Fog computing: a platform for big-data marketing analytics

Marketing science embraces a wider variety of data types and measurement tools necessary for strategy, research, and applied decision making. Managing the marketing data generated by internet of things (IoT) sensors and actuators is one of the biggest challenges faced by marketing managers when deploying an IoT system. This short note shows how traditional cloud-based IoT systems are challenged by the large scale, heterogeneity, and high latency witnessed in some cloud ecosystems. It introduces researchers to one recent breakthrough, fog computing, an emerging concept that decentralizes applications, strategies, and data analytics into the network itself using a distributed and federated computing model. It transforms centralized cloud to distributed fog by bringing storage and computation closer to the user end. Fog computing is considered a novel marketplace phenomenon which can support AI and management strategies, especially for the design of "smart marketing".

The bittersweet smell of success: Malicious online responses to others achievements

A prominent recurring theme in social comparison is the concept that individuals are not indifferent to the results that others achieve, and typically seek pleasure while avoiding pain. However, in some cases they behave atypically-counter to this principle. The purpose of this research is to investigate one atypical response, namely gluckschmerz-a negative response to information about others' success (feeling bad at others' fortunes). To advance objectives, a mixed-mode of two studies were conducted using a combination of primary and secondary analyzes, and qualitative and quantitative methods. Findings reveal that this aversive feeling encourages consumers to share online "positive" information with others but using negative malicious word-of-mouth narratives. They provide compelling evidence supporting the theory that some of the positive commercial information conveyed through electronic media triggers negative word-of mouth in the form of online firestorms driven by the discordant atypical sentiment of gluckschmerz.

Time preference, psychographics, and smoking behavior

Following the lead of recent independent economic and consumer behavior theories in health behavior, the author investigates the link between three sets of variables and smoking status and intensity. Data from a nationwide survey show that consumer psychographic dimensions provide more meaningful and valid predictors of smoking intensity than consumer time preference and demographic characteristics. The time preference measures show that smoking decisions also involve economic-like choices. The three sets of predictive variables were able to discriminate smoking status (smokers, nonsmokers, and ex-smokers). Implications for public policy makers are discussed.

Comparison of three inducement techniques to improve compliance in a health survey conducted by telephone

The use of telephone interviews for epidemiologic and public health studies has increased in recent years. Since telephone surveys are susceptible to lower response rates than personal interviews, several attempts have been reported to increase respondents' compliance using various precontact procedures. This investigation evaluates the comparative effectiveness of three techniques to enhance compliance with a relatively long telephone interview on epidemiologic topics. The theoretical and practical applications in the domain of telephone surveys of two techniques, the foot-in-the-door and the low ball, commonly considered nonpressure techniques, are discussed. A newly suggested, combined compliance procedure is also introduced and tested. Results show that compliance was greater for the new method when compared with each of the other two methods. Moreover, each of the three methods outperformed a control condition. The theoretical models developed to devise and explain the new techniques received empirical support in a public health survey employing 335 adult residents of Tel Aviv, Israel, in May 1988.
