Abstract
OBJECTIVES To define the incidence of clinically-detected COVID-19 in people with HIV (PWH) in the US and evaluate how racial and ethnic disparities, comorbidities, and HIV-related factors contribute to risk of COVID-19. DESIGN Observational study within the CFAR Network of Integrated Clinical Systems cohort in 7 cities during 2020. METHODS We calculated cumulative incidence rates of COVID-19 diagnosis among PWH in routine care by key characteristics including race/ethnicity, current and lowest CD4 count, and geographic area. We evaluated risk factors for COVID-19 among PWH using relative risk regression models adjusted with disease risk scores. RESULTS Among 16,056 PWH in care, of whom 44.5% were Black, 12.5% were Hispanic, with a median age of 52 years (IQR 40-59), 18% had a current CD4 count < 350, including 7% < 200; 95.5% were on antiretroviral therapy, and 85.6% were virologically suppressed. Overall in 2020, 649 PWH were diagnosed with COVID-19 for a rate of 4.94 cases per 100 person-years. The cumulative incidence of COVID-19 was 2.4-fold and 1.7-fold higher in Hispanic and Black PWH respectively, than non-Hispanic White PWH. In adjusted analyses, factors associated with COVID-19 included female sex, Hispanic or Black identity, lowest historical CD4 count <350 (proxy for CD4 nadir), current low CD4/CD8 ratio, diabetes, and obesity. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the presence of structural racial inequities above and beyond medical comorbidities increased the risk of COVID-19 among PWHPWH with immune exhaustion as evidenced by lowest historical CD4 or current low CD4:CD8 ratio had greater risk of COVID-19.

Background
Recent blood pressure guidelines recommend intensive blood pressure control in diabetic patients with cardiovascular disease.
Purpose
We sought to investigate combined impact of intensive blood glucose lowering and blood pressure control on clinical outcome in diabetic patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has not been fully investigated yet.
Method
Korean Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry (KAMIR) – National Institute of Health (NIH) database included 12,179 patients (9,046 men; mean age = 63.6±12.6 year-old) who were discharged alive. Among them, 3,430 (28.2%) had a diabetes mellitus (DM). MACCEs were defined as a composition of all cause death, non-fatal MI, repeat revascularizations including repeated percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary bypass grafting, cerebrovascular accident and rehospitalizations at 1 year. This research was supported by a fund by Research of Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Result
We determined cut-off value of discharge systolic blood pressure (SBP) to predict 1-year MACCE in DM and non-DM patients. Discharge SBP of less than 130mmHg was associated with a lower MACCE at 1 year compared to SBP level of 130mmHg or greater (10.8% versus 15.4%; log-rank p=0.001) in DM patients, whereas discharge SBP cut-off level was 140mmHg to discriminate 1-year MACCE in non-DM patients (6.4% versus 8.5%, log-rank p=0.045). In DM patients, there were no significant difference in 1-year MACCEs between patients with HbA1c less than 7% versus 7% or greater (12.0% versus 10.7%; log-rank p=0.325). DM patients were categorized into 4 groups; discharge SBP <130mmHg and HbA1c <7% (Group 1); discharge SBP <130mmHg and HbA1c ≥7% (Group 2); discharge SBP ≥130mmHg and HbA1c <7% (Group 3); discharge SBP ≥130mmHg and HbA1c ≥7% (Group 4). Intensive BP control was associated lower 1-year MACCEs in patients with good glycemic control (Group 1 & 3; 10.7% versus 16.7%; log-rank p=0.009). However, in patients with poor glycemic control, intensive BP control did not improve 1-year MACCEs (Group 2 & 4; 10.6% versus 11.1%; log-rank p=0.761).
Conclusion
Strict BP control is more important than glycemic control to improve short-term clinical outcome in DM patients with AMI. However, in patients with poor glycemic control, strict BP control did not improve clinical outcome.

Background
Current guideline recommends potent antiplatelet agents and transradial intervention. However, it is uncertain whether routine use of IVUS, thrombus aspiration and glycoprotein IIB-IIIA inhibitor is beneficial for improving clinical outcome in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
Purpose
The aim of this study was to investigate optimal procedural strategy to improve clinical outcome.
Methods
A total of 6,046 patients who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for STEMI were analyzed from the Korean Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry (KAMIR) – National Institute of Health (NIH) database. MACCEs were defined as a composition of all cause death, non-fatal MI, repeat revascularizations including repeated percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary bypass grafting, cerebrovascular accident and rehospitalizations. This research was supported by a fund by Research of Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Results
During the primary PCI, potent antiplatelet agents such as prasugrel and ticagrelor were used in 2342 (38.4%). PCI was performed through transradial approach in 1490 (25.2%). Thrombus aspiration and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) examination was done in 2204 (36.1%) and 1079 (18.1%), respectively. Glycoprotein IIB-IIIA inhibitor was administered in 1295 (21.7%). Among them, potent antiplatelet agents, transradial intervention, IVUS, and thrombus aspiration significantly reduced MACCEs at 1 year. Glycoprotein IIB-IIIA inhibitor was not effective to improved clinical outcome. In Cox-proportional hazards model, potent antiplatelet agents (hazard ratio 0.82, 95% confidence interval 0.67–0.99; p=0.045) and transradial intervention (hazard ratio 0.61, 95% confidence interval 0.47–0.78; p<0.001) was an independent predictor of MACCEs after adjusting for confounding variables. Combined use of potent antiplatelet agents and transradial intervention (hazard ratio 0.54; 95% confidence interval 0.37–0.80; p=0.002) substantially reduced MACCEs at 1 year.
Conclusion
Among evidence based procedures during the primary PCI, combined use of potent antiplatelet agents and transradial intervention was optimal procedural strategy to improve clinical outcome.

