Abstract
Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) related to SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data of 11 children with MIS-C, who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrics of Peking University First Hospital from December 2022 to January 2023. Clinical characteristics, treatment, and follow-up of MIS-C were summarized in this study. Results: The 11 cases contained 7 boys and 4 girls, with an age of 4.4 (2.0, 5.5) years on admission. All the patients had fever, with a duration of 7(5, 9) days. Other clinical manifestations included rash in 7 cases, conjunctival hyperemia in 5 cases, red lips and raspberry tongue in 3 cases, lymphadenopathy in 3 cases, and swollen fingers and toes in 2 cases. There were 8 cases of digestive symptoms, 8 cases of respiratory symptoms, and 3 cases of nervous system symptoms. Eight patients had multi-system injuries, and one of them had shock presentation. All 11 patients were infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BF.7 variant. The laboratory examination results showed that all cases had elevated inflammatory indicators, abnormal coagulation function and myocardial damage. Six patients had elevated white blood cell counts, 5 cases had liver function abnormalities, 3 cases had kidney function abnormalities, and 8 cases had coronary artery involvement. All 11 patients received anti-infection treatment, of which 3 cases received only 2 g/kg intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), while the remaining 8 cases received a combination of IVIG and 2 mg/(kg·d) methylprednisolone. Among the 8 cases with coronary artery disease, 6 cases received low molecular weight heparin anticoagulation therapy. All patients were followed up in 2 weeks after being discharged, and their inflammatory markers had returned to normal by that time. The 8 cases with coronary artery disease and 3 cases with pneumonia showed significant improvement or back to normal at the 4-week follow-up. All patients had no new complications or comorbidities during follow-up of more than 3 months. Conclusions: MIS-C may present with Kawasaki disease-like symptoms, with or without gastrointestinal, neurological, or respiratory symptoms. Elevated inflammatory markers, abnormal coagulation function, and cardiac injury contribute to the diagnosis of MIS-C. IVIG and methylprednisolone were the primary treatments for MIS-C, and a favorable short-term prognosis was observed during a follow-up period of more than 3 months.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that compromises the integrity of the supporting tissues of the teeth and leads to the loss of the alveolar bone. The Mir338 cluster has been proven to be a potential target for the treatment of osteoporosis and is also enriched in gingival tissues with periodontitis; however, its role in periodontitis remains unknown. Here, we aimed to use periodontitis as a model to expand our understanding of the Mir338 cluster in osteoimmunology and propose a new target to protect against bone loss during periodontitis progression. Significant enrichment of the Mir338 cluster was validated in gingival tissues from patients with chronic periodontitis and a ligature-induced periodontitis mouse model. In vivo, attenuation of alveolar bone loss after 7 d of ligature was observed in the Mir338 cluster knockout (KO) mice. Interestingly, immunofluorescence and RNA sequencing showed that ablation of the Mir338 cluster reduced osteoclast formation and elevated the inflammatory response, with enrichment of IFN-γ and JAK-STAT signaling pathways. Ablation of the Mir338 cluster also skewed macrophages toward the M1 phenotype and inhibited osteoclastogenesis via Stat1 in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the local administration of miR-338-3p antagomir prevented alveolar bone loss from periodontitis. In conclusion, the Mir338 cluster balanced M1 macrophage polarization and osteoclastogenesis and could serve as a novel therapeutic target against periodontitis-related alveolar bone loss.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the wearing of masks and the knowledge of masks among high-risk positions for overseas import and pollution transmission. Methods: From May 14 to 17, 2022, a convenient sampling method was used to conduct an online survey among 963 workers in high-risk positions for overseas import and pollution transmission in Beijing. The behaviors of individual use and wearing masks, the distribution and supervision of the unit, the knowledge of personal mask protection and the subjective feelings of wearing masks were analyzed. The χ(2) test and logistic regression model were used to analyze the influencing factors of the correct selection of masks. Results: The majority of the workers in high-risk positions for overseas import and pollution transmission were male (86.0%, 828/963), age concentration in 18-44 years old (68.2%, 657/963), and the majority of them had college or bachelor degrees (49.4%, 476/963). 79.4%(765/963) of the workers chose the right type of masks, female, 45-59 years old and high school education or above were the risk factors for correct selection of masks (P <0.05). Workers had good behaviors such as wearing/removing masks, but only 10.5% (101/963) could correctly rank the protective effect of different masks. 98.4% (948/963) of the workers believed that their work units had provided masks to their employees, and 99.1% (954/963) and 98.2%(946/963) of them had organized training and supervision on the use of masks, respectively. 47.4%(456/963) of the workers were uncomfortable while wearing masks. Conclusion: The overall selection and use of masks among occupational groups in high-risk positions for overseas import and pollution transmission in China need to be further standardized. It is necessary to strengthen supervision and inspection on the use of masks among occupational groups, and take improvement measures to improve the comfort of wearing masks.

