.846, 95% CI: 0.771 to 0.929, P = 0.000, western countries: RR = 0.742, 95% CI: 0.399 to 1.382, P = 0.348; and 5-year OS: eastern countries: RR = 0.798, 95% CI: 0.716 to 0.889, P = 0.000, western countries: RR = 0.646, 95% CI: 0.414 to 1.008, P = 0.054. Conclusion In terms of 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS, PG patients had lower rates than DG patients and the eastern countries/western countries subgroup, but there were no significant differences in 3- and 5-year OS for the western countries. Abstract
FoxM1 is involved in the regeneration of several organs after injury and expressed in the intestinal mucosa. The intrinsic mechanism of FoxM1 activity in the mucosa after intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury has not been reported. Therefore, we investigated the role of FoxM1 in mediating intestinal mucosa regeneration after I/R injury. Expression of FoxM1 and the proliferation of intestinal mucosa epithelial cells were examined in rats with intestinal I/R injury and an IEC-6 cell hypoxia/reperfusion (H/R) model. The effects of FoxM1 inhibition or activation on intestinal epithelial cell proliferation were measured. FoxM1 expression was consistent with the proliferation of intestinal epithelial cells in the intestinal mucosa after I/R injury. Inhibition of FoxM1 expression led to the downregulation of Ki-67 expression mediated by the inhibited expression of Nurr1, and FoxM1 overexpression promoted IEC-6 cell proliferation after H/R injury through activating Nurr1 expression. Furthermore, FoxM1 directly promoted the transcription of Nurr1 by directly binding the promoter of Nurr1. Further investigation showed low expression levels of FoxM1, Nurr1, and Ki-67 in the intestinal epithelium of patients with intestinal ischemic injury. FoxM1 acts as a critical regulator of intestinal regeneration after I/R injury by directly promoting the transcription of Nurr1. The FoxM1/Nurr1 signaling pathway represents a promising therapeutic target for intestinal I/R injury and related clinical diseases. A signaling pathway that promotes the regeneration of intestinal cells in rats represents a promising therapeutic target for treating intestinal injury in humans. A team led by Guo Zu and Jing Guo from Dalian Medical University in China investigated the role of a regulatory protein called FoxM1 in repairing intestinal damage after a period of inadequate blood flow to the tissues of the gastrointestinal tract. They showed in rat models that FoxM1 promoted the proliferation of intestinal cells after injury by activating other proteins in a particular signaling pathway. Looking at tissue samples from five people who experienced intestinal injury as a result of restricted blood flow, the researchers detected low expression levels of FoxM1 and its downstream signaling intermediaries. Boosting the activity of those proteins could help promote healing and regeneration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intestinal ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury is a serious but common pathophysiological process of many diseases, resulting in a high mortality rate in clinical practice. Ubiquitin-specific protease 22 (USP22) acts as regulator of cell cycle progression, proliferation, and tumor invasion. Depleted USP22 expression has been reported to contribute to arrested cell cycle and disrupted generation of differentiated cell types in crypts and villi. However, the role of USP22 in intestinal damage recovery has not been investigated. Therefore, elucidation of the underlying mechanism of USP22 in intestinal I/R injury may help to improve the tissue repair and patient prognosis in clinical practice.
AIM To investigate the role of USP22 in intestinal cell proliferation and regeneration after intestinal I/R injury.
METHODS An animal model of intestinal I/R injury was generated in male Sprague-Dawley rats by occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery followed by reperfusion. Chiu’s scoring system was used to grade the damage to the intestinal mucosa. An in vitro model was developed by incubating rat intestinal epithelial IEC-6 cells in hypoxia/reoxygenation conditions in order to simulate I/R in vivo. siRNA and overexpression plasmid were used to regulate the expression of USP22. USP22, Cyclin D1, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression levels were measured by Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry staining. Cell survival (viability) and cell cycle were evaluated using the Cell Counting Kit-8 and flow cytometry, respectively.
RESULTS USP22 expression was positively correlated with the expression levels of PCNA and Cyclin D1 both in vivo and in vitro, which confirmed that USP22 was involved in cell proliferation and intestinal regeneration after intestinal I/R injury. Decreased levels of Cyclin D1 and cell cycle arrest were observed in the USP22 knockdown group (P < 0.05), while opposite results were observed in the USP22 overexpression group (P < 0.05). In addition, increased expression of USP22 was related to improved intestinal pathology or IEC-6 cell viability after I/R or hypoxia/reoxygenation. These results suggested that USP22 may exert a protective effect on intestinal I/R injury by regulating cell proliferation and facilitating tissue regeneration.