Abstract
Vinpocetine, a phosphodiesterase (PDE) type-1 inhibitor, increases cAMP and cGMP levels and is currently used for the management of cerebrovascular disorders, such as stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, and cognitive dysfunctions. In this study, we first determined that vinpocetine effectively suppressed adipogenesis and lipid accumulation. However, we questioned which molecular mechanism is involved because the role of PDE in adipogenesis is still controversial. Vinpocetine decreased adipogenic cell signaling, including the phosphorylation of ERK, AKT, JAK2, and STAT3, and adipokine secretion, including IL-6, IL-10, and IFN-α. Interestingly, vinpocetine increased the phosphorylation of HSL, suggesting the induction of the lipolysis pathway. Moreover, vinpocetine increased UCP1 expression via increasing cAMP and PKA phosphorylation. The administration of vinpocetine with a normal-chow diet (NFD) or a high-fat diet (HFD) in mice attenuated body weight gain in mice fed both the NFD and HFD. These effects were larger in the HFD-fed mice, without a difference in food intake. Vinpocetine drastically decreased fat weight and adipocyte cell sizes in gonadal and inguinal white adipose tissues and in the liver in both diet groups. Serum triacylglycerol levels and fasting blood glucose levels were reduced by vinpocetine treatment. This study suggested that vinpocetine prevents adipocyte differentiation through the inhibition of adipogenesis-associated cell signaling in the early stages of adipogenesis. Moreover, upregulating cAMP levels leads to an increase in lipolysis and UCP1 expression and then inhibits lipid accumulation. Therefore, we suggest that vinpocetine could be an effective agent for treating obesity, as well as improving cognition and cardiovascular function in older individuals. A compound extracted from the periwinkle plant can limit the over-production of fat cells and may be a useful agent for treating obesity. Being overweight is the result of changes in the size and number of fat cells, or adipocytes, in the body. Scientists are searching for molecules that can limit the growth and replication of adipocytes, but many anti-obesity agents found to date have unpleasant side-effects. Kyung-Hee Chun at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea and co-workers examined the effects of 502 naturally occuring compounds on adipocyte differentiation in cell culture. One compound called vincamine, which is safely used to treat vascular diseases in the brain, decreased cell signaling pathways involved in adipocyte generation in mice and also lowered fasting blood glucose levels.

Abstract
The ordering of nanoparticles into predetermined configurations is of importance to the design of advanced technologies. Here, we balance the interfacial energy of nanoparticles against the elastic energy of cholesteric liquid crystals to dynamically shape nanoparticle assemblies at a fluid interface. By adjusting the concentration of surfactant that plays the dual role of tuning the degree of nanoparticle hydrophobicity and altering the molecular anchoring of liquid crystals, we pattern nanoparticles at the interface of cholesteric liquid crystal emulsions. In this system, interfacial assembly is tempered by elastic patterns that arise from the geometric frustration of confined cholesterics. Patterns are tunable by varying both surfactant and chiral dopant concentrations. Adjusting the particle hydrophobicity more finely by regulating the surfactant concentration and solution pH further modifies the rigidity of assemblies, giving rise to surprising assembly dynamics dictated by the underlying elasticity of the cholesteric. Because particle assembly occurs at the interface with the desired structures exposed to the surrounding water solution, we demonstrate that particles can be readily cross-linked and manipulated, forming structures that retain their shape under external perturbations. This study serves as a foundation for better understanding inter-nanoparticle interactions at interfaces by tempering their assembly with elasticity and for creating materials with chemical heterogeneity and linear, periodic structures, essential for optical and energy applications.

Abstract
Composite films consisting of wrinkles on top of the elastomeric poly(dimethylsiloxane) film and a thin layer of silica particles embedded at the bottom is prepared as on-demand mechanoresponsive smart windows. By carefully varying the wrinkle geometry, silica particle size, and stretching strain, different initial optical states and a large degree of optical transmittance change in the visible to near infrared range with a relatively small strain (as small as 10%) is achieved. The 10% pre-strain sample has shallow wrinkles with a low amplitude and shows moderate transmittance (60.5%) initially and the highest transmittance of 86.4% at 550 nm when stretched at the pre-strain level. Stretching beyond the pre-strain level leads to a drastic decrease of the transmittance at 550 nm, 39.7% and 70.8% with an additional 10% and 30% strain, respectively. The large drop of optical transmittance is the result of combined effects from the formation of secondary wrinkles and nanovoids generated around the particles. The 20% pre-strain sample has wrinkles with a moderate amplitude, showing 36.9% transmittance in the initial state, and the highest transmittance of 71.5% at 550 nm when stretched to the pre-strain level. Further stretching leads to increased opacity similar to that seen from the 10% pre-strain sample.

