Quantifying the consequence of applying conservative assumptions in the assessment of oil spill effects on polar cod (Boreogadus saida) populations

In order to assess the potential impact from oil spills and decide the optimal response actions, prediction of population level effects of key resources is crucial. These assessments are usually based on acute toxicity data combined with precautionary assumptions because chronic data are often lacking. To better understand the consequences of applying precautionary approaches, two approaches for assessing population level effects on the Arctic keystone species polar cod (Boreogadus saida) were compared: a precautionary approach, where all exposed individuals die when exposed above a defined threshold concentration, and a refined (full-dose-response) approach. A matrix model was used to assess the population recovery duration of scenarios with various but constant exposure concentrations, durations and temperatures. The difference between the two approaches was largest for exposures with relatively low concentrations and short durations. Here, the recovery duration for the refined approach was less than eight times that found for the precautionary approach. Quantifying these differences helps to understand the consequences of precautionary assumptions applied to environmental risk assessment used in oil spill response decision making and it can feed into the discussion about the need for more chronic toxicity testing. An elasticity analysis of our model identified embryo and larval survival as crucial processes in the life cycle of polar cod and the impact assessment of oil spills on its population.

An integrated risk-based assessment of the North Sea to guide ecosystem-based management

This study provides an integrated perspective to ecosystem based management (EBM) by considering a diverse array of societal goals, i.e. sustainable food supply, clean energy and a healthy marine ecosystem, and a selection of management measures to achieve them. The primary aim of this exercise is to provide guidance for (more) integrated EBM in the North Sea based on an evaluation of the effectiveness of those management measures in contributing to the conservation of marine biodiversity. A secondary aim is to identify the requirements of the knowledge base to guide such future EBM initiatives. Starting from the societal goals we performed a scoping exercise to identify a "focal social-ecological system" which is a subset of the full social-ecological system but considered adequate to guide EBM towards the achievement of those societal goals. A semi-quantitative risk assessment including all the relevant human activities, their pressures and the impacted ecosystem components was then applied to identify the main threats to the North Sea biodiversity and evaluate the effectiveness of the management measures to mitigate those threats. This exercise revealed the need for such risk-based approaches in providing a more integrated perspective but also the trade-off between being comprehensive but qualitative versus quantitative but limited in terms of the "focal" part of the SES that can be covered. The findings in this paper provide direction to the (further) development of EBM and its knowledge base that should ultimately allow an integrated perspective while maintaining its capacity to deliver the accuracy and detail needed for decision-making.

How including ecological realism impacts the assessment of the environmental effect of oil spills at the population level: The application of matrix models for Arctic Calanus species

For oil spill responses, assessment of the potential environmental exposure and impacts of a spill is crucial. Due to a lack of chronic toxicity data, acute data is used together with precautionary assumptions. The effect on the Arctic keystone (copepod) species Calanus hyperboreus and Calanus glacialis populations is compared using two approaches: a precautionary approach where all exposed individuals die above a defined threshold concentration and a refined (full-dose-response) approach. For this purpose a matrix population model parameterised with data from the literature is used. Population effects of continuous exposures with varying durations were modelled on a range of concentrations. Just above the chronic No Observed Effect Concentration (which is field relevant) the estimated population recovery duration of the precautionary approach was more than 300 times that of the refined approach. With increasing exposure concentration and duration, the effect in the refined approach converges to the maximum effect assumed in the precautionary approach.

High-rate volatile fatty acid (VFA) production by a granular sludge process at low pH

Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are proposed platform molecules for the production of basic chemicals and polymers from organic waste streams. In this study we developed a granular sludge process to produce VFA at high rate, yield and purity while minimizing potential operational costs. A lab-scale anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) was fed with 10 g l(-1) glucose as model substrate. Inclusion of a short (2 min) settling phase before effluent discharge enabled effective granulation and very high volumetric conversion rates of 150-300 gCOD l(-1)  d(-1) were observed during glucose conversion. The product spectrum remained similar at the tested pH range with acetate and butyrate as the main products, and a total VFA yield of 60-70% on chemical oxygen demand (COD) basis. The requirement for base addition for pH regulation could be reduced from 1.1 to 0.6 mol OH(-) (mol glucose)(-1) by lowering the pH from 5.5 to 4.5. Solids concentrations in the effluent were 0.6 ± 0.3 g l(-1) but could be reduced to 0.02 ± 0.01 g l(-1) by introduction of an additional settling period of 5 min. The efficient production of VFA at low pH with a virtually solid-free effluent increases the economic feasibility of waste-based chemicals and polymer production. Biotechnol.