CONCLUSION USP22 is correlated with promoting intestinal cell proliferation and accelerating intestinal tissue regeneration after intestinal I/R injury and may serve as a potential target for therapeutic development for tissue repair during intestinal I/R injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) adversely affects the intestinal mucosa. The major mechanisms of I/R are the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptosis. Salvianolic acid A (SalA) is suggested to be an effective antioxidative and antiapoptotic agent in numerous pathological injuries. The present study investigated the protective role of SalA in I/R of the intestine. METHODS Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to intestinal I/R injury in vivo. In vitro experiments were performed in IEC-6 cells subjected to hypoxia/ reoxygenation (H/R) stimulation to simulate intestinal I/R. TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase and glutathione peroxidase levels were measured using biochemical analysis. Apoptosis was measured by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP nick-end labeling staining or flow cytometry in vivo and in vitro. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured by dichlorodihydrofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA) staining. Western blotting was performed to determine the expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), Nrf2 and proteins associated with apoptosis. The mRNA expressions of Nrf2 and HO-1 were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in vivo and in vitro. RESULTS Malondialdehyde level and myeloperoxidase and glutathione peroxidase, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 levels group in intestinal tissue decreased significantly in the SalA pretreatment groups compared to the I/R group. SalA markedly abolished intestinal injury compared to the I/R group. SalA significantly attenuated apoptosis and increased Nrf2/HO-1 expression in vivo and in vitro. However, Nrf2 siRNA treatment partially abrogated the above mentioned effects of SalA in H/R-induced ROS and apoptosis in IEC-6 cells. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrated that SalA ameliorated oxidation, inhibited the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and alleviated apoptosis in I/R-induced injury and that these protective effects may partially occur via regulation of the Nrf2/ HO-1 pathways.

Abstract
Autophagy is an essential cytoprotective response against pathologic stresses that selectively degrades damaged cellular components. Impaired autophagy contributes to organ injury in multiple diseases, including ischemia/reperfusion (I/R), but the exact mechanism by which impaired autophagy is regulated remains unclear. Several researchers have demonstrated that microRNAs (miRNAs) negatively regulate autophagy by targeting autophagy-related genes (ATGs). Therefore, the effect of ATG-related miRNAs on I/R remains a promising research avenue. In our study, we found that autophagy flux is impaired during intestinal I/R. A miRNA microarray analysis showed that miR-665-3p was highly expressed in the I/R group, which was confirmed by qRT-PCR. Then, we predicted and proved that miR-665-3p negatively regulates ATG4B expression in Caco-2 and IEC-6 cells. In ileum biopsy samples from patients with intestinal infarction, there was an inverse correlation between miR-665-3p and ATG4B expression, which supports the in vitro findings. Moreover, based on miR-665-3p regulation of autophagy in response to hypoxia/reoxygenation in vitro, gain-of-function and loss-of-function approaches were used to investigate the therapeutic potential of miR-665-3p. Additionally, we provide evidence that ATG4B is indispensable for protection upon inhibition of miR-665-3p. Finally, we observed that locked nucleic acid-modified inhibition of miR-665-3p in vivo alleviates I/R-induced systemic inflammation and apoptosis via recovery of autophagic flux. Our study highlights miR-665-3p as a novel small molecule that regulates autophagy by targeting ATG4B, suggesting that miR-665-3p inhibition may be a potential therapeutic approach against inflammation and apoptosis for the clinical treatment of intestinal I/R.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between expression of runt related transcription factor 3 (RUNX3) and clinicopathological parameters of the patients with gastric cancer (GC) is controversial. METHODS The studies were retrieved from those already published essay in PubMed, EMBASE, Wan Fang, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), the Cochrane Library and Google Scholar. All statistical tests in this meta-analysis were performed using Stata 10.0 software (Stata Corp, College Station, TX). A P value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS A total of nine studies involving 796 patients were included in final meta-analysis. The pooled data showed that expression of RUNX3 was significant correlated with tumor's differentiation (OR = 0.387; 95%CI: 0.237-0.633; P = 0.000), depth of invasion (OR = 0.443; 95%CI: 0.273-0.717; P = 0.001), lymph node metastasis (OR = 0.394; 95%CI: 0.259-0.598; P = 0.000), distant metastasis (OR = 0.403; 95%CI: 0.213-0.764; P = 0.005) and TNM stage (OR = 0.461; 95%CI, 0.322-0.659; P = 0.000) in GC. Expression of RUNX3 was significant correlated with good overall survival (OS) [1-year OS (OR = 2.735; 95%CI: 1.966-3.806; P = 0.000), 3-year OS (OR = 4.782; 95%CI: 3.634-6.292; P = 0.000), 5-year OS (OR = 5.191; 95%CI: 3.775-7.138; P = 0.000]. However, RUNX3 was not correlated with gender (OR = 1.409; 95%CI: 0.986-2.014; P = 0.060). CONCLUSION RUNX3 expression correlates with tumor's differentiation, depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, TNM stage and OS of GC patients.