Abstract
It will be ideal to deliver equal, optimally efficient "doses" of sunlight to all cells in a photobioreactor system, while simultaneously utilizing the entire solar resource. Backed by the numerical scattering simulation and optimization, here, the design, synthesis, and characterization of the synthetic iridocytes that recapitulated the salient forward-scattering behavior of the Tridacnid clam system are reported, which presents the first geometric solution to allow narrow, precise forward redistribution of flux, utilizing the solar resource at the maximum quantum efficiency possible in living cells. The synthetic iridocytes are composed of silica nanoparticles in microspheres embedded in gelatin, both are low refractive index materials and inexpensive. They show wavelength selectivity, have little loss (the back-scattering intensity is reduced to less than ≈0.01% of the forward-scattered intensity), and narrow forward scattering cone similar to giant clams. Moreover, by comparing experiments and theoretical calculation, it is confirmed that the nonuniformity of the scatter sizes is a "feature not a bug" of the design, allowing for efficient, forward redistribution of solar flux in a micrometer-scaled paradigm. This method is environmentally benign, inexpensive, and scalable to produce optical components that will find uses in efficiency-limited solar conversion technologies, heat sinks, and biofuel production.

Abstract
Unprecedented, reversible, and dynamic control over an assembly of gold nanorods dispersed in liquid crystals (LC) is demonstrated. The LC director field is dynamically tuned at the nanoscale using microscale ring confinement through the interplay of elastic energy at different temperatures, thus fine-tuning its core replacement energy to reversibly sequester nanoscale inclusions at the microscale. This leads to shifts of 100 nm or more in the surface plasmon resonance peak, an order of magnitude greater than any previous work with AuNR composites.

Abstract
Focal conic domains (FCDs) form in smectic-A liquid crystal films with hybrid anchoring conditions with eccentricity and size distribution that depend strongly on interface curvature. Assemblies of FCDs can be exploited in settings ranging from optics to material assembly. Here, using micropost arrays with different shapes and arrangement, we assemble arrays of smectic flower patterns, revealing their internal structure as well as defect size, location, and distribution as a function of interface curvature, by imposing positive, negative, or zero Gaussian curvature at the free surface. We characterize these structures, relating free surface topography, substrate anchoring strength, and FCD distribution. Whereas the largest FCDs are located in the thickest regions of the films, the distribution of sizes is not trivially related to height, due to Apollonian tiling. Finally, we mold FCDs around microposts of complex shape and find that FCD arrangements are perturbed near the posts, but are qualitatively similar far from the posts where the details of the confining walls and associated curvature fields decay. This ability to mold FCD defects into a variety of hierarchical assemblies by manipulating the interface curvature paves the way to create new optical devices, such as compound eyes, via a directed assembly scheme.

Abstract
Two recent genome-wide association studies have identified that the rs2274223 single-nucleotide polymorphism inphospholipase C epsilon 1 and the single-nucleotide polymorphism rs13042395 in C20orf54 are involved in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in Chinese populations. We hypothesized that genetic polymorphisms of phospholipase C epsilon 1 and C20orf54 are also associated with ESCC in a Korean population. The rs2274223 and rs13042395 genotyping was performed using high-resolution melting analysis. The rs2274223 GG genotype was significantly associated with an increased risk of ESCC (odds ratio [OR]=1.86, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.08-3.25) compared with the rs2274223 AA genotype. The rs13042395 G allele showed a significantly decreased risk of ESCC in the younger age group (OR=0.71, 95% CI=0.52-0.97) and no significant association in the older group (OR=1.19, 95% CI=0.87-1.62). We observed that the rs2274223 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of ESCC in this Korean case-control study and that age may modify the association between the rs13042395 polymorphism and the risk of ESCC.

Abstract
We demonstrated the preparation of graphene-embedded 3D inverse opal electrodes for use in DSSCs. The graphene was incorporated locally into the top layers of the inverse opal structures and was embedded into the TiO2 matrix via post-treatment of the TiO2 precursors. DSSCs comprising the bare and 1-5 wt% graphene-incorporated TiO2 inverse opal electrodes were compared. We observed that the local arrangement of graphene sheets effectively enhanced electron transport without significantly reducing light harvesting by the dye molecules. A high efficiency of 7.5% was achieved in DSSCs prepared with the 3 wt% graphene-incorporated TiO2 inverse opal electrodes, constituting a 50% increase over the efficiencies of DSSCs prepared without graphene. The increase in efficiency was mainly attributed to an increase in J(SC), as determined by the photovoltaic parameters and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis.

Abstract
Gellan gum (GG)-based hydrogels are advantageous in tissue engineering not only due to their ability to retain large quantities of water and provide a similar environment to that of natural extracellular matrix (ECM), but also because they can gelify in situ in seconds. Their mechanical properties can be fine-tuned to mimic natural tissues such as the nucleus pulposus (NP). This study produced different formulations of GG hydrogels by mixing varying amounts of methacrylated (GG-MA) and high-acyl gellan gums (HA-GG) for applications as acellular and cellular NP substitutes. The hydrogels were physicochemically characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis. Degradation and swelling abilities were assessed by soaking in a phosphate buffered saline solution for up to 170 h. Results showed that as HA-GG content increased, the modulus of the hydrogels decreased. Moreover, increases in HA-GG content induced greater weight loss in the GG-MA/HA-GG formulation compared to GG-MA hydrogel. Potential cytotoxicity of the hydrogel was assessed by culturing rabbit NP cells up to 7 days. An MTS assay was performed by seeding rabbit NP cells onto the surface of 3D hydrogel disc formulations. Viability of rabbit NP cells encapsulated within the different hydrogel formulations was also evaluated by Calcein-AM and ATP assays. Results showed that tunable GG-MA/HA-GG hydrogels were non-cytotoxic and supported viability of rabbit NP cells.