Abstract
Protoporphyrinogen IX (Protogen IX) oxidase (PPO) catalyzes the oxidation of Protogen IX to Proto IX. PPO is also the target site for diphenyl ether-type herbicides. In plants, there are two PPO encoding genes, PPO1 and PPO2. To date, no PPO gene or mutant has been characterized in monocotyledonous plants. In this study, we isolated a spotted and rolled leaf (sprl1) mutant in rice (Oryza sativa). The spotted leaf phenotype was sensitive to high light intensity and low temperature, but the rolled leaf phenotype was insensitive. We confirmed that the sprl1 phenotypes were caused by a single nucleotide substitution in the OsPPO1 (LOC_Os01g18320) gene. This gene is constitutively expressed, and its encoded product is localized to the chloroplast. The sprl1 mutant accumulated excess Proto(gen) IX and reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in necrotic lesions. The expressions of 26 genes associated with tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, photosynthesis, ROS accumulation, and rolled leaf were significantly altered in sprl1, demonstrating that these expression changes were coincident with the mutant phenotypes. Importantly, OsPPO1-overexpression transgenic plants were resistant to the herbicides oxyfluorfen and acifluorfen under field conditions, while having no distinct influence on plant growth and grain yield. These finding indicate that the OsPPO1 gene has the potential to engineer herbicide resistance in rice.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the regulatory effects of bio-intensity electric field on the transformation of human skin fibroblasts (HSFs). Methods: The experimental research methods were used. HSFs were collected and divided into 200 mV/mm electric field group treated with 200 mV/mm electric field for 6 h and simulated electric field group placed in the electric field device without electricity for 6 h. Changes in morphology and arrangement of cells were observed in the living cell workstation; the number of cells at 0 and 6 h of treatment was recorded, and the rate of change in cell number was calculated; the direction of cell movement, movement velocity, and trajectory velocity within 3 h were observed and calculated (the number of samples was 34 in the simulated electric field group and 30 in 200 mV/mm electric field group in the aforementioned experiments); the protein expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in cells after 3 h of treatment was detected by immunofluorescence method (the number of sample was 3). HSFs were collected and divided into simulated electric field group placed in the electric field device without electricity for 3 h, and 100 mV/mm electric field group, 200 mV/mm electric field group, and 400 mV/mm electric field group which were treated with electric fields of corresponding intensities for 3 h. Besides, HSFs were divided into simulated electric field group placed in the electric field device without electricity for 6 h, and electric field treatment 1 h group, electric field treatment 3 h group, and electric field treatment 6 h group treated with 200 mV/mm electric field for corresponding time. The protein expressions of α-SMA and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were detected by Western blotting (the number of sample was 3). Data were statistically analyzed with Mann-Whitney U test, one-way analysis of variance, independent sample t test, and least significant difference test. Results: After 6 h of treatment, compared with that in simulated electric field group, the cells in 200 mV/mm electric field group were elongated in shape and locally adhered; the cells in simulated electric field group were randomly arranged, while the cells in 200 mV/mm electric field group were arranged in a regular longitudinal direction; the change rates in the number of cells in the two groups were similar (P>0.05). Within 3 h of treatment, the cells in 200 mV/mm electric field group had an obvious tendency to move toward the positive electrode, and the cells in simulated electric field group moved around the origin; compared with those in simulated electric field group, the movement velocity and trajectory velocity of the cells in 200 mV/mm electric field group were increased significantly (with Z values of -5.33 and -5.41, respectively, P<0.01), and the directionality was significantly enhanced (Z=-4.39, P<0.01). After 3 h of treatment, the protein expression of α-SMA of cells in 200 mV/mm electric field group was significantly higher than that in simulated electric field group (t=-9.81, P<0.01). After 3 h of treatment, the protein expressions of α-SMA of cells in 100 mV/mm electric field group, 200 mV/mm electric field group, and 400 mV/mm electric field group were 1.195±0.057, 1.606±0.041, and 1.616±0.039, respectively, which were significantly more than 0.649±0.028 in simulated electric field group (P<0.01). Compared with that in 100 mV/mm electric field group, the protein expressions of α-SMA of cells in 200 mV/mm electric field group and 400 mV/mm electric field group were significantly increased (P<0.01). The protein expressions of α-SMA of cells in electric field treatment 1 h group, electric field treatment 3 h group, and electric field treatment 6 h group were 0.730±0.032, 1.561±0.031, and 1.553±0.045, respectively, significantly more than 0.464±0.020 in simulated electric field group (P<0.01). Compared with that in electric field treatment 1 h group, the protein expressions of α-SMA in electric field treatment 3 h group and electric field treatment 6 h group were significantly increased (P<0.01). After 3 h of treatment, compared with that in simulated electric field group, the protein expressions of PCNA of cells in 100 mV/mm electric field group, 200 mV/mm electric field group, and 400 mV/mm electric field group were significantly decreased (P<0.05 or P<0.01); compared with that in 100 mV/mm electric field group, the protein expressions of PCNA of cells in 200 mV/mm electric field group and 400 mV/mm electric field group were significantly decreased (P<0.05 or P<0.01); compared with that in 200 mV/mm electric field group, the protein expression of PCNA of cells in 400 mV/mm electric field group was significantly decreased (P<0.01). Compared with that in simulated electric field group, the protein expressions of PCNA of cells in electric field treatment 1 h group, electric field treatment 3 h group, and electric field treatment 6 h group were significantly decreased (P<0.01); compared with that in electric field treatment 1 h group, the protein expressions of PCNA of cells in electric field treatment 3 h group and electric field treatment 6 h group were significantly decreased (P<0.05 or P<0.01); compared with that in electric field treatment 3 h group, the protein expression of PCNA of cells in electric field treatment 6 h group was significantly decreased (P<0.01). Conclusions: The bio-intensity electric field can induce the migration of HSFs and promote the transformation of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts, and the transformation displays certain dependence on the time and intensity of electric field.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the impact of composite clinical worsening (cCW) events and its components on the prognosis of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with congenital heart disease (CHD-PAH). Methods: This is a retrospective study. Patients who were diagnosed with CHD-PAH in Beijing Anzhen Hospital between January 2007 and July 2018, were included, and their baseline clinical data including demographic, clinical manifestations and New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification were collected retrospectively. All-cause deaths and clinical worsening events were recorded, which included syncope, PAH related hospitalization, NYHA classification deterioration and ≥ 2 PAH related clinical symptoms (dyspnea, hemoptysis, edema, chest pain, palpitations, cyanosis) appearance/progress. Three kinds of cCW events were defined: cCW1 (included PAH related hospitalization, NYHA classification deterioration), cCW2 (increased syncope on the basis of cCW1) and cCW3 (increased ≥ 2 PAH related clinical symptoms appearance/progress on the basis of cCW2). The Kaplan-Meier survival curve was used to analyze the long-term survival of the included patients. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used to evaluate the impact of cCW events and their components on the risk of all-cause mortality. Results: A total of 525 patients with CHD-PAH were included in this study. The median age at diagnosis was 20.7 (11.2, 30.3) years. There were 43.8% children (<18 years), and 68.8% female patients. There were 431 patients (82.1%) with NYHA classification II. A total of 180 patients had PAH symptoms at diagnosis. The median follow-up time was 4.5 (2.6, 6.7) years. Forty-seven patients (9.0%) died during the follow-up period. Survival rates at 1, 5 and 10 years after diagnosis of PAH were 98.0%, 89.9% and 84.4%, respectively. Cox multivariate analysis showed that NYHA classification deterioration (HR=3.901, 95%CI 1.863-8.169, P<0.001), ≥2 PAH symptoms appearance/progress (HR=4.458, 95%CI 1.870-10.625, P<0.001), PAH-related hospitalization (HR=4.058, 95%CI 1.851-8.896, P<0.001) and syncope (HR=11.313, 95%CI 4.860-26.332, P<0.001) were independent predictors of increased risk of death. All 3 kinds of cCW events were significantly associated with the significantly increased risk of death, and cCW2 was highly predictive to increased risk of death (HR=15.476, 95%CI 4.346-37.576, P<0.001). Conclusions: The overall long-term prognosis of CHD-PAH patients in this study is relatively good. cCW events and its components (NYHA classification deterioration, ≥2 PAH symptoms occurrence/worsening, PAH-related hospitalization and syncope) have adverse influence on all-cause death in this patient cohort.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the correlation between different types of microcirculation alterations and the prognosis in patients with septic shock. Methods: This research employed a prospective observational study methodology for selecting subjects with septic shock. Side-stream dark field(SDF) was used to monitor the sublingual microcirculation to determine the total vascular density (TVD), perfused vessel density (PVD), the proportion of perfused vessels (PPV), and the microvascular flow index (MFI), heterogeneity index (HI) indicators. At the bedside, patients with microcirculation disorders were divided into four types: stasis, dilution, heterogeneity, and hyperdynamic. The 30-day survival status after enrollment and hemodynamics parameters were recorded. Results: A total of 64 patients with septic shock were selected in the study, including 18 cases of stasis type, 11 of dilution type, 18 of heterogeneous type, and 17 of hyperdynamic type. There were statistical differences in the mean arterial pressure (MAP) [stasis:(77±9) mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133 kPa), dilution:(80±11) mmHg, heterogeneity: (78±12) mmHg, hyperdynamic:(88±12) mmHg], TVD [ stasis:(10.84±3.01) mm/mm2, dilution:(9.64±1.72) mm/mm2, heterogeneity:(11.39±2.18) mm/mm2, hyperdynamic: (11.87±2.67) mm/mm2 ], PVD [stasis:(5.93±1.94) mm/mm2, dilution:(6.86±1.48) mm/mm2, heterogeneity: (8.31±1.78) mm/mm2, hyperdynamic:(9.68±2.46) mm/mm2], PPV [stasis:52.45 (46.25, 63.33)%, dilution:73.70 (61.50, 75.20)%, heterogeneity: 71.25 (67.95, 77.00)%, hyperdynamic:80.70 (77.25, 86.45)%], MFI(stasis:1.34±0.45, dilution: 1.70±0.38, heterogeneity:1.82±0.28, hyperdynamic:2.25±0.33), and HI [stasis:0.68 (0.51, 1.87), dilution: 0.57 (0.49, 0.64), heterogeneity:0.70 (0.59, 0.91), hyperdynamic: 0.40 (0.37, 0.52)] of the four types of microcirculation alterations. The cumulative survival rates in stasis, dilution, heterogeneity and hyperdynamic types at 30 day were 7/18, 4/11, 10/18 and 14/17, respectively, which in stasis and dilution types was significantly lower than that of hyperdynamic type (χ²=7.221, P=0.007;χ2=6.764, P=0.009). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed the type of microcirculation alterations (stasis:RR=4.551, 95%CI 1.228-16.864, P=0.023; dilution:RR=4.086, 95%CI 1.011-16.503, P=0.048), acute physiology and chronic health evaluation Ⅱ (RR=1.077, 95%CI 1.006-1.153, P=0.032) were independent prognostic risk factors. Conclusions: Microcirculation alterations are common in patients with septic shock, and it is hard to predict the types of microcirculation alterations with hemodynamics parameters. The prognosis of patients with septic shock is related to the types of microcirculation alterations, suggesting that routine monitoring of microcirculation might be helpful to guide hemodynamic therapy.

