Multilevel Colonoscopy Histopathology Image Segmentation Using Particle Swarm Optimization Techniques

Histopathology image segmentation is a challenging task in medical image processing. This work aims to segment lesion regions from colonoscopy histopathology images. Initially, the images are preprocessed and then segmented using the multilevel image thresholding technique. Multilevel thresholding is considered an optimization problem. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) and its variants, darwinian particle swarm optimization (DPSO), and fractional order darwinian particle swarm optimization (FODPSO) are used to solve the optimization problem and they generate the threshold values. The threshold values obtained are used to segment the lesion regions from the images of the colonoscopy tissue data set. Segmented images containing the lesion regions are then postprocessed to remove unnecessary regions. Experimental results reveal that the FODPSO algorithm with Otsu's discriminant criterion as the objective function achieves the best accuracy, Dice and Jaccard values of 0.89, 0.68 and 0.52, respectively, for the colonoscopy data set. The FODPSO algorithm also outperforms other optimization methods such as artificial bee colony and the firefly algorithms in terms of the accuracy, Dice and Jaccard values.

Automatic disease prediction from human gut metagenomic data using boosting GraphSAGE

BACKGROUND

The human microbiome plays a critical role in maintaining human health. Due to the recent advances in high-throughput sequencing technologies, the microbiome profiles present in the human body have become publicly available. Hence, many works have been done to analyze human microbiome profiles. These works have identified that different microbiome profiles are present in healthy and sick individuals for different diseases. Recently, several computational methods have utilized the microbiome profiles to automatically diagnose and classify the host phenotype.

RESULTS

In this work, a novel deep learning framework based on boosting GraphSAGE is proposed for automatic prediction of diseases from metagenomic data. The proposed framework has two main components, (a). Metagenomic Disease graph (MD-graph) construction module, (b). Disease prediction Network (DP-Net) module. The graph construction module constructs a graph by considering each metagenomic sample as a node in the graph. The graph captures the relationship between the samples using a proximity measure. The DP-Net consists of a boosting GraphSAGE model which predicts the status of a sample as sick or healthy. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified using real and synthetic datasets corresponding to diseases like inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. The proposed model achieved a highest AUC of 93%, Accuracy of 95%, F1-score of 95%, AUPRC of 95% for the real inflammatory bowel disease dataset and a best AUC of 90%, Accuracy of 91%, F1-score of 87% and AUPRC of 93% for the real colorectal cancer dataset.

CONCLUSION

The proposed framework outperforms other machine learning and deep learning models in terms of classification accuracy, AUC, F1-score and AUPRC for both synthetic and real metagenomic data.

Multilevel Multiobjective Particle Swarm Optimization Guided Superpixel Algorithm for Histopathology Image Detection and Segmentation

Histopathology image analysis is considered as a gold standard for the early diagnosis of serious diseases such as cancer. The advancements in the field of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) have led to the development of several algorithms for accurately segmenting histopathology images. However, the application of swarm intelligence for segmenting histopathology images is less explored. In this study, we introduce a Multilevel Multiobjective Particle Swarm Optimization guided Superpixel algorithm (MMPSO-S) for the effective detection and segmentation of various regions of interest (ROIs) from Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E)-stained histopathology images. Several experiments are conducted on four different datasets such as TNBC, MoNuSeg, MoNuSAC, and LD to ascertain the performance of the proposed algorithm. For the TNBC dataset, the algorithm achieves a Jaccard coefficient of 0.49, a Dice coefficient of 0.65, and an F-measure of 0.65. For the MoNuSeg dataset, the algorithm achieves a Jaccard coefficient of 0.56, a Dice coefficient of 0.72, and an F-measure of 0.72. Finally, for the LD dataset, the algorithm achieves a precision of 0.96, a recall of 0.99, and an F-measure of 0.98. The comparative results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the simple Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, its variants (Darwinian particle swarm optimization (DPSO), fractional order Darwinian particle swarm optimization (FODPSO)), Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm based on Decomposition (MOEA/D), non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm 2 (NSGA2), and other state-of-the-art traditional image processing methods.

Deep Learning-based Sentiment Analysis and Topic Modeling on Tourism During Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the world economy and significantly influenced the tourism industry. Millions of people have shared their emotions, views, facts, and circumstances on numerous social media platforms, which has resulted in a massive flow of information. The high-density social media data has drawn many researchers to extract valuable information and understand the user’s emotions during the pandemic time. The research looks at the data collected from the micro-blogging site Twitter for the tourism sector, emphasizing sub-domains hospitality and healthcare. The sentiment of approximately 20,000 tweets have been calculated using Valence Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) model. Furthermore, topic modeling was used to reveal certain hidden themes and determine the narrative and direction of the topics related to tourism healthcare, and hospitality. Topic modeling also helped us to identify inter-cluster similar terms and analyzing the flow of information from a group of a similar opinion. Finally, a cutting-edge deep learning classification model was used with different epoch sizes of the dataset to anticipate and classify the people’s feelings. The deep learning model has been tested with multiple parameters such as training set accuracy, test set accuracy, validation loss, validation accuracy, etc., and resulted in more than a 90% in training set accuracy tourism hospitality and healthcare reported 80.9 and 78.7% respectively on test set accuracy.