Abstract
This paper describes the use of Nb₂O₅-coated TiO₂ 3D ordered porous electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells. We employed bilayer inverse opal structures as a backbone of 3D porous structures, and the number of Nb₂O₅ coatings was controlled, determining the concentration of Nb₂O₅ coating. XPS measurements confirmed the formation of Nb₂O₅. The uniformity of the Nb₂O₅ coating was characterized by elemental mapping using SEM and TEM measurements. Photovoltaic measurement on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) that incorporated Nb₂O₅/TiO₂ inverse opal electrodes yielded a maximum efficiency of 7.23% for a 3.3 wt % Nb₂O₅ coating on a TiO₂ IO structure. The Nb₂O₅ significantly increased the short-circuit current density (J(SC)). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to measure the J(SC), revealing an enhanced electron injection upon deposition of the Nb₂O₅ coating.

Abstract
The nonconventional bottom-up growth of TiO2 was first demonstrated in the preparation of hierarchical TiO2 electrodes for use in highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells. The simple immersion of a substrate in a precursor solution enabled the growth of TiO2 particulate films. Here, we have implemented a hierarchical growth strategy in which two stages of controlled growth yielded first macroscale TiO2 particles, followed by mesoscale TiO2 particles. We successfully fabricated electrode films up to 20 μm thick via a growth rate of 0.3 μm/min. The specific area of the electrodes was controlled via the deposition of mesoscale TiO2 particles. The deposited particles displayed a rutile phase with an average size of several tens of nanometers in diameter, as confirmed by XRD and high-resolution TEM imaging. After depositing the second layer of mesoscale TiO2 particles, the photocurrent density increased by a factor of 3. A maximum efficiency of 6.84% was obtained for the hierarchically structured TiO2 electrodes under 1 sun illumination. The hierarchical TiO2 electrodes were compared with macroporous TiO2 electrodes, revealing that the higher photocurrent density could be attributed to a longer electron recombination lifetime and a high specific area. The longer recombination lifetime was supported by the presence of fewer defective TiO2 surfaces, as confirmed by the XPS spectrum.

Abstract
The microbiota of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) constitutes the major part of the total human microbiome and is considered to be an important regulator of human health and host metabolism. Numerous investigations in recent years have focused on the connection between the human microbiota and metabolic diseases such as obesity, type II diabetes and atherosclerosis. Yet, little is known about the impact of probiotic consumption on the GIT microbial population and the potential effect on chronic diseases. In this study, the modulation of the microbial community in the murine small intestine resulting from probiotic feeding was investigated and was found to be associated with an anti-obesity effect. Changes in the microbiota of the mouse faeces and small intestine were monitored using quantitative real-time PCR and by following the mRNA expression levels of various obesity-related biomarkers following probiotic feeding in a mouse model. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Lactobacillus sakei NR28 (a putative probiotic strain isolated from kimchi) were administered at a daily level of approximately 1×10(8) viable bacteria per mouse (C57BL/6J mice) for up to three weeks. Feeding these strains resulted in a significant reduction of epididymal fat mass, as well as obesity-related biomarkers like acetyl-CoA carboxylase, fatty acid synthase, and stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 in the liver. The total number and ratio of the microbial groups, i.e. Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Clostridium cluster I and XIVab, and Lactobacillus spp. were modulated in the small intestine, and the Firmicutes:Bacteroidetes ratio was decreased. In contrast, no noticeable effect of probiotic feeding could be detected on the faecal microbiota, neither quantitatively, nor with regard to the bacterial groups (Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Clostridium cluster I and XIVab, and Lactobacillus spp.) studied.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess whether p53 codon 72 polymorphism is associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer (EC) in South Korea. We conducted a case-control study including 340 patients with EC, and 1700 controls. P53 codon 72 polymorphism was determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The frequencies of p53 codon 72 polymorphisms (Arg/Arg, Arg/Pro, and Pro/Pro) in EC were 39.4%, 45.6%, and 15.0%, respectively; frequencies in the controls were 43.2%, 45.6%, and 11.2%, respectively. Compared with the Arg/Arg genotype, the OR of the Arg/Pro genotype was 1.09 (95% CI = 0.85-1.41) and that of the Pro/Pro genotype was 1.47 (95% CI = 1.02-2.11) for EC overall. When adjusted by age, gender, and smoking status, the OR of the Arg/Pro genotype was 1.24 (95% CI = 0.92-1.67) and that of the Pro/Pro genotype was 1.77 (95% CI = 1.15-2.74) for EC overall. In never-smokers and ever-smokers, the OR of the Arg/Pro genotype was 0.59 (95% CI = 0.37-0.95) and 1.39 (95% CI = 1.00-1.91), respectively, and there was a significant difference in the homogeneity test (P= 0.011). We observed that the p53 codon 72 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of EC in this Korean case-control study, and smoking status modified the association between the p53 codon 72 polymorphism and the risk of EC.

