Physics at the [Formula: see text] linear collider

A comprehensive review of physics at an [Formula: see text] linear collider in the energy range of [Formula: see text] GeV-3 TeV is presented in view of recent and expected LHC results, experiments from low-energy as well as astroparticle physics. The report focusses in particular on Higgs-boson, top-quark and electroweak precision physics, but also discusses several models of beyond the standard model physics such as supersymmetry, little Higgs models and extra gauge bosons. The connection to cosmology has been analysed as well.

IMMUNOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON BLOOD GROUPS : XI. SPECIES DIFFERENCES AMONG BLOOD GROUP A SUBSTANCES

The reactions of hog, human, and horse blood group A substances with antibodies produced on injection of these substances into individuals of blood groups B and O have been studied by hemagglutination inhibition and by quantitative precipitin technics. Species differences in reactivity with antisera exist among these blood group A substances. Hog and human A substances are very closely related chemically as evidenced by their extensive cross-reaction while horse A substance crossreacts much less with antisera to both hog and human A substances. Analysis for hexosamine of specific precipitates of hog and human A substances and antibody to human A substance formed as a consequence of heterospecific pregnancy has shown that essentially all of the glucosamine of the blood group substance is precipitated.

Exercise capacity and Doppler pressure measurements in symptomatic peripheral arterial obstructive disease

BACKGROUND

Doppler pressure measurements are a useful diagnostic tool in peripheral arterial obstructive disease. The aim of our study was to determine whether these pressure values do predict the degree of impairment of the walking capacity in symptomatic patients.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We compared the claudication distances (CDI: initial claudication distance, CDA: absolute claudication distance) of 939 patients (63 +/- 11 years) with stable intermittent claudication (Fontaine IIb) with the ankle pressure values at rest (APR) and after exercise (APE), with the ankle/brachial pressure index at rest (ABIR) and after exercise (ABIE), and with the ratio (ABIRATIO = ABIE/ABIR). Ankle systolic pressures were obtained using an 8 MHz Doppler probe. CD was measured by a treadmill test at constant-load conditions (3 km/hr; inclination 12%). Brachial systolic pressures were obtained using an automated blood pressure monitor. The values of the objectively worse leg were correlated with CDI and CDA.

RESULTS

Low Doppler pressure values were not accompanied by significantly shorter walking distances in symptomatic patients. The resting pressure values (APR, ABIR) did not correlate with the claudication distances (CDI: 54 +/- 31 m; CDA: 87 +/- 41 m). For the exercise values (APE, ABIE), even a very slight inverse correlation with the claudication distances was found. In addition, the correlation between the pressure index ratio and the walking distances (ABIRATIO vs. CDI: r = -0.25, p < 0.01; ABIRATIO vs. CDA: r = -0.20, p < 0.01) was inverse, too, but slightly more pronounced.

CONCLUSIONS

In patients with intermittent claudication the ankle artery pressures and the indices derived from these pressure values do not predict the walking distance. Therefore, the decision for angioplasty or bypass surgery should be made with regards to the impairment of quality of life rather than Doppler pressure values.

Supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified models with Yukawa unification and a positive mu term

Supersymmetric grand unified models based on SO(10) gauge symmetry have many desirable features, including the unification of Yukawa couplings. Including D-term contributions to scalar masses arising from the breakdown of SO(10), Yukawa coupling unification only to 30% can be achieved in models with a positive superpotential Higgs mass. The superparticle mass spectrum is highly constrained and yields relatively light top squarks and charginos. Surprisingly, the pattern of grand unified theory scale soft supersymmetry breaking masses are close to those found in the context of inverted hierarchy models.

Knowledge of human papillomavirus infection among young adult men and women: implications for health education and research

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of the genital tract is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and a subset of genital tract HPVs are etiologically associated with cervical cancer. The prevalence of HPV infection is highest among adolescents and young adults. This study was undertaken to explore first year college students' knowledge about HPVs and to determine whether there were gender differences in this knowledge. An anonymous survey was distributed to all first year students at a private university. The results were analyzed by gender. We found that 96.2% of males and 95.4% of females had heard of genital warts, although only 4.2% of males and 11.6% of females knew that HPV caused genital warts. Although there was a greater awareness of genital warts than HPV in this population, students were uncertain about modes of transmission of both genital warts and HPVs, and unclear about the importance of HPV infection relative to other STDs. For both men and women (87% and 87.4%, respectively), health education classes were the major source of information about STDs. We conclude that health education should be reconceptualized to incorporate a better understanding of STDs, including HPV infection, by engaging adolescents and young adults in exploring the biological and social context of STDs, their public health importance, strategies for prevention, and the uncertainty of our scientific knowledge.

Collagen abnormalities in conjunctiva of patients with cicatricial pemphigoid

The purpose of this study was to analyze the distribution and types of collagen in the substantia propria of the conjunctiva of patients with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP). Biopsy specimens were collected from 10 patients with active OCP, five patients with active Behçet's disease, nine patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis, five patients with chronic rosacea blepharoconjunctivitis, and six normal patients undergoing cataract surgery. Cryostat tissue sections were cut and stained using an indirect immunofluorescence technique, employing a panel of primary antibodies directed against seven collagen types. Differences between OCP, Behçet's, and normal conjunctiva were seen in the staining for collagen types III, IV, and VII. The intensity of staining for type III collagen was increased in the substantia propria of OCP conjunctiva as compared to the other groups. The basement membrane zone (BMZ) of OCP patients was typically disrupted and fragmented in appearance when stained for type IV collagen, a finding not seen in the non-OCP specimens. The BMZ staining pattern for type VII collagen in OCP conjunctiva was even more disrupted than that seen for type IV collagen, particularly on the posterior side, which was thickened and reduplicated with short fibers extending into the superficial stroma. The production of type III collagen by fibroblasts of the substantia propria is a common feature of diseases associated with subepithelial fibrosis. The damage to the epithelial BMZ and the subsequent attempt at repair with aberrant type IV and VII collagen production are unique to conjunctiva affected by OCP.

Isolated late metastasis of a renal cell cancer treated by radical distal pancreatectomy

A 53-year-old man underwent right nephrectomy for a locally renal cell carcinoma with concomitant resection of a solitary metastasis in the right lung. Ten years later, he presented with haematochezia caused by a tumour in the tail of pancreas, invading the transverse colon and the greater curvature of the stomach. The tumour was radically resected, and histological examination revealed a solitary metastasis of the previous renal cell carcinoma. This case illustrates a rare indication for pancreatic resection because of pancreatic metastasis.

What should I do about my patient's gall stones?

The problem of benign biliary disease is one that causes significant morbidity and social economic strain in the western world. The classical treatment, cholecystectomy, has been challenged by various medical and surgical techniques in a seemingly random nature. The development of the treatment of gall stone disease is reviewed by analysis of published studies over the last 20 years. The advantages and disadvantages are discussed as an overview and summary of the current management of gall stone disease in the light of our knowledge of its malignant potential.
