[Acute infectious lymphocytosis associated to Giardia lamblia and Blastocystis hominis coinfection]

Acute infectious lymphocytosis is characterized by marked peripheral blood lymphocytosis, often associated with a mild, nonspecific febrile illness. We present a 4-year-old girl with acute infectious lymphocytosis associated with Giardia lamblia and Blastocystis hominis coinfection. Analysis of peripheral lymphocyte markers showed overall proliferation of B and T cells with a reduction in the proportion of T cells, especially in the CD4T cell subpopulation. Hematologic values returned to normal after treatment with metronidazole.

[Successful medical treatment of spinal epidural abscess]

Spinal epidural abscess is rare in children. We describe the case of a 5 year old girl with vertebral osteomyelitis and spinal epidural abscess. Diagnosis was made by magnetic resonance imaging and scintigraphic study with HMDP99Tc. Treatment with intravenous cefotaxime (200mg/kg/day) and cloxacillin (200mg/kg/day) for 15 days followed by oral cloxacillin (100mg/kg/day) for a further 15 days produced a satisfactory clinical outcome.