Abstract
SUMMARY We studied femoral geometry in relation to age and ethnicity in a cross-sectional study. Age-associated cortical thinning showed the most pronounced effect, and Koreans studied here had thicker cortices and lower buckling ratios than those reported for other races. Cortical thickness may thus be a major determinant of hip fracture risk. INTRODUCTION The rate of hip fracture varies by age and ethnicity. The geometric properties of the femur influence femoral strength and fragility, but differences in femoral geometry according to age and ethnicity are poorly understood. To explain the high prevalence of hip fractures in the elderly and the relatively low hip fracture rate in Asian populations, we studied age-related changes and ethnic differences in femoral geometry. METHODS We recruited 214 peri- or postmenopausal women aged 46 to 85 years (mean age, 60.6 years). Their proximal femoral bone mineral densities (BMD) were measured by quantitative computed tomography and further analyzed geometric properties. RESULTS We observed large declines in trabecular volumetric bone mineral density associated with aging (33.03% less than the reference value in the oldest group, respectively). Cortical thickness decreased remarkably with age as well, and only 53.94% of the baseline value remained in the oldest group. As a result, the cortical buckling ratio increased geometrically and reached 239.14% of the reference value in the oldest group. In comparisons with other ethnic groups, Korean subjects had thicker cortices than their American, European, and African counterparts. CONCLUSIONS In this cross-sectional study, cortical thickness showed a pronounced age-associated decrease, and the cortical buckling ratio showed a strong age-associated increase. This may in part explain the higher rates of hip fractures in the elderly. When compared with other races, Asians had thicker cortical bone and lower buckling ratios, which may partially explain the lower prevalence of hip fractures in Asians.

Abstract
The centrality dependence of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV is presented. The charged-particle density normalized per participating nucleon pair increases by about a factor of 2 from peripheral (70%-80%) to central (0%-5%) collisions. The centrality dependence is found to be similar to that observed at lower collision energies. The data are compared with models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of charged particle elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[S(NN)] =2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement is performed in the central pseudorapidity region (|η|<0.8) and transverse momentum range 0.2<p t<5.0 GeV/c. The elliptic flow signal v₂, measured using the 4-particle correlation method, averaged over transverse momentum and pseudorapidity is 0.087 ± 0.002(stat) ± 0.003(syst) in the 40%-50% centrality class. The differential elliptic flow v₂ p t reaches a maximum of 0.2 near p t =3 GeV/c. Compared to RHIC Au-Au collisions at sqrt[S(NN)] 200 GeV, the elliptic flow increases by about 30%. Some hydrodynamic model predictions which include viscous corrections are in agreement with the observed increase.

Abstract
The first measurement of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair √ S NN = 2.76 TeV is presented. For an event sample corresponding to the most central 5% of the hadronic cross section, the pseudorapidity density of primary charged particles at midrapidity is 1584 ± 4(stat) ± 76(syst), which corresponds to 8.3 ± 0.4(syst) per participating nucleon pair. This represents an increase of about a factor 1.9 relative to pp collisions at similar collision energies, and about a factor 2.2 to central Au-Au collisions at √ S NN = 2.76 TeV. This measurement provides the first experimental constraint for models of nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies.

Abstract
The ratio of the yields of antiprotons to protons in pp collisions has been measured by the ALICE experiment at sqrt[s]=0.9 and 7 TeV during the initial running periods of the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement covers the transverse momentum interval 0.45<p_{t}<1.05 GeV/c and rapidity |y|<0.5. The ratio is measured to be R_{|y|<0.5}=0.957±0.006(stat)±0.014(syst) at 0.9 TeV and R_{|y|<0.5}=0.991±0.005(stat)±0.014(syst) at 7 TeV and it is independent of both rapidity and transverse momentum. The results are consistent with the conventional model of baryon-number transport and set stringent limits on any additional contributions to baryon-number transfer over very large rapidity intervals in pp collisions.

Abstract
Immunization with hepatitis B (HBV) vaccine is recommended for all HIV-infected individuals without immunity to HBV. This patient population, however, has relatively poor HBV vaccine responses. Factors associated with this impaired HBV vaccine response in HIV-infected individuals may include older age, uncontrolled HIV replication, and low nadir CD4 cell count. Postvaccination testing for HBV surface antibody is recommended and vaccine non-responders should undergo repeat immunization with a full series. The benefit of double dosage, the appropriate strategy for HIV-infected patients with isolated HBV core antibody and the timing and number of vaccinations in persons with advanced immunosuppression on highly active antiretroviral therapy remain controversial areas.

Abstract
The influence of solution chemistry and cell concentration on bacterial transport has been examined using Salmonella pullorum SA1685 and Escherichia coli O157:H7. A column was employed to determine the transport behavior and deposition kinetics with aquifer sand over a range of ionic strengths and cell concentrations. O157:H7 was found to be more adhesive than SA1685, with calculated deposition rate coefficients higher than those of SA1685. Comprehensive cell surface characterization techniques including size, surface charge density, extracellular polymeric substance content, electrophoretic mobility, and hydrophobicity analyses were conducted to explain observed transporttrends. The pathogens' size and hydrophobicity were not significantly different, whereas they varied in acidity, for which O157:H7 had 19 times higher surface charge density than SA1685. Electrophoretic mobilities, in general agreement with titration analysis and column experiments, revealed SA1685 to be more negative than O157:H7. This combination of column and characterization experiments indicates that SA1685 can be transported to a greater extent than O157:H7 in groundwater environments. This study is the first comprehensive work comparing the transport behavior of two important pathogens in aquifer systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cornelia de Lange syndrome is a rare developmental malformation syndrome with a high prevalence of hearing impairment. The purposes of this study were to describe the characteristic temporal bone CT findings in patients with Cornelia de Lange syndrome and to correlate audiometric data with radiologic findings in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten children (6 girls and 4 boys; mean age, 42.0 months) who were clinically diagnosed with Cornelia de Lange syndrome (classic, n = 5; mild form, n = 5) were enrolled. Temporal bone CT was prospectively performed, and 32 aspects of each temporal bone CT were analyzed, 21 by direct measurement and 11 by visual inspection. Twenty age-matched children (n = 20 ears) with normal temporal bone CT scans served as a control group. Audiologic tests were also performed on all patients. RESULTS Characteristic temporal bone CT findings of Cornelia de Lange syndrome were external auditory canal stenosis, soft-tissue opacification of the hypoplastic tympanomastoid cavity, dysmorphic ossicle, hypoplastic cochlea, and dysplastic vestibule, all of which were more prevalent in patients with the classic form of the disease than in those with the mild form. Children who had more severe structural abnormalities on temporal bone CT had worse hearing levels compared with those without structural abnormalities. CONCLUSION Temporal bone CT scans in Cornelia de Lange syndrome could document combined structural abnormalities of the external, middle, and inner ear, which were one of the characteristic clinical manifestations; CT abnormalities were well correlated with the audiometric data.