Abstract
Previously, we have identified a gene encoding thrombospondin-related anonymous protein of Babesia gibsoni (BgTRAP), and have shown that the antisera raised against recombinant BgTRAP expressed in Escherichia coli inhibited the growth of parasites. In the present study, a recombinant vaccinia virus expressing the BgTRAP (VV/BgTRAP) was constructed. A specific band with a molecular mass of 80 kDa, which is similar to that of native BgTRAP on the merozoites of B. gibsoni, was detected in the supernatant of VV/ BgTRAP-infected RK13 cells. Mice inoculated with VV/BgTRAP produced a specific antiBgTRAP response. The antiserum against VV/BgTRAP showed reactivity against the native BgTRAP on parasites. These results indicated that the recombinant vaccinia virus expressing BgTRAP might be a vaccine candidate against canine B. gibsoni infection.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the risk factors for death in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension related to congenital heart disease (PAH-CHD) and the clinical characteristics of different subtypes in patients with PAH-CHD. Methods: It was a retrospective study. A total of 507 PAH-CHD patients, who were hospitalized in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology of Beijing Anzhen Hospital between September 2005 and May 2019, were included. Patients were divided into 4 subgroups: (1) Eisenmenger syndrome(ES) group. (2) PAH associated with prevalent systemic-to-pulmonary shunts(SP) group. (3) PAH associated with small defects(SD) group. (4) PAH after defect correction(CD) group. According to the complexity of cardiac malformation, patients were divided into simple-medium complex malformation group and complex malformation group. According to the location of shunts, patients were divided into pre-tricuspid group, post-tricuspid group, and mixed group or complex deformity group. Baseline clinical data of patients were collected from the electronic medical record system. Demographic data (age, gender, etc.), percutaneous oxygen saturation(SPO(2)), New York Heart Association(NYHA) cardiac function classification, 6 minutes walking distance(6MWD), and B type natriuretic peptide(BNP), systolic pulmonary arterial pressure(sPAP) estimated by echocardiography and mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP), mean right atrial pressure(mRAP), cardiac index(CI), and calculated pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) estimated by right heart catheterization were compared among various groups. The results of regular follow-up of all enrolled patients were collected, including the status of monotherapy or combination of PAH-targeted drugs during the follow-up period, cardiac-related adverse events(hemopysis, syncope, edema, arrhythmia, etc.) and primary endpoint event(all-cause death) were obtained and analyzed. Risk factors for all-cause death were analyzed using univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis model. Results: The median age at diagnosis was 23.1(13.9,32.1) years, 345 cases(68.0%) were female. Two hunderds and thirty-five cases(46.4%) were diagnosed with ES; 193 cases(38.1%) were diagnosed with CD, 47 cases (9.3%) were diagnosed with SD. Among them, 32 cases(6.3%) were in the SP group. All 507 patients underwent echocardiography examination, there were significant differences in sPAP among different clinical subgroups(P<0.001). A total of 289 patients(57.0%) received right heart catheterization examination, the results showed that the ES group had the highest mPAP and PVR and the lowest mRAP(all P<0.001), the CD group had the highest mRAP and CI(both P<0.001). The 6MWD in the ES group was significantly shorter than that in the SP, SD, and CD groups(all P<0.001). The proportion of patients with NYHA class Ⅲ/Ⅳ was higher in SD group than in SP group(P<0.001), which was similar between SD, ES and CD groups (P values were 0.077 and 0.072, respectively). At admission, the proportion of patients with NYHA class Ⅰ/Ⅱwas the highest in SP group(96.9% (31/32) ), followed by CD group (85.5%(165/193)) and the ES group(85.1%(200/235)), and the SD group(75.0%(35/47)). The BNP level at admission was also higher in SD group than in SP, ES and CD groups(P<0.001). Of the 507 patients, 379(74.8%) patients received PAH-targeted drug therapy at the last follow-up, and the treatment plan was mainly monotherapy(75.7%(287/379)). The median follow-up time was 3.6(2.0, 5.6) years and 37(7.3%) patients died, including 13 in the CD group, 17 in the ES group, and 7 in the SD group. No deaths occurred in the SP group. Right heart failure was the most common cause of death(11(29.7%)), followed by severe hemoptysis dyspnea(7(18.9%)), sudden cardiac death(6(16.2%)), and pulmonary hypertensive crisis(4(10.8%)). Kaplan-Meier curve showed that survival rates of end-point-free events at 1, 3, 5 and 10 years after diagnosis of PAH were 98.0%, 95.4%, 89.9%, and 84.4%, respectively; there were statistically significant differences in survival among the subgroups(P=0.026); there was no significant difference in the survival rate between the ES group and the CD group(P=0.918), and both were higher than the SD group(P values were 0.011 and 0.013, respectively). Univariate Cox regression analysis showed that NYHA class Ⅲ/Ⅳ and BNP>100 ng/L at admission were the risk factors for all-cause death in patients with PAH-CHD(HR=6.452, 95%CI 3.378-12.346, P<0.001, and HR=2.481, 95%CI 1.225-5.025, P=0.012). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that NYHA class Ⅲ/Ⅳ was an independent risk factor for all-cause death in patients with PAH-CHD(HR=4.998, 95%CI 1.246-20.055, P=0.023). Conclusions: PAH-CHD patients with different clinical subtypes have different clinical symptoms, cardiac functional class, hemodynamic characteristics, and mid to long-term survival rates. SP patients have the best prognosis, outcome of ES and CD patients is similar, and SD patients have the worst prognosis. NYHA class Ⅲ/Ⅳ is an independent risk factor for all-cause death in patients with PAH-CHD.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the value of forced expiratory volume in 6 seconds (FEV(6)) in the evaluation of pulmonary function in Chinese elderly males. Methods: Pulmonary function tests of elderly who had received regular physical examination in Beijing Hospital from July 2003 to April 2015 were analyzed on subjects with the following characteristics: aged 60 years or older, completion of bronchial dilation test and able to exhale for at least six seconds. The included subjects were divided into 2 groups: 60-<80 years group and ≥80 years group. The association of FEV(6) with forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV(1)/FEV(6) with FEV(1)/FVC, the diagnostic efficiency and influencing factor of FEV(6) and FEV(1)/FEV(6) were analyzed; the value of FEV(6) in the evaluation of pulmonary function in the study population was evaluated. Results: A total of 475 elderly men aged 60 years or older were enrolled, with a mean age of (77.13±9.53) years. Totally there were 269 subjects in 60-<80 years group, which accounted for 56.6%; 206 subjects were in ≥80 years group, which accounted for 43.4%. There were 292 subjects with irreversible airflow obstruction, accounting for 61.5%. In all the included subjects, FEV(6) was significantly correlated with FVC and post-bronchodilator FEV(1)/FEV(6) was significantly correlated with post-bronchodilator FEV(1)/FVC(r=0.971, 0.978; both P<0.001), which were similar in 60-<80 years group and ≥80 years group (r=0.967, 0.974 and r=0.955, 0.967; all P<0.001). FEV(1)/FEV(6) showed excellent accuracy in diagnosing airflow obstruction[area under curve (AUC)=0.990(95%CI: 0.983-0.996); P<0.001]. Using FEV(1)/FVC<0.70 as a reference, FEV(1)/FEV(6)<0.73 had the best sensitivity (0.952) and specificity (0.945), and there was excellent agreement between the two diagnostic cutoffs (κ=0.891; P<0.001). When difference between before and after bronchial dilation test was analyzed, no correlation was observed between FEV(6) improvement and the improvement of forced expiratory time (r=0.089; P=0.053), but FVC improvement was significantly correlated with the improvement of forced expiratory time (r=0.460; P<0.001). Similar results were also found in subjects with irreversible airflow obstruction. Subjects with FEV(1)/FEV(6)≥0.70 and FEV(1)/FVC<0.70 were categorized as pulmonary function middle group, a total of 73 cases, which included 20 cases ≥80 years old. The proportion of middle group among ≥80 years group was significantly less than that of the 60-<80 years group (χ(2)=8.958; P=0.003). In pulmonary function middle group, FEV(1)/FEV(6) or FEV(1)/FVC had no correlation with inspiratory capacity or residual volume/total lung capacity (all P>0.05). Conclusions: FEV(6) and FEV(1)/FEV(6) are strongly correlated with FVC and FEV(1)/FVC, and there is excellent agreement between FEV(1)/FEV(6) and FEV(1)/FVC. FEV(6) is simple, easy to operate and with less influencing factors, which can be used as a valid alternative for FVC in diagnosing airflow obstruction in elderly males.