Abstract
Impairment in gut barrier function induced by intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Intestinal barrier function requires the tight coordination of epithelial migration, proliferation and differentiation. We previously observed that nuclear receptor-related protein 1 (nurr1)-mediated proliferative pathway was impaired in intestinal I/R injury. Here, we aimed to assess the effect of nurr1 on intestinal barrier function and to evaluate microRNA (miRNA)-nurr1-mediated restoration of intestinal barrier function in intestinal I/R injury. We induced an in vivo intestinal I/R injury mouse model by clamping and then releasing the superior mesenteric artery. We also performed an in vitro study in which we exposed Caco-2 and IEC-6 cells to hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) conditions to stimulate intestinal I/R injury. Our results demonstrated that nurr1 regulated intestinal epithelial development and barrier function after intestinal I/R injury. miR-381-3p, which directly suppressed nurr1 translation, was identified by microarray and bioinformatics analysis. miR-381-3p inhibition enhanced intestinal epithelial proliferation and barrier function in vitro and in vivo and also attenuated remote organ injury and improved survival. Importantly, nurr1 played an indispensable role in the protective effect of miR-381-3p inhibition. Collectively, these findings show that miR-381-3p inhibition mitigates intestinal I/R injury by enhancing nurr1-mediated intestinal epithelial proliferation and barrier function. This discovery may lead to the development of therapeutic interventions for intestinal I/R injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between expression of FoxM1 and clinical parameters of patients with gastric cancer (GC) has yet to be fully established. METHODS A systematic search was performed. Odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (CI) were used to assess association between expression of FoxM1 and clinical parameters and the prognostic value of patients with GC. RESULTS Eight studies involving 529 patients with GC were identified. Overall, the pooled results showed that expression of FoxM1 was associated with TNM stage (OR: 0.482, 95%CI: 0.275-0.845, P = 0.011), depth of invasion (OR: 0.617, 95%CI: 0.382-0.998, P = 0.049) and lymph node metastasis (OR: 2.084, 95%CI: 1.305-3.328, P = 0.002) in the patients with GC. Whereas, expression of FoxM1 was not associated with gender (OR: 1.143, 95%CI: 0.726-1.799, P = 0.564) and tumors' differentiation (OR: 0.991, 95%CI: 0.624-1.575, P = 0.971) of GC. Expression of FoxM1 was also associated with poor prognosis of overall survival (OS) in the patients with GC (one year OS: OR: 0.218, 95%CI: 0.103-0.459, P = 0.000; three years OS: OR: 0.178, 95%CI: 0.093-0.340, P = 0.000; five years OS: OR: 0.180, 95%CI: 0.095-0.341, P = 0.000). CONCLUSION Expression of FoxM1 is associated with TNM stage, depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis of the patients with GC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The current reports on the association of claudin-1 expression with colorectal cancer (CRC) result were controversial. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the correlation between claudin-1 expression and the clinical parameters and assess the prognostic value of claudin-1 in CRC. METHODS Systematic searches on PubMed, Embase, Elsevier, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), Wanfang data and Cochrane Library prior to August 2016 were performed. The pooled odds ratio (OR) with its 95% confidence interval (95 %CI) was used to assess association between claudin-1 expression and clinical parameters of CRC patients, and to assess association between claudin-1 expression and the prognostic value of CRC patients. RESULTS Eight studies with a total of 1146 CRC patients were included. Overall, the pooled results showed that low expression of claudin-1 was associated with TNM III-IV stage of CRC patients (OR: 1.714, 95%CI: 1.215-2.418, P = 0.002). Low expression of claudin-1 was also associated with a poor survival in CRC patients (one year survival