Abstract
In a previous study, we reported that the distribution of inhibitory input, in contrast to excitatory input, decreased somatofugally along dendrites of cat jaw-closing alpha-motoneurons [J Comp Neurol 414 (1999) 454]. The present study examined the distribution of GABA, glycine, and glutamate immunopositive boutons covering horseradish peroxidase-labeled cat jaw-opening motoneurons. The motoneurons were divided into four compartments: the soma, and primary, intermediate, and distal dendrites. Ninety-seven percent of the total number of studied boutons had immunoreactivity for at least one of the three amino acids. The proportion of boutons immunoreactive for GABA and/or glycine was lower than the proportion of boutons immunoreactive for glutamate. Boutons immunoreactive to glycine alone were more numerous than boutons double-labeled for GABA and glycine, which, in turn, occurred more frequently than boutons immunoreactive to GABA alone. The percentage synaptic covering (proportion of membrane covered by synaptic boutons) of the putatively excitatory (glutamate containing) and putatively inhibitory (GABA and/or glycine containing) boutons decreased somatofugally along the dendrites. Such systematic variations were not seen in the packing density (number of boutons per 100 microm(2)); the packing density showed a distinct drop between the soma and primary dendrites but did not differ significantly among the three dendritic compartments. Overall, the packing density was slightly higher for the putatively excitatory boutons than for the inhibitory ones. When taken together with previous analyses of jaw-closing alpha-motoneurons the present data on jaw-opening alpha-motoneurons indicate that the two types of neuron differ in regard to the nature of synaptic integration in the dendritic tree.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is a biological mediator that is synthesized from L-arginine by the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) family. We investigated the expression of iNOS in bone marrow (BM) mononuclear cells (MNCs) using a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay and the concentration of NO from BM serum by measuring the metabolite NO(2)(-) in 13 patients with aplastic anemia (AA) compared with 10 normal controls who were donors for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). All samples of BM MNCs in patients with AA expressed iNOS mRNA, but iNOS was not expressed in patients who were treated successfully with allogeneic BMT. Normal control samples and samples from leukemia patients who had bone marrow aplasia after chemotherapy did not show significant iNOS expression. When we measured the density of bands for both iNOS and beta(2)-microglobin expressed as the iNOS/beta(2)-microglobin density ratio, there was a significant difference in the ratio between AA and normal controls (0.88+/-0.15 vs 0.26+/-0.05, P<0.001). The BM serum NO(2)(-) concentration in the patients with AA was significantly higher than that of normal controls (88.1+/-32.8 microM vs 48.8+/-8.6 microM, P=0.002). In addition, there was a significant correlation between the NO(2)(-) concentration and the calculated iNOS/beta(2)-microglobin density ratio (r=0.567, P=0.01). These findings suggest that upregulation of iNOS expression for local NO production may contribute in part to the pathogenesis of AA.

Abstract
We investigated whether a genomic demethylation process occurs in pig preimplantation embryos produced by either normal fertilization or somatic cell nuclear transfer. The methylation status of the centromeric satellite and the PRE-1 short interspersed element (SINE) sequences was characterized using bisulfite-sequencing technology. Typical demethylation processes were identified in these repetitive sequences of the cloned donor genome during cleavage, the patterns of which were similar to the ones detected in fertilized counterparts. These findings are different from previous observations with cloned bovine embryos where various repeated regions of the donor genome exhibited aberrant methylation patterns. Our results indicate that species-specific differences exist in modifying the epigenetic status of cloned donor genomes.

Abstract
We investigated the function of Clara cells in vivo during exposure to inhaled crystalline silica by examining pulmonary matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9 mRNA levels in mice. The Clara cells of male FVB/n mice (8-12 weeks old) were ablated by intraperitoneal administration of naphthalene (300 mg/kg) in a corn oil vehicle. The mice were then exposed to crystalline silica (Min-U-Sil-5 silica, 97.1 +/- 9.5 mg/m(2), 6 hr/day, 5 days/week) for up to 2 weeks. Transcriptional levels of mRNA extracted from the lungs were assessed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Gene expression of both MMP-2 and MMP-9 was significantly more marked in the Clara cell-ablated group than in the group with Clara cells, indicating that Clara cells inhibit MMP expression. Our findings suggest that Clara cells inhibit pulmonary inflammation induced by crystalline silica via MMPs in vivo.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species have been proposed to play important roles in atherosclerosis. To investigate the protective role of extracellular superoxide dismutase (EC-SOD), its inhibition of endothelial-cell-mediated LDL oxidation was examined. We constructed the recombinant adenovirus AxCAEC-SOD expressing human EC-SOD by CAG promoter. Infection of endothelial cells with AxCAEC-SOD resulted in EC-SOD protein secretion in a dose-dependent manner and a decrease of endothelial-cell-derived superoxide production. Moreover, it was proven to coexist with heparan sulfate by immunohistochemical staining. Endothelial-cell-mediated LDL oxidation enhanced by ferric-sodium EDTA was inhibited by 47% in TBARS formation by AxCAEC-SOD infection. In agarose gel electrophoresis, AxCAEC-SOD decreased the negative charge of oxidized LDL by 50% and suppressed fragmentation of apolipoprotein B. These results suggested that human EC-SOD localized in the extracellular space and reduced endothelial-cell-mediated LDL oxidation. In subendothelial space, EC-SOD bound on heparan sulfate might suppress LDL oxidation through reduction of superoxide anion.