Abstract
Objective: To explore clinical application effects of skin distractor on the treatment of scars and to observe effects of skin distractor with different pull speeds on different parts scars of human body. Methods: One hundred and four patients with scars, conforming to the study criteria, were hospitalized in our unit from January 2014 to June 2015. Patients were divided into 2 mm/d group and 4 mm/d group according to the random number table, with 52 patients in each group. After admission, skin distractors were pasted on scars in face and neck, trunk, and extremities of patients in 2 groups, with inner edges of pasteboards close to outside edges of longer sides of scars. Skin distractors in 2 mm/d group and 4 mm/d group were pulled to scars axis direction as speeds of 2 mm/d and 4 mm/d, respectively. Pull time equals values of pull speeds divided by width of scars. Scars were resected after finishing pulling. Immediately after scars resection, skin distractors were pasted again with inner edges of pasteboards close to outside edges of longer sides of incision and removed when stitches were taken out. Scars of patients were scored by Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS), and Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) was used to record scores of patient scar assessment scale (PSAS), observer scar assessment scale (OSAS) and overall scores of patients and observers of scars of patients before and one year after scars resection. Data were processed with χ(2) test, independent samples t test, paired samples t test, independent samples non-parametric rank-sum test and paired samples non-parametric rank-sum test. Results: (1) Scores of all scars of patients in 2 groups before scars resection were close (with t values from -1.384 to 0.622, P values above 0.05), obviously higher than those of one year post scars resection (with t values from 11.085 to 24.835, P values below 0.01). Scores of scars in face and neck, trunk and extremities in 2 groups before scars resection were close (with Z values from -1.651 to -0.035, t values from -1.549 to 0.219, P values above 0.05), significantly higher than those of one year post scar resection (with Z values from -2.992 to -2.555, t values from 8.739 to 19.076, P values below 0.01). (2) Scores of all scars of patients in 2 mm/d group of one year post scars resection were lower than those in 4 mm/d group (with t values from -2.583 to -2.018, P values below 0.05). PSAS scores of scars in face and neck and trunk in 2 mm/d group of one year post scars resection were lower than those in 4 mm/d group (with Z values respectively -2.385 and -2.198, P values below 0.05), other scores of scars in face and neck and trunk of patients in 2 groups of one year post scars resection were close (with Z values from -1.841 to -0.363, P values above 0.05). VSS scores, PSAS scores, OSAS scores, patients' overall scores, and observers' overall scores in 2 mm/d groups were (4.6±0.8), (28±4), (28±4), (4.7±0.7), (4.8±1.4) points, respectively, lower than those in 4 mm/d group[(5.2±0.8), (32±4), (31±6), (5.5±1.2), (5.5±1.0) points, respectively, with t values from -3.712 to -2.105, P<0.05 or P<0.01]. Conclusions: Skin distractor has better effects on the treatment of scars, and treatment effects of skin distractor in extremities pulled by 2 mm/d are better than those pulled by 4 mm/d.

