Higher expression of circulating miR-182 as a novel biomarker for breast cancer

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), present in the serum in a stable and reproducible manner, may be used as biomarkers for various diseases. Few studies have previously investigated circulating miRNAs in the peripheral blood of breast cancer (BC) patients. To identify the role of serum miR-182 levels in BC, the present study detected miR-182 levels in the serum of 46 BC patients and 58 controls, by quantitative PCR. The results showed that the serum miR-182 levels in BC patients were significantly higher compared with the serum of healthy controls (P<0.01). The miR-182 was also overexpressed in the BC tissues compared with the para-carcinoma tissues. Furthermore, the serum levels of miR-182 in the estrogen receptor (ER)-positive patients were considerably lower compared with those in the ER-negative patients. The serum levels of miR-182 in the progesterone receptor (PR)-positive patients were also found to be lower compared with those in the PR-negative patients. The current study highlights results consistent with miR-182 as a novel and valuable biomarker for the diagnosis of BC.

Polymorphisms of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor gene affect antihypertensive response to angiotensin receptor blockers in hypertensive Chinese

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system plays a key role in regulating blood pressure by maintaining vascular tone and the water/sodium balance. Many antihypertensive drugs target the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, but the effect differs considerably among hypertensive patients. We investigated whether genetic variants of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor are associated with blood pressure response to angiotensin II receptor blockers in hypertensive Chinese patients. After a 2-week single-blind placebo run-in period, 148 patients with mild-to-moderate primary hypertension received monotherapy with 80 mg/day telmisartan and then were followed up for 8 weeks. The 1166A/C, 573T/C, -810A/T, and -521C/T polymorphisms of the AT1R gene were determined through PCR and RFLP analysis. The relationship between these polymorphisms and changes in blood pressure was observed and evaluated after 8 weeks of treatment. Patients with the AT1R -521CC genotype had a significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure compared to those carrying the T allele. No significant reduction in blood pressure was found in individuals with the 1166A/C, 573T/C, or -810A/T polymorphisms of the AT1R gene. We conclude that only the AT1R -521CC genotype is associated with a significant decrease in blood pressure in response to telmisartan treatment in Chinese hypertensive patients.

Low-dose cerebral CT perfusion imaging (CTPI) of senile dementia: diagnostic performance

To evaluate the clinical value of low-dose cerebral CTPI in the diagnosis of senile dementia, as an attempt to develop a new imaging method to diagnose this disease and measure its severity. 95 patients of senile dementia (52 with Alzheimer's disease (AD), 43 with vascular dementia (VD)) and 30 healthy subjects (control group) were underwent low-dose cerebral CTPI examinations with multi-slices spiral CT. The CTPI images were analyzed using perfusion software. Derived perfusion parameters including cerebral blood volume (CBV), cerebral blood flow (CBF), mean transit time (MTT) and time to peak (TTP) were measured. Diagnostic value of perfusion parameters was evaluated by receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The CBV and CBF of both of frontal lobe, temporal lobe, hippocampus and basal ganglial area in the patients with senile dementia were much lower than those in the healthy group. And MTT and TTP of the areas above-mentioned in the senile dementia group were higher than those in the control group. There was statistically significant difference between them (p<0.05). The areas under ROC curves of perfusion parameters left temporal lobe MTT, left the basal ganglia MTT and left the hippocampus MTT to diagnose senile dementia were 0.959, 0.920, 0.916, and diagnostic accuracy rate is higher. The areas under ROC curve of the left frontal MTT, the left basal ganglia CBV were 0.867 and 0.819, diagnosis accuracy medium. The results showed that cerebral CTPI is valuable for the diagnosis of senile dementia.

[Effects of adhesion releasing under nerve block and arthrolysis on adhesive scapulohumeral periarthritis: a comparative study]

OBJECTIVE

To compare the effects of adhesion releasing under nerve block and arthrolysis on adhesive scapulohumeral periarthritis.

METHODS

Sixty patients with adhesive scapulohumeral periarthritis 24 males and 36 females, aged 52.5 (40 - 67), were randomly divided into 4 equal groups: Group I, undergoing adhesion releasing under brachial plexus block, Group II, undergoing adhesion releasing under stellate ganglion block, Group III, undergoing limited adhesion releasing under stellate ganglion block, and Group IV undergoing arthrolysis under stellate ganglion block. The clinical effects were recorded and compared.

RESULTS

The short-term effect of Group IV was significantly superior to the other 3 groups (all P < 0.05). The frequency of block + manipulation treatment of Group I was significantly less than those of the other 3 groups (all P < 0.01), and the frequency of pain point injection of Group I was significantly higher than those of the other 3 groups (all P < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

The 4 methods are all effective for the treatment of adhesive scapulohumeral periarthritis. In particular, arthrolysis under stellate ganglion block shows greater improvement in the joint function and less uncomfortableness caused by numbness and weakness of the arm.