Abstract
Beta-glucan, one of the major cell wall components of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, has been found to enhance immune functions, especially by activating macrophages. However, a major obstacle to the clinical application of beta-(1-->3)-glucan is its low solubility in aqueous media. In this study, soluble beta-glucan, free of mannoprotein, was prepared, and its effects on TNF-alpha secretion and phagocytosis by macrophages were evaluated. Beta-glucan was first rendered soluble from the yeast cell wall by alkaline extraction (glucan-p1). The extract contained 2.8% of protein which was subsequently removed by successive DEAE-cellulose and ConA chromatography. Beta-glucan thus prepared was completely free of mannoprotein and was soluble at neutral pH (glucan-p3). The effects of beta-glucan on phagocytosis and TNF-alpha release activity were investigated. While glucan-p1 moderately induced TNF-alpha secretion at 200 microg/ml (550 pg of TNF-alpha/5 x 10(5) cells), glucan-p3 markedly stimulated macrophages at 200 microg/ml (2,860 pg of TNF-alpha/5 x 10(5) cells). Furthermore, glucan-p3 stimulated phagocytosis about 20% more than glucan-p1 did. In conclusion, we purified water-soluble beta-glucan which was completely devoid of mannoprotein and effectively stimulated the macrophage function, enabling it to be used as an intravenous injection for sepsis.

Abstract
The antifungal activity and mechanism of a 23-mer peptide, PMAP-23, derived from pig myeloid was investigated. PMAP-23 displayed strong antifungal activity against yeast and mold. To investigate the antifungal mechanism of PMAP-23, fluorescence activated flow cytometry and confocal laser scanning microscopy were performed. Candida albicans treated with PMAP-23 showed higher fluorescence intensity by propidium iodide(PI) staining, which was similar to that of Melittin than untreated cells. Confocal microscopy showed that the peptide was located in the plasma membrane. The action of peptides against fungal cell membranes was examined by treating prepared protoplasts of C. albicans with the peptide and lipid vesicle titration test. The result showed that the peptide prevented the regeneration of fungal cell walls and induced release of the fluorescent dye trapped in the artificial membrane vesicles, indicating that the peptide exerts its antifungal activity by acting on the plasma lipid membrane.

Abstract
We examined 8-hydroxyguanine (8-OH-Gua) formation and 8-OH-Gua repair enzyme activity in pulmonary type-II-like epithelial cells to determine whether oxidative stress induced by asbestos plays a role in its carcinogenic mechanism. A549 cells were incubated with crocidolite asbestos at concentrations of 0, 10, 50 and 100 microg/ml over 27 h. We then evaluated 8-OH-Gua formation, 8-OH-Gua repair enzyme activity and gene expression of 8-oxoguanine-DNA glycosylase 1 (hOGG1) and human MUtT homologue (hMTH1). This was done using a high-performance liquid chromatography system equipped with an electrochemical detector, endonuclease nicking assay and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Crocidolite induced the formation of 8-OH-Gua in DNA at concentrations of 50 and 100 microg/ml. 8-OH-Gua levels increased at 9 h and had declined to near baseline at 27 h, whereas 8-OH-Gua repair enzyme activity peaked at 18 h post-crocidolite exposure. hOGG1 and hMTH1 mRNA levels were also increased by crocidolite exposure. These data suggest that crocidolite asbestos is associated with epithelial cell injury in the process of carcinogenesis through oxidative stress.

Abstract
Soluble mediators such as interleukin-1beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) produced from activated macrophages play an important role in the destruction of pancreatic beta cells in mice infected with a low dose of the D variant of encephalomyocarditis (EMC-D) virus. The tyrosine kinase signaling pathway was shown to be involved in EMC-D virus-induced activation of macrophages. This investigation was initiated to determine whether the Src family of kinases plays a role in the activation of macrophages, subsequently resulting in the destruction of beta cells, in mice infected with a low dose of EMC-D virus. We examined the activation of p59/p56(Hck), p55(Fgr), and p56/p53(Lyn) in macrophages from DBA/2 mice infected with the virus. We found that p59/p56(Hck) showed a marked increase in both autophosphorylation and kinase activity at 48 h after infection, whereas p55(Fgr) and p56/p53(Lyn) did not. The p59/p56(Hck) activity was closely correlated with the tyrosine phosphorylation level of Vav. Treatment of EMC-D virus-infected mice with the Src kinase inhibitor, PP2, resulted in the inhibition of p59/p56(Hck) activity and almost complete inhibition of the production of TNF-alpha and iNOS in macrophages and the subsequent prevention of diabetes in mice. On the basis of these observations, we conclude that the Src kinase, p59/p56(Hck), plays an important role in the activation of macrophages and the subsequent production of TNF-alpha and nitric oxide, leading to the destruction of pancreatic beta cells, which results in the development of diabetes in mice infected with a low dose of EMC-D virus.