Abstract
Rice blast caused by Magnaporthe oryzae is one of the most devastating rice diseases worldwide. To understand the genetic diversity of indica landrace accessions and identify simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers that are associated with blast resistance, a population of 276 indica landraces from across the world was constructed. This population was then used to evaluate the blast-resistance phenotype through artificial inoculation under controlled conditions in 2012 and 2013. The genetic diversity and association of the population with resistance were analyzed by examining the phenotype for 160 SSR markers distributed on 12 rice chromosomes. The 276 accessions were classified into seven groups using model- and distance-based cluster analyses. Associations between SSR markers and blast resistance showed that 26 SSR markers were significantly associated with blast resistance in 2012 and 2013 (P < 0.01) and that the phenotypic variation ranged from 2.68 to 13.11%. Nineteen of the markers associated with blast resistance were located in regions where genes or quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been previously reported, and seven were newly identified in this study. These results indicate that marker-trait association has potential advantages over classical linkage analysis and QTL mapping, and that these markers could be used for marker-assisted selection in rice blast-resistance-breeding programs.

Abstract
The MYB-domain proteins exist universally across diverse organisms and regulate numerous processes during the plant life cycle. In the present research, a full-length MYB gene OsMYB511 was identified from rice seedlings through microarray data. Induction of OsMYB511 by cold stress was dramatic in japonica cultivar Jiucaiqing as compared to indica IR26. In addition to cold, OsMYB511 was also markedly induced by osmotic stress, high temperature, and exogenous ABA, suggesting that OsMYB511 is a multiple-stress responsive gene in rice. Tissue-specific expression analysis indicated that OsMYB511 was highly expressed in rice panicles at earlier development stage. Interestingly, OsMYB511 expression is fully subjected to circadian rhythm regulation. The subcellular localization and yeast hybrid assay suggested that OsMYB511 is nucleus-localized transcription activator. Deletion analysis suggested that trans-activation activity of OsMYB511 relied on its C-terminus. Co-expression analysis revealed additional 2 MYB genes co-expressed with OsMYB511, implying that these MYB genes might coordinately regulate stress responses in rice.

Abstract
Bodao, a japonica landrace from the Taihu Lake region of China, is highly resistant to most Chinese isolates of Magnaporthe oryzea, a form of rice blast. To effectively dissect the influence of genetics on this blast resistance, a population of 155 recombinant inbred lines (F2:8) derived from a cross of Bodao x Suyunuo was inoculated with 12 blast isolates. Using a quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping approach, 13 QTL on chromosomes 1, 2, 9, 11, and 12 were detected from Bodao. Five QTL, including qtl11-1-1, qtl11-3-7, qtl11-4-9, qtl12-1-1, and qtl12-2-3, have not been previously reported. The qtl11-3-7 and qtl11-4-9 may be the two main effective QTL and resistant to 7 and 9 isolates, respectively. The results of the present study will be valuable for the fine mapping and cloning of these two new resistance genes.

Abstract
Gliomas display cellular hierarchies with self-renewing tumorigenic glioma stem cells (GSCs) at the apex. The GSC niches function as a regulator of GSC maintenance, however, the exact components of GSC niches that mediate this process are still far from fully defined. Here, we showed that glioma cells with aberrant mesenchymal phenotypes constitute a mesenchymal niche for GSCs. Using patient-derived specimens, we demonstrated that the paracrine PGI signaling, initiated by mesenchymal glioma cells, induces the self-renewal and tumorigenic potentials of GSCs through induction of KLF4. Treatment of intracranial orthotopic xenografts with shPGI or shKLF4 leads to less lethal potency. Our data therefore suggest that blockade of the PGI-KLF4 pathway may provide a therapeutic strategy against GSC niches.

Abstract
Cytosine DNA methylation is a conserved epigenetic regulatory mechanism in both plants and animals. DNA methyltransferases (DNA MTases) not only initiate (de novo) but also maintain the process of DNA methylation. Here, we characterized the genome-wide expression profiles of 10 cytosine DNA MTase genes belonging to 4 subfamilies, MET1, CMT, DNMT2, and DRM, in rice. Tissue-specific gene expression analysis showed that all family members varied widely in their expression and specificities and might be involved in some basic metabolic pathways. Similarly, the expression of all rice cytosine DNA MTase genes was not regulated by plant hormones except OsDRM1a and OsDRM1b, which were downregulated by jasmonic acid. The transcription level of 10 genes in rice shoots and roots was also measured under salt and osmotic stress. Meanwhile, quantitative polymerase chain reaction data of the japonica and indica rice cultivars revealed that there is large variation in the expression activities of all genes. The results provide a foundation to further explore the roles of DNA MTases and the epigenetic regulation of abiotic stress responses in rice.

Abstract
Autophagy, a complex and conserved mechanism, serving as a defense response in all eukaryotic organisms, is regulated by several proteins, among which ATG proteins are the most important due to their involvement in autophagosome formation. ATG6/Beclin-1 proteins, reported to be essential for autophagosome formation and assigned as a conserved domain, were subjected to database searches. We found three homologs in the rice (Oryza sativa) genome. A phylogeny tree was constructed to establish their across species relationship, which divided them into three distinct groups; two for plants, i.e., monocots and dicots, and one for animals. Evolutionary study of this family by critical amino acid conservation analysis revealed significant functional divergence. The finding of important stress-related cis-acting elements in the promoter region of rice ATG6 genes demonstrated their involvement in abiotic stress responses. Furthermore, expression profiling of rice ATG6 genes based on microarray data, as well as by semi-quantitative RT-PCR showed differential expression when subjected to different stresses suggesting the involvement of OsATG6 genes in abiotic stresses (heat, cold and drought) and hormone (abscisic acid) responses. Analysis of co-expressed genes showed that most of them annotated to DNA repair pathways and proteolysis, etc. Collectively, these results suggest the involvement of OsATG6 genes in different stresses, and provide a basis for further functional studies to investigate the biological mechanism of action of these genes under abiotic stresses.

