Effect of personality traits on the oral health-related quality of life in patients with oral lichen planus undergoing treatment

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between personality traits and perceived treatment success in oral lichen planus.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 53 patients with diagnosed oral lichen planus were evaluated at the time of diagnosis and along the course of their treatment. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used for evaluating pain and burning sensation, along with an evaluation of the oral health-related quality of life (OHIP) and the clinical severity. In order to determine the personality trait, the NEO-FFI questionnaire was applied. Data were assessed with the statistical software Stata by a multiple linear regression.

RESULTS

A significant relationship between the two personality traits: "conscientiousness" and "extraversion" and a perceived improvement in oral lichen planus could be observed. The higher the "conscientiousness," the better the perceived oral health-related quality of life. Furthermore, "extraversion" had a significant influence on the improvement in clinical severity index (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Personality traits, especially conscientiousness and extraversion, have a significant impact on the perception of therapeutic intervention in oral lichen planus.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

As personalized patient management is gaining importance and psychosocial factors play a significant role in mucosal diseases, the patient's psychological profile should be considered in the oral lichen planus management.

Relationship of Serum Glycemic Status with Serum Zinc Level in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Association of increased diabetes related complication and higher glycemic status in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) has been well recognized. This cross sectional study was carried out to assess serum zinc (Zn) level and its relationship to glycemic status in type 2 DM patients and conducted in the Department of Physiology, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 2014 to June 2015. Fifty (50) type 2 diabetic subjects with age ranging from 40 to 55 years were study group and fifty healthy subjects matched by ages and BMI were control group. Study population was chosen from Bangladesh Institute of Research for Diabetic Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM) General Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting serum glucose (FSG) levels were estimated in the laboratory of the Department of Biochemistry, BIRDEM General Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Serum Zn level was estimated by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. For statistical analysis unpaired Student's 't' test was performed. In this study, mean serum zinc level was significantly (p<0.001) lower in patients than that of control group. On correlation analysis, serum Zn level showed significant negative correlation with FSG and HbA1C levels in type 2 diabetic patients. The results conclude that serum Zn level was reduced in DM which was higher with glycemic status of this disease.

Relationship between Glycemic Status and Serum Chromium Level with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the leading cause of death worldwide, responsible for one third of death, higher glycemic status and diabetes related complication are the most common cause. Low level of chromium (Cr) one of the major contributors higher glycemic status and increased the risk of diabetes related complication in type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study was aimed to find out the relationship between glycemic status and serum chromium level with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study reflected that serum Cr level was reduced in DM which was higher with glycemic status of this disease. Categorization of patients with type 2 DM on the basis of low serum Cr level and high FSG and HbA₁c level will be helpful for risk of diabetic complications.