rate: OR: 2.112, 95%CI: 1.028-4.339, P = 0.042; three years survival rate: OR: 1.501, 95%CI: 1.030-2.186, P = 0.035; five years survival rate: OR: 1.794, 95%CI: 1.139-2.439, P = 0.000). Whereas, low expression of claudin-1 is not associated with gender (OR: 1.259, 95%CI: 0.957-1.657, P = 0.100), tumors' differentiation (OR: 1.317, 95%CI: 0.916-1.892, P = 0.137), depth of invasion (OR: 1.016, 95 %CI: 0.701-1.472, P = 0.935) and lymph node metastasis group (OR: 1.286, 95% CI: 0.982-1.684, P = 0.06) of CRC. CONCLUSIONS Low expression of claudin-1 is associated with TNM III-IV stage and poor prognosis of CRC patients. Low expression of claudin-1 is not associated with gender, tumors' differentiation depth of invasion and lymph node involvement of CRC patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prognostic factors which can improve the overall survival (OS) of patients with T4 gastric carcinoma (GC) are still controversial: a meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the impact of clinicopathological parameters on survival after MOR among patients with T4 GC. METHODS A systematic search was performed. Odd risks (ORs) of patients with T4 GC were used to calculate the relationship between clinicopathological parameters and OS. RESULTS Nine studies involving 941 patients with T4 GC were identified. Well-moderate differentiation led to increased 1-, 3-, 5-year OS with an OR of 2.63, 1.58 and 1.45. Borrmann type I-II led to increased 1-, 3-year OS with an OR of 1.67 and 2.08. No lymph node metastasis led to increased 1-, 3-, 5-year OS with an OR of 7.16, 3.18 and 3.71. Total gastrectomy led to increased 1-, 3-year OS with an OR of 2.01 and 1.79. ≥2 Organs resected led to increased 1-, 3-year OS with an OR of 2.19 and 2.19. TNM stage II-III led to increased 1-, 3-year OS with an OR of 3.68 and 5.75. Curative resection led to increased 1-, 3-, 5-year OS with an OR of 4.46, 5.80 and 5.98. CONCLUSION Well-moderate differentiation, Borrmann type I-II, no lymph node metastasis, total gastrectomy, ≥2 organs resected, TNM stage II-III and curative resection were positive prognostic factors for OS of patients with T4 GC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epilepsy remains one of the most common clinical neurological disorders. About a third of patients with epilepsy are refractory to drug treatment, mainly as a result of focal cortical dysplasia (FCD). In this study, we analyzed the aberrant expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the cortex and plasma of FCD patients. METHODS Cortical samples were collected from nine patients with refractory epilepsy caused by FCD who underwent surgery, and from eight volunteers (control group) undergoing emergency surgery for hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage. miRNA expression in the cortex was detected by microarray analysis and miR-323a-5p expression levels in the cortex were analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). We also collected plasma samples from 30 patients with refractory epilepsy caused by FCD and from 23 healthy controls, and compared differential expression of miR-323a-5p in the plasma using qRT-PCR. RESULTS miRNA microarray analysis showed that expression of miR-323a-5p was upregulated in the FCD group compared with the control group, and miR-323a-5p expression levels in the cortex analyzed by qRT-PCR supported those obtained by microarray analysis. Plasma levels of miR-323a-5p were significantly higher in patient plasma compared with the healthy controls, as determined by qRT-PCR. Furthermore, expression of miR-323a-5p was positively correlated with the duration of epilepsy (p = 0.014) and seizure frequency (p = 0.043). The effectiveness of surgery in patients with FCD was significantly poorer in patients with high plasma levels of miR-323a-5p compared with those with low levels. CONCLUSIONS The expression of miR-323a-5p was significantly elevated in the cortex and plasma of FCD patients. These results suggest that abnormal expression of miR-323a-5p could be used for improving the current diagnosis of FCD and monitoring treatment responses in patients with FCD.