Abstract
A nonlinear oscillation of frequency and amplitude is found by massively parallel gyrokinetic simulations of Alfvén eigenmodes excited by energetic particles in toroidal plasmas. The fast and repetitive frequency chirping is induced by the evolution of coherent structures in the phase space. The dynamics of the coherent structures is controlled by the competition between the phase-space island formation due to the nonlinear particle trapping and the island destruction due to the free streaming. The chirping dynamics provides a conceptual framework for understanding nonlinear wave-particle interactions underlying the transport process in collisionless plasmas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is the most common malformation of children with an incidence of approximately 10% of congenital heart disease patients. There can be a wide spectrum to the severity of the anatomic defects, which include ventricular septal defect, aortic override, right ventricular outflow tract obstruction, and right ventricular hypertrophy. We examined the relationship between right ventricular hypertrophy in patients with TOF and the gene expression of factors in the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal pathway. METHODS To gain insight into the characteristic gene(s) involved in molecular mechanisms of right ventricular hypertrophy in TOF, differential mRNA and micro RNA expression profiles were assessed using expression-based micro array technology on right ventricular biopsies from young TOF patients who underwent primary correction and on normal heart tissue. We then analyzed the gene expression of the MAPK signal pathway using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in normals and TOF patients. RESULTS Using the micro RNA chip V3.0 and human whole genome oligonucleotide microarray V1.0 to detect the gene expression, we found 1068 genes showing altered expression of at least two-fold in TOF patients compared to the normal hearts, and 47 micro RNAs that showed a significant difference of at least two-fold in TOF patients. We then analyzed these mRNAs and micro RNAs by target gene predicting software Microcosm Targets version 5.0, and determined those mRNA highly relevant to the right ventricular hypertrophy by RT-PCR method. There were obvious differences in the gene expression of factors in the MAPK signal pathway when using RT-PCR, which was consistent to the results of the cDNA microarray. CONCLUSION The upregulation of genes in the MAPK signal pathway may be the key events that contribute to right ventricular hypertrophy and stunted angiogenesis in patients with TOF.

Abstract
This study was purposed to establish the methods for isolation, culture, identification and labeling of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSC), so as to provide quantified seed cells for cell transplantation. Bone marrow was collected from SD rat by flushing femur and tibias under sterile condition and BMMSC were purified by adherent culture and amplified in vitro. The immunophenotypes of BMMSC were identified by flow cytometry, the ability of differentiation to osteogenic and adipogenic lineages was detected by alizarin red and oil red O respectively. The BMMSC were transfected by using lentivirus with green fluorescence protein (GFP) gene so as to determine GFP expression in BMMSC. The results demonstrated that the method of adherent culture could effectively isolate and purify rat BMMSC which displayed homogenous fibro-like morphology. The flow cytometry showed that BMMSC expressed CD29, CD44, not expressed CD34, CD45. The BMMSC could differentiated into osteoblasts and adipocytes two mesenchymal lineages when grown in specific medium for each lineage. After being transfected by lentivirus, BMMSC could express GFP. It is concluded that the adherent culture is simple, effective, feasible method to separate MSC from the bone marrow of adult rats; the separated and cultured cells exhibit the biological characteristics of BMMSC and differentiating potential. BMMSC can express GFP efficiently and stably in vitro after being transfected by lentivirus, which can be used to label cells for tracing in vivo.

Abstract
The addition of thiol compounds to the fluorescence system of Zn(II)-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid complex (Zn(II)-HQS) in H3BO3-Na2B4O7 buffer (pH 8.50) solution led to immediate fluorescence inhibition, which was proportional to their amounts. Based on this finding, a novel spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of cysteine (Cys) and reduced glutathione (GSH) has been developed. The detection limits were 17 ng ml(-1) and 0.6 microg ml(-1), respectively. Most amino acids had no interference at high concentrations. The proposed method has been applied to the determination of Cys in protein hydrolysate and cystine electrolyte, and GSH in human blood serum with recoveries of 95.6-104.5%.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Tn5-induced mutations in Agrobacterium vitis F2/5 resulted in both altered grape necrosis and tobacco leaf panel collapse phenotypes, suggesting that the underlying mechanisms of the reactions are related. The reaction on tobacco resembles the classical hypersensitive response (HR) caused by several plant pathogenic bacteria in that it is observable within 14 h, is inhibited by treatment of plants with metabolic inhibitors, and results in the inability to recover the pathogen from the necrotic zone. Strains of A. vitis differ with regard to their efficiency of causing the reaction on tobacco. An EcoRI fragment from one mutant, M6, which is necrosis-altered and HR-minus, was cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis revealed that the Tn5 insertion occurred in a region that shares significant homology with genes involved in long chain fatty acid production by the marine bacteria Shewanella spp. and Moritella marina. Complementation of M6 with a cosmid clone from an F2/5 DNA library restored the tobacco HR and grape necrosis phenotypes.

Abstract
A new fluorescent derivatizing reagent, N-hydroxysuccinimidyl-fluorescein-O-acetate, is used for the high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of amino acids and oligopeptides. This reagent has the advantages of high-detection sensitivity in the visible region, specifically with amino groups, mild derivatization conditions, and little interference induced. The fluorescence properties of the reagent and its derivatives with amino acids and oligopeptides are studied. The conditions of the derivatization are investigated in detail. In the mobile phase of methanol-water (42:58, v/v) containing a 10 mM pH 5.0 citric acid-Na2HPO4 buffer, six amino acids and oligopeptides are separated in 20 min with fluorescence detection at excitation and emission wavelengths of 492 and 513 nm, respectively, with the detection limits for injected standards ranging from 0.64 to 12 fmol.

Abstract
The weak fluorescence of N-[P-(2-benzoxazolyl)phenyl]maleimide (BOPM) can be greatly enhanced by thiol-containing compounds. A sensitive and simple spectrofluorimetric method based on the use of BOPM has been developed for the determination of thiols such as cysteine (Cys) and reduced glutathione (GSH). Calibration plots were linear in the concentration range from 0 to 1.6 x 10(-7) mol L(-1) for Cys and 0 to 1.7 x 10(-7) mol L(-1) for GSH. The detection limits (3a) were 2.36 x 10(-10) mol L(-1) for Cys and 1.49 x 10(-10) mol L(-1) for GSH. Many other amino acids (present at 100-fold greater concentrations) did not interfere with the determination. The proposed method has been used for the determination of Cys in protein hydrolysate and cystine electrolyte or GSH in serum, with recoveries of 95.4-103.7%.

Abstract
Starting from a super-repressed mutant of purR, 3-18, 439 independent candidates of purR- mutants were isolated by using NCE selecting plate with lactose as sole carbon source. Among these mutants. 11 amber mutants were detected by introducing a tRNA suppressor gene. Cotransduction analysis proved that the amber mutation sites of 11 amber mutants all located on purR. Amino acid substitution experiments were performed with three tRNA suppressors, supD, supE and supF, for each purR(am). The results showed that the same amino acid substitution occurred in different site of PurR protein could result in varied effects on purR function; different amino acid substitution occurred at the same position of PurR protein also could produced varied effects on purR function.

Abstract
A new amine-reactive derivatizing reagent, N-hydroxysuccinimidyl fluorescein-O-acetate (SIFA), was developed for catecholamine (CA) analysis in liquid chromatography. The reactivity of this reagent with the CAs norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E), and dopamine (DA) was investigated in detail. In aqueous methanol containing 32 mmol/L pH 9.0 H3BO3-Na2B4O7 buffer, SIFA reacted with NE, E, and DA under mild conditions. The derivatives were separated in 20 min on a C18 column with a mobile phase of methanol/water (38:62, v/v) containing 10 mmol/L pH 5.0 H3cit-Na2HPO4 buffer. At lambda(ex)/lambda(em) = 490/516 nm, the detection limits were 3.2, 12, and 56 fmol, respectively, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, which were comparable to those using 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine as the derivatizing reagent for CA analysis. Amino acids, aliphatic amines, and alcohols had no obvious interference with the determination. The proposed method has been applied to the determination of CAs in human urine, with recoveries of 95.3-103.9%.