A full scale worm reactor for efficient sludge reduction by predation in a wastewater treatment plant

Sludge predation can be an effective solution to reduce sludge production at a wastewater treatment plant. Oligochaete worms are the natural consumers of biomass in benthic layers in ecosystems. In this study the results of secondary sludge degradation by the aquatic Oligochaete worm Aulophorus furcatus in a 125 m(3) reactor and further sludge conversion in an anaerobic tank are presented. The system was operated over a period of 4 years at WWTP Wolvega, the Netherlands and was fed with secondary sludge from a low loaded activated sludge process. It was possible to maintain a stable and active population of the aquatic worm species A. furcatus during the full period. Under optimal conditions a sludge conversion of 150-200 kg TSS/d or 1.2-1.6 kg TSS/m(3)/d was established in the worm reactor. The worms grew as a biofilm on carrier material in the reactor. The surface specific conversion rate reached 140-180 g TSS/m(2)d and the worm biomass specific conversion rate was 0.5-1 g TSS sludge/g dry weight worms per day. The sludge reduction under optimal conditions in the worm reactor was 30-40%. The degradation by worms was an order of magnitude larger than the endogenous conversion rate of the secondary sludge. Effluent sludge from the worm reactor was stored in an anaerobic tank where methanogenic processes became apparent. It appeared that besides reducing the sludge amount, the worms' activity increased anaerobic digestibility, allowing for future optimisation of the total system by maximising sludge reduction and methane formation. In the whole system it was possible to reduce the amount of sludge by at least 65% on TSS basis. This is a much better total conversion than reported for anaerobic biodegradability of secondary sludge of 20-30% efficiency in terms of TSS reduction.

Relationship of gated SPECT ventricular function parameters to angiographic measurements

OBJECTIVES

Left ventricular volumes and ejection fractions constitute important information in the diagnosis of cardiac disease. This investigation examined the relations of functional parameters computed with a recently published scintigraphic gated tomographic method with those from angiography, analyzing discrepancies arising from differences involved in modeling the left ventricle.

BACKGROUND

While left ventricular ejection fractions obtained from myocardial perfusion gated single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) have demonstrated accurate comparisons with other imaging modalities, validations of volumes have not been examined as extensively, and some recent studies have reported a wide range of angiographic correlation. It is important to know how volumes obtained by a new class of methods compare with those from older, well-established techniques in order to interpret individual patients' results, particularly when scintigraphic images are severely hypoperfused.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Tc-99m sestamibi myocardial perfusion gated SPECT data were processed retrospectively for 58 patients studied by single-plane angiography. Endocardial borders were generated automatically on paired vertical and horizontal long-axis Tc-99m sestamibi gated tomograms for computing ventricular volume using a Simpson's rule summation of elliptical slices. Linear regression and paired t tests were used to compare SPECT with angiographic parameters for all patients and for groups identified on the basis of tomogram visual examination as hypoperfused, ischemic or nonischemic, with the latter category further subgrouped as to fixed defects or normal perfusion. Linear regression analysis demonstrated Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.87 for end-diastolic volumes, 0.91 for end-systolic volumes, and 0.86 for ejection fraction; paired t test analysis showed end-systolic volumes to be nearly identical (p > 0.99) to angiographic values. However, paired t tests also revealed gated SPECT end-diastolic volumes and ejection fractions were significantly lower (p < 10(-4)) than angiography. Correlations and trends were essentially the same for all subgroups except for the small sample (n = 10) of patients with normal perfusion.

CONCLUSIONS

Gated SPECT provides ventricular volumes and ejection fractions that correlate well with angiography, even in hypoperfused and ischemic populations. However, gated SPECT end-diastolic volumes and ejection fractions are significantly lower than angiographic measurements, partly because of inclusion of greater outflow tract amounts in standard angiographic models. Because myocyte concentration decreases rapidly at the ventricular base, it is likely that most gated SPECT methods will produce endocardial borders encompassing less of the outflow tract than do angiographic outlines.