Abstract
AIMS Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and massive epithelial apoptosis are critical in the pathogenesis of intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. We previously found that the Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1)-mediated antioxidant pathway was impaired in the intestine after I/R. Here, we investigate the potential role of SIRT1-targeting microRNAs (miRNAs) in regulating ROS accumulation and apoptosis in intestinal I/R, and the important role SIRT1 involved in. RESULTS C57BL/6 mice were subjected to intestinal I/R induced by occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery followed by reperfusion. Caco-2 cells were incubated under hypoxia/reoxygenation condition to mimic I/R in vivo. We find that SIRT1 is gradually repressed during the early reperfusion, and that this repression results in intestinal ROS accumulation and apoptosis. Using bioinformatics analysis and real-time PCR, we demonstrate that miR-34a-5p and miR-495-3p are significantly increased among the 41 putative miRNAs that can target SIRT1. Inhibition of miR-34a-5p, but not miR-495-3p, attenuates intestinal I/R injury, as demonstrated by repressing p66shc upregulation, manganese superoxide dismutase repression, and the caspase-3 activation in vitro and in vivo; it further alleviates systemic injury, as demonstrated by reducing inflammatory cytokine release, attenuating lung and liver lesions, and improving survival. Interestingly, SIRT1 plays an indispensable role in the protection afforded by miR-34a-5p inhibition. INNOVATION This study provides the first evidence of miRNAs in regulating oxidative stress and apoptosis in intestinal I/R. CONCLUSION miR-34a-5p knockdown attenuates intestinal I/R injury through promoting SIRT1-mediated suppression of epithelial ROS accumulation and apoptosis. Abstract
The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of Ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1) on cerebral and cerebellar injury in experimental obstructive jaundice (OJ). OJ was done by ligature and section of extrahepatic biliary duct. Rg1 was injected intraperitoneally (10 mg kg(-1)d(-1) or 20 mg kg(-1) d(-1)). Comparison of serum total bile salts (TBA), total bilirubin (TBil), direct bilirubin (DBil), TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β among groups. Malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were determined, also apoptosis and mRNA and protein levels of TIPE2 (TNF-α-inducible protein 8-like 2) were tested in cerebrum and cerebellum. Our results showed that Rg1 reduced MDA and apoptosis in cerebrum and cerebellum induced by OJ, also GSH and antioxidant enzyme activity were raised obviously in rats treated with Rg1. Moreover, decreased mRNA and protein levels of TIPE2 in OJ rats and Rg1 could improve the decreased mRNA and protein levels of TIPE2 in OJ rats. In conclusion, Rg1 decreased oxidative stress and apoptosis, also recovered the antioxidant status and mRNA and protein levels of TIPE2 in the cerebrum and cerebellum of OJ rats.

Abstract
Ginsenoside Rg1, one of the biologically active ingredients of ginseng, has been considered to be a candidate neuroprotective drug. The objective of the study was to study the protective effects of Rg1 through the peripheral and central inflammation in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced Parkinson's disease (PD) mouse model. Rg1 treatment protected TH-positive cells in the SNpc region from MPTP toxicity measured with immunofluoresence. The protein expression levels of TH in the SNpc region of MPTP-induced mice following treatment with Rg1 were higher than MPTP-induced mice which were tested with Western blot. The ratio of CD3(+)CD4(+) to CD3(+)CD8(+) T cells and CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells in the blood increased in MPTP-induced mice following treatment with Rg1 which were detected by flow cytometry analysis. Moreover, Rg1 reduced the serum concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1β and IL-6 which were tested with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In addition, Rg1 inhibited the activation of microglia and reduced the infiltration of CD3(+) T cells into the SNpc region which were measured by immunofluorescence. Our results indicated that Rg1 may represent a promising drug for the treatment of PD via the regulation of the peripheral and central inflammation.

Abstract
ICAM-1 (CD54) plays an important role in the cell-cell interaction and migration of leukocytes. Previous studies have shown that ICAM-1 is involved in inflammatory reactions and that a defect in ICAM-1 gene inhibits allergic contact hypersensitivity. This study indicates that the migration of hapten presenting Langerhans cells into the regional lymph nodes was significantly reduced in ICAM-1-deficient mice compared to wild-type C57BL/6 mice. The reduced number of dendritic cells in regional lymph nodes did not result from abnormal migration of Langerhans cells into the skin of ICAM-1-deficient mice. The concentration and distribution of Langerhans cells in the naïve skin of ICAM-1-deficient mice was equal to that of wild-type mice. Following hapten sensitization, Langerhans cell migration out of the skin and recruitment of fresh Langerhans cells back to the epidermis was not affected in ICAM-1-deficient mice. Further experiments demonstrated that ICAM-1 deficiency on lymphatic endothelium rather than on dendritic cells was responsible for the reduced migration of Langerhans cells into draining lymph nodes. This study indicates that ICAM-1 regulates the migration of dendritic cells into regional lymph nodes but not into or out of the skin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To improve the level of diagnosis and treatment of intracranial tuberculoma. METHODS Fourteen intracranial tuberculoma cases were hospitalized in the past five years, accounting for 0.9 per cent of the intracranial tumors in the same period. Five out of fourteen cases were treated conservatively while other nine were treated surgically. All the cases were received 6-month short-course anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy, among which only one case's treatment was prolonged to one year. RESULT All the cases had good outcome, none of them dead. CONCLUSIONS Operative indications of intracranial tuberculoma cases should be applied strictly. Good result could be gained via a short-course anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy, no matter operation was performed or not.