Abstract
We examined whether porcine nuclear transfer (NT) embryos carrying somatic cells have a developmental potential and NT embryos carrying transformed fibroblasts express transgenes in the preimplantation stages. In Experiment 1, different activation methods were applied to NT embryos and the development rates were examined. Relative to A23187 only or A23187/6-DMAP, electrical pulse made a significant increase in both cleavage rate (58.1+/-13.9 or 60.7+/-6.3 vs. 74.9+/-7.5%) and development rate of NT embryos to the blastocyst stage (2.2+/-2.8 or 2.2+/-1.5 vs. 11.0+/-4.1%). In Experiment 2, in vitro developmental competence of NT embryos was investigated. The developmental rate to the blastocyst stage of NT embryos (9.9+/- 2.4% for cumulus cells and 9.8+/-1.6% for fibroblast cells) was significantly lower than that (22.9+/-3.5%) of IVF-derived embryos (P<0.01). NT blastocysts derived from either cumulus (28.9+/-11.4, n = 26) or fibroblast cells (30.2+/-9.9, n = 27) showed smaller mean nuclei numbers than IVF-derived blastocysts (38.6+/-10.4, n = 62) (P<0.05). In Experiment 3, nuclear transfer of porcine fibroblasts expressing the GFP (green fluorescent protein) gene resulted in green blastocysts without losing developmental potential. These results suggest that porcine embryos reconstructed by somatic cell nuclear transfer are capable of developing to preimplantation stage. We conclude that somatic cells expressing exogenous genes can be used as nuclei donors in the production of NT-mediated transgenic pig.

Abstract
For the advanced study of the cell and molecular biology of middle ear mucosa, an in vitro cell culture system is required. Although middle ear epithelial cells have been cultured from various species of laboratory animal, there have been no reports concerning a serial subculture system of human middle ear epithelial cells. In this paper, we describe the establishment of a primary culture system of human middle ear epithelial cells using a serum-free conditioned medium and the characterization of these cells by the expression of phenotypic characteristics of epithelial cells and mucin genes. Cultured cells were anchorage-dependent in terms of growth and showed a polygonal cobblestone-like appearance: desmosomes in the cell junction were observed by electron microscopy. In the immunocytochemical study, cytokeratin (epithelial cell marker) was expressed in all cultured cells. but von Willebrand factor (endothelial cell marker) was not. Unexpectedly, vimentin (fibroblast marker) was locally expressed, and a double stain showed the co-expression of both cytokeratin and vimentin in the same cell. The products of reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction from cultured cells yielded distinct bands compatible with the expected sizes of the MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC and MUC5B genes. This culture system will allow us to prepare the cell line and to perform advanced studies of human middle ear mucosal biology.

Abstract
Presbycusis, a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss caused by changes in the inner ear, is related to multiple factors such as noise exposure and otologic disease. In institute-based studies, we tried to determine the incidence of presbycusis in Korean populations living in Seoul, Kyunggi and Kangwon provinces by gender and age groups. The subjects were people who had visited health promotion centers. Pure tone audiometry was done over 20 years on 6,028 subjects. In a community-based study, the subjects were elderly residents of Kanghwa-do area. There were no obvious factors that could cause hearing impairment in the subjects. For the pure tone audiometry, hearing threshold was obtained by using the six-dimension method. The incidence of presbycusis for subjects aged 65 years and older was 37.8% and 8.3% for > or = 27 dB HL criterion and > or = 41 dB HL criterion, respectively. The incidence increased with age. A statistically significant difference in the hearing threshold was found between men and women aged 65 years or older. No differences were found between the community-based study and the institute- based studies. There was a high incidence (about 40%) of presbycusis among Koreans aged 65 years or older (for > or = 27 dB HL criterion). With an aging population, we anticipate that this report could be used to provide a basic data for the study of presbycusis.

Abstract
Mucous hypersecretion is a major complication of otitis media and can prolong the disease course and increase morbidity. Mucin, a major component of mucus, is a macromolecular complex of glycoprotein and makes mucus viscous. Lysozyme is a secretory element of the middle ear mucosa. which has a non-specific and innate antibacterial function. We attempted to identify factors that regulate these secretory products and their morphological phenotype using cultured human middle ear epithelial cells. Cellular differentiation was induced by creating an air liquid interface on culture day 9 in serum-free conditioned media. Omission of retinoic acid (RA) caused decrease in the secretion of mucin and lysozyme, and in the cellular expression of MUC 2, MUC 5AC and MUC 5B mRNA. In contrast, removal of triiodothyronine (T3) caused an increase in the secretion of mucin and the level of MUC5AC mRNA. When hydrocortisone (HC) was removed from the media, the secretion of mucin was decreased with out an apparent change of message level. The expression of MUC 1 mRNA was not changed by the respective deficiency of RA. T3 or HC. The effect of T3 or HC on lysozyme was not significant. This study shows that RA, T3 and HC influence the morphological phenotype and the secretory function of mucin and lysozyme in cultured human middle ear epithelial cells. This culture system can serve as an in vitro model for study of the regulation of various cellular secretions in human middle ear epithelium.