Abstract
We present evidence that Rb forms a repressor containing histone deacetylase (HDAC) and the hSWI/SNF nucleosome remodeling complex, which inhibits transcription of genes for cyclins E and A and arrests cells in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. Phosphorylation of Rb by cyclin D/cdk4 disrupts association with HDAC, relieving repression of the cyclin E gene and G1 arrest. However, the Rb-hSWI/SNF complex persists and is sufficient to maintain repression of the cyclin A and cdc2 genes, inhibiting exit from S phase. HDAC-Rb-hSWI/SNF and Rb-hSWI/SNF then appear to maintain the order of cyclin E and A expression during the cell cycle, which in turn regulates exit from G1 and from S phase, respectively.

Abstract
Rb inhibits progression from G1 to S phase of the cell cycle. It associates with a number of cellular proteins; however, the nature of these interactions and their relative significance in cell cycle regulation are still unclear. We present evidence that Rb must normally interact with the E2F family of transcription factors to arrest cells in G1, and that this arrest results from active transcriptional repression by the Rb-E2F complex, not from inactivation of E2F. Thus, a major role of E2F in cell cycle regulation is assembly of this repressor complex. We demonstrate that active repression by Rb-E2F mediates the G1 arrest triggered by TGFbeta, p16INK4a, and contact inhibition.

Abstract
The relative expression of mucin antigens MUC1, MUC2, MUC3, MUC4, MUC5AC, MUC5B, and MUC7 and glycoprotein antigens KSA, carcinoembryonic antigen, prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), HER-2/neu, and human chorionic gonadotropin-beta on different cancers and normal tissues is difficult to determine from available reports. We have compared the distribution of these antigens by immunohistology on a broad range of malignant and normal tissues. MUC1 expression was most intense in cancers of breast, lung, ovarian, and endometrial origin; MUC2 was most intense in cancers of colon and prostate origin; and MUC5AC was most intense in cancers of breast and gastric origin. MUC4 was intensely expressed in 50% of cancers of colon and pancreas origin, and MUC3, MUC5B, and MUC7 were expressed in a variety of epithelial cancers, but not so intensely. KSA was intensely and uniformly expressed on all epithelial cancers; carcinoembryonic antigen was expressed in most cancers of breast, lung, colon, pancreas, and gastric origin; and PSMA was expressed only in cancers of prostate origin. Human chorionic gonadotropin-beta was expressed on the majority of sarcomas and cancers of breast, lung, and pancreas origin, although intense staining was not seen. Staining on normal tissues was restricted to one or many normal epithelial tissues ranging from MUC3, MUC4, and PSMA, which were expressed only on epithelia of pancreas, stomach, and prostate origin, respectively, to MUC1 and KSA, which were expressed on most normal epithelia. Expression was restricted to the secretory borders of these epithelia while stroma and other normal tissues were completely negative. These results plus the results of the two previous papers (S. Zhang et al, Int. J. Cancer, 73: 42-49, 1997; S. Zhang et al., Int. J. Cancer, 73: 50-56, 1997) in this series provide the basis for selection of multiple cell surface antigens as targets for antibody-mediated attack against these cancers.

Abstract
The effect of Pb2+ on 3H-DL-Glutamate (3H-DL-Glu) binding in the membrane preparations from the hippocampus of rat brain was investigated with a view to explaining the cognitive and learning deficits produced by the heavy metal. The results indicated that Pb2+ (3.1-25.0 mumol.L-1) inhibited 3H-DL-Glu binding in a concentration-dependent manner. Scatchard analysis further revealed that at a concentration of 6.3 mumol.L-1 Pb2+ interfered with binding mainly through significantly decreasing the density of binding sites. This finding provided an important insight into Pb2(+)-induced impairments in learning and memory previously documented in children and in experimental animals chronically exposed to Pb2+.

Abstract
Defining the expression of tumor-associated antigens on primary and metastatic prostate cancer is the crucial first step in selecting appropriate targets for immune attack. In this study, the distribution of the tumor-associated antigens GM2, Tn, sTn, Thompson-Friedenreich antigen (TF), Globo H, Le(y), MUC1, MUC2, MUC3, MUC4, MUC5AC, MUC5B, MUC7, carcinoembryonic antigen, beta chain of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG beta), HER2/neu, PSMA, and KSA on primary and metastatic prostate cancer and 16 types of normal tissues was compared by immunohistochemistry, using a panel of well-characterized monoclonal antibodies. Our results show that GM2, KSA, and MUC2 were strongly expressed on 8 or 9 of 9 metastatic prostate cancer biopsy specimens and, with PSMA, hCG beta, TF, Tn, and sTn, on 8 or more of 11 primary prostate cancer specimens. Tn, MUC1, and PSMA were expressed on 4-6 of 9 metastatic specimens. The remaining antigens were expressed on no more than three of nine metastatic specimens. Normal tissues were also tested with all antibodies. With regard to the eight antigens most widely expressed on prostate cancers, PSMA was not expressed significantly on any of the normal tissues except prostate epithelium. Tn, sTn, hCG beta, and MUC2 were detected on up to 3 of 10 types of normal epithelia. GM2, TF, MUC1, and KSA were more broadly distributed on normal epithelia, all primarily at the secretory borders. STn, KSA, and hCG beta were also detected in the testis, and GM2 was expressed on gray matter of brain. From the 30 antigens that we have screened, this study provides the basis for selecting GM2, TF, Tn, sTn, hCG beta, MUC1, MUC2, KSA, and PSMA as target antigens for specific immunotherapy of prostate cancer.

Abstract
Trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi maintain an intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) of 64 +/- 30 nM. Equilibration of trypomastigotes in an extracellular buffer containing 0.5 mM [Ca2+]o (preloaded cells) increased [Ca2+]i < 20 nM whereas total cell Ca2+ increased by 1.5 to 2.0 pmole/cell. This amount of Ca2+ would be expected to increase [Ca2+]i to > 10 microM suggesting active sequestration of Ca2+. We tested the hypothesis that maintenance of [Ca2+]i involved both the sequestration into intracellular storage sites and extrusion into the extracellular space. Pharmacological probes known to influence [Ca2+]i through well characterized pathways in higher eukaryotic cells were employed. [Ca2+]i responses in the presence or absence of [Ca2+]o were measured to asses the relative contribution of sequestration or extrusion processes in [Ca2+]i homeostasis. In the presence of 0.5 mM [Ca2+]o, the ability of several agents to increase [Ca2+]i was magnified in the order ionomycin >>> nigericin > thapsigargin > monensin > valinomycin. In contrast, preloading markedly enhanced the increase in [Ca2+]i observed only in response to monensin. Manoalide, an inhibitor of phospholipase A2, enhanced the accumulation of [Ca2+]i due to all agents tested, particularly ionomycin and thapsigargin. Our results suggest that sequestration of [Ca2+]i involved storage sites sensitive to monensin and ionomycin whereas extrusion of Ca2+ may involve phospholipase A2 activity. A Na+/Ca2+ exchange mechanism did not appear to contribute to Ca2+ homeostasis.

Abstract
Understanding the distribution of tumor-associated antigens on cancers and normal tissues is essential for selection of targets for cancer immunotherapy. Seven carbohydrate antigens, potential targets for immunotherapy, were studied using a panel of well-characterized MAbs by immunohistochemistry on cryostat-cut tissue sections of 13 types of cancers and 18 normal tissues. GD2 and GD3 were present on most cancers of neuroectodermal origin and GD2 was also present on B cell lymphomas. 9-O-acetyl-GD3 was detected only on melanoma while fucosyl GM1 was detected only on small cell lung cancers (SCLC). Surprisingly, GM2 was strongly expressed on all tested tumors, including cancers of neuroectodermal origin and cancers of epithelial origin. Polysialic acid was primarily expressed on SCLC and neuroblastomas. Globo H was present on most cancers of epithelial origin. These antigens were also identified in normal tissues. Fucosyl GM1 was not expressed significantly on any of the normal tissues analyzed. GD3, GD2, GM2 and polysialic acid were detected in normal brain to varying degrees. GM2 and Globo H were expressed on the luminal surface of epithelia of a variety of organs. The unexpected expression of GM2 on a broad range of cancers and normal epithelial tissues was confirmed by loss after methanol fixation and by immune thin layer chromatography.

Abstract
Understanding the distribution of tumor-associated antigens on cancers and normal tissues is essential for selection of targets for cancer immunotherapy. Seven carbohydrate antigens, potential targets for immunotherapy, were studied using a panel of well-characterized MAbs by immunohistochemistry on cryostat-cut tissue sections of 13 types of cancers and 18 normal tissues. GD2 and GD3 were present on most cancers of neuroectodermal origin and GD2 was also present on B cell lymphomas. 9-O-acetyl-GD3 was detected only on melanoma while fucosyl GM1 was detected only on small cell lung cancers (SCLC). Surprisingly, GM2 was strongly expressed on all tested tumors, including cancers of neuroectodermal origin and cancers of epithelial origin. Polysialic acid was primarily expressed on SCLC and neuroblastomas. Globo H was present on most cancers of epithelial origin. These antigens were also identified in normal tissues. Fucosyl GM1 was not expressed significantly on any of the normal tissues analyzed. GD3, GD2, GM2 and polysialic acid were detected in normal brain to varying degrees. GM2 and Globo H were expressed on the luminal surface of epithelia of a variety of organs. The unexpected expression of GM2 on a broad range of cancers and normal epithelial tissues was confirmed by loss after methanol fixation and by immune thin layer chromatography.

Abstract
Blood group-related antigens have been attractive targets for immunotherapy of cancer since their initial identification as cancer-related antigens. However, available information on the relative expression of most of these antigens on human malignant and normal tissues has been insufficient for selecting optimal antigens and tumors for immune attack. In this study, the distribution of the blood group-related antigens TF, Tn, sTn, Le(a), sialyl Le(a), Le(b), Le(x), sialyl Le(x), polyfucosyl Le(x) and Le(y) on 13 types of cancer and 16 normal tissues was compared. Our results show that sTn is strongly expressed on cancers of breast, colon, stomach, ovary, prostate and uterus; Tn on prostate cancer; TF on cancers of breast, colon, ovary, prostate and uterus; Le(y) on the cancers of colon, lung, pancreas and ovary; Le(a) and Le(x) on gastric cancer; and sialyl Le(a) and sialyl Le(x) on colon cancer. The complete absence of these antigens on cancers of neuroectodermal or mesodermal origin including melanoma, sarcoma, neuroblastoma and B cell lymphoma is as striking as their widespread presence on tumors of epithelial origin. Normal tissues were also tested. Tn and Le(b) were only detected on gastric and ovarian epithelia; sTn on Leydig cells of testis in addition to gastric and ovarian epithelia; Le(x) and sialyl Le(x) on polymorphonuclear leukocytes; and TF, Le(a), sialyl Le(a), Le(x), sialyl Le(x), polyfucosyl Le(x) and Le(y) on epithelia from a variety of tissues.

Abstract
105 patients with late stage radiation skin injury were treated from 1970 to 1986, using drugs combined with surgical intervention according to the clinical features of the injury. Drug therapy consisted of topical application of urea, antibiotics, trypsin and elastase, and systematic use of alpha 2-Macroglobulin. Of 62 patients receiving medication, 55 (88.7%) were completely or basically treated and 7 failed. Of 51 lesions of 43 patients receiving surgical treatment, 47 healed by first intention. In 4 patients, necrosis of partial and/or peripheral skin flaps healed after renewed repair.

Abstract
In this paper, trace element analysis of the hairs from the patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and osteoma was made using particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique in order to obtain some information on the correlation between trace element and these two tumors. The hair samples of 34 NPC patients were each collected before and three months after radiotherapy (60Co) (group 1). The hair specimens from 34 osteoma patients were collected preoperatively and postoperatively. For comparison, 65 hair samples were collected from 40 normal subjects (group 2) and 25 NPC patients, who had received radiotherapy (60Co) five years before without any recrudescence (group 3). The trace element analysis of all specimens was made by PIXE. The results show that there is a significant difference between groups 1 and 2 (P less than 0.01) but no difference is found between groups 2 and 3 for Mn, Cu, Zn, As etc. content in the hairs. Cu and Zn content in the hairs of the osteoma patients is much lower than that of the normal subjects (P less than 0.01) while for K, Ti and Mn content, the former is higher than the latter. The above experimental results are discussed in detail.

Abstract
The existence of disulfide-bonded immunoglobulin (Ig) complexes of IgM-IgA, IgM-IgG, and IgM-IgG, in addition to a monoclonal IgM (kappa) paraprotein, free kappa chains and fragments of IgG (FIgG), were found in the plasma of a multiple gammopathy patient. This is the first report on the interclass disulfide-bonded Ig complexes. Upon exposure to a dissociating buffer containing 6 M urea, 0.1 M Tris-HCl, pH 8.0, a small portion of the IgM-IgA complexes and most of the IgM-IgG as well as the IgM-FIgG complexes dissociated, but the majority of the IgM-IgA and small amounts of other complexes remained intact. These intact complexes were not the result of antigen-antibody reactions and were apparently held together by disulfide bonds which could be broken into monomeric Ig basic units (H-L)2 and smaller components by mild reduction and alkylation.